The Emergence of Regional Cultures and Practices: A Comparative Study of Canadian Software Entrepreneurship

Spigel, Benjamin 14 January 2014 (has links)
Despite the ‘cultural turn’ in economic geography, the discipline has yet to conclusively describe the processes through which culture influences actors’ daily economic and social practices. Without a better understanding of the role of culture, it is difficult to explain the emergence and influence of the heterogeneous landscapes of regional business culture we readily observe. This problem is particularly acute in the study of entrepreneurial environments, where regional culture is theorized to play an important role in the local entrepreneurship process. This dissertation proposes an alternative approach to culture which draws on the work of Pierre Bourdieu to reveal the underlying social processes connecting culture with entrepreneurial action. Through qualitative case studies of software entrepreneurs in three Canadian cities — Kitchener- Waterloo, Ontario; Ottawa, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta — this dissertation examines the emergence and evolution of regional cultures and how they have helped to create distinct contexts which encourage unique forms of entrepreneurial practices, outlooks and strategies. This new perspective allows for a more detailed and dynamic analysis of regional cultures and provides new tools for researchers and policy makers to understand the role of cultures within regional economic development.

THE CULTURAL DISCONTINUITY HYPOTHESIS: AN APPALACHIAN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE IN EASTERN KENTUCKY

Conner, Timothy W., II 01 January 2013 (has links)
K.M. Tyler et al. (2008) propose a quantitative method to measure differences between school and home experiences had by students of ethnic minority status and how such differences (cultural discontinuity) may affect psychological factors related to student achievement. Although study of cultural discontinuity has been applied to understanding African American, Asian American, Latino American, and Native American student populations, little attention has been given to the ways in which cultural discontinuity may manifest in the Appalachian American population. This study conceptualizes the socio-cultural conditions that would warrant such an investigation, establishing evidence from ten interview subjects of the presence of cultural values associated with Appalachian Americans from Eastern Kentucky. The interviewee evidence provides a necessary starting point for investigating regional culture and marginalization effects that may occur based on membership within the Appalachian American community.

Salvador

This region s social and musical practices evoke reflections on the social memory, history, identity and tradition related to cultural phenomena such as native music festivals and the identity-cultural processes in the state. The guitarist style, which Yanel carries, is presented through reflections on the musical characteristics of this guitar, which is sometimes called Pampeano, from the analysis of a musical interpretation of the guitarist. Considering the production and work of this artist, some discussions have been raised from the reports of other guitarists about the possible formation of a guitar school connectedto the music of the Pampas in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Through oral history, documental research and musical analysis, part of the life story of Lúcio Yanel acquires a new registration in this research that aims to contribute to discussion and analysis of socio-musical practices in Rio Grande do Sul, especially those connected to pampeanomusic and regional guitar / O presente estudo visa inicialmente, registrar e analisar parte da história de vida do violonista argentino Lúcio Yanel (1946), bem como sua produção artística nas últimas três décadas no Rio Grande doSul.

Adriana Moreno Rangel 29 February 2012 (has links)
This paper discusses Roraima`s culture and identity and some developments from the hybridization process represented in the art work of the artist, Jorge Augusto Cardoso. For this purpose, we used theoretical and methodological foundations from Cultural Studies to cover Culture, Identity, Visual Language, Regional Art, Regionalism, Regionality, Hybridization and Representation in order to analyze the process of identity formation of Roraima, and to understand its elements involved in this process, which allowed us to view the forms of "being" Roraima, revealed in the artist imagery scenery, riddled by conflicts and differences. In this light, various forms of symbolic representations valued in the region, created by artist, were studied, and new concepts were extracted at the same time generating new readings. Thus, this analysis gives possibilities of identity developed in the system of representation contained in the work, in which spaces were designed and built, enabling subjects to position themselves and to build new identities; to appropriate and to reconstruct identities for their use.

Приемы и принципы проектирования прибрежных парков в Китае на примере парка Биньхай в Харбине : магистерская диссертация / Methods and principles of designing coastal parks in China on the example of Binhai Park in Harbin

