Effects of coolant flow rate, groundwater table fluctuations and infiltration of rainwater on the efficiency of heat recovery from near surface soil layersMohamed, Mostafa H.A., El Kezza, O., Abdel-Aal, Mohamad, Schellart, A., Tait, Simon J. 19 June 2014 (has links)
No / This paper aims to investigate experimentally the effects of circulating coolant flow rate, groundwater table fluctuations, infiltration of rainwater, on the amount of thermal energy that can be recovered from the near surface soil layers. A comprehensive experimental investigation was carried out on a fully equipped tank filled with sand. A heat collector panel was embedded horizontally at the mid-height of the tank. Measurements of the temperature at various points on the heat collector panel, adjacent soil, inlet and outlet were continuously monitored and recorded. After reaching a steady state, it was observed that increasing water saturation in the adjacent soil leads to a substantial increase on the amount of heat recovered. A model was proposed for the estimation of temperature along the heat collector panel based on steady state conditions. It accounted for thermal resistance between pipes and the variability of water saturation in the adjacent soils. This model showed good agreement with the data. Whilst increasing the flow rate of the circulating fluid within the panel did not cause noticeable improvement on the amount of heat energy that can be harnessed within the laminar flow regime commonly found in ground source heat panels. Infiltration of rainwater would cause a temporary enhancement on the amount of extracted heat. Measurement of the sand thermal conductivity during a cycle of drying and wetting indicates that the thermal conductivity is primarily dependent upon the degree of water saturation and secondary on the flow path.

The Distributed Spacecraft Attitude Control System Simulator: From Design Concept to Decentralized ControlSchwartz, Jana Lyn 21 July 2004 (has links)
A spacecraft formation possesses several benefits over a single-satellite mission. However, launching a fleet of satellites is a high-cost, high-risk venture. One way to mitigate much of this risk is to demonstrate hardware and algorithm performance in groundbased testbeds. It is typically difficult to experimentally replicate satellite dynamics in an Earth-bound laboratory because of the influences of gravity and friction. An air bearing provides a very low-torque environment for experimentation, thereby recapturing the freedom of the space environment as effectively as possible. Depending upon con- figuration, air-bearing systems provide some combination of translational and rotational freedom; the three degrees of rotational freedom provided by a spherical air bearing are ideal for investigation of spacecraft attitude dynamics and control problems.
An interest in experimental demonstration of formation flying led directly to the development of the Distributed Spacecraft Attitude Control System Simulator (DSACSS). The DSACSS is a unique facility, as it uses two air-bearing platforms working in concert. Thus DSACSS provides a pair of "spacecraft" three degrees of attitude freedom each. Through use of the DSACSS we are able to replicate the relative attitude dynamics between nodes of a formation such as might be required for co-observation of a terrestrial target.
Many dissertations present a new mathematical technique or prove a new theory. This dissertation presents the design and development of a new experimental system. Although the DSACSS is not yet fully operational, a great deal of work has gone into its development thus far. This work has ranged from configuration design to nonlinear analysis to structural and electrical manufacturing. In this dissertation we focus on the development of the attitude determination subsystem. This work includes development of the equations of motion and analysis of the sensor suite dynamics. We develop nonlinear filtering techniques for data fusion and attitude estimation, and extend this problem to include estimation of the mass properties of the system. We include recommendations for system modifications and improvements. / Ph. D.

Development of a Damage Indicator Based on Detection of High-Frequency Transients Monitored in Bridge Piers During Earthquake Ground ShakingZhelyazkov, Aleksandar 05 August 2020 (has links)
Real-time structural health monitoring is a well established tool for post-earthquake damage estimation. A key component in the monitoring campaign is the approach used for processing the data from the structural health monitoring system. There is a large body of literature on signal processing approaches aimed at identifying ground-motion induced damage in civil engineering structures. This dissertation expands on a specific subgroup of processing approaches dealing with the identification of damage induced high-frequency transients in the monitoring data. The underlying intuition guiding the current research can be formulated in the following hypothesis - the time difference between the occurrence of a high-frequency transient and the closest deformation extremum forward in time is proportional to the degree of damage. A mathematical deduction is provided in support of the above hypothesis followed by a set of shaking table tests. For the purposes of this research two shaking table tests of reinforced concrete bridge piers were performed. Data from a shaking table test performed by another research group was also analyzed. The cases in which the proposed procedure could find a practical application are examined along with the present limitations.

