Confined magnetohydrodynamics applied to magnetic fusion plasmas / Magnétohydrodynamique confinée appliquée aux plasmas de fusion magnétiques

Morales Mena, Jorge 01 October 2013 (has links)
A magnetohydrodynamic description is used to study magnetic fusion plasmas in two different configurations: tokamak and reversed field pinch. A Fourier pseudo-spectral method with a volume penalization technique are used to solve the system of equations. The penalization method is used to introduce Dirichlet boundary conditions and it al- lows to easily modify the consider geometry. The simulations of a tokamak configuration in a toroidal geometry show the spontaneous appearance of velocities. These velocities are dominated by their toroidal component if the system is little dissipative. It is also shown that the symmetry breaking of the cross section of the torus causes a toroidal angular momentum to develop. For the Reversed Field Pinch configuration we show the appearance of helical structures. The shape of these structures varies with the value of the transport coefficients and with the pinch ratio parameter of the imposed magnetic field. To complete the study, we compare the results of simulations obtained in toroidal and in periodic cylindrical geometries. The differences in the dynamics of these two cases are highlighted. Finally, simulations are compared to experimental data and a significant better agreement is observed between the simulation and the experiment for the toroidal geometry than for the cylindrical case.

Modeling the variability of EEG/MEG data through statistical machine learning

Zaremba, Wojciech 06 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Brain neural activity generates electrical discharges, which manifest as electrical and magnetic potentials around the scalp. Those potentials can be registered with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) devices. Data acquired by M/EEG is extremely difficult to work with due to the inherent complexity of underlying brain processes and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Machine learning techniques have to be employed in order to reveal the underlying structure of the signal and to understand the brain state. This thesis explores a diverse range of machine learning techniques which model the structure of M/EEG data in order to decode the mental state. It focuses on measuring a subject's variability and on modeling intrasubject variability. We propose to measure subject variability with a spectral clustering setup. Further, we extend this approach to a unified classification framework based on Laplacian regularized support vector machine (SVM). We solve the issue of intrasubject variability by employing a model with latent variables (based on a latent SVM). Latent variables describe transformations that map samples into a comparable state. We focus mainly on intrasubject experiments to model temporal misalignment.

Jacob, Bruno Tadeu Pereira 13 August 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present work is dedicated to perform the mathematical modeling and DNS and LES simulations of a three-dimensional, temporally evolving incompressible plane wake are performed, seeking to evidence differences in stability, transition and onset of both coherent and small scale structures, when the flow is subjected to random perturbations of different amplitudes. The perturbations are generated using the Random-Flow-Generator (RFG) technique, being imposed to the flow as initial conditions. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a prismatic domain, with periodic boundary conditions in all directions, using Fourier pseudospectral method. The invariants of the velocity gradient tensor, Q and R, are analyzed for random perturbations with magnitudes 10−3, 10−4 and 10−5, showing the onset of their characteristic teardrop correlation map. Moreover, maps of the second and third invariants of the rate-of-strain tensor, QS and RS, are shown, in order to evidence the differences in local flow strain and topological characteristics of the dissipation of kinetic energy. Isosurface plots of Q and QW, as well as vorticity contours are shown, allowing visual identification of the coherent structures and confirming patterns predicted by the invariant maps.

Simulação de escoamentos não-periódicos utilizando as metodologias pseudo-espectral e da fronteira imersa acopladas / Simulation of non-periodics flows using the fourier pseudo-spectral and immersed boundary methods

Mariano, Felipe Pamplona 06 March 2007 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Modern engineering increasingly requires the comprehension of phenomena related to combustion, aeroacustics, turbulence transition, among others. For these purposes the Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) requires the used high order methods. One of these methods is the Fourier pseudo-spectral method, that provides an excellent numerical accuracy, and with the use of the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm (FFT), it presents a low computational cost in comparison to anothers high-order methods. Another important issue is the projection method of the pression term, which does not require the pressure computation from the Navier-Stokes equations. The procedure to calculate the pression field is usually the most onerous in classical methodologies. Nevertheless, the pseudo-spectral method can be only applied to periodic boundary flows, thus limiting its use. Aiming to solve this restriction, a new methodology is proposed at the present work, which has the objective of simulating nonperiodic flows using the Fourier pseudo-spectral method. For this purpose the immersed boundary method, that represents the boundary conditions through a force field imposed at Navier-Stokes equations is used. As a test to this new methodology, a classic problem of Computational Fluid Dynamics, The Lid Driven Cavity was simulated. The obtained results are promising and demonstrate the possibility to simulating non-periodic flows making use of the Fourier pseudo-spectral method.

