Nieuwoudt, Susanna Maria January 2003 (has links)
This research was undertaken to determine the influence of a video class system on the strategic teaching and learning of school mathematics. A literature investigation served as a frame of reference for the planning, execution and assessment of the empirical investigation. Some of the approaches which have the greatest influence on the learning of school mathematics, namely the behaviourist, cognitive and constructivist approaches, are described and, where necessary, critically assessed. Factors which influence the learning of school mathematics are discussed in an interrelated manner and are used to identify the features of the strategic learning of school mathematics. It is then attempted to determine how teaching should take place to enable the strategic learning of school mathematics. To reach this objective, different approaches to the teaching of mathematics are discussed, based on approaches to the learning of mathematics, and the influence of these on the teaching of school mathematics is determined, based on the literature investigation. Different factors which influence the teaching of mathematics are identified and used to describe the characteristics of the effective teacher, who teaches mathematics for the strategic learning of the subject. The empirical investigation involved a quantitative as well as a qualitative investigation. In the quantitative investigation an actual experimental design with a pre-test and post-tests was used. Video recordings were made with one experimental group (video recording class) and delivered (played back) with another experimental group (video delivery class). The control group received conventional mathematics teaching. A quantitative field investigation was undertaken by means of an adapted LASSI-HS to establish the influence of the video class system used in the investigation on the study and learning strategies of the learners. In this way the influence on the strategic learning of mathematics could be determined. At the same time the influence of the video class system on the mathematics performance of the learners was established, in order to determine the extent of success of the use of the video class system. A qualitative investigation by means of an observation schedule, together with the analysis of video recordings of mathematics lessons, was used to determine the influence of the video class system on the teaching of mathematics. The video class system did not have a negative or a positive influence on the performance of either the video recording classes, the video delivery classes or the control classes of the schools who participated in the research. Neither did the video class system have a positive or a negative influence on the use of learning and study strategies (concerning mathematics) of the different class groups who participated in the research. That means that the video class system did not negatively influence strategic learning in learners who may use it. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Education))--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2003

Dumbliauskienė, Violeta 21 August 2006 (has links)
Pupils‘ mobile evolution – is one of the most difficult stage for teachers‘ while teaching pupils on a general development basic at schools of the fifth form. It develops pupils‘ skills, abilities, practical experience, musicalor person‘s culture. In the post – graduate paper are analysed pupils‘ age peculiarities, their ability to transfer from primary to ground level and to feel mobile and competently at the same time; pupils‘ mobile evolution‘s presumptions are used a strategies during music lessons. In the paper is clearing up pupils‘ mobile evolution by using mobile teaching strategies of interaction during music lessons. Object: Pupils‘ mobile evolution using teaching strategies of interaction during music lessons of the fifth form. Aim: to clear up pupils‘ mobile presumptions while using teaching strategies of interaction during music lessons of the fifth form. Objectives: 1.Look over literatures‘ articles and clear up manifestations during music lessons. 2.To find out the appropriate teaching strategies of developing abilities during music lessons. 3.To spread out the possibilities of mobile teaching strategies during music lessons. The researth confirmed hypothesis, that pupils‘ mobile evolution changes according to the teaching mobile strategies. While using these strategies is rising pupils‘ motivation, their dispersijon and it‘s lead to mobile evolution. There are analysed pupils of fifth form, their dispersijon in a training context, age... [to full text]

Story composition and process analysis using a computer tool based system

Holdich, Kate E. January 2004 (has links)
The performance of children in writing is a cause for concern: national testing at age 11 indicates that too many pupils underachieve in writing. The purpose of the project outlined in this thesis was to design a computer tool which would assist children aged between 7 and 11 years achieve a higher standard in narrative writing. The project involved four phases of research. First, a review of the research literature and government documents relating to literacy was undertaken, to establish differences between good and poor narrative writing, differences in the approach of mature and beginner writers, the natural course of children's writing development, effective methods of teaching, ways of assessing writing quality and approaches adopted by other computer applications. Secondly, a computer tool which scaffolds the narrative writing process was designed. HARRY delivers conversational prompts, stored in Microsoft Access databases, in a conference like-sitaation. The tool acts as a bridge between the writing approach adopted by beginner writers and the mature approach whilst demonstrating features of successful narrative writing. Thirdly, a method for automating the assessment of children's written grammar was devised. CHECK TEXT, a computer utility program, provides quantitative analyses of specific grammar features, facilitating comparisons between examples of stories written at Key Stage 2. Both applications use ASP and HTML files, for implementation on a web server. Finally, two small scale studies were conducted in a primary school - the first to investigate the effects of HARRY's assistance upon children's writing performance and behaviour, and the second to investigate the effects of using the system upon children's subsequent writing performance. The first study showed that when supported by HARRY, the children adopted a more reflective writing approach and they produced more successful narratives, provided they followed the advice. The second study showed that HARRY can accelerate children's writing development - most of the children wrote subsequently better stories and they all felt that they had improved. All the children liked using the tool and thought that HARRY made writing stories easier. HARRY's limitations are indicated, and potential developments and further investigations are proposed.

