Assessing laboratory report writing skills of first entering bachelor of science students

Veldtman, Helga Delene January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (English Studies)) --University of Limpopo, 2020 / Conventional laboratory report writing skills present an enormous challenge to first entering science students including the Bachelor of Science (BSc) students at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMHSU). First entering students are expected to meet essential tertiary discourse requirements and standards consistent with their scientific community. The purpose of this study was to explore how content lecturers in cognate departments assess laboratory report writing skills of first entering BSc students. The research design was exploratory and a mixed approach was used. Students sat for a criterion-referenced test and interviews were conducted with content lecturers to collect data; quantitative basic statistical interrogation of the basic data points and post interview analysis were performed. Some of the key findings of this exploration was that most first entering BSc students are in a dire situation regarding the laboratory report writing genre; they are unable to communicate comprehensive and intelligible information in the written laboratory reports. Thus, content lecturers and English language lecturers from the Department of Language Proficiency (DLP) need to strategically collaborate in order to improve the performance of first entering BSc students.

Advisory framework to inform the development of a micro-curriculum for a new bachelor of nursing degree programme offered at a University of the Western Cape

van der Berg, Lindy Sheryldene January 2021 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Curriculum review can ensure that nurses develop appropriate competencies to respond to market demand. Regular revision and updating of curricula are in line with recommendations of the WHO to scale-up health professionals' education and training. Introducing transformative changes in education provides an opportunity to review the strengths and weaknesses of the current systems. The nursing profession was the first of the health professions in South Africa to transform its legislative framework, which led to the development of new qualifications.

Exploring the impact of economic and social factors on stock market performance

Hallberg, Vincent January 2023 (has links)
This study seeks to investigate the relationship between human development factors and domestic stock markets using a multiple linear regression model. Despite efforts to improve the model's explanatory power, the findings indicate that the model fails to confirm the research question. Nevertheless, the model uncovers a discernible trend in the dataset, albeit with limited explanatory capacity. These results highlight the complexity of the interplay between human development factors and domestic stock markets and suggest the need for further research and alternative modeling approaches to deepen the understanding of this relationship.

Implementation and evaluation of a secure communication solution for drones in a ROS2 network application / Implementation och utvärdering utav en säker kommunikationslösning för drönare i en ROS2-nätverksapplikation

Buljubasic, Ajdin January 2023 (has links)
In recent time, drones are everywhere. While commercial drones have shown great potential for hobby enthusiasts, it has shown a greater potential in military use and safeguarding. Currently, a significant amount of drones are being used for malicious means, such as espionage and warfare. Because of this, these drones has to be combated. One way to combat them is to use countermeasure drones. In this thesis, the objective is to implement and evaluate the security capabilities of SROS2 in a simulated environment. The thesis goal is to create a simulated environment along with two “ally” drones with secure communication and one “enemy” drone that will try to eavesdrop on their communication. Completing the thesis work was done by configuring a drone network using ROS2’s subscriber-publisher model and the use of evaluating methods such as Wireshark, tcpdump, and overhead performance tests to better understand and form a clearer picture of the inner-workings of the security capabilities offered by SROS2. The result yielded a simulated environment with three drones, where the “ally” drones successfully communicated with each other and the “enemy” drone failed in eavesdropping on the data travelling between them. SROS2’s security offered security but also showcased a decrease in latency and throughput performance, compared to a non-configured SROS2 network.

Discovering patterns of interaction with feedback : an eye tracker study

Bystam, Carin, Moliteus, Maria January 2022 (has links)
Feedback plays a vital role in learning. With online learning on the rise, feedback can be given directly to each student in a way that can not be achieved in a traditional classroom with one teacher. But while the importance of feedback is well-known, little is known about how students interact with feedback. This study was conducted to find out how students interact with feedback from a question-based learning platform in terms of their eye movement patterns. Using an eye tracker and a multiple choice quiz, data of gaze duration in each quiz segment and gaze transactions in between segments was extracted and analyzed. The results show that students fall into three groups: 1) those who spend most time on feedback and less on the question, 2) those who spend most time on questions and less on the feedback 3) those who use a mixed approach. Students in group 1) and 3) had few gaze transactions between the questions and feedback, indicating that the feedback was used as intended. Having discovered the presence of distinct patterns of feedback interaction, the next steps will be to investigate how these impact the use and utility of the feedback by students.

The Relationship of Education, Years of Experience, and School Nursing Practice to the Importance of School Nursing Knowledge

Cruise, Erin Gooding 06 December 2013 (has links)
Problem: Because of the complex nature and autonomy of school nursing practice, multiple professional organizations recommend a Bachelor of Science in Nursing as the minimum level of education for entry into this specialty. Despite research demonstrating benefits to patients and nurses with this level of education, school nurses across the U.S. vary widely in their educational and experiential preparation for this critical role. Benner's Novice-to-Expert Framework emphasizes the importance of experience in nursing or in a specialty practice to developing the skill needed to provide expert nursing care. This study investigated what knowledge school nurses considered important to competent practice when responding to the National Board for Certification of School Nurses 2007 Role Delineation Survey and whether there are differences in how school nurses responded to these questions based on their educational and experiential backgrounds. Methods: This was a quantitative, non-experimental exploratory study involving secondary analysis of the survey data. Demographics were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Non-parametric statistical procedures (Fisher's Exact Test) were used to see if the 399 subjects' answers to 32 knowledge questions on the survey differed based on education level, years of general nursing experience, and years of school nursing experience. Results: Most subjects indicated that 27 of the 32 knowledge areas were moderately or extremely important for competent school nursing practice. Results of Fisher's Exact Test indicated differences on two items based on the education level of the respondents and differences on two items based on years of experience in school nursing, but no significant differences were found based on years of overall nursing experience. Communication skills in counseling had a significant difference based on both education level and years of school nursing experience; but it was impossible to tell which was more significant. Conclusions: This study contributes to the body of knowledge about school nursing and what this sample of school nurses perceived as important knowledge for competent practice. However, this analysis of differences in answers given to the survey knowledge questions does not settle the debate of whether there are differences in nurse perceptions based on education level or experience. / Ph.

Kottorp, Anton, Sjöstedt, Filip January 2024 (has links)
