Hamlet haven [electronic resource] : an online, annotated bibliography / by Harmonie Anne Haag Loberg.

Loberg, Harmonie Anne Haag. January 2002 (has links)
Winner of the 2003 Outstanding Thesis prize. / Title from PDF of title page. / Document formatted into pages; / Thesis (M.A.)--University of South Florida, 2002. / Includes bibliographical references. / Text (Electronic thesis) in PDF format. / ABSTRACT: The Challenge: Today a daunting quantity of scholarship relating to Hamlet exists. While databases and electronic catalogues aid research, these directories present a virtual wall of minimal bibliographic data. Sorting through lists still takes eons. Meanwhile, new publications are constantly added to the academic stacks that ever threaten to tumble over. The Solution: A web site that groups together scholarly publications using similar approaches and treating similar subjects will translate the overwhelming into the maneuverable. The online medium will provide accessibility to everyone--student, research assistant, instructor, scholar--and will guarantee the opportunity to update this resource on a regular basis. Scope: Listings will span materials published between 1991and 2001. The bibliography will exclude notes, reviews, abstracts, and treatments of theatre and film performances as well as certain forums (e.g., newsletters, bulletins, electronic journals). / ABSTRACT: Scholarship focusing on the Folio/Quartos debate seems relevant but requires specific and technical specialization and will thus be omitted. Pedagogical studies and comparisons of Hamlet to other literary works will also be excluded. Research: IAC Expanded Academic Index, 1982-1995, IAC Expanded Academic Index, 1996-, and MLA Bibliography databases, as well as Dr. Sara Deats?private bibliography on Hamlet, will be combed for applicable scholarship. Organization: The bibliography will categorize publications by theoretical approach (e.g., feminism, new historicism) and subject focus (e.g., characters, themes). It will arrange individual works alphabetically by author within each subsection, using the MLA format. / System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader. / Mode of access: World Wide Web.

High Dynamic Range Panoramic Imaging with Scene Motion

Silk, Simon 17 November 2011 (has links)
Real-world radiance values can range over eight orders of magnitude from starlight to direct sunlight but few digital cameras capture more than three orders in a single Low Dynamic Range (LDR) image. We approach this problem using established High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques in which multiple images are captured with different exposure times so that all portions of the scene are correctly exposed at least once. These images are then combined to create an HDR image capturing the full range of the scene. HDR capture introduces new challenges; movement in the scene creates faded copies of moving objects, referred to as ghosts. Many techniques have been introduced to handle ghosting, but typically they either address specific types of ghosting, or are computationally very expensive. We address ghosting by first detecting moving objects, then reducing their contribution to the final composite on a frame-by-frame basis. The detection of motion is addressed by performing change detection on exposure-normalized images. Additional special cases are developed based on a priori knowledge of the changing exposures; for example, if exposure is increasing every shot, then any decrease in intensity in the LDR images is a strong indicator of motion. Recent Superpixel over-segmentation techniques are used to refine the detection. We also propose a novel solution for areas that see motion throughout the capture, such as foliage blowing in the wind. Such areas are detected as always moving, and are replaced with information from a single input image, and the replacement of corrupted regions can be tailored to the scenario. We present our approach in the context of a panoramic tele-presence system. Tele-presence systems allow a user to experience a remote environment, aiming to create a realistic sense of "being there" and such a system should therefore provide a high quality visual rendition of the environment. Furthermore, panoramas, by virtue of capturing a greater proportion of a real-world scene, are often exposed to a greater dynamic range than standard photographs. Both facets of this system therefore stand to benefit from HDR imaging techniques. We demonstrate the success of our approach on multiple challenging ghosting scenarios, and compare our results with state-of-the-art methods previously proposed. We also demonstrate computational savings over these methods.