Sun, W. January 2023 (has links)
The globalization processes that have engulfed the world contribute to the complete erasure of “borders” between cities, countries, cultures, and ethnic groups. However, against the backdrop of a cosmopolitan metropolis, people's need for spiritual culture has not decreased, and they are increasingly striving to live in a unique city. At present, humanity is coming to realize the value of individual cultures that have retained their originality. Whether the urban landscape is distinctive or not, parks in every city in the world play a special role that cannot be ignored. Parks are not only works of landscape and architectural art in the city, but also an important platform for meeting the spiritual and cultural needs of the population, as well as a form of expression of the unique national and regional architecture of the region. Harbin has formed a unique regional culture in the process of urban development. On the one hand, it includes the natural and regional features of Harbin, and on the other hand, the historical and cultural regional features, which were influenced by political, cultural and other factors of the historical process of urban development. Harbin's waterfront landscape should embody rich form changes using regional culture. Only the city waterfront project, combined with regional culture, can inherit the historical meaning of the city and show the traditional culture of the city and China as a whole. The thesis researches and analyzes the actual analogues of the world's coastal parks, generalizes the combination of regional culture and landscape technologies on the waterfront in order to express the features of the regional culture of the northeast region of China. An analysis of the history of regional culture and architecture in Harbin provided the basis for the Harbin Coastal Park project. The thesis reveals the principles and methods of the traditional Chinese natural landscape and the regional culture of Harbin. The idea of the thematic concept of the embankment project was developed, taking into account the influence of the multicultural traditions of China on the architectural and planning solution of the modern coastal park and using the original design of green spaces of centuries-old landscape Chinese art. After analyzing the wishes of citizens of different age groups, a functional scheme of the park was developed. The project takes into account the requirements of environmentalists to protect the environment and preserve untouched green areas. The park project on the Songhua River is an ennobled area with a beautifully preserved landscape. After the implementation of the project, the park will become a place of attraction for citizens and tourists, a hallmark of Harbin.

Caracterização do leite utilizado para a produção de queijo artesanal serrano no município de Cambará do Sul.

Pereira, Bianca Pinto January 2012 (has links)
The Colonial Serrano cheese is a regional product linked with history of colonization in Campos de Cima da Serra. It is processed with milk from mixed race beef cattle and is an important source of income. Because of this cheese is handmade and milk does not suffer any thermal treatment, such as pasteurization, it must be produced under stricts standards of cows hygiene and health. This research aimed to investigate two Serrano Cheese producers at Cambará do Sul, RS. The farms were chosen for convenience and were followed by 12 months, between March 2010 and February 2011. Milk samples were monthly sampled and evaluated for their chemical composition, somatic cell count, total bacterial count, titritable acidity (Dornic), ethanol stability and Whiteside test. It was observed that milk composition did not vary statistically throughout the study period. The somatic cell count (SCC) ranged from 6.0 x103 to 3.9 x 105 céls.mL-1 and total bacterial count (CBT) from 1.1 x 104 to 7.57 x 106 UFC.mL-1. The acidity was within the expected parameters in most samples, and i only in December 2010, at one of the properties, the milk had high acidity (18.38 ° D). Ethanol stability showed values of 76.17 ± 1.19 and 75.50 ± 1.16, respectively in the properties 1 and 2. Within months, more specifically in the summer and early fall, there were identified the unstable milk samples at ethanol at 72 ° GL, indicating the occurrence of unstable milk, not acid. In Whiteside test, two samples of the milk produced on the property two were positive, however no increase in CCS, but CBT. Milk, over the period studied showed variations in somatic cell count and total bacterial that may indicate deficiency in obtaining hygiene and insufficient udder health. Given that milk is used immediately after milking, producers should be encouraged to obtain procedures to ensure hygienic milk and milking better management to ensure that the milk produced is suitable for production Serrano cheese.

Les manifestations taurines populaires en Camargue et leurs publics : un champ social entre équilibre et tension / Popular taurine events in Camargue and their audiences : social perspectives and controversy

Marchis Mouren, Laure 24 November 2017 (has links)
Can a two-century old local tradition survive the globalization of leisure and recreation? When it comes to bull racing, studying the audience/spectators is important. Extensive bull-breeding, which is one of the main industries in Camargue, is not really profitable and cannot survive by breeding bulls for racing alone. The common assumption is that the spectators of Camargue bull races tend to be rather old rural folks. If this is really the case, the future of bull racing and the ecological balance of the territory depend on audience renewal of taurine culture. Little known outside Provence and Languedoc, taurine events remain quite popular in Camargue and surrounding areas. Why is the interest of locals for these so-called “traditions” so keen? As we started interviewing aficionados for this research we were able to outline a social field (Bourdieu, 1992) for Camargue bull racing. This thesis, pertaining to Information and Communication sciences, focuses on the field of Camargue bull racing. This field is fairly autonomous, yet relies on the social, economic and political context. It belongs to a universe of conflicting interests and power struggles between social actors. A quantitative survey compiled from 626 questionnaires provides a first outline of the audiences of Camargue bull racing. Several transmission mechanisms have been identified. Intergenerational transmission is complemented by an integration mechanism that transcends the field’s borders. Aficionados act as mediators for first-time spectators and the feeling of belonging to the “bouvine” community strengthens the field.
