Uppskalning av fluglarvskompostering : Luftningsbehov och ventilation / Scaling-up of fly larvae composting treatment : Aeration need and ventilation

Johannesdottir, Solveig January 2017 (has links)
Larvae of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) can convert organic waste into biomass. The residue is nutrient-rich and can be used as fertilizer or for biogas production. The aim of this study was to assess the aeration need for designing a ventilation system in a pilot plant for larvae composting in Sweden. First, a cabinet with required ventilation arrangement for performing the experiments was designed. Two experiments were performed, where three stacks each comprised of nine boxes with spacers were used. In the first experiment, a total of 15 kg of municipal food waste and 15 000 larvae were used per box. In the second experiment, a total of 11 kg food waste and 10 000 larvae were used per box. In the first experiment 6.2 kg of water evaporated per treatment box and in the second 4.8 kg, both corresponding to about 50 % of the water present in the substrate added. An average temperature of 31 °C in the inlet air resulted in temperatures of 27-30 °C in the material during the treatment. Based on the results, 8.4 m3/h of air is needed per treatment box to reach 50 % dry matter in the residue of food waste containing 15 % dry matter. The results also indicate that to reach the desired water content in the residue, there might be a need to adjust the initial water content in the food waste and use horizontal airflow in the treatment container. Before deciding on a ventilation design, further studies are necessary to assess how high airflows affect the treatment.

Violence, traumatisme et bifurcation catastrophique : enjeux du lien dans l'enrôlement "volontaire" d'enfants soldats / Violence, trauma and catastrophic bifurcation : relationship issues in « volontary » recruitment of child-soldier

Onguene Ndongo, Theodore 23 November 2015 (has links)
In most current configurations of war front using children, we use to find a part of the community-group bearing itself the transgression. It often appears in these wars, a shameful dimension related to the internal dynamics of the group killing itself. By the fact, in these configurations, we have a collective massacre committed by part of Group, on the basis of common and shared social rules and anthropological codes. The catastrophe theory (Thom, 1961) is an opportunity to explain those phenomena using attractive and repulsive forces in individual an groupal catastrophic bifurcation. It seems, on one hand, the “alien intrusion” (Duez B. 2003) which can be considered as the result of the psychic figuration work out and shaping of the psychic object, loses its main structuring function. On the other hand, the individual lost any opportunity to intimately experience the group as a psychic area on which he can transfer his immediate psychic conflicts and issues. Then, archaic scenes take the rule and invite the individual to find new internal form to deal with for symbolisation process. In these transgressions contexts, where children have to deal with harmful adult bearer of death, the rising of Child Soldier phenomena obeys a dynamic in witch strength (used by lord of war) is the common but not the unique parameter to consider. Child Soldier emerge in the war group which is a meta-defensive organization of the community reacting to the state of war.

Furyous Female Just-Warriors of Post-Apocalypse and Dystopia

Lynch, Shaylynn 12 1900 (has links)
The intention of this thesis is to identify and analyze the precise shift from an exploitative archetype to an empowered representation of women warriors, to identify the arena in which male and female characters are given equal agency in the context of war, and finally explore the key characteristics that make up an empowered female hero. This thesis also addresses the sociocultural nature of the warrior woman archetype as it pertains to the current role of women in the military. The films analyzed in this thesis are all post 9/11 films; a fact that links them culturally to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In recent years, numerous milestones have been reached for women in the armed services, especially for those women in combat positions. For the first time in American history women are being recognized for their active role as soldiers in combat. Therefore, it is valid to consider the correlation between seeing women as military professionals, fighting alongside male soldiers in these films, and the cultural impact of female combat soldiers. This aspect of the thesis also imbues the female just-warrior archetype with a legitimate history, mythology, and current cultural reference; which is essential to the visibility of female combat soldiers of the 21st century.

A Case Study of Civil War Environmental and Medical History Through the Disease Seasoning of the 58th North Carolina Infantry Regiment in East Tennessee

Richard, Ashlie 01 August 2020 (has links)
This thesis is a case study aimed at a key argument in the emerging field of Civil War medical and environmental history. While historians have long acknowledged disease as a major killer during the Civil War, only recently have environmental and medical historians turned their collective attentions to unpacking the complex interconnections of disease, environmental conditions, and culture. By examining the 58th North Carolina Infantry Regiment from the mountains of western North Carolina, this thesis asserts that the combined role of the disease environment and conditions in military camps created the massive outbreaks of disease that characterized the seasoning process of the regiment. Furthermore, the soldiers were practical in their response to conditions, weighing family, nation, and other factors in the face of death. When the threat of disease combined with personal and other factors, many soldiers deserted or took other actions of self-preservation over loyalty to the Confederacy.

