Diagramática: descrição e criação das formas na arquitetura seriada de Peter Eisenman / Diagrammatic : description and creation of forms in architecture serial of Peter Eisenman

Gabriela Izar 15 May 2015 (has links)
This research examines the role of the diagram in the series of houses designed by American architect, Peter Eisenman, and underlines the formal basis of his design work. The hypothesis is that his diagrams are a priori, meaning they precede any issues in the program, and that his diagrammatic work creates a context that makes the projects objects in a network of relationships of forms and meanings. From the early 1960s, the diagram became the key to his theoretical thinking, which has, as its basic problem, the myth of an autonomous architecture, formulated on the border between the disciplines of semiotics, phenomenology, cognition, and philosophy. On this border, the diagram takes an operative part in the idea of a conceptual architecture that does not simply affirm itself by the presence of the building but fundamentally by logical relationships that form the basis of a formalistic approach to architecture. The first chapter presents the main meanings a diagram assumes in different areas of knowledge and seeks to highlight Eisenman\'s contribution to the investigation into the operative role of the concept in an architectural project. This chapter is followed by the contextualization of Eisenman\'s theoretical agenda, from its insertion into the English cultural environment, when he assimilates the analytical approach of his mentor, Colin Rowe, then to formulate his first critique of functionalism. As a counterpoint to the idea that Eisenman addresses diagrams as a formal a priori principle, the concepts of the diagram and form in the doctorate thesis by Christopher Alexander are examined, a text in which he advocates a mechanistic view of the diagram as an extensive design solution. From these contexts, an examination is developed, about the role of diagrams in historical readings that Eisenman uses in his formal analysis of modernist works, and in the works by the Italian architect, Giuseppe Terragni. Assuming as a premise that his analytical work already starts with the construction of critical texts, the fifth and sixth chapter highlight the formal basis of the diagrams in Eisenman\'s text, and the transposition of these basis for his houses studies, which he gathers together as a series of numbered objects, from 1 to 11 A. Based on a archival survey, on the classification of a large volume of project records and writings about these works, the chapter eighth describes the prehistory of Peter Eisenman\'s design experiment: the diagram\'s references and articulations extensive to the whole series. In conclusion, the author\'s texts, written during and after the house projects, are returned to in order to identify Eisenman\'s decision to base his ideas on concepts from linguistics and philosophy, rather than on an explanation of the diagram as the formal and conceptual key, with which he read and constructed architecture. After noting that Eisenman\'s diagram is a device of language that allows him to discuss the rules of architectural representation and the conventions of discourse on how to exercise it within a project, it is considered that his work with diagrams develops in the perspective of an autonomous mode of knowledge, based on formal rationality.

This dissertation is dedicated to understanding the relations between the social comments about the media and the development of the current journalism. It starts with the idea that the circulation of comments in the society, especially through the internet, with a critical component in relation to the products of journalism may be causing tension and changes of practices in the newsrooms. The possibility in question is that comments have the potential to generate a new way of thinking about practices used in the mass media. The aim is to understand how the comments are received, selected and moved through the newsrooms of Brazilian newspapers, and finally which affectations they generate in the development of the news. The current analysis is based on the discussion of the changes in the society and communication particularly since the internet popularization. This observation rethinks the reader position in this context discussing its role as a passive receiver and as a reader who assesses and produces along with the media. A discussion about the possibilities of this relation and the results of what José Luiz Braga (2006) calls Social Response System is created in order to observe the critical work undertaken by these people. The discussion is enhanced by the observations taken through exploratory researches performed in the newspapers O Globo, in October 2013, Correio Braziliense, in November 2013, Folha de São Paulo, in October 2014, and Zero Hora, in November 2014. Editors were interviewed in the newsrooms and the routines of interaction between the social comments and the newspapers were observed. At this moment, it is postulated that the contact has generated affectations in the journalistic practices which come from the conscience of having a more alert society. From a theorerical point of view, we believe this moment may generate another way of thinking about the theories involving the elements that act in the construction of the news. In this context, the research looks for a theoretical basis which outlines the social criticism flows in the newsrooms, its limitations and potentialities.

Retratos de tradutores de James Joyce como agentes da tradução literária no Brasil: um estudo de caso / Portraits of James Joyce translators as agents of literary translation in Brazil: a case study

Quirino, Maria Teresa 06 December 2012 (has links)
By building a case study of Brazilian translations of four works in prose by James Joyce this study describes the role and social history of Brazilian translators as agents of cultural innovation through their translations, theories and production in the Brazilian literary field. The thesis stresses the role of individual translators of Joyces works who have played a key role in the introduction and assimilation of canonical Western literature in Brazil and are also responsible for including the country at the center of modern culture. In my case study, the hypothesis is that the translators choice of translating Joyces works, and the translations produced in Brazil from 1945 until the time of this thesis have helped make possible an eclectic but also a very characteristic Brazilian theory of translation, and that it has been possible to be built from the work of these agents.

