Kairallah, Sthefanie Kalil January 2020 (has links)
Thus, in the contemporary educational perspective, the challenges arising from this new era are emphasized, since, on the one hand, these tools can enhance the work of educators, without spatiotemporal delimitation, on the other, they require support and Digital Competence from teachers and students (UNESCO, 2008, 2014, 2016). In this sense, there are countless discussions about teacher education, in a critical-reflexive (FREIRE, 1979; MOURA-FILHO, 2011) and perceptive view (MERLEAU-PONTY, 1999; MATOS E JARDILINO, 2016), for teaching languages combined with the use of technologies (BAX, 2003; LEFFA, 2012; PAIVA, 2013; MARQUES-SCHÄFER AND ROZENFELD, 2017). Furthermore, there is a mismatch between the transformational speed of DICTs and the delay in integrating them in Education and teacher education, as well as the conditions of infrastructure, proposition and use of technological resources (KENNISNET, 2015; ALMEIDA AND VALENTE, 2016). Based on this scenario, the present work aims to analyze the perceptions of English teachers in the public school about the relevance of using DICTs in the classroom, the infrastructure for such use ... Reflective-reciprocal teaching strategy on student teachers' academic achievement and attitude

Ojo, Gbemisola Motunrayo 12 1900 (has links)
Economics as a subject is one of the sciences that is required for any nation's development, but its teaching and learning has not being easy, which has resulted in poor student achievement. In search of solutions, this study has considered the reflective-reciprocal teaching technique and investigates its effectiveness on student teachers' academic achievement and attitude in the subject. Four Null hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The study adopted the quantitative method of inquiry, using specifically a pre-test, post-test quasi-experimental design. Three Colleges of Education out of 22 federal Colleges of Education in Nigeria were purposively selected based on certain criteria to be the sites for the study. The sample for the study consisted of 178 second year Economics student teachers; the participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group or a control group. The pre-test scores of the participants was obtained using achievement test, numerical ability test questionnaire. Participants in the experimental group were exposed to six weeks of teaching using the reflective-reciprocal teaching strategy while participants in the control group were exposed to the traditional method of teaching. The quantitative data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of proportions, frequencies, means and standard deviations, independent t- tests and paired t-tests to compare differences between two groups, Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and ANOVA for repeated measures. The Multiple Classification Analysis (MCA) aspect of ANCOVA was used to determine the magnitude of the performance of the groups. The findings of the study show that there exists a significant difference in the achievement of student-teachers in Economics when taught using reflective-reciprocal teaching strategies compared to the conventional method. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that Economics student teachers should make effective use of reflective-reciprocal teaching strategies in the classroom in order to further enhance the achievement of their students in the subject. In addition, the Federal and States Ministries of Education should encourage the use of the reflective-reciprocal teaching strategies by organizing workshops for educational trainers and teachers to better equip them in the use of the reflective-reciprocal teaching strategy. The use of reflective-reciprocal teaching strategies should be encouraged in other teaching subjects as well. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Ed. (Didactics)

Integrating scholarship and continuing professional development (CPD) in the natural sciences at a South African university

Frick, Beatrice Liezel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Curriculum Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The worldwide emphasis on lifelong learning, the continuous and fast pace of change and the competitive nature of practice forces professionals in all sectors to remain abreast of the latest knowledge, skills and/or innovations. This has contributed to the evolution of the term continuing professional development (CPD). The university lecturer in the natural sciences functions within a unique area of professional practice, as the practice requires scholarship – which contains elements of both subject-specific and educational expertise. It remains unclear how CPD within this professional arena is defined in terms of need, purpose and provision. The current quality of learning and evaluation of learning also warrants investigation. This study aimed to investigate how CPD could play a role in scholarly development from the perspective of lecturers in the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University (South Africa). A qualitative approach was followed. Semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample, followed by an open-ended questionnaire with a stratified random sample, were used. The results are reported in seven chapters, of which the first provides an orientation to the conducted study. The second chapter focuses on placing CPD in the context of scholarly practice in the natural sciences at Stellenbosch University. The third chapter investigates the provision of CPD in the natural sciences that could enhance integrated scholarship. The fourth chapter investigates the quality of learning within CPD as a measure of scholarly development. The fifth chapter reports on the evaluation of scholars’ learning in CPD in the natural sciences at Stellenbosch University, while the sixth chapter focuses on current issues and future trends in CPD for natural science lecturers at Stellenbosch University that will motivate an integrated and holistic approach to scholarly development – based on their own insights into their professional practice. The final chapter concludes the study with recommendations for the future practice of CPD within this sphere. The main findings indicate a difficulty in defining CPD, as these lecturers see themselves as a diverse group not easily confined to the traditional boundaries of a professional sphere. This difficulty in defining CPD has a direct influence on the lecturers’ need for CPD and the purpose of CPD within this sector of higher education. The provision of CPD for lecturers in the natural sciences does not conform to an integrated and coherent system of provision between the different stakeholders. Many initiatives are informal and are initiated according to individual needs. There is evidence of collaborative efforts within the different disciplines, although they are limited in terms of transdisciplinarity and true integration of scholarly roles. As a result of the complexities of academic practice, the quality of learning within the existing CPD initiatives is not easily determined. The progression from novice to expert is a continuous process, which is mostly self-directed and reflective in nature. Formalised government interventions, Total Quality Management systems, leadership development, mentorship and situated learning are presented as possible means of enhancing the quality of learning in CPD. The present study indicates the lack of appropriate evaluation of learning in CPD as the main shortcoming in the total process of CPD conceptualisation, provision, quality assurance and evaluation within the study population. Accountability for the monetary investment and energy spent on any CPD initiative is therefore limited. Portfolios, peer review, open-ended problems and simulations, auditing and observation of practice are presented as viable options for effective evaluation of learning in CPD that could enhance integrated scholarship. The future trends in CPD are discussed in terms of the future context of practice; the role of and need for experts; how experts will be educated and how they will maintain their competence. This provides a holistic view of scholarly development through CPD within the context of lecturers in the natural sciences in the Stellenbosch University.