Z armády do civilu: profesní identita bývalých vojáků AČR / From the military to civilian life: the vocational identity of former soldiers of the ACR

Soukopová, Aneta January 2021 (has links)
The thesis From the military to civilian life: the vocational identity of former soldiers of the ACR presents a qualitative research focused on the issue of transition from the military to the civilian environment. Based on research interviews with 28 informants from the ranks of former soldiers of the Czech Armed Forces, the author explains how the degree of identification with the army among former soldiers is related to the process of forming a new civilian identity and how the circumstances of their transition shape the formation of professional identities. The thesis also identifies the problems and concerns that departing soldiers face in the process of transitioning from the military to the civilian environment, and where the whole issue of transition between the two environments stems from. Within the research, space is also devoted to the related issue of preparing soldiers for the transition to the civilian environment. Based on the experiences of former soldiers, the process of preparing soldiers for employment in the civilian labour market and the approach of the military to this matter is explained. To make the research more objective, the author also answers the research questions concerning the strategies for supporting soldiers transitioning to the civilian environment and in...

Vers des risques psychosociaux militaires : de la souffrance d'être soldat / Toward military psychosocial risks : the suffering of being a soldier

Retsin, Emilie 27 November 2018 (has links)
In 1996, the universal conscription has been replaced by a new form of military organization: the voluntary enlistment. Then, the professionalization of the military institutions appears, soldiers are not conscripted anymore, but choose to enlist in the French Land Army, considering it as a possible career path. Therefore, the apprehension of the military profession as a common profession may be questioned. Can we really consider the military profession as a profession practiced in the civilian sphere? Can we analyze work conditions and prevent the psychosocial risks in the same way as for the other professions? This last question constitutes the real challenge of our research. In order to answer these questions, we took an interest in the military specificity that we defined and examined during the course of a study about social representations of the military profession. The results are useful to understand that a set of elements characterizing the military profession exists, and these elements, if they are co-present, could characterize only the military profession and thus make it specific compared to the other professions. Then, we focused on the soldiers' reasons to enlist in the French Land Army and their involvement once they are enlisted. Another study has been conducted and allowed us to distinguish different reasons for enlistment depending on the time the soldiers enlisted themselves. Differences in terms of involvement have also been observed. The results we have observed in the two first studies made us conclude that the military profession cannot be apprehended in the same way as for the other professions. To prevent the psychosocial risks that are specific to the military profession, we needed detection tools that were particular to the military institution. In the last part of this research, we created a detection tool for the military psychosocial risks, using the elements highlighted in the previous studies. The tool has been tested and a first diagnostic in a population of 2000 militaries has been realized.

Hammarsten, Hanna January 2019 (has links)
The United Nations foresees a global population increase of 2 billion people by 2050, corresponding to a total population of nearly 10 billion people. In addition, the increase is expected to be disproportionate over the earth and concentrated to parts of the world where food safety is low and production insufficient. The Food and agriculture organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that a production increase of 70% will be required to meet the food needs of the global population. Growing fish as an alternative to conventional fishing is an opportunity to meet the increasing demand for animal protein as the natural fish stocks decrease. Aquaponics is a combined cultivation system of hydroponic cultivation and aquaculture that reduces risks associated with eutrophication, invasive species and diffusion of antibiotics and chemicals. However, the consumption of feed fish is problematic in in both traditional aquaculture and in aquaponic cultivation. Insects are one of many feed alternatives that are often referred to as a climate-smart solution since they are effective to grow from a land use perspective and have a high ability to convert biomass into high-quality protein. One species that has received extra attention in this area is the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens). The purpose of this study has been to investigate whether the implementation of an insect-based fish feed with black soldier fly larvae can reduce the environmental impacts of an aquaponic cultivation farm compared to using conventional fish feed based on ingredients from wild-caught sea fish. This has been done by carrying out a literature study of the conventional fish feed and a life cycle analysis of the influence of larva production within these four environmental impact indicators: total energy use, climate impact (GWP), feed fish consumption (FIFO) and acidification. The results of this study showed that the main energy use for the production of larvae is energy for heating, ventilation and lighting of the production location. In addition, the processing of the larvae (drying) was showed to be an energy intensive process as well. From a climate perspective, it is the composting process carried out by the larvae that causes the largest individual emissions of greenhouse gases. The result also shows that the production of the black soldier fly larvae performs better within the four environmental impact indicators than the conventional fish feed and thus it has the potential as a more sustainable feed component. The case study shows that the analyzed aquaponic farm can reduce its impact in all studied impact categories compared to using conventional feed. However, the study's outcome depends on the current circumstances regarding geographical location of the production, the electricity mix used as well as the availability suitable substrates such as food waste.