Strings, Branes and Non-trivial Space-times

Björnsson, Jonas January 2008 (has links)
This thesis deals with different aspects of string and /p/-brane theories. One of the motivations for string theory is to unify the forces in nature and produce a quantum theory of gravity. /p/-branes and related objects arise in string theory and are related to a non-perturbative definition of the theory. The results of this thesis might help in understanding string theory better. The first part of the thesis introduces and discusses relevant topics for the second part of the thesis which consists of five papers. In the three first papers we develop and treat a perturbative approach to relativistic /p/-branes around stretched geometries. The unperturbed theory is described by a string- or particle-like theory. The theory is solved, within perturbation theory, by constructing successive canonical transformations which map the theory to the unperturbed one order by order. The result is used to define a quantum theory which requires for consistency d = 25 + p dimensions for the bosonic /p/-branes and d = 11 for the supermembrane. This is one of the first quantum results for extended objects beyond string theory and is a confirmation of the expectation of an eleven-dimensional quantum membrane. The two last papers deal with a gauged WZNW-approach to strings moving on non-trivial space-times. The groups used in the formulation of these models are connected to Hermitian symmetric spaces of non-compact type. We have found that the GKO-construction does not yield a unitary spectrum. We will show that there exists, however, a different approach, the BRST approach, which gives unitarity under certain conditions. This is the first example of a difference between the GKO- and BRST construction. This is one of the first proofs of unitarity of a string theory in a non-trivial non-compact space-time. Furthermore, new critical string theories in dimensions less then 26 or 10 is found for the bosonic and supersymmetric string, respectively.

Color image processing problems in digital photography

Ferradans Ramonde, Sira 29 September 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, we discuss three image processing topics: High Dynamic Range (HDR) image creation in scenes with motion, Tone Mapping (TM), and Demosaicking. The first part of this thesis focuses on the creation of HDR images using gradient fusion techniques, and proposes a method that deals with motion and avoids bleeding and ghost artifacts. In the second part, we tackle the TM problem, whose goal is to produce a low dynamic range picture from an HDR image that reproduces the sensation of an observer in the scene. We review the perceptual principles that we find important for TM purposes and present a new method that compares well to the state of the art. Finally, we propose a new method to reconstruct the three color channels of a picture taken with a Bayer filter. This problem is called Demosaicking and will be presented in the third part of this thesis.

Where art meets life in secret : excavating subjects in selected works of Michael Ondaatje

Amid, David Jonathan 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In re-imagining the relationship between words and life, or alternately between self and world, the novelist is in a unique position not merely to reproduce these interlinked relationships through the practice of writing, but to use the unique possibilities extended by the form and content of the novel as literary genre to reveal this interpenetration of ontological and epistemological domains; to render visible what is normally regarded as separate. To disclose how the imaginative domain of fiction writing mirrors the novelistic character of material reality, this dissertation discusses three Michael Ondaatje works, The English Patient, Anil’s Ghost and Divisadero. Through a careful close reading it explores the manner in which Ondaatje‘s form of philosophical thought juxtaposes many genres and expressive forms into a highly complex, playful and self-referential metafictional whole. With a focus on close reading supplemented rather than determined by critical theory, this dissertation then sets out to demonstrate how the author‘s work advances the provocative central thesis that fictional texts not only reflect upon events, thoughts and emotions, but that philosophical works of literature and art are necessarily performative and interrogative, able to question aspects of the self, and ultimately able to present ethical ways of being and therapeutic escape to readers.

Abstract: Rua do Porto (Porto Street), as is known Beira Rio Avenue, Piracicaba city, São Paulo State, Brazil, has been promoting for 182 years the Feast of the Holy Ghost. Born form devotion of local people and a form to thank for the gracefulness they catch up in the name of Holy Ghost, the Feast is one of the most representatives in the city. It has in its structure, several practices that we identify in this work as Poetics constituent (make up) of the event, and its symbolic forms. To develop this thesis we use the event while a visual work. So we appealed from Fayga Ostrower's theorist work to authors of Humanistic Geography and studious of folk and popular culture, to sociologic work of Antonio Candido and aesthetes. The present proposal limited to observe the Feast celebrated in the period of July 2005 to July 2008. It is possible today to be on the point, looking for in the thesis, that had as hypothesis the question if there was one aesthetic country culture of São Paulo state, defined in its demonstrations of popular plastic art of paulista countryside, the statement that there is in this aesthetic, principally if we get the sense as a group of features with a nature artistic creative showed in a form of visual features. It is already possible to be a system according to each poetic present in this cultural existence. This evidence of aesthetic leads to this work. In this sense, what is in the beginning point while a doubt, or while a vague certainty mediated for notes, little by little, as a result of a careful view, modifying, when gained quality argue support, as much observation in field as starting by aesthetics theory from historical approach and other humanities knowledge. / Doutorado / Doutor em Artes

