Effects of Biofeedback on Vocal Behavior on a Child with a Unilateral Vocal Fold LesionLucht, Anna, Boggs, Emily, Garland, Emily, McClain, Brittany, Nanjundeswaran (Guntupalli), Chaya D. 07 April 2016 (has links)
At any given time, 3-9% of the general population experiences a voice problem. The incidence of voice disorders in children can vary anywhere between 6 and 23%, yet, only 2-4% of the population are seen by speech-language pathologists for further assessment and treatment. Voice disorders have negative effects on the social, emotional, and physical functioning of the child. Unfortunately, there is little known about the appropriate management of children with voice disorders. Depending on the nature of the voice disorder, different approaches, including behavioral voice therapy, vocal hygiene management, or medical intervention, are available. However, a concern with behavioral voice therapy is the ability of the child to transfer skills learned in clinic to an outside setting - limiting generalization and adaptation of the new behavioral approach. Biofeedback has been successfully used in adults with voice disorders to help generalize new vocal behaviors. Such data is lacking in the treatment of voice problems in the pediatric population. The current case study aimed to understand the use of biofeedback in an eight-year-old male who was diagnosed with a unilateral vocal fold lesion, who exhibited difficulty maintaining and generalizing his new vocal behaviors. It was hypothesized that the child would benefit from biofeedback and would maintain new vocal behaviors including the use of a safe and efficient voice pattern outside the clinic setting. Longitudinal data on vocal parameters including the pitch, loudness, and vocal fold vibration were obtained over a period of five weeks using an ambulation phonation monitor (APM). The APM uses an accelerometer attached to the sternal notch and measures pitch, loudness, and vocal fold vibration, which helps determine an individual’s daily voice use pattern and thereby determines the appropriate biofeedback setting. The five week period included (a) a week of pretesting, (b) two weeks of biofeedback, (c) a week of post-testing immediately following the week of biofeedback, and (d) a generalization testing two months post-study. During the five-week period, vocal parameters were monitored for an average of 7- 10 hours for 2-3 days each week. On weeks two and three, the child was provided with biofeedback on loudness levels based on his data from the pretesting week. Results indicated change in vocal parameters including loudness and vocal fold vibration patterns during the weeks of biofeedback. However, such generalization was not observed neither during immediate post feedback monitoring nor two months following the study protocol. Such data provide immediate effects from biofeedback on vocal behavior, however, motor learning principles, dose, and frequency of biofeedback will be discussed to further understand the long-term effects of biofeedback in children with voice problems.

Teleducação: criação e verificação de um material educacional na língua inglesa e portuguesa em fonoaudiologia / Teleducation: development and evaluation of an educational material in English and Portuguese languages on speech-language pathology and audiologyFanton, Cássia de Souza Pardo 26 September 2013 (has links)
The update and improvement of new teaching proposals, supported by Interactive Teleducation, have become an eminent necessity these days. Based on these proposals, the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology of the Bauru School of Dentistry (FOB-USP) has been working on the development of educational materials in a more dynamic approach of Health Education. Thereby, this study aimed to develop and evaluate a bilingual educational website in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from content of the CD-ROM Voice: Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Medicine, volume 1, created in 2006. This study was developed in two processes: first, the website was created in both languages and then, it was analyzed. The website maintained the CD-ROM layout and the same dynamic of present the content, although, fitted to online format, so it was necessary to develop, with the support of the Telemedicine Discipline of USP, Virtual Man videos of the phonemes in English and to record the audio of them from a native-American speaker production, thus, it was demanded to organized the content in both languages to ensure that the specificity of each was preserved. The evaluation was carried out applying a questionnaire created for this study which verified the scientific and technical quality of the website. Participated on the evaluation eight Brazilian specialists, being four of Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and four of Portuguese area to evaluate the content in Portuguese and one native-American professionals of Speech-Language Pathology to analyze the content in English, all of them had a 20-day period to access and evaluate the material. The Brazilian researchers evaluated the website as an efficient educational material, since the average of answers for each section was not inferior to 4.2 and the maximum score to be given was 5. Also, 38% of the evaluators considered the website to be updated for three years, a good assessment to online learning objects. Only one American researcher answered the questionnaire, according to this evaluator, the website in English is as an excellent educational material, considering it to be updated for five years. It can be conclude that it was possible to develop the website in Portuguese and in English on Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and the evaluation of the Brazilian and American versions verified that it is efficient technical and scientifically. However, further evaluations are necessary in order to ensure the quality and effectiveness in the American version.

