The Effect of Residency Requirements on Police as Capable GuardiansPritchard, David 16 April 2010 (has links)
The debate over police residency requirements dates to the advent of the modern police force in the early 19th Century. Many reasons have been put forth regarding these requirements, from effectiveness to availability to economic impact. On the other hand, opponents have argued that quality of life, employee retention, and applicant pool should be considered in the decision to have residency mandates. This study seeks to determine the effectiveness of resident police officers within the context of the Routine Activities Theory. In particular, it considered whether police officers are more capable guardians when they live in the jurisdictions where they work, specifically when using a marked take home police vehicle as a place keeper. Data was collected regarding police residency, Group A crime, Group B crime, and social disorganization in 25 apartment complexes in Chesterfield County, VA, during a six month period. It was found that police residency had a statistically significant and moderately strong negative effect on the rate of Group A crime and signs of social disorganization, as measured by police calls for service. Police residency showed a weak negative effect on Group B crime, but it was not statistically significant.

L'incidence du LBO sur la notion de société / The impact of the LBO on companyBertrel, Marina 08 June 2012 (has links)
The dissertation means to focus on confronting a classic of corporate law, the very notion ofcompany, with the requirements often bordering on « financial vampirism » related to thisarchetype of financial capitalism, the « Leveraged Buy Out ». A LBO embodies, from thepoint of view of corporate law, the setting-up of a grouping made up of two companies, one :the take-over holding company, the other : the one that is being bought, the « target ».However important the latter may be, it is at the upper level, the take-over holding company, that the specific features of the financial set-up and their impact on the notion of company arebest given a definite form. The impact is measured according to the content (Part I) and theform (Part II) of the company which acts as the cornerstone in the financial set-up of a LBO.PART I : THE IMPACT OF THE LBO ON THE CONTENT OF THE COMPANYThe content of the company studied here, has been grasped as what constitutes its essential, defining consequently its identity. The demonstration has been conducted from thefundamental aspects of the company : what it does, i-e its operations (Heading I) and itsnature, i.e its qualification (Heading II). The two aspects well evince, in a LBO, theteleology of the take-over holding company, that functional dimension of the company, sobrilliantly expounded by the « Rennes School ». Indeed the take-over holding company has adouble purpose : organizing both a share-holding operation (a take-over with leverage) and acontractual operation (an investment contract conceived as a loan contract), the latter beingclearly incidental to the former. This first part lead us to propose renewing the study of somemajors questions related to corporate law such as the legal nature of the control acquisitionand holding of a trading company (the « target ») as well as that of the qualification putforwardas doctrine of « investment contract » of a company (such as a take-over holdingcompany) with a capital open to professionals of capital investment.PART II. THE IMPACT OF THE LBO ON COMPANY STRUCTUREThe word form should here be understood in tis double meaning. It is first used in itstaxinomic sense, referring to the different company structures that can be applied to play therole of legal outfit for the take-over holding company. It also aims, subsequently and closelylinked, at the outcome of the corporate law specialist’s task, once the company’s structure has6been chosen, endeavouring to use all its inherent capacities for growth in order to adapt thechosen structure to the specific requirements entailed in the setting-up of the LBO.The reason of the LBO’s impact at his stage stems for the need for seeking the maximumcontractual freedom allowing the adaptation of structure to content. It is indeed a matter ofbeing able to choose in range of instruments made available by corporate law, those allowingto organize as efficiently as possible on the one hand, the legally expected leverage performedin the take-over holding company’s intervention between the rescuer and the financiers takingpart in the take-over holding company’s investor round. The demonstration is first conductedfor a financial set-up at national level (Heading I) then cross-border (Heading II).

Etapas do desenvolvimento econômico no Brasil - um exercício rostowiano / Stages of economic development in Brazil: exercise rostowianoSarmento, Alexandre Dellamura 08 April 2009 (has links)
The main objective of this dissertation is the application of the model of stages of the economical growth of Walt Whitman Rostow to Brazil, identifying the Brazilian takeoff as end of the industrials outbreaks and beginning of the regular industrialization between 1929 and 1954. Besides the Rostow theory served from counterpoint to the two main theories of economical growth existent Brazilians to middles of the decade of 1950, the liberal school and the development school. The discussions and the divergent points among those theories contributed to the understanding of the Brazilian industrialization process, his productivity, concentration and contribution to the economical growth. The identification of the stages took place from way to prove, mainly, the theories of Rostow in relation to the Brazilian take-off and the mechanisms for his propagation, that they should end in the subsequent phases of the theory and, in consequence, to the more equalitarian economical growth and the Welfare State.

