Investigation of CdS Nanowires and Planar Films for Enhanced Performance as Window Layers in CdS-CdTe Solar Cell Devices

Chen, Jianhao 01 January 2013 (has links)
Cadmium sulfide (CdS) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) are two leading semiconductor materials used in the fabrication of thin film solar cells of relatively high power conversion efficiency and low manufacturing cost. In this work, CdS/CdTe solar cells with a varying set of processing parameters and device designs were fabricated and characterized for comparative evaluation. Studies were undertaken to elucidate the effects of (i) each step in fabrication and (ii) parameters like thickness, sheet resistance, light absorptivity solution concentration, inert gas pressure etc. Best results were obtained when the thickness of CdS planar film for the window layer was in the range of 150 nm to 200 nm. Also, CdS nanowires were fabricated for use as the window layer in CdS-CdTe solar cells. Their materials characteristics were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Spectral absorption measurements on the planar CdS films and nanowire CdS layers were performed and results compared. It was established that the nanowire CdS design was superior because its absorption of sunlight was far less than that of planar CdS film, which would lead to enhanced performance in the CdS-CdTe solar cell through higher short circuit current density and higher open circuit voltage. Diode behavior of CdS-CdTe devices on planar CdS and nanowire CdS was analyzed and compared. KEYWORDS: Thin Film Solar Cell, Nanowire, UV Absorption, Open-circuit Voltage, Close Space Sublimation

Characterization of epitaxial graphene grown on silicon carbide / Karaktärisering av epitaxiellt grafen växt på kiselkarbid

Jansson, Anton January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis work several manufacturing methods for graphene is discussed followed by an indepth study of graphene grown by a high temperature sublimation method (sublimation of siliconcarbide). The graphene surfaces studied have been grown by Graphensic AB, both graphenegrown on the Si-face and the C-face of the silicon carbide were studied. Six graphene samplesgrown 4H-SiC substrates were examined for homogeneity and surface morphology as well assome surface roughness parameters using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The graphene wasstudied to get a better understanding of the surfaces and the growth mechanisms to improvemanufacturing parameters while also being informative for graphene sample customers. Anadditional graphene sample grown on 6H-SiC epitaxial layer was also studied to get a betterunderstanding of the sublimation mechanism. If graphene could be manufactured in a cheaprepeatable way the applications are endless and a new era of technology could emerge muchlike the silicon era that began several decades ago. In this thesis work the results are presentedas topography images as well as tables and histograms in the results section. The growth onthe Si-face is found to be well ordered when compared to the C-face which shows signs of alargely complex growth. The graphene on the Si-face lies on top of silicon carbide steps like acarpet with a buer layer interface against the silicon carbide. On the C-face this buer layeris not present but the graphene is deformed by buckling which is suspected to originate fromdierences in thermal properties between the graphene and the C-face. The in uence of AFMsettings for characterization of graphene while using intermittent mode have been evaluated andrecommendations are given. Finally a method for evaluating the homogeneity of the graphenelm is proposed but is in need of further verication.

Klaus Kinski : Erster Liebhaber und Lebenskünstler / Klaus Kinski : First Lover and Artist of Life

Wahlberg, Andreas January 2014 (has links)
This study examines the relationship between sexuality and actorial artistic creation in the autobiographic writings of the German actor Klaus Kinski (1926-1991). Departing from Socrates’ appraisal of Eros in the Platonic dialogue Symposion, the text confronts two classic theories on sexuality and art: Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland’s book on macrobiotics and vital power (Lebenskraft), The Art of Prolonging Human Life, and Sigmund Freud’s texts on sublimation. Plato, Hufeland and Freud have in common that they see art and sexuality, representing spiritual and carnal life, as rivals. Hence, artistic production has to rely on a renunciation of physical love, either through abstinence or transformation of sexual energy into spiritual creative power. The case of Klaus Kinski is particularly important, since his literary works seems to resist sublimation of any kind. While devoting himself to libertinage – which he renders in detail – he still succeeds in creating works of art, as an actor and as a writer. The artistic conditions for Kinski the actor, being an active force in control of theatrical objects and means, in contrast to the passive-receptive actor in Rainer Maria Rilke’s The Notebooks on Malte Laurids Brigge, further adds to this particularity. Kinski’s refusal to recognise a rivalry between love and art has its roots in Constantin Stanislavski’s method of acting, in which the task of the actor is to give life to the role by giving it both spiritual and bodily life, having body and mind working together towards the higher aim of theatrical performance. Yet this paradigm of incarnation, as opposed to inspiration, does not apply exclusively to theatrical and performing arts, where the work of art is constituted by the actor’s body. In a text from 1927 about the rhyme, the Austrian writer Karl Kraus proposes an „erotics of language”, in which the ideal Paarung (coupling or mating) implies both the physical act of reproduction, and sonorous combination of two rhyming words, uniting distant spheres or entities. In this sense, Kinski’s ideal coupling can be understood as a joint venture between mind and body, art and sexuality, theatre and life, enabling him to enjoy a frivolous love life without abandoning artistic creation.