Development of a pest management system for table grapes in the Hex River ValleyDe Villiers, Marelize 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Agric) (Conservation Ecology and Entomology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / A study was performed to develop a generic pest monitoring system for sampling the
main table grape pests in vineyards in the Hex River Valley, Western Cape Province
of South Africa. The presence of phytophagous and predatory mites on cover crop
plants was also investigated as this may contribute to biological control of the
phytophagous mites in vines. Life table studies for Epichoristodes acerbella
(Walker), an important phytosanitary pest, were conducted to determine whether or
not this pest was sensitive to high temperatures. Information gained from the latter
can also be used for breeding purposes in the possible future development of a sterile
insect technique (SIT) programme to control this pest.
The sampling system consisted of inspecting 20 plots of five vines per plot per one to
two hectares. The top fork of each of the five vines per plot was examined for
Planococcus ficus (Signoret) to a distance of within 30 cm of the stem, as well as the
distal 15 cm of one cane per vine for the presence of P. ficus and damage caused by
Phlyctinus callosus Boh. One bunch per vine was examined for insect damage or
presence, and one leaf per vine for the presence of leaf infesting arthropods, such as
Tetranychus urticae Koch, P. ficus and Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande).
Corrugated cardboard bands, tied around the stem of one vine per plot, were used to
monitor activity of P. callosus. Blue sticky traps, at a density of four to five traps per
one to two hectares, were used to monitor activity of F. occidentalis. Pheromone
traps, at a density of one trap per one to two hectares, were used to monitor activity of
P. ficus, E. acerbella and Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner). All the above-mentioned
inspections were done at two-weekly intervals, except traps for E. acerbella and H.
armigera, which were inspected weekly. In each of the rows in which the sample
plots were situated, one leaf of each of the cover crop plant species was examined for
the presence of phytophagous mites and their predators. The abundance and
distribution of cover crop plants were determined using a co-ordinate sampling
system. Cover crop sampling was done at monthly intervals.
The current threshold for P. ficus is 2% stem infestation, which is reached when more
than 65 males per pheromone trap are recorded. Counting mealybugs on the sticky
pads in the pheromone traps is time consuming. However, the number of grid blocks
on the sticky pad with males present can be counted. When P. ficus males are found in 27 blocks on the sticky pad, stem inspections should commence. Due to the spatial
association between P. ficus bunch and stem infestation, stem infestation could give
an indication of where bunch infestation could be expected.
The use of blue sticky traps for predicting halo spot damage, caused by F.
occidentalis, is not recommended. The presence of thrips on the vine leaves could not
give an indication of where to expect bunch damage, since thrips on the leaves and
halo spot damage were not spatially associated. A suitable sampling method for F.
occidentalis still needs to be developed. The monitoring system described here can
only provide information on the infestation status of the vineyard.
For E. acerbella, H. armigera and P. callosus, the traps and cardboard bands could be
used to identify vineyards where these pests are present and therefore, where
phytosanitary problems may arise. The presence of P. callosus under the bands was
spatially associated with P. callosus damage and could be used as an indicator of the
latter. The presence of drosophilid flies in the bunches could not be used as an
indicator of the presence of E. acerbella in the bunches. If 5% bunch damage is used
as an economic threshold for E. acerbella and P. callosus, there will be a good chance
of not under spraying if control measures are applied at 1% bunch damage.
Epichoristodes acerbella favoured more moderate constant temperatures, with
constant temperatures of 28°C and above being unfavourable for development.
The economic threshold for Tetranychus urticae Koch is six mites per leaf, or if
presence-absence sampling is used, 11 to 29% leaf infestation. Three important
predatory mites, that kept T. urticae under control, were found in the Hex River
Valley, namely Euseius addoensis (Van der Merwe & Ryke), Neoseiulus californicus
(McGregor) and an undescribed phytoseiid in the genus Typhlodromus. Various
cover crop plants served as hosts for T. urticae and predatory mites. The presence of
these plants created suitable conditions for the survival of these mites and may have
influenced their presence on the vine leaves.
In the case of phytosanitary pests, both field and pack shed inspections can be used to
conclude with a 99% degree of certainty that infestation levels in the pack shed will
be 10% or less, since similar results for both methods were obtained. However, more
than 20 plots will have to be inspected.

Multiple studies have reported an increased prevalence of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis in certain groups of athletes, including gymnasts, where it can reach as high as 40 to 50%. Numerous studies have shown that sagittal sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation is different in spondylolisthesis. Sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation in gymnasts and their relationship with spondylolisthesis have never been analyzed.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of spondylolisthesis in a cohort of gymnasts, as well as the associated demographic characteristics and sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation. In order to achieve our goal, an evaluation of different demographic characteristics and radiological parameters was performed on a cohort of 92 young gymnasts.
A 6.5 % prevalence of spondylolisthesis was found. The weekly training schedule was the only statistically significant different demographic characteristic between the two groups, with and without spondylolisthesis. Our results have also shown that sagittal sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation, in terms of pelvic incidence (p = 0.02) and sacral table angle (p = 0.036), is different between gymnasts with and without spondylolisthesis. In conclusion, our observations support the importance of sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation in spondylolisthesis.

