Assume the Position: Exploring Discipline Relationships

Travis, Melissa E 10 May 2013 (has links)
Discipline relationships are consensual adult relationships between submissive and dominant partners who employ authority and corporal punishment. This population uses social media to discuss the private nature of their ritualized fantasies, desires, and practices. Participants of these relationships resist a sadomasochistic label of BDSM or domestic abuse. I conducted in-depth interviews and narrative analysis of social media to explore experiences and identities of people in discipline relationships. The sample includes social media bloggers and past and present participants in discipline relationships. I compared explanations participants give for wanting and participating in discipline relationships. I combine identity theory, constructionism, post-structuralism, and critical feminism as an analytic frame to understand this practice sociologically. I found gender differences in the media format and communication style of participants, but the ritualized expressions for discipline relationships remain consistent regardless of gender. The social process of community identification for participants includes coming out, educating others and “inviting in.” The online community provides a forum for relationship negotiation techniques, and encouraging the embrace of non-normative sexual identity. Participants use social media to form a nascent social movement that resists normative views of sexuality and relationships in the dominant culture.

Choices offered, choices chosen in Pasifika early childhood education: A Christchurch Experience

Luafutu-Simpson, Pauline Mary Elizabeth January 2006 (has links)
Current government policy aims to redress the persistent under-participation of Pasifika children in early childhood education by improving the standard and availability of services delivered through Pasifika early childhood initiatives. This research explores the rationale that underpinned the choices of sixteen New Zealand-born Samoan parents in Christchurch by using the qualitative method of in-depth interviews, structured around a questionnaire. Three primary themes emerged from the primary data: Pasifika early childcare provisions; identity issues; and the effect of generational changes in parenting styles. As first and second generation New Zealand-born Samoans, participants' preference vis-ā-vis the types of early childhood initiatives they accessed, reflected trans-generation differences between the original migrants and their offspring. Moreover, some participants and many of their children are of multi-ethnic heritage, exemplifying the changing face of Pasifika people in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Participants were divided into three groups. Findings indicate that Group A parents, who had the highest levels of social, cultural and economic capital, made informed decisions to access Pasifika Education and Childcare Centres in order to ensure their children were acculturated in Samoan language and culture. While there were multiple reasons why Group B parents withdrew their children from Pasifika services they were generally ambivalent about the effectiveness of Pasifika provisions in meeting the needs of their children. Group C parents did not access Pasifika preschool education; barriers to participation included their personal perceptions of alienation from the traditional Samoan community. Findings suggest that government policy formulation processes exclude the voices of stakeholders who demographers predict will comprise an increasingly large percentage of the population of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Pasifika parity in accessing early childhood education is contingent upon service provision that is conducive to meeting the needs of all Pasifika parents, including those who are marginalized by mainstream society and Pasifika communities.

Construction of the academic discipline ekonomistyrning

Sörling, Stig January 2002 (has links)
The purpose of this text is to contribute to theunderstanding of a specific academic discipline (in Swedishcalled Ekonomistyrning). Another purpose is to contribute to arenewal of this field. Theoretical bases are theories from thesociological field like new institutional theory and theoriesof social constructions. The text consists of two parts. Thefirst part is about the academic discipline and the second isabout newer practices and a renewal of the discipline. In thefirst part twelve prominent academics give their views ofdifferent aspects of the discipline. The images are groupedtogether in different categories and also discussed from aninstitutional theory point of view. The second part puts focuson the pragmatic orientation in theory and on two kinds ofnewer production in practice. Two companies that producetelevision programmes and four biotech-companies are described.Interpretations are made regarding the nature of theirmanagement and control activities. Contributions from the firstpart are that (1) there are two aspects of the discipline. Thefield has first of all a strong pragmatic orientation but alsosmall and growing academic influence. The limit (2) for what isconsidered ekonomistyrning are wider and not so obvious asbefore. Traditional parts of the discipline (3) like budgetinghave been questioned and reconsidered. Consultants (4) havecreated room for new concepts like JIT, BPR, TQM, BSC and SCMinside the discipline. Contributions from the second part arethat (1) individuals are self managed and guided by theirknowledge and that these companies use (2) a "new" kind ofmanagement systems like e.g. milestones. These kinds of newpractices give vital contributions to the discussion about arenewal of the discipline. Arguments are given (3) forregarding management and control as human activities ratherthan technical questions. This calls for an extended use of newmodels, of a different language and of new images based onsocial sciences.

