Bouchard, Mélissa 05 1900 (has links)
In this study, the author discusses relations between Catholics and Hindus among Sri Lankan Tamils living in Montreal. By doing this, the author puts forward the prospects of Tamil Catholics through Catholic pilgrimages and Marian devotion. Thus, relations between Catholics and Hindus appear to be codified by social and cultural standards. Also, religious interactions seem to be transformed partly by migration and by the host society. In this context, « syncretism » becomes a secondary concept that is primarily studied in relations with Tamil social standards. Finally, through pilgrimages and Marian devotion, the author argues that Tamil Catholics maintain contradictory relations with Hindus.

Trade unions in Sri Lanka under globalisation : reinventing worker solidarity

Biyanwila, Janaka January 2004 (has links)
This study examines trade union resistance to the post 1977 Export Oriented Industrialisation (EOI) strategies in Sri Lanka, and the possibilities of developing new strategic options. In contrast to perspectives that narrow unions to political economic dimensions, this study emphasises the cultural and the movement dimensions of unions. The purpose of the study is to understand the ways unions can regain their role as civil society actors on the basis of building worker solidarity. The study is divided into two main parts. The first part focuses on the features and tendencies of social movement unionism as advancing new possibilities towards revitalising unions. Under globalisation, unions are faced with an increasingly casualised labour force with more women absorbed as wage workers. The promotion of labour market deregulation and privatisation, endorsed by neo-liberal ideologies of competitive individualism, illustrates the narrowing of unions to the workplace while undermining worker solidarity. The first part of this research describes the impact of :neo-liberal globalisation on trade unions; conceptualisation of and resistance to globalisation; the essence of trade unions; social movement unionism and labour internationalism. According to social movement unionism perspectives, party independent union strategies, based on elements of internal democracy and structured alliances open the possibility of emphasising the movement dimension of unions. The second part explains the context of unions in Sri Lanka, focusing on three unions - the Nurses, Tea Plantation workers, and Free Trade Zone workers. In terms of the structural context, Sri Lankan unions faced a multi-faceted weakening under the post-1977 EOI policies. The assertion of an authoritarian state, promoting interests of capital, enhanced the fragmentation of unions along party differences that were further compounded by divisions along ethnic identity politics. Moreover, the increasing militarisation of the state, which maintains a protracted ethnic war, reinforced coercive state strategies restraining union resistance and shrinking the realm of civil society. In confronting state strategies of labour market deregulation and privatisation, the enduring party subordinated unions are increasingly inadequate. In contrast, the three unions in this study express forms of party-independent union strategies. By analysing their modes of resistance related to the articulation of worker interests, their organisational modes, and their engagement in representative and movement politics the study explores the possibility of developing a social movement unionism orientation in order to regain their role as civil society actors

”…economically and socially. And confidence and decision-making. Everything that we could not do before.” : A Minor Field Study on Fair Trade in India and Sri Lanka / ”…ekonomiskt och socialt. Och självförtroende och beslutsfattande. Allt som vi inte kunde göra förut.” : En MFS om Fair Trade i Indien och Sri Lanka

Bardh, Julia, Carlsson, Emma January 2015 (has links)
Fair Trade is an international movement which aims to strengthen the livelihoods of producers in the South, and to give the opportunity for conscious customers in the North to buy socially and environmentally friendly products. The conventional trade system is criticised, as well as the efficiency of aid to support developing countries. The core idea of Fair Trade is therefore “Trade not Aid”, where marginalised producers are given the chance to improve their living conditions by fair wages, market access and improved working conditions. The aim of the thesis is to investigate the potential of Fair Trade to contribute to sustainable development and empowerment, which therefore also act as the theoretical frameworks for this thesis. Sustainable development is investigated by its division into economic, social and environmental sustainable development. Fair Trade is furthermore investigated through specific key elements connected to these theories, by performing interviews with managers and producers within five separate Fair Trade organisations in India and Sri Lanka.  The main findings within this study reveal how Fair Trade does have the potential to contribute to sustainable development and empowerment to a certain degree. It is specifically prominent regarding social development and empowerment, while economic development occurs mainly on an individual level. The contribution to environmental development is also possible to detect, even though it remains clear how the initiative to do so might not always be fully related to environmental causes.

The hunt for asolution to the conflict of objectives between returns, risk andsustainable investments

Bergman, Elias, Nyemad, Johan January 2017 (has links)
Background: SRI has grown in importance for investors, apart from risk and return. Universities do as moral leaders of society have a responsibility to reach an elevated level of sustainability. Donors, beneficiaries, students, organizations of interest and opinion formers differ in their demands and objectives for asset management in university foundations. This fuel a conflict of objectives that has no immediate solution. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to, from an investing perspective, map and analyse Swedish university foundations’ view upon and management of conflicts of objectives between return, risk management and internal as well as external demands for sustainable and responsible investments. A partial purpose is to give perspective and develop suggestions for guidelines for how a sustainable foundation management can be accomplished in relation to objectives for risk and return given restrictions for what is allowed investments from a sustainable perspective. Completion: We have conducted ten qualitative interviews with foundationand asset managers. The framework used to analyse our data have been built up from evidence based asset management summarized by William F. Sharpe. This has been extended with proven knowledge and legislation. Conclusion: The foundation managers do not fully interpret the conflict of objectives as a large problem and claim they have solved it. They believe sustainability and satisfying returns can be combined. We have although found a lack of risk awareness. We conclude that by having a continuous approach, prioritize the objectives and define sustainability a better solution can be reached.