An exercise in how experienced expatriate EFL teachers' practical wisdom can be used to problematise Saudi Arabian ELC syllabi

Sharkey, Garry January 2014 (has links)
In the past 30 years there has been a steady and growing appreciation in the literature of the importance and value of teachers' practical wisdom (TPW) - or phronesis as it is also known - to further an understanding of classroom practice and of the need to find ways to help teachers generate and share their perspectives with others. Nevertheless, the potential of this kind of knowledge (understood by Aristotle to be both practical and moral in its orientation) to contribute valuable insights to educational debates has still to be realised. Rather, educational decisions about policy and practice in many contexts (whether at a national or institutional level) are still largely driven by theoretical and technical knowledge perspectives and teacher practical wisdom perspectives are still often under-valued and remain under-represented in educational literature. One of the main reasons for this put forward in this thesis is the tendency in much of the literature to see this form of knowledge as classroom bound rather than to realise the ways in which it can inform broader pedagogical discussions. Bearing all of the above in mind, the aim of the study reported in this thesis into the TPW of 14 experienced expatriate English as a foreign language teachers (EEEFLTs) working in English language centres (ELCs) across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is threefold. Its first aim is to provide a platform for the EEEFLTs to demonstrate the contribution their TPW can potentially make in addressing syllabus related issues in the KSA ELCs they have worked and, in doing so, show how the use of TPW is not confined to the classroom. Its second aim is to increase the visibility of the participants' TPW and thus raise awareness of the importance of research into TPW and to provide a model for how this can be conducted. The study's final aim is to provide a deeper understanding of the nature of TPW. Located in the interpretive paradigm, this study uses a TPW-friendly methodology to investigate TPW: interpretive phronetic educational research (IPER), which approaches and conducts educational research through a moral and practical problem-driven lens. This understanding drives the study's methodology and all stages of its data collection and analysis and the methods used in both. The goal of such methods is an epistemological one to generate TPW whilst empowering it also by highlighting its validity and how it is easily articulated - and thus captured - and not confined to the classroom. To assist with its articulation and capture, the study employs a process defined as Problematisation: a four-stage process consisting of reflection, problematisation, deliberation and articulation which drives and shapes the semi-structured interviews the study employs and the secondary research questions that inform the primary research question. The study concludes that the EEEFLTs use their TPW as a lens (that has 12 qualities) through which to view KSA ELC syllabi and, in doing so, identify many problems with the syllabi and subsequent consequences and suggest solutions to address both. These problems, consequences and solutions have been organised under six prominent categories that represent six main problem areas to emerge from the data that suggest the syllabi are teacher, textbook and test-centred, top-down, teacher-proof and time-driven. These categories represent six problem areas that in turn reflect the problematic, negative and disempowering context from which the data informing such categories and themes have been drawn. In this study, TPW is considered disempowered knowledge as a result of the disempowering context within which it has been acquired and is used. Previous TPW studies have been conducted in more positive settings and have perhaps for this reason not focused on TPW's disempowerment. In contrast, this study takes on a much more political role as it explores TPW's disempowerment in the KSA ELC context as well as in the broader context of academia and the literature. TPW's lack of visibility in TESOL and education has several implications because unless TPW achieves greater visibility, it may fade into extinction and its potential may never be realised. This study has been conducted in an attempt to prevent this happening.