La circulation dans les Alpes à l'époque romaine : l'exemple des Alpes Cottiennes / Traffic over the Alps in Roam times : the case of Cottian AlpsArtru, Francois 28 September 2012 (has links)
The study addresses the Mont-Genèvre road and the Cottian Alps district as playing a major rôle in the transalpine traffic during the Roman period. A general chapter upon alpine circulation in the Antiquity reviews the following subjects: recent paleoclimatic data, control of an itinerary in the genesis of preroman tribes’ settlement, actual knowledge of Alps by Romans, and practical traveling conditions through mountains.Relationships between politico-military events, territorial limits and road network are analysed along five centuries of Roman presence. The idea of a vast preroman kingdom ruled by Cottius is not shared. The transition from independence to the status of roman prefecture is viewed as a preliminary decision of August and not as a final event of the Alps conquest. Ammianus alleged hostility of Cottius to Rome, but his testimony has to be rejected. Pline’s allusion to the twelve cottian cities which were not hostile is explained by supposing an early transitory state of the prefecture. It is explained how the development of the road network allowed promotion of some cities to municipal status, favoured romanisation and boosted the economy of high valleys. An intensification of pastoralism through the practice of transhumance is suggested. Related aspects of the alpine traffic, as cursus publicus, Quadragesima Galliarum and religious beliefs of travellers are examined. Evidences for the existence of a ‘Mont-Genèvre roads system’, constructed since the time of the prefecture, are derived from archaeological registries and local exploration. Concerning the road of the Durance valley, within cottian frontiers, it appears to follow a quite different course from the one proposed until now. Arguments are gathered favouring the existence of a roman road running across the Petit Mont-Cenis and leading to the Rhenan limes. The road which very likely runs over the col de Larche (or de la Madeleine) and through the Ubaye valley appears to join easily the Durance valley contrary to some previous opinions. Two other routes of the Mont-Genèvre system are studied in detail. One crosses the col du Lautaret and its two remaining sections are carefully examined, namely the Porte Romaine de Bons and the rock-cutted segment near Bourg d’Oisans. The second road, between Luc-en-Diois and the Mont-Genèvre, appears only on the Tabula Peutingeriana. Graphical examination of the drawing and local investigation does not allow a definitive conclusion upon the reality of this route.

Supervision des réseaux pair à pair structurés appliquée à la sécurité des contenus / Monitoring of structured P2P networks applied to the security of contentsCholez, Thibault 23 June 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement new monitoring solutions which are able to deal with the security issues affecting data stored in large structured P2P networks (DHT). There are two major types of issues. First, P2P networks are used to spread illegal contents whose activity is difficult to monitor accurately. Second, the indexation of regular contents can be corrupted (Sybil attack). We first designed a new approach to monitor contents based on the insertion of distributed probes in the network to take control of the indexation mechanism. The probes can attract all the related requests for a given content and assess the peers intent to access it by generating very attractive honeypots. We describe the weaknesses of the network allowing our solution to be effective despite recent protection mechanisms. We then present the services offered by our monitoring architecture and we evaluate its efficiency on KAD. We also present a real deployment whose purpose is to study pedophile contents on this network. Then, we focus on data integrity in distributed hash tables. We performed large scale monitoring campaigns on the KAD network. Our observations show that it suffers from a very harmful pollution of its indexation mechanism affecting 2/3 of the shared files and from a large number of localized attacks targeting contents. To mitigate these threats, we propose a new efficient way to detect attacks by analysing the distribution of the peers' ID found around an entry after a DHT lookup and a counter-measure which can protect the peers at a negligible cost. Finally, we evaluate our solution in real P2P networks.

Coffee table-böcker eller praktverk – begrepp, attityder och arbetssätt : Djupintervjuer med grafiska formgivare och förlagsanställda / Coffee table books or Luxury works – terms, attitudes and the work process : In-depth interviews with graphic designers and employees at publishing housesSäll, Esmeralda, Sörbom, Anna January 2014 (has links)
Semi-structured, in-depth interviews with eight Swedish graphic designers and employees at publishing houses were carried out with the purpose of mapping the strategic and creative work process of producing Coffee table books and Luxury works (Swedish praktverk), as well as respondents attitudes towards these processes. The three main steps identified in the process are presented and compared to results in previous studies. The production of these books was found to be complex due to the number of people involved, the time required, the costs involved and the relatively small profit margins. All of which increase the exposure to certain risks. The re-spondents however found the work to be exciting, enjoyable and fulfilling. In addition to this the study discovered the inconsistency between the definition of “Coffee table book” and “Luxury work” and what was found to be the com-monly accepted understanding of these. This applied particularly to the term “Coffee table book,” where some respondents associated the term to a lower standard of literature. The terms and definitions of these books will be dis-cussed as well as the market condition described by the respondents.