Del Rey, Alexandre 24 January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this work is to explore Bayesian Networks as a tool to reduce uncertainties in the process of Competitive Intelligence. Here, by reviewing the concepts of Strategic Planning, Decision Making, Competitive Intelligence and the ability to infer of Bayesian Networks, it is proposed an approach for using these networks with this purpose. For this, a case study presents a step by step implementation of the proposed approach in a simulated management environment. In the case study, each step of the modeling scenarios is described in detail, emphasizing the care required for this modeling. With the modeling complete, two quasi-experiments were conducted in simulated environments to assess the perception and performance of decision makers who used Bayesian networks in comparison to the decision makers who have not used it. Data from the first quasi-experiment were not reliable and the second quasi-experiment did not form a representative sample from the statistical point of view. Nevertheless, it was possible to make contributions through the observations and data from these quasi-experiments conducted. From the standpoint of procedural, flaws in the construction of quasiexperiments and suggestions for improvement were presented. Regarding the tool modeled and constructed based on Bayesian Networks, it was possible to identify user perceptions regarding their use and suggestions for how to improve it. As for the performance data obtained, it was possible to examine in the second quasi-experiment, evidence, while not conclusive, that justify the new studies on the subject. Based on the literature and the evidence obtained, it is the possible that Bayesian Networks can be used for reducing uncertainty in the process of competitive intelligence and decisionmaking.

Autogestions et appropriations du travail par les classes populaires en Argentine / Self-managements and appropriations of work by working classes in Argentina

Quijoux, Maxime 17 November 2009 (has links)
Since the 1990s in Argentina, both the crisis and the collapse of the national economy (December 19th and 20th 2001) led thousands of workers to take over their company and turn it into their own. Though the strife was tough at times, most takes did become work cooperatives. The striking point about these specific upturns resides in the composition of their members: they highly differ from well-known past experiments of the kind for the new associates were zealously and closely linked to their employer. Indeed, the creation of the cooperatives was often delayed. We may even add that these employees had no other choice in order to reach their only goal which was to keep their work at all cost. In this light, it is of paramount interest to focus on the origins of the mobilization; the way they organized themselves is mainly relevant: on the one hand, what were the reasons that motivated model employees to turn against their employer? On the other hand, how did they struggle? Meanwhile they agreed with their former administration's politics, we may wonder how they eventually managed to gather their strengths and cooperate to make the best of their cooperative? What were the issues they had to overcome? Based on an eighteen months-long field work combining interviews as well as times of both neutral and participant observation in the heart of two industries, Brukman (clothing business) and La Nueva Esperanza (helium balloons), this thesis aims at questioning the status of work and its derived blue-collar cultures through the theoretical stance labeled “the appropriations of work”.

The data were collected through applies questionnaire to 60 (sixty) micro and small entrepreneurs of the segment of commerce of construction materials located in the city of Rio de Janeiro and Baixada Fluminense. It is important to stand out that this sample of entrepreneurs is requested to daily take innumerable decisions on the most varied aspects of its business and, usually, without the support of specialized consultants. It was observed that, the majority of the people, uses heuristical in the simplification of the decision process and, in many cases suffers the effect from the same vieses emanated of, generating decisions oblique. The collected material will be able to serve of base for the elaboration of deeper studies, with the purpose to help to the elaboration of materials for programs of managerial development for this important group of entrepreneurs, who are the generating greater of jobs of this country, allowing that they improve its power to decide processes and they can gain more efficiency and effectiveness, forming base for the growth of its companies.

Oliveira, José Antônio Colvara January 2007 (has links)
A robótica é a concretização dessas várias ações. / Creating objects and making it move, choosing specifically how, where and when to move, have been revealing to be activities of interest to people of all ages. Robotics is the concretization of all this actions. Encouraging the search for solutions, opening possibilities for plans and creations, involving coordinated actions, in groups or lonely, dividing tasks and time, the individuals involve themselves in such a way that it calls the observers attention, not mattering if they are parents, professors or studious. This thesis has developed through these three observation points, which lead us to search in children firstly for their construction of the concept of robotics, then for their way of explaining, in robotics, what they learn, until we get to a grading of these activities in the formal operating stage. From these three experiments we have reached a level that has allowed us to elaborate a proposal of formulation of dimensioning of the central mechanisms of individual action and of the intrinsic central properties of the object during this taken of awareness, in the robotics activities, through a parallelism with the Piagetian studies about the taken of awareness.