Constructing Mathematical Knowledge Using Multiple Representations: A Case Study of a Grade One Teacher

Jao, Limin 14 December 2009 (has links)
This study examined how an elementary teacher fostered student mathematical understanding and the strategies that she used to help students learn mathematical concepts. A case study of a Grade 1 teacher is described based on qualitative data from interviews and classroom observation sessions using a peer coaching model. The evidence from the study suggests that this teacher benefited from professional development opportunities to gain deeper insights regarding her teaching practices. There were five major findings: (1) enthusiasm for improving her practices was necessary to successfully meet her goals; (2) this teacher’s role in the classroom was important to facilitate the construction of knowledge; (3) the classroom was an environment where her students felt safe; (4) a variety of tasks and strategies that students of varied abilities, interests and aptitudes can enjoy were used; and (5) multiple representations (including the use of manipulatives) were used to scaffold the construction of knowledge.

Effect of educational neuroscience techniques in the university aural skills classroom

Horton, Staci Marie January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Curriculum and Instruction Programs / Jana Fallin / The purpose of this study was to test student achievement in the course of one semester while enrolled in an Aural Skills music classroom. The research used the framework from Caine and Caine’s 1991 Brain/Mind Learning Principles (later revised and republished in 2005 by Caine, Caine, McClintic and Klimek) and Jensen’s Brain-Compatible Teaching theory (1997). The research was completed at a mid-American university. Treatment classrooms taught using strategies to implement novelty, student engagement, and scaffolding success techniques based on a subset of Caine’s et al. Brain/Mind Learning Principles. The researcher used a quasi- experimental design with a treatment and control group, gathering quantitative pre-test/post-test data from student assessments before and after the implementation of the research-based brain- compatible strategies in the university Aural Skills classroom. The study followed four graduate teaching assistants who were new to collegiate teaching over the course of a semester; two were put in a training program and trained on how to create novelty, perpetuate student engagement, and build levels of success and two were left alone, to continue with a lecture style of teaching. At the end of the study, student test scores were examined to determine significance of the treatment. Results of this study are inconclusive, due to a methodology fail during the grading of the pre and post-tests. In the final chapter, preliminary findings indicate that academic gains were maintained within the control classes of Aural Skills I and III, and academic gains were maintained within the treatment class of Aural Skills II. The study is concluded with a discussion on methodological improvements necessary to provide reliable results within the bounds of educational research.

Vilka undervisningsstrategier främjar elevers utveckling i läsförståelse? / Which teaching strategies promote students´development in reading comprehension? : A qualitative literature study of teachers teaching strategies in primary school.

Lundbom, Maria, Bäckstedt, Zola January 2018 (has links)
Analysen resulterade i tre övergripande teman.

Digital Storytelling in the Classroom: Three Case Studies

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: This study follows three secondary teachers as they facilitate a digital storytelling project with their students for the first time. All three teachers were not specifically trained in digital storytelling in order to investigate what happens when a digital storytelling novice tries to do a project like this with his or her students. The study follows two high school English teachers and one middle school math teacher. Each teacher's experience is shared in a case study, and all three case studies are compared and contrasted in a cross-case analysis. There is a discussion of the types of projects the teachers conducted and any challenges they faced. Strategies to overcome the challenges are also included. A variety of assessment rubrics are included in the appendix. In the review of literature, the history of digital storytelling is illuminated, as are historical concepts of literacy. There is also an exploration of twenty-first century skills including multiliteracies such as media and technology literacy. Both the teachers and their students offer suggestions to future teachers taking on digital storytelling projects. The dissertation ends with a discussion of future scholarship in educational uses of digital storytelling. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction 2011

"Nós no mundo": exploração de estratégias pedadógicas

Konrath, Mary Lúcia Pedroso January 2007 (has links)
The objective of the dissertation is to check and analyze the different strategies employed in the teachers' planning concerning the learning object "Nós no mundo". The learning object was introduced in an extension course for teachers, entitled Teachers' training for evaluation and use of digital resources in Education, conducted at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in the second half of 2006. For the analysis, I selected 5 plans made by 8 teachers, 3 testimonies and the transcribed video of the plans presentation realized by the extension course students. This research had as reference the authors Gandin (1985, 2006), Rodrigues (2002, 2003), Xavier (2002), Masetto (2006) and Moran (2006). The analyses were organized in 5 categories, extracted from the plans: 1) pedagogical approach, 2) methodological orientation of the plan, 3) role of the teacher, 4) technics and 5) content. It was verified that in most plans, the use of the learning object "Nós no mundo" provided an activity orientated by pedagogical mediation, as well as the fact that the pedagogical strategies planned by the teachers are also linked to their formation, conception of pedagogical approach, experience and view of the possible uses of the technological resources in their pedagogical practice.