[en] DEFENSE AND LIVING CREATIVITY: ONE STUDY ABOUT CREATIVITY IN S. FREUD AND D.W. WINNICOTT THEORIES / [pt] DEFESA E VIVER CRIATIVO: UM ESTUDO SOBRE A CRIATIVIDADE NAS OBRAS DE S. FREUD E D.W. WINNICOTT

VERA CRISTINA C CORREA DE SOUZA 05 July 2006 (has links)
[en] This current master-degree dissertation attempts to make a theoreticall approach as to investigate the creativity and its implications on the psychic human constitution regarding the thoughts of S. Freud and D. W. Winnicott, leading to two prisms: the defensive model of creativity, and creativity as a universal proposition to all but a defensive model. An incursion into the Freudian studies was initially necessary aiming to exam the defense as a creative process; in order to do so, an analysis on the structure and functionality of the psychic apparatus was made. During the process, it was made an analysis focused on the sublimatory defensive modality, present not only in the creative acts, but also in all psychic processes. Finally, the winnicotian studies, which formulates the creativity in terms of living creatively, were taken into consideration as a universal proposition, inherent to all forms of life, that, in perfect health conditions, is genuinabily capable of creating the world by trying it in a magic, active, and ludicrous way.

This work is presented as a point of reflection on the interface between psychoanalysis and religion, based on the dialogue between Sigmund Freud and the psychoanalyst pastor Oskar Pfister. There shall be analyzed the concepts of science and religion referred by both authors in their argumentation in the respective works The future of an illusion and The illusion of a future. This research aims to understand the way those theorists think of culture and its role in the relationship which man establishes with religion. Regarding the concept of illusion, we shall seek to understand its role towards belief, while regarding the concept of sublimation, the cultural processes towards the formation of the religious phenomenon, as well as the transformation of the sexual drive into superior values. As a final contribution to this dialogue, Carlos Dominguez Morano and Antoine Vergote shall reappropriate the Freudian concepts of illusion and sublimation, respectively, pointing to their relevant implications to the relationship between man and the religious experience.

Algumas relações entre arte e psicanálise a partir da teoria crítica / Some relationship between art and psychoanalysis based on critical theory

Nivaldo Alexandre de Freitas 22 June 2006 (has links)
This research points some limits of the interpretation about art realised by Freud, mainly in his essay “Dostoiévski and parricide”, starting from the theoretical reference of Frankfurt’s School. The central point of that critic is the excessive emphasis given to the artist in the elaboration of his work, ignoring other elements that compose it. It tries to promote a reflection about sublimation in Freud, his limitations to describe the art of the 20th century, and Adorno’s attemption in elaborate a new expression concept. It was also considered the author’s analysis of Kafka’s work, what allow a comprehension of several moments that constitute his work as the artist’s function and what goes besides him, analysis that help to think about the limitations of Freud’s interpretation of Dostoiévski. Finally, the reflection about the relationship between art and psychoanalysis allows to understand that last one can bring light to the understanding of the art, but it can also obscure some important aspects of a work, that are left back as overcome by the science progress.

Proceso de Sublimación en artistas plásticos contemporáneos de Lima / Sublimation process in contemporary plastic artists from Lima

Zecevic Cáceres, Luciana 15 September 2021 (has links)
Sublimation is defined as a process of transformation of the instinctual force, not repressed, towards a creative force. In this research, the sublimation process is described in people dedicated to the plastic arts. To do this, using a multiple case study methodology and the conversational systems of González Rey. The personal history and artistic experience of 4 Lima artists between 24 and 32 years old, with superior training in Plastic Arts, was explored to describe how the drive to be sublimated is transformed. To analyze the results obtained, we start from the theoretical notion of Freudian sublimation (Freud, 1940) and then complement it with empirical investigations typical of the artistic field (Ferre Fernandez, 2002). This analysis allows us to affirm that the sublimation process is observable in plastic artists and that it is specific to each artist, since it is framed in their past experiences, emotions and links, which generate a particular way of perceiving their environment and facing reality. through art and transformation. / Tesis

Termochemické vlastnosti lineárních polynitraminů / Thermochemical properties of linear polynitramines

Teplá, Romana January 2011 (has links)
The work is focused on the obtaining thermochemical properties of the linear polynitramines to predict their detonation properties. The basic thermochemical parameters are enthalpies ?f H° (298,g) in the gas and solid phase as well. The values of the enthalpy in the gas phase were obtained at a theoretical level by quantum chemical DFT calculations using both an isodesmic reactions and direct thermochemical G-Gaussian recipes. Conversion to the enthalpy in the solid phase ?f H° (298,s) was carried out using sublimation enthalpies ?s H° (298,g) obtained on the empirical level. The results were mutually compared and correlated with the structure of the linear polynitramines.

Low-Temperature Thermal Control System for an Environmental Chamber

Lindemanis, Aleksis Pauls January 2022 (has links)
In spite of significant reduction of cost associated with launching a spacecraft, launching deep space exploratory missions are yet to be accessible to most universities and researchers. A solution to testing scientific hypotheses and verifying technologies for space is the use of environmental chambers, also know as space simulators, - vacuum chambers, which replicate the space environment. The scope of this thesis project is to develop a thermal control system for a space simulator, which would replicate the environment on Mars, and allow for controlled carbon dioxide ice deposition experiments. The first part of the thesis looks at the climate on Mars, and the process behind the carbon dioxide ice cycle, gives a description of the systems in a space simulator. Then the requirements of a thermal system for the space simulator are stated. The second part of the thesis gives a brief overview of the previous solution attempts at the laboratory in Luleå University of Technology, and the manufacturing technologies required to make them. Based on that, a design justification is given. The thermal control system design section gives an overall design description, with detailed report on the iterative design of the sample holders, and thermal simulations results. Additive manufacturing is analyzed, as means of producing solid designs with the necessary performance targets. The overall cost of the designed thermal control system is calculated, and further work directions are proposed. The appendices include the literature used, the technical drawings for manufacturing and assembly of the thermal system, detailed budget calculations, and additional data from the thermal analysis.