Profession et professionnalisation des enseignants en France, en République Démocratique Allemande et dans les nouveaux länder de l'Allemagne : 1970-2000 / Teachers profession and professionalisation in France, GDR and in the new german länder : 1970-2000

Many, Guillaume 19 March 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to establish a comparison of the teachers professions evolution and lived careers, in the time period going from 1970 to 2000. This period allows us to concentrate the comparison on the political evolutions, which are different in the two considered geographic areas: in GDR and Germany, the Reunification disrupts the whole society and leads the land in a total reform period; in France, the political and societal evolution is, in comparison, quite linear. The reforms about the teachers education and status are taken in this work under the perspective of the different types of modernization. After the justification of the interest of comparing France, the GDR and the new Länder of Germany, this thesis aims the definition of the types of modernization we can find in the considered geographic and politic contexts. The methodology we used in this work to gather and analyse the data is the interactionist profession sociology, and the empiric data used is a corpus of teachers career interviews realised in Lyon and Leipzig. The interviewed teachers began their career as teacher between 1970 and 2000.A second part is centered in the observation of the evolution of the school systems in the concerned countries, and especially teachers education and status. The historical and educative contexts we used for this study are defined here. The third part is the empiric part, and is about the analysis of the interviews. The evolutions the teachers told about the profession are compared in this part. It is composed of eight categories, built after the interviews analysis. They are at the heart of the comparison, and shows the categories we built under many lights: temporal evolution, political evolution, professional groups, personal and common features.

It is justified by the need to also understand what involves my own participation in many continuing education courses with the purpose of gathering subsidies that provide me directing, coordinating, supervising, and developing courses of this kind. This research is theoretically grounded on studies about pre-service teacher education (Imbernon, 2000, Vianna, 2004; Martins, 2004, Santos and Mendes Sobrinho, 2006; Gómez, 1995; Mizukami, 2002; Brito, 2006, Contreras, 2002; Brazil, 2002) ; continuing teacher education (Marin, 1995; Mizukami, 2002; Destro, 1995; Contreras, 2002; Smyth, 1991); English teachers education (Celani, 2002; Paiva, 2005; Dutra, 2003, Brazil, 2001, Castro, 1999 ; Celani and Collins, 2003) and concepts of reflection (Schön, 1995, 2000). The methodological approach adopted in this study was the hermeneutic-phenomenological one (van Manen, 1990, Freire, 2007). The description and interpretation of the phenomenon in focus was undertaken through textual registers obtained through questionnaires answered by 57 student-teachers enrolled in a three-semester continuing education course offered to public school English teachers. The research results reveal that participation of public school English teachers in that continuing education courses is unique, since it results in a constant search for improvement and also in change related to practice. The results also allow me to say that the research phenomenon was experienced in three different ways because each semester was played by a different group of student-teachers who was in a different period of the course and into a different reflective moment as well / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo descrever e interpretar o fenômeno da participação de professores de inglês da rede pública de ensino em um curso de formação contínua e justifica-se pela necessidade de também entender o que envolve a minha participação em vários cursos de formação contínua com a finalidade de obter subsídios que me proporcionem dirigir, coordenar, supervisionar, bem como elaborar cursos dessa natureza.

The ethnographic research analyzed in which aspects the WPM meets the training needs of teachers and in which it does not contemplate them, in order to re-signify: the end-goal of WPM as a formative space; the attendance to the training needs of teachers; children's learning; the moments of study, exchange, evaluation and collective decision that guarantee the collaborative teaching-learning process, in a nursery that is part of a municipal education network, with the educational guidelines of its policy. As a hypothesis, it was considered that the Pedagogical Coordinator (PC) has planned WPM with the aim of this space - the continuous formation of the teachers -, but its methodology is restricted to its own reading of the needs of the teachers, without to listen to these professionals, disregarding their history, their culture and the identity of the school. Initially, the picture of the education of the city and its peculiarities is presented, The history of Early Childhood Education and its trajectory in the municipality is also reported. Next, the importance of continuing education and the role of PC to ensure teacher-centered teacher training in the perspective of collaborative networking in the teacher training process is presented. The methodology used in the research involved teachers and PC. The data were collected through a questionnaire, interview, documentary analysis, and records of in situ observations, carried out by the researcher. The theoretical basis of the research is based on the studies of Placco (2003; 2006; 2010; 2012; 2013; 2017), Almeida (2003; 2012; 2016), André (2005; 2010; 2016), Souza (2001; 2012), Tardif (2014), Dubar (2005), Ciampa (1986), among others, about school-centered training and teacher identity. The analysis of the data shows that the greater training need of teachers is related to the practice developed in the classroom, although it reveals the predominance of contradictions, regarding the perception of teachers feel - or not - contemplated in their needs. The contradictory answers also took place regarding the listening and the possibilities of participation of the teachers during the meetings. The analysis also pointed out that the three-hour meetings during the night are tiring and that, at times, there is a loss of focus of the discussions, evidencing the need to elaborate guidelines that are more articulated to the real needs of the teachers. Strong interference was also identified with the demands of the Secretary of Education in the definition of the guidelines, which compromises the time of meetings and meeting the demands of teachers. The need for investment in interpersonal and collective relations was also perceived as a way to reduce the incidence of subjects discussed by teachers in informal spaces, called in the research as "pedagogical corridors".

Ed. (Didactics)
