Perceived Residential Environment Quality in Relation to Gender; An Exploratory Study in Lindängen, MalmöShams, Elahe January 2020 (has links)
This master’s thesis deals with some concepts and theories related to public space and everyday life and points to how neglecting women’s needs and preferences in public spaces can lead to the formation of gendered urban spaces which prevent women from earning their right to the city. Concepts such as quality of life, quality of place, living environment, residential perception and satisfaction, and place attachment overlap and have many interrelations. One cannot consider, for example, the quality of residential environment independent of residential satisfaction or ignore its influence on the quality of life. This study focuses specifically on the perception of residential environment quality, in the medium scale (neighborhood). Despite a wide range of studies in the field of perceived residential environment quality, the review of literature reveals that studies in this field lack sufficient attention to power relations which among others (cultural, ethnic, etc.), can be gender related. Given the mentioned issues, this study explores women’s perceptions of residential environment quality in the Lindängen neighborhood in Malmö, Sweden. Drawing upon the analysis of a questionnaire, the study presents four scales of REQ in which women’s perceptions have been different from men’s: Recreational services, Safety, Public furniture and Commercial services. In the next stage, a set of semi-structured interviews were done with five women living in the neighborhood. These interviews explore the way women’s ideas and perceptions about their neighborhood, more specifically about the four aforementioned scales, affect their daily lives. The findings of this study highlight the influence of the residential environment quality on everyday lives of women and indicates their different needs for urban facilities and infrastructures (such as recreational or commercial services, as this study indicates) as compared to men.

Nyckelord: Dagligt liv, endometrios, erfarenhet, inverkan, kvinnors hälsa, upplevelse, vardagligt liv. / Background: Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory and gynecological disease inwhich about one in ten women of childbearing age suffer. Lack of knowledge in healthcare results in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Common symptoms of endometriosisare pain, fatigue and bleeding.Aim: The aim of this study was to illustrate women’s experiences regarding the impactof endometriosis upon their everyday lives.Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach. Through database searches in CINAHL and PubMed, twelve qualitative, scientific articles were identified and quality-controlled with a template for quality review of studies with qualitative research methodology - patient experiences designed by the Swedish National Board for Medicaland Social Evaluation. The articles were analyzed with content analysis.Result: Women with endometriosis experienced negative impact of the disease:endometriosis affected several aspects of women's everyday lives and the analysisresulted in six themes: functional ability; emotional maturity; social life; intimaterelationships; work, education and economics; self-image and life-management. Twosubthemes were also identified. Conclusion: Support, understanding and confirmation of symptoms are important forwomen in order to cope with the disease in their everyday lives. However, women withendometriosis experience ignorance and normalization of menstrual pain in both societyand in healthcare which leads to alienation which can lead to social isolation. Increasedknowledge about endometriosis is needed in both healthcare and society in general, inorder for women to experience a broader acceptance of their illness and to be met byunderstanding rather than mistrust. Highlighting women’s experiences regarding theimpact of endometriosis upon their everyday lives leads to increased understandingwhich to the nurse is crucial information in order to guarantee a person-centered andsafe healthcare. The nurse can collaborate with other professions in healthcare andprovide information, support and confirmation to these women, which can reduce theirsuffering and risk of social isolation. Keywords: Daily life, endometriosis, everyday life, experience, impact, perception, women’s health.

Investigating the Self-tracking Use for Mental Wellness of New ParentsEunkyung Jo (6633707) 15 May 2019 (has links)
<p>New parents often experience significant stress as they take
on new roles and responsibilities. Personal informatics practices have increasingly gained
attention as they support various aspects of wellness of individuals by
providing data-driven self-insights. While several PI systems have been
proposed to support mental wellness of individuals not only by providing
self-knowledge but also by helping individuals deal with negative emotions, few
studies investigated how parenting stress can be managed through PI practices. In
this paper, I set out to investigate how new parents make use of flexible
self-tracking practices in the context of stress management. The findings of
this study indicate that flexible self-tracking practices enable individuals to
develop self-knowledge as well as to better communicate with their spouses through
data. Based on the findings, I discuss how the self-tracking experiences for the
mental wellness of parents can be better designed and provide some
considerations for future research and design for parenting stress management.</p>

”Who has the time to discuss gender equality in that chaos?” : - Mothers perspectives about gender equality when having a child with special needsLock, Sara-Lina January 2020 (has links)
This thesis aimed to explore mothers experiences of having a child with special needs througha gender equality perspective. Four mothers were interviewed through a semi-structured interview guide. Feminist disability studies and emotional labor with an intersectional perspective have been the guiding framework. To analyse the empirical material I have used aqualitative thematic analysis. Research has shown that heterosexual couples with children in Sweden are becoming more equal in terms of the unpaid” invisible” household chores. However, parents who has children with disabilities and in need for more extensive care tend to take on more traditional roles. The findings have shown that mothers are more often the one who takes care of the necessary chores concerning the child’s disability. At the same time, she also needs to take a step back in her career or not able to have work outside the home. For some of the families, the necessary chores have been divided into administrative or practical tasks were one parent has done more than the other. To get a deeper knowledge about why it was that certain gender division I have found that the deep emotional connection to their child had an intersectional effect in the decision to stay home for these mothers.