Rodiet, Christophe 17 July 2014 (has links)
This thesis consists of two relatively independent parts, the first part focuses on methods of temperature measurement using Multi-Spectral (passive optical pyrometry) methods, and the second on the Thermal Characterization by integral transforms at high temperature of orthotropic materials. In the multi-spectral part, a method of temperature measurement to take into account a spectral variation of the overall measurement chain (including the emissivity) was introduced. Moreover, a method of determining the optimal wavelengths in the sense of minimizing the standard deviation of temperature, has been developed. Finally, it has also been shown that the optimal wavelengths for mono-spectral and bi-spectral measurements could be determined with similar laws to Wien's displacement law. In the Thermal Characterization part, different methods and models have been developed. The proposed methods perform the estimation of longitudinal and transverse diffusivities on all harmonics simultaneously. Akil, Mohammad 06 October 2017 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to study the stabilization of the system of waves equations with one boundary fractional damping acting on apart of the boundary of the domain and the stabilization of a system of waves equations with locally viscoelastic damping of Kelvin-Voight type. Consistency of Spectral Algorithms for Hypergraphs under Planted Partition Model

Ghoshdastidar, Debarghya January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Hypergraph partitioning lies at the heart of a number of problems in machine learning as well as other engineering disciplines. While partitioning uniform hypergraphs is often required in computer vision problems that involve multi-way similarities, non-uniform hypergraph partitioning has applications in database systems, circuit design etc. As in the case of graphs, it is known that for given objective and balance constraints, the problem of optimally partitioning a hypergraph is NP-hard. Yet, over the last two decades, several efficient heuristics have been studied in the literature and their empirical success is widely appreciated. In contrast to the extensive studies related to graph partitioning, the theoretical guarantees of hypergraph partitioning approaches have not received much attention in the literature. The purpose of this thesis is to establish the statistical error bounds for certain spectral algorithms for partitioning uniform as well as non-uniform hypergraphs. The mathematical framework considered in this thesis is the following. Let V be a set of n vertices, and ψ : V ->{1,…,k} be a (hidden) partition of V into k classes. A random hypergraph (V,E) is generated according to a planted partition model, i.e., subsets of V are independently added to the edge set E with probabilities depending on the class memberships of the participating vertices. Let ψ' be the partition of V obtained from a certain algorithm acting on a random realization of the hypergraph. We provide an upper bound on the number of disagreements between ψ and ψ'. To be precise, we show that under certain conditions, the asymptotic error is o(n) with probability (1-o(1)). In the existing literature, such error rates are only known in the case of graphs (Rohe et al., Ann. Statist., 2011; Lei \& Rinaldo, Ann. Statist., 2015), where the planted model coincides with the popular stochastic block model. Our results are based on matrix concentration inequalities and perturbation bounds, and the derived bounds can be used to comment on the consistency of spectral hypergraph partitioning algorithms. It is quite common in the literature to resort to a spectral approach when the quantity of interest is a matrix, for instance, the adjacency or Laplacian matrix for graph partitioning. This is certainly not true for hypergraph partitioning as the adjacency relations cannot be encoded into a symmetric matrix as in the case of graphs. However, if one restricts the problem to m-uniform hypergraphs for some m ≥ 2, then a symmetric tensor of order m can be used to express the multi-way interactions or adjacencies. Thus, the use of tensor spectral algorithms, based on the spectral theory of symmetric tensors, is a natural choice in this scenario. We observe that a wide variety of uniform hypergraph partitioning methods studied in the literature can be related to any one of two principle approaches: (1) solving a tensor trace maximization problem, or (2) use of the higher order singular value decomposition of tensors. We derive statistical error bounds to show that both these approaches lead to consistent partitioning algorithms. Our results also hold when the hypergraph under consideration allows weighted edges, a situation that is commonly encountered in computer vision applications such as motion segmentation, image registration etc. In spite of the theoretical guarantees, a tensor spectral approach is not preferable in this setting due to the time and space complexity of computing the weighted adjacency tensor. Keeping this practical scenario in mind, we prove that consistency can still be achieved by incorporating certain tensor sampling strategies. In particular, we show that if the edges are sampled according to certain distribution, then consistent partitioning can be achieved with only few sampled edges. Experiments on benchmark problems demonstrate that such sampled tensor spectral algorithms are indeed useful in practice. While vision tasks mostly involve uniform hypergraphs, in database and electronics applications, one often finds non-uniform hypergraphs with edges of varying sizes. These hypergraphs cannot be expressed in terms of adjacency matrices or tensors, and hence, use of a spectral approach is tricky in this context. The partitioning problem gets more challenging due to the fact that, in practice, these hypergraphs are quite sparse, and hence, provide less information about the partition. We consider spectral algorithms for partitioning clique and star expansions of hypergraphs, and study their consistency under a sparse planted partition model. The results of hypergraph partitioning can be further extended to address the well-known hypergraph vertex coloring problem, where the objective is to color the vertices such that no edge is monochromatic. The hardness of this problem is well established. In fact, even when a hypergraph is bipartite or 2-colorable, it is NP-hard to find a proper 2-coloring for it. We propose a spectral coloring algorithm, and show that if the non-monochromatic subsets of vertices are independently added to the edge set with certain probabilities, then with probability (1-o(1)), our algorithm succeeds in coloring bipartite hypergraphs with only two colors. To the best our knowledge, these are the first known results related to consistency of partitioning general hypergraphs.

