Migraine and Stress : An Internet administered Multimodal Behavioral Treatment Intervention

Hedborg, Kerstin January 2011 (has links)
Migraine is a disabling neurological disorder with high prevalence, the clinical manifestations of which are highly dependent on stress. The overall theme of the present thesis was to address aspects of stress in migraine. A multimodal behavioral treatment (MBT) program was developed specifically designed for migraine and focusing on stress as a trigger and an intervention was performed using this Internet-administered program. Migraine symptoms were followed via an Internet administered diary and questionnaires were answered at regular intervals during the 11-month study period. The thesis is based on four papers: In Paper I, life events and current stress, personality traits, and gender were studied cross-sectionally in 106 women and 44 men with migraine, who suffered at least two attacks a month at inclusion. Paper II describes a randomized controlled trial of the MBT program performed on 58 women and 25 men recruited from participants of the study described in Paper I. In the MBT study participants were randomized into one control group and two MBT groups, one of which received hand massage as part of the treatment. In Paper III, complete migraine drug use and changes in use and in drug efficacy during the MBT program were studied. In Paper IV, the salivary cortisol levels of MBT participants were evaluated as a biological stress marker. The MBT program proved effective in decreasing migraine headache; it was feasible and there was low attrition. Moreover, MBT resulted in decreased migraine drug use and increased drug efficacy, but had no discernible effects on salivary cortisol profiles. No effect of hand massage on migraine headache frequency was seen. Personality trait profiling revealed high scores for the neuroticism factor. Stress susceptibility was the single most aberrant personality trait and correlated highly with the reported level of current stress and with experienced negative life events. Gender differences included higher scores for women on trait anxiety, negative life events, depressive mood, anxiety, tension type headache, use of triptans, and efficacy of analgesics, whereas men displayed higher use of analgesics. In conclusion, the efficacy and low attrition associated with the present MBT program appears promising and timely with regard to the development of better and more accessible migraine treatment. Stress susceptibility, gender, negative life events and psychosomatic comorbidity are important factors to consider in relation to the care of persons with migraine.

Our theory and critical resources are supported by works written by Per Seyersted(1979) and Nadilza Moreira(2003) both references names for Chopin's scholarship.Besides, we used Beauvoir' (1970), Woolf' (2012) and Showalter's(1979) critical studies to help us to develop our understanding of the 19th century social-hisorical women's context in the USA. For the study of representation we used the concept fromAna Gabriela Macedo e Ana Luisa Amaral(2005). To support our analysis on the role of the narrative voice we used Chris Baldick(1991) Our conclusion is that: Edna Pontellier represents a multiplicity of images and they are presented to the reader as the narrative develops itself showing Edna's multiples “awakenings” as a woman in transition.

Our analysis is an attempt through Gender Studies to trace the representation of the feminine on these two literary masterpieces. To achieve that, it focuses its analysis on the two main characters, Edna Pontellier, from The awakening, and Edna/Eduarda, from Riacho Doce, to show how those women are different from the female models created by the patriarchal system that rules the social setting in which those female characters are placed. Because these two heroines do not correspond to what is expected from them, they face a world which isolates them; finding only on the symbolic representation of the sea the first and the last space for their longing.

AN EXAMINATION OF RICHARD OWEN ROBERTS’S THEOLOGY OF REVIVAL

Coleman, David Rocky 02 January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation examines Richard Owen Roberts’s (1931-) life and ministry to present his theology of revival. Chapter 1 examines the need for clarity in the topic of revival for the church today. It discusses my background in the topic area, and the process which guided the study. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the research questions explored during the research and writing process of this dissertation. Chapter 2 contains a biography of the significant points of Roberts’s life and ministry. It presents some background of the time period in which he grew up, his early childhood, conversion, call to ministry, family life, preaching and bookstore ministries, and his legacy. A personal interview provides the content and support for the chapter. Chapter 3 surveys Roberts’s published works and sermons to develop a complete theology of revival. In particular it examines his teachings on the following topics as the topic relates to revival: definitions, God, man, conversion, the church, the community, results, hindrances, and true revival. Through the study of these areas the reader is presented with a thorough examination of Roberts’s theology of revival. Chapter 4 focuses on two significant connection points that Roberts has made in his ministry in revival—repentance and history. The chapter explores how and why Roberts has made these two connections. It examines his publications and teachings on the topics to demonstrate that from Roberts’s perspective one cannot have revival without repentance. Additionally, his ministry demonstrates that the church is best equipped for revival by examining the ways in which God has moved among his people in the past. Chapter 5 demonstrates the need for Roberts’s theology of revival in the church today. It examines the shift that the church underwent in its understanding and practices of revival over the last century and a half, and it discusses how Roberts’s understanding of revival can bring helpful changes in this area. The chapter concludes with some critique of Roberts’s theology and practice of ministry. Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation with final thoughts on Roberts’s theology of revival and its impact on the church. It also includes with several areas in which further study of Roberts and revival could be undertaken by other researchers.