“These Days, when a Belgrader Asked: ‘How Are You Doing?’, the Answer Is: ‘I’m Waiting’.” Everyday Life During the 1999 NATO BombingSatjukow, Elisa 24 November 2020 (has links)
On the evening of the 24th of March, 1999, the first air strikes hit multiple targets in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The “Operation Allied Force” had begun. The air raids lasted for 78 days. The Milošević regime used the “state of exception” (Agamben 2004) to further and deepen its own propagandistic imperatives
of national unity and to advertise the necessity of the “war of defence” within
the nation. The state started to offer a wide range of events that not only entertained its citizens but also created forums for them to meet and to “unite” against the enemy. Beyond the state-prescribed cultural events, numerous efforts sprang up throughout the city to maintain a social and cultural life. This paper will tell of the diverse ways in which the people of Belgrade spent their time between and during the air raids.

The local turn in peacebuilding : a critical analysis of peacebuilding strategies in South SudanLiaga, Emmaculate Asige January 2019 (has links)
This research seeks to study the peacebuilding strategies used in South Sudan. It is interested in the interaction between the liberal peacebuilding framework and the “local turn” as manifested in the strategy adopted by peacebuilding organisations in Africa. The local turn and local ownership only enjoy rhetorical acceptance and prove to be challenging to operationalise. This research critically analyses the ideological policies and implementation impact of strategies used, especially relating to the inclusion as well as the exclusion of “the local”.
As local ownership in peace processes is essential in ensuring sustainability, the research is interested in the position that the “local” voices and “local” peace actors occupy in post-independence peace strategies and policies employed mainly through the liberal framework in South Sudan. It is in the light of the top-down liberal peacebuilding framework that this research provides an analysis of the bottom-up strategies that can be identified in the case of South Sudan. The research will thus identify types of discourses, beliefs, practices and ideologies that have been adopted in South Sudan’s peacebuilding interventions by both the local and external actors and their implications. Using the different strategies employed by the external and internal peace actors as a unit of analysis, the research will aim to find out how the peace strategies employed in South Sudan include “the local” approach, how local and external actors interact and the implications of this relationship for peace in South Sudan.
This research employs a critical theory approach to analyse the inclusion of “the local” in peacebuilding and the existing relationship between the liberal peacebuilding framework and the local turn. This will be done using a qualitative approach and a phenomenological design. Since the current strategies do not exist in a vacuum, historical process tracing will be conducted to understand and evaluate the effect and the change of strategies employed by external and internal actors in the past and possible current implications. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Political Sciences / PhD / Unrestricted

Prediction of Cognitive Sequelae and Ecological Validity in Critically-Ill Adult PatientsWoon, Fu Lye 01 June 2010 (has links)
Survivors of critical illness have a high prevalence of long-term cognitive and psychiatric morbidity and poor quality of life years after hospital discharge. Data are lacking regarding whether cognitive screening tests predict which critically ill patients may be at risk to develop long-term cognitive sequelae and whether cognitive sequelae predict the patients everyday functioning. This study sought to determine whether cognitive screening tests, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Mini-Cog, predict long-term cognitive sequelae and everyday functioning in survivors of critical illness 6-month post-hospital discharge. A second purpose was to investigate whether cognitive sequelae are associated with poor everyday functioning in critically ill survivors. Finally, the relationship between cognitive sequelae and quality of life was assessed. Survivors of critical illness had a high rate of cognitive impairments at hospital discharge, as well as long-term cognitive and psychiatric sequelae, deficits in everyday functioning, and reduced quality of life at 6-month follow-up. The MMSE and Mini- Cog did not predict long-term cognitive sequelae or everyday functioning at 6-months. Cognitive sequelae were not associated with poor everyday functioning; however, impaired attention, memory, and mental processing speed predicted problems with managing home/transportation, and impaired attention predicted problems in health and safety, social adjustment, and memory/orientation. Cognitive sequelae were associated with reduced quality of life in the role physical domain. Altogether, these findings lend additional knowledge to the literature regarding cognitive and psychiatric sequelae, everyday functioning, and reduced quality of life in critically ill patients, and may have clinical implications for the critical care providers, patients, and caregivers. Given the large population of survivors of critical illness each year, strategies aimed at recognizing, preventing and treating these morbidities are important research and public health concerns. Investigations into the clinical and economic burden of these morbidities and methods to mitigate them, including patient screening and referral to appropriate mental health and rehabilitation services, are warranted.

Livet efter stroke : En kvalitativ litteraturöversiktSörin, Emilia, Thelander, Annie January 2020 (has links)
Background: Stroke is a term for two acute states of diseases: cerebral haemorrhage and cerebral infarction. Stroke is a common disease and the risk of having a stroke increases with bad living habits and age. Time is a crucial factor when it comes to the treatment of stroke and to reduce the consequences of stroke. For a nurse it is important to understand difficulties that arise after stroke. Aim: To describe experiences in everyday life of adults affected by stroke. Method: A literature review performed with an inductive approach consisting of thirteen qualitative articles that have been analysed according to Friberg’s analysis description in five steps. Result: The end result showed that experiences exist in different dimensions: physical, mental, social and existential. These dimensions are closely connected and affect everyday life for adults affected by stroke. Conclusion: Everyday life and self-care are dramatically affected when the person is affected by stroke. As a nurse, it is fundamental to have a holistic view of the affected person in order to create an understanding of post-stroke experiences and to enable a good and effective care.