Kinematic and Kinetic Tumbling Take-off Comparisons of a Spring-floor and an Air FloorTM: A Pilot StudySands, William A., Kimmel, Wendy L., McNeal, Jeni R., Smith, Sarah L., Penitente, Gabriella, Murray, Steven Ross, Sato, Kimitake, Mizuguchi, Satoshi, Stone, Michael H. 01 January 2013 (has links)
Tumbling take-offs on floor exercise apparatuses of varying stiffness properties may contribute to apparatus behaviors that lead to increased injury exposure. The purpose of this pilot study was to compare the kinematics, kinetics, and timing performance characteristics of a springfloor and a spring-floor with an added Air FloorTM. Five male international gymnasts performed a forward handspring to forward somersault and a round off, flic flac, backward somersault on a standard spring-floor and a spring-floor with an Air FloorTM. Performances were measured via high-speed video kinematics (lower extremity joint angles and positions), electromyography of eight lower extremity muscles, mean peak forces on the feet, and timing. Comparisons of spring-floor types, lower extremity joint angles, lower extremity muscle activations, foot forces, and selected durations were determined. The spring floor with Air FloorTM resulted in longer take-off contact durations than spring-floor alone. Dynamic knee angles may indicate an unexpected and potentially injurious motion of the triceps surae musculotendinous structures. This pilot and hypothesis generating study has suggested future research examining dynamic knee position and angle changes, the role of spring-floor vibration and stiffness in take-offs, and take-off muscle activation alignment with the stiffness of the spring-floor. Pragmatically, there appears to be a convergence of evidence indicating that a slower frequency response of the spring floor may assist tumbling performance and reduce stress and strain in the lower extremity.

Determinants of Atrazine contamination in Iowa homes and occupational exposure in Central AmericaLozier, Matthew Joiner 01 December 2010 (has links)
Background : Atrazine is an agricultural herbicide used extensively in corn production worldwide. Atrazine is an endocrine disruptor and has been linked to many other deleterious health outcomes. Exposure assessment studies have been carried out in Iowa among farm and non-farm populations. However, commercial pesticide applicators have been left out of those studies. Atrazine is also used in developing countries in grain production. In developing countries there is great concern about acute pesticide poisonings, but chronic exposure to less acutely toxic pesticides has not been studied extensively. This study assessed the in-home contamination of atrazine among commercial pesticide applicators in Iowa and then quantitatively analyzed these results with results from similar studies. Occupational inhalation exposure to atrazine was also assessed in Honduras.
Methods : Dust samples were taken from 29 commercial pesticide applicator households in four different locations. This sampling was done once during the atrazine application season and again six months later during winter months to assess atrazine persistence. Occupational and household characteristics were analyzed for associations with atrazine dust levels. Data from two previous studies that analyzed farm and non-farm household dust samples for atrazine were combined with data from the commercial applicator's homes. This new and larger dataset was analyzed to identify which population has the greatest risk for take-home atrazine exposure and what determinants were associated with in-home atrazine dust levels. Lastly, corn production practices in Honduras were evaluated and personal air samples were taken from pesticide applicators during atrazine application to assess inhalation exposure.
Results : The first study found that atrazine levels persist into the winter months in the homes of commercial applicators. Atrazine handling (days, pounds, and acres sprayed) were all positively associated with in-home atrazine levels. Commercial applicators that change their shoes inside had higher atrazine levels. More frequent floor cleaning was associated with lower atrazine levels. The second study identified commercial applicators' homes as the most contaminated compared with farmers who apply atrazine to their own land, farmers who hire out atrazine application, and non-farm homes. Farmers that apply their own atrazine also had significantly higher atrazine levels in their homes. The association between atrazine handling and household atrazine levels was highly significant in this study (p < 0.001). In Honduras, atrazine is applied to corn fields with tractor/boom equipment and manual backpack sprayers. Despite applying about one-fifteenth the amount of atrazine, backpack sprayers are exposed to nearly equal amounts of atrazine via inhalation exposure and likely have greater exposure via the dermal route. Among backpack sprayers, which type of spray nozzle used is associated with inhalation exposure. Among tractor/boom applicators, tractor drivers have much lower inhalation exposure than workers who operate and observe the boom.
Conclusions : The amount of atrazine handled is the most important determinant for predicting in-home atrazine levels in Iowa. Ubiquitous atrazine contamination and its distribution within homes and among household type provide strong evidence for the take-home pathway. While some improvements have been made in Honduras regarding pesticide application, poor farm workers and small farmers still use antiquated pesticide application techniques which leads to a higher risk of inhalation and dermal exposure.

Decision making: being a study to develop a decision-making style to amalgamate best management practice with traditional Thai society and cultureKittisarn, Akkapong Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis studies the development of the decision-making style at Thailand’s Siam City Cement Public Company Limited (SCCC). The research reviewed the literature, including parent and immediate disciplines. The parent discipline was divided into disciplines 1, 2 and 3. Discipline 1 covered the concept of decision-making and its process. It also assessed types of decisions and summarised the model of decision-making. Discipline 2 looked at organisational structure, decision-making and the locus of decision-making. Finally, discipline 3 focused on group decision-making, group consideration in decision-making and enhancing the group decision-making process. In the immediate discipline, the key elements that influence Thai’s decision-making styles were discussed. This encompassed Thai societal and cultural characteristics, Hierarchy, organisational characteristics and decision-making. Moreover, research gaps were also explored and the study then proposed four research propositions. The propositions included directing SCCC to develop an appropriate decision-making style based on the group decision-making strategy. The analysis undertaken was qualitative and employed a case study methodology. The data was collected in SCCC’s Bangkok office between May and September 2002. Data collection was carried out using the Triangulation method. This method employs multiple sources of evidence, including personal interviews, direct and participant observations, documentation and obtaining archival records. The findings confirmed that group decisionmaking should be adopted to enhance the effectiveness of decision-making and efficiency within the firm. Recommendations were also provided for improving practices at the individual, department and organisational level. Finally, contributions to the knowledge, research limitations and areas for further research were discussed.