When considering Healthcare, Art has been proposed as a tool to prepare students and professional to implement more effective and sustainable actions in health. The present study had the objectives of investigating and analyzing the perception of Speech-Language Pathology Students regarding to the relationship between healthcare and art. This proposal was conducted in an interdisciplinary and intersectoral way within the Arts Room experience, during the Intensive Speech Therapy Program (ISTP) for correction of speech disorders related to cleft lip and palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction. The following specific objectives were addressed: 1- To describe the activities conducted in the Arts Room at the ISTP and 2- To identify the written records registered by the students while experiencing the Arts Room, that addressed the following aspects (analysers): a) healthcare; b) arts; c) arts as healthcare; d) healthcare as art. The qualitative feature study was based in cartography associated to documental analysis, using as research subject records of Speech-Language Pathology students within the Arts Room. Supported by the principle of art-education, the produced data has being organized considering proposed analyzers for this study and then categorized and confronted with pertinent literature. The findings indicate that the students are prepared within a hegemonic model with emphasis in procedures. There is a lack of spaces focused on the dialogical interaction, to reflect on their care practice, as well as listening and interpretation spaces, at comprehensive health scope. The Arts Room experience, therefore, provided opportunities to the students to think about healthcare and art, contributing for their health perception and practice in a whole, sensitive manner.

Avaliação do website \'Voice assessment: speech-language pathology and audiology & medicine\', volume 1 - do Projeto Homem Virtual - no contexto de ensino e aprendizagem da língua inglesa / Evaluation of the website Voice assessment: speech-language pathology and audiology & medicine, volume 1 Virtual Man Project in the context of English language learning and teachingBelam, Patricia Viana 21 February 2014 (has links)
Following the increasing use of computer technologies in the areas of education and health, based on Distance Education proposals, the website Voice assessment: speech-language pathology and audiology & medicine was developed, based on the Portuguese version of the CD-ROM Voice assessment: speech-language pathology and audiology & medicine, Virtual Man Project, volume 1, developed in 2006, in a partnership between the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). In this sense, this research aimed at evaluating its efficacy as an educational instrument concerning its cognitive and subjective aspects, in the context of English language teaching, more specifically in pronunciation teaching, being the last phase of the multicenter research project responsible for the website development and evaluation. 30 students participated in this research 15 from the Languages Teaching Course and 15 from the Translator Course at University of Sagrado Coração, in the city of Bauru, who were studying the subject English Phonetics and Phonology, whose teacher was the researcher. The group of 30 students was divided into 2 equal groups of 15 students, called Experimental Group which made use of the website as a complementary material for the subject, and the Control Group - which did not use the website. Data collection was carried out by means of two questionnaires, which gathered data related to the cognitive aspects the Pre-website Questionnaire and the Post-website Questionnaire, besides the Motivational Research Form, after the study. Three different means were used to access the website: tablet, smartphone and computer. For the comparison between the groups, considering each question and the number of right answers from each participant, the Fishers Exact Test and the Paired T- Test were used, respectively. For the comparison among the three different website access means, the Analysis of Variance was used followed by the Tukey Test. After the website study, results showed that the Experimental Group had a better performance in all the questions in relation to the Control Group, as well as a greater number of right answers per participant to the questions in the questionnaires. As to the access means, there was no significant statistical difference in the comparison among the three means when the difference between the number of right answers in the pre and post-website questionnaires was considered. In relation to the evaluation concerning the subjective aspects, assessed by the Motivational Research Form, data analysis revealed an Impressive website. Thus, the website showed efficacy as an educational instrument in relation to its evaluation both regarding the cognitive and the subjective aspects, independently of the means used. Nevertheless, further research is suggested aiming at expanding the use and evaluating the efficacy of the website in other contexts of English teaching in order to grant this Distance Education instrument greater quality and efficacy.