Fréquence et contenu du rapport de rêve : approches comportementales et neurophysiologiques / Content and frequency of dream reports : psychological and neurophysiological correlates

Vallat, Raphaël 08 December 2017 (has links)
Since the dawn of time, humans have sought to understand the nature and meaning of their dreams. However, despite millennia of philosophical speculation and more than a century of scientific exploration, several questions regarding dreams remain pending. One question that constitutes the core problematic of this thesis relates to why there are such individual differences in the frequency of dream recall, or in other words, why some people remember up to several dreams per morning (High-recallers, HR) while some hardly ever recall one (Low-recallers, LR). To characterize the cerebral and behavioral correlates of this variability, we compared the sleep microstructure (Study 1), as well as the brain functional connectivity in the minutes following awakeningfrom sleep, a period marked by sleep inertia (Study 2). Among other results, we have shown that just after awakening, HR demonstrated a greater functional connectivity within regions involved in memory processes (default mode network). We proposed that this reflect a differential neurophysiological profile, which could facilitate in HRthe retrieval of dream content upon awakening. Second, the numerous answers to the recruitment questionnaire of this study allowed us to conduct an epidemiological survey to characterize the sleep and dream habits of a large sample of French college students from Lyon 1 University (Study 3). In another study, we focused on the relationships between waking-life and dream content (Study 4). Our results enhanced and refined our comprehension of the factors influencing the likelihood of incorporation of waking-life elements into dreams, and provided support for the hypothesis of an active role of dreaming in emotional regulation.Lastly, we designed a free and open-source software dedicated to the visualization and analysis of polysomnographic recordings (Study 5), which aims at providing an intuitive and portable graphical interface to students and researchers working on sleep

Kate Chopin's The Awakening: Narcissism in the Suicide and Sexuality of Edna Pontellier

Lehman, Suzanne M. (Suzanne Marie) 12 1900 (has links)
The central figure in The Awakening, Edna Pontellier, is shown in this thesis to pursue a narcissistic flight from existential reality. Following a review of contemporary criticism, Edna Pontellier's narcissism is discussed in connection with her sexuality and suicide. Sources cited range from biographies of Kate Chopin to scholarly articles to the works of modern psychologists. The emphasis throughout the thesis is on the wealth of interpretations that currently exist on The Awakening as well as the potential for further -study and interpretation in the future. Rather than viewing The Awakening as a purely feministic novel, it is stressed that The Awakening can transcend such categorization and be appreciated on many levels.

Herstory: female artists' resistance in The Awakening, Corregidora, and The Dew Breaker

Schaefer, Mercedez L. 06 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / For women in patriarchal societies, life is stitched with silence and violence. This is especially true for women of color. In a world that has cast women as invisible and voiceless, to create from the margins is to demand to be seen and heard. Thus, women’s art has never had the privilege of being art for art’s sake and instead is necessarily involved in the work of articulating and (re)writing female experience. When women seek, through their work and art, to feel deeply and connect with other women, they tap into what Audre Lorde has famously termed “the power of the erotic.” Lorde suggests that to acknowledge and trust those deepest feelings within our bodies is a subversive power that spurs social change. In the following work, novels by Kate Chopin, Gayl Jones, and Edwidge Danticat are linked by their female characters who seek the erotic via their art of choice and, in doing so, resist disempowerment and explore the life-giving nature of female connection. Furthermore, because the authors themselves are engaged in rendering the female experience visible, the novels discussed actively converse with their respective waves of feminism and propel social activism and feminist discourse. Hence, this project provides both a close reading of The Awakening, Corregidora, and The Dew Breaker, and a broader contention on the role of women’s literature in social justice.