Emerging femininities in selected Sri Lankan English fiction

Wannisinghe Mudiyanselage, Jayantha 08 May 2019 (has links)
THESIS submitted by Wannisinghe Mudiyanselage Jayantha to Hong Kong Baptist University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and entitled "Emerging Femininities in Selected Sri Lankan English Fiction" May 2019. The study documents the rise of emerging Sri Lankan feminine subjectivities as portrayed in post-independence novels in English by Punyakante Wijenaike, Nihal de Silva, and Chandani Lokuge. It attempts to interpret the rise of socially constructed traits of new womanhood and shifting gender norms responding to significant transformations in post-independence Sri Lanka economy and society during which the nation has rapidly shifted from a traditional rural economy to an industrialized since the 1978 free market reforms embraced with policies of globalization and neoliberalism. The selected novels are historicized by means of specific data indicating that any compensations traditionally afforded to Sri Lankan women through the collusion of colonialism with patriarchy are being challenged by the current globalization of opportunity and risk, even as Sri Lankan women continue to engage in the far older struggles for respect in traditional contexts and spaces (Wijenaike), take up arms in service in the name of nation-building projects (De Silva), or search for greater life opportunities by means of out- migration and eventual return (Lokuge). Challenges to conventional colonial-patriarchal ideology, with attention to specific objects symbolizing alternative (or even "deviant") femininity long preceding modernity, are the central focus of Punyakante Wijenaike's Giraya and Amulet. The use of a Marxist-feminist approach, localized in the setting of the walauwe, allows for the examination of potentials and limits for women's subjectivities as they emerged in the earliest 1970s-era post-independence novels. Nihal de Silva's The Road from Elephant Pass explores the fictionalized portrayal of women soldiers, conscripted to the LTTE in the early 1980s, and the effects of a revolutionary posture upon traditional gender roles. The tension in de Silva's novel between the political liberation project as national/romantic allegory uniting Sinhala and Tamil causes as ultimately endorsing patriarchal claims of Anderson's "imagined communities" thesis in the dramatic context of women's participation in the civil war. Using a "Fourth World" sovereignty frame, the final chapter of the project analyzes the potential rewards and risks of diasporic experience, for women protagonists in Chandani Lokuge's If the Moon Smiled and Turtle Nest. Collectively, the analyses indicate how Sri Lankan novels in English have documented the struggles, potentials, and continuing vulnerabilities around the emergence of new feminine subjectivities for post-independence Sri Lankan women.

Forsman, Hannah, Grönberg, Filippa January 2023 (has links)
An increase in globalization has led to a growing awareness of climate change, ethical values, and sustainable development. The fund industry has become more socially responsible, with fund managers developing new strategies to generate high returns and meet specific customer preferences. Therefore, changing values has contributed to an increased interest in ethical investing, resulting in a significant growth of ethically-oriented equity funds. To fill a knowledge gap, this study aims to describe whether there have been significant differences in risk-adjusted returns between conventional and ethical equity funds in the Swedish fund market. By applying Markowitz's portfolio theory and the efficient market hypothesis to three risk-adjusted performance measures, Sharpe's-, Treynor's-, and Jensen's Performance Measures, the study analyzes the return opportunities for conventional and ethical funds compared to market indices. The study showed no significant difference in risk-adjusted returns between ethical and conventional equity funds. However, both fund groups have, on average, performed worse than the market index. If the goal is to maximize returns and diversification, both ethical and conventional funds should be considered as part of the investment strategy, provided they meet the requirements for a well-diversified and efficient portfolio. The study's results are supported by previous research, and there is no reason to exclusively choose ethical or conventional funds if maximizing returns is the primary goal.

Sustainable investment strategies and the impact of the EU taxonomy : A study on Swedish institutional investors / Hållbara investeringsstrategier och EU-taxonomins påverkan