Alimentos, bandeiras e folias: elementos constituintes das festas subalternas / Alimentos, bandeiras e folias: elementos constituintes das festas subalternas

Henrique Alckmin Prudente 16 April 2010 (has links)
The way of capitalist production, through its mechanisms of expansion, brings as expeditious more latent the accumulation of endless goods and the exacerbation of the use of the natural resources, factor unchained for the consumption. The popular feasts, one of the categories and forms of expression of the subordinate cultures sidewalk in the history, are submitted to the avalanche of the ideologies propagated for the media communication. This frail excessively the cultural attributes of these manifestations, placing at risk practical libertarians who operate to the default of the great capital and they are centered in the daily one. The study of the popular feasts in question, the Feast of the Holy Ghost Saint and the Feast of the Nut of the Climatic Station of Cunha, it aims at to exalt the link between cultural identity and popular feasts. This relation if discloses as prodigious instrument of communication that, through half as symbolic materials and, transmits throughout the time a diverse cultural legacy based on the relations between the social groups and the nature. Practical the festive ones demonstrate, following, a full potential for the usage of the conscience of the receiving citizens. As objects of the knowledge they show in the academic context a look with in the high spirits to contribute for the theories of the culture and the communication.

Pobreza e alianças: análise das relações entre uma comunidade de vida e aliança no Espírito Santo e a cidade de São Paulo / Poverty and alliances: an analysis of the relations between a life and alliance within the Holy Ghost community and the city of São Paulo

Pierina Angélica Soratto Jacinto 21 February 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines the mutual construction of religion and the city. More specifically, the analysis is focused in how catholic activities, houses and beliefs conceive and are related to urban spaces and actors, articulating circuits, patches and turfs in São Paulo. On the other hand, this approach also analyses how the city, as a social reality historically constructed, framed formatted the establishment, as well as how it reflects on the catholic activities, houses and beliefs observed. The empirical object of this research consists of a religious organization usually classified as a life and alliance within the Holy Ghost community, called Mercy alliance, anthropologically analyzed by means of the ethnographic theoretical and methodological resource (method). The Mercy Alliance is constituted as a religious actor, which establishes its houses and activities, therefore relating itself to the city, by means of a broad notion of poverty. This Christian notion of poverty is responsible for the making of several alliances, on which the observed community legitimates and supports its actions in different urban domains. Finally, the notion of poverty developed by the Mercy Alliance engenders the demonization of certain urban spaces and actors, classified as poor in a material sense, thus articulating a definition of the city as hell that shall be evangelized by new and different methods.

Origines et premiers développements de l'ordre hospitalier du Saint-Esprit dans les limites de la France actuelle (fin XIIe-fin XIIIe siècles) / Origins and early developments of the Order of the Holy Ghost within the borders of contemporary France (end of XIIth – end of XIIIth centuries)

Durand Dol, Françoise 07 December 2011 (has links)
The Holy Ghost Hospital of Rome was given to the Hospitaller Order of the Holy Ghost as central house in 1208. This order appeared in 1198 in Montpellier, founded by Gui probably younger brother of Guilhem VIII, who gave it its Institutions and developed it linked with the city trade and Guilhems alliances, Aragon and Burgundy, before he obtained from Innocent III the pontifical protection. As he could not obtain a church in Montpellier, the order was finally instituted in 1204 by Innocent III in the church of Saint Mary in Saxia of Rome, at once with union of both Montpellier's house and hospital that the pope founded there and then. Its rule, strongly influenced by Knights Hospitaller's own rule, instituted a general welcome, rounds in town searching for sick people and a mixed community, in a way of life recognized by Innocent III as regular but distinct from monks or canons proper rules. The partisans of the counts of Toulouse committed misuses on the pretext of the privileges, which brought houses disunity in 1217 and an arduous process of reorganization in the context of royal control advancement across southern France. The knowledge of expansion in the area of present France suffers from the lack of sources and from many false documents accumulated at instigation of Royal State during XVII and XVIII centuries. Theorder counted then only thirty-five hospitals and a few annexes. Its development has been jammed with conflicts between the Holy See and the kingdoms of France and Aragon, but remained significant in the Empire and actual in Plantagenet territories. In the end of XIII century it was still a model, without any participation known to Joachimites drifts.