The impact of state-mandated standard-based

Denny, III, Davis McCall 15 May 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the high-stakes standardized test movement in Texas secondary schools. The method to accomplish this task was to compare the perceptions between Texas secondary school administrators and supporters, critics, and researchers of high-stakes testing. Out of 400 potential respondents randomly selected from 2005-2006 membership list of Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, 178 administrators participated in an electronic survey to rate the extent to which 31 statements derived from supporters, critics, and the unintended consequences of high-stakes testing as reported by researchers in current literature. Means, standard deviations, and frequencies were used to make assumptions about perceptions of secondary administrators. Independent t-tests were conducted to test for possible perception differences between groups identified in the study. Independent groups examined in this study included: Gender (Male and Female), Years of Administrative Experience (1-4 years vs. 15 or More Years), Campus Classification (Large vs. Small), and Current Campus Rating (Exemplary and Recognized vs. Academically Acceptable). Using an alpha level of .05 to establish significance, t-tests suggest that significant differences exist between large and small school administrators on statements 5 and 7. Further, significant differences exist between male and female administrators on statements 4 and 5. The findings of this study seem to suggest that Texas secondary principals strongly support the following statements: 1. No high-stakes decision such as grade retention or graduation should be based on the results of a single test. 2. Educators are making use of student performance data generated by highstakes tests to help them refine programs, channel funding, and identify roots of success. 3. High-stakes tests have helped focus public attention on schools with lowachieving students. 4. The public display of high-stakes test scores motivates administrators. 5. High-stakes testing has resulted in a loss of local control of curricula. 6. The implementation of high-stakes testing has been a catalyst for increased attention to students with special needs. 7. Doing poorly on high-stakes tests does not lead to increased student effort to learn.

Musical Missteps: The Severity of the Sophomore Slump in the Music Industry

Zackery, Shane M. 17 May 2014 (has links)
This study looks at alternative models of follow-up album success in order to determine if there is a relationship between the decrease in Metascore ratings (assigned by Metacritic.com) between the first and second album for a musician or band and the 1) music genre or 2) the number of years between the first and second album release. The results support the dominant thought, which suggests that neither belonging to a certain genre of music nor waiting more or less time to drop the second album makes an artist more susceptible to the Sophomore Slump. This finding is important because it forces us to identify other potential causes for the observed disappointing performance of a generally favorable musician’s second album.

Marinello, Adiane Fogali 07 July 2005 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-05T19:29:55Z No. of bitstreams: 1 DISSERTACAO Adiane F Marinello.PDF: 2047407 bytes, checksum: 58c096147573d974b4add8ff57464d13 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-05T19:29:55Z (GMT). Having published only one literary work, the author had nevertheless intense cultural and political activity in the first half of twentieth century. Besides creating and supervising periodicals at Livraria e Editora Globo, in Porto Alegre, he served in both the federal and the Rio Grande do Sul state governments, having achieved the position of Chairman of the Brazilian Mint (Casa da Moeda) during President Getúlio Vargas administration. This study attemps to demonstrate that Bernardi tried to make the culture of Rio Grande do Sul known and made considerable efforts to divulge the creed of Catholicism in Brazilian society, therefore placing religion as a main source for his literary and political project. This Dissertation constitutes an interdisciplinary approach that reports the findings of research involving Literature, History and Sociology, while focusing regional culture.

Investigating Kracauerian cinematic realism through film practice and criticism: Life-world series (2017) and selected films of Lino Brocka

Gutierrez III, Jose 27 August 2018 (has links)
This dissertation is an investigation on the realist film theory of Siegfried Kracauer. It was principally conducted through film practice as exemplified by the ten short films that compose the omnibus film project, Life-world Series (dir. Joni Gutierrez, 2017, 118 minutes). To supplement the study's examination of Kracauerian cinematic realism (KCR), film criticism of selected works of Lino Brocka was also accomplished. The methodology involved three components: (1) research-based production of Life-world Series; (2) textual analyses of the said film collection and selected Brocka films; and (3) meta-analysis of the scholarly criticism on the Brocka film. This dissertation is the first to use film-making practice which was a part of the research project and devised to investigate KCR, which avows that the cinematic experience of physical reality as an object of contemplation fosters an intuitive understanding of the Lebenswelt (life-world) and, in turn, brings about the redemptive potential of film vis-à-vis the modern condition. The emergent design of Life-world Series opened the study to a wide range of possibilities that it could not have encountered if it limited itself to applying a particular theory as a framework in doing film criticism of pre-existing works. This project - through both its film practice and criticism components - is an interweaving of key notions from Husserlian phenomenology and the seven KCR tropes identified in the study, namely: (1) the quotidian; (2) the transient; (3) the refuse; (4) the fortuitous; (5) the indeterminate; (6) the flow of life; and (7) the spiritual life itself. The phenomenological engagement of this investigation has provided opportunities for expanding the inventory of KCR tropes, to conceivably include characteristics of the Lebenswelt which form part of the project's overall findings; that is, the life-world as: (1) expansive; (2) multi-layered; (3) flowing; (4) in the process of becoming; (5) resonantly intersubjective; (6) a thing of beauty; (7) relating to essences; (8) cyclical; (9) transcendent; (10) meaning-laden; (11) fragmented; and (12) malleable. The dissertation explicates how its phenomenological approach in inspecting KCR led to the construction of a prospective model of cinematic realism - the integrated quadrant model of Kracauerian cinematic realism (IQMKCR) - and finally, determines the implications and prospects of using film practice as an instrument in interrogating KCR.

Artist as subject : subject as object

Cruise, Wilma 09 1900 (has links)
The artist uses herself as the object of study. Her subjective position is validated within a theoretical framework provided by feminism, existentialism and Freudian theory. The three world views provide the context for an analysis of sculpture produced between the years 1988 and 1997. Three one-person exhibitions held in 1990, 1993 and 1996, are examined in terms of their iconographic emphasis and their theoretical bias. The role of the unconscious in the genesis of the sculptures and the problem of author/reader dichotomies in interpretation are dealt with as thematic threads throughout the dissertation. / Department of History of Art and Fine Arts / M.A. (Fine Arts)

Considering the passage from the play text to the film as a process of "intersemiotic translation" (following Roman Jakobson), or "transcreation" (as established by Haroldo de Campos), we propose an approximation to Hirszman's creative thought, artist witch, as Guarnieri, has marked the Brazilian political and cultural scenario for the past decades.