Eriksson, Marcus, Seth Wenzel, William January 2023 (has links)
This thesis investigates the current sustainable investment strategy of Swedish institutional investors that are not covered by the EU Taxonomy and how the Taxonomy will affect their work with sustainable investments. As a basis, 7 semi-structured interviews have been conducted. The respondent group consists of three institutional asset owners and four Swedish public pension funds. The former group, not having asset management as their core business, mainly use negative and norms-based screening whereas the latter are professional investors and they combine several other SRI strategies. The difference in SRI strategies between the investor groups is mainly explained by the professional investors having a more extensive ESG risk awareness and a greater organizational capacity. Except the screening strategies, the following SRI strategies are commonly used; corporate engagement and shareholder action, sustainability themed investing and ESG integration which is in line with the literature. Though, the institutional investors in this study are employing positive/best-in-class screening to a much less extent than the literature states. The investors agree with the literature and have a general positive view of the implementation of the Taxonomy and that there is a need of a consistent, global reporting standard. However, the investors raise criticism of the EU Taxonomy only including certain sectors, European countries and the exclusive climate focus which decreases the utility and is in line with the current literature. None of the interviewed investors has implemented the EU Taxonomy in their work with sustainable investments yet and do not believe that the EU Taxonomy will affect their investment strategies. This contradicts the current literature where private investors see the EU Taxonomy as a long awaited common framework with standardized KPI:s which will improve comparability on the market. However, a majority of the investors believe that the EU Taxonomy will- or probably will affect their work with sustainable investments in the future as an additional reporting tool where the professional investors show a greater belief than the asset owners. This study shows that Swedish institutional investors will probably use the EU Taxonomy as a reporting framework in the future but the implementation will not change the investor's SRI strategies. Professional investors are more likely to report according to the EU Taxonomy than institutional asset owners. Furthermore, the Taxonomy's level of impact depends on the investor’s Taxonomy knowledge; a more extensive knowledge increases the possibility to start reporting according to the Taxonomy.

Utilization of BIM platform for automatized energy certification scheme / Utilization of BIM platform for automatized energy certification scheme

Doifode, Udayan January 2020 (has links)
Building information modelling (BIM) has been discussed as the most prominent tool for bringing advancement in the construction industry. BIM provides a platform to integrate multiple disciplinary such as structural design, architectural design, MEP details and many more into one model, known as the BIM model. During the course of this work it was noticed that there is a spike in developing new methodologies for efficient energy calculation of buildings, but these methodologies are still based on the manual procedure. Example of such methodology is the upcoming EU parameter known as Smart readiness indicator (SRI). Therefore, an aim has been made by the author to propose automation of such energy calculation methodology aided by BIM technology. For this thesis work, a pre-existing Revit based BIM model was selected and structurally modified as per the requirements. Then, the smart services from the SRI calculation method were assigned to the Revit model. Later with the help of Dynamo (i.e. Revit plugin), a script was created to extract smart services information from the Revit model and forward it into MS-Excel file to obtain final SRI score. It was found that results obtain through manual calculation and method proposed by the author were the same. Hence, it is concluded that the automation of new energy certification scheme SRI is possible.

Från strid till samhälle : En jämförande fallstudie av kvinnliga ex-kombattanter under återintegrering i Sri Lanka & Nepal / Battlefield to Society: : A Comparative Case Study of Female Ex-Combatants during Reintegration in Sri Lanka and Nepal

Delin, Elin January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this case study is to examine and explore the consequences of reintegration among female ex-combatants in Sri Lanka and Nepal. DDR-programs have often been critiqued by scholars for their lack of gender perspective, consequently this research aims to understand the unique challenges and outcomes faced by women with different intersectional identities. This study uses structured, focused comparison, to systematically compare social, economic and political aspects of reintegration based on several comparing factors such as psychological health, stigmatisation, employment opportunities, education, financial support, political participation and representation. Through this methodology, and the creation of the theoretical framework based on critical feminism and the analytical tool intersectionality, the study aims to answer what differences and similarities can be found in the two countries. The findings shows that social identities such as gender, class, caste, ethnicity, age and ideology have a significant impact on female ex-combatants’ access to reintegration. Furthermore, that prior education levels of female ex-combatant have a decisive influence on the possibility of a meaningful reintegration in society.

An analysis of water-related sustainability disclosure of Socially Responsible Investment-indexed JSE-listed companies / Marthinus Jacobus Botha

Botha, Marthinus Jacobus January 2015 (has links)
South Africa is facing a water crisis in terms of the scarcity and the quality of its water. Considering this water-constrained future it is evident that companies in South Africa should pay attention to the pristine management of this scarce resource. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reporting and disclosure requirements of water of Socially Responsible Investment-indexed (SRI) JSE-listed companies. The disclosure requirements of the integrated report, King III, the Global Reporting Initiative and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, provided the theoretical background to develop a water disclosure index. Content analysis was used as the research method to analyse the integrated and sustainability reports of a selected group of SRI indexed JSE-listed companies. The results were analysed in terms of the disclosure on items such as materiality, governance, corporate policies, environmental management systems, risk assessments and key performance indicators. The findings of the study include that most of the companies illustrate commitment towards water stewardship by reporting on water-related aspects. The mining sector rated the highest on disclosure and reporting of water-related aspects by providing the most detailed descriptions by indicating that they clearly understand the context of their operations and the associated risks. In the process of analysing the integrated and sustainability reports with specific reference to the key performance indicators, it was evident that companies lack comparability and consistency in their disclosure. It is recommended that companies improve the relevance, depth and clarity of their disclosure on water. / MCom (Management Accountancy), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015