Fluid flow control by visual servoing / Commande des écoulements fluides par asservissement visuel

Dao, Xuan Quy 30 September 2014 (has links)
The visual servoing control approach is formulated for the flow control of the plane Poiseuille flow. Generally, the flow control can lead the flow from its current state to a desired state. In transition to turbulence, the growth of kinetic energy density can lead the flow to turbulence. Moreover, the drag reduction is a potential application in the engineering applications. Therefore, this thesis aims to minimize the kinetic energy density and the skin friction drag. The governing equations of the plane Poiseuille flow are modeled to a standard form in the automatic control. More precisely, the partial differential equations of the plane Poiseuille flow are transformed to a state space representation by using the spectral method. The streamwise and spanwise directions are discretized based on the Fourier series while the wall-normal direction is discretized based on the Chebyshev polynomials. The state vector involves the wall-normal velocity and vorticity. The control signals depend on the inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions which correspond to blowing/suction boundary control. The number of independent control signals is called the number of the degree of freedom. Moreover, the skin-friction drag and the kinetic energy density are modeled as a function of the state vector. The goal is to minimize both the skin-friction drag and the kinetic energy density by appropriate methods. The partitioned visual servoing control is used to minimize, simultaneously, the skin-friction drag and the kinetic energy density with two degrees of freedom. As a result, the behavior of the skin-friction drag monotonically decreases in time. However, the behavior of the kinetic energy density does not monotonically decrease in time, the similar results from the other methods such as: PID and LQR controls. Therefore, the number of the degree of freedom increases, which leads to the improvement of the kinetic energy density. In addition, when the number of the degree of freedom equals the number of state vector, the kinetic energy density monotonically decreases in time by using the visual servoing control. The dimension of linearized plane Poiseuille flow is large, therefore, we need to reduce the order of controller. We demonstrate that the control law based on a mode reduction can be applied for the full system. Moreover, the kinetic energy density almost will monotonically decreases in time even using two degrees of freedom when the visual servoing control is designed based on the model order reduction.

Paralelizace ultrazvukových simulací s využitím lokální Fourierovy dekompozice / Parallelisation of Ultrasound Simulations Using Local Fourier Decomposition

Dohnal, Matěj January 2015 (has links)
This document introduces a brand new method of the 1D, 2D and 3D decomposition with the use of local Fourier basis, its implementation and comparison with the currently used global 1D domain decomposition. The new method was designed, implemented and tested primarily for future use in the simulation software called The k-Wave toolbox, but it can be applied in many other spectral methods. Compared to the global 1D domain decomposition, the Local Fourier decomposition is up to 3 times faster and more efficient thanks to lower inter-process communication, however it is a little inaccurate. The final part of the thesis discusses the limitations of the new method and also introduces best practices to use 3D Local Fourier decomposition to achieve both more speed and accuracy.
