A Low-Cost Technology to Assess Aircraft Noise at Non-Towered General Aviation Airports

Chuyang Yang (13163034) 27 July 2022 (has links)
<p>  </p> <p>Aircraft noise is one of the most significant environmental concerns for the aviation industry, and it adversely affects the physical and mental health of community members who are in close proximity to airports. The operations and expansion of airports and land use planning are affected because of the community’s adverse reaction to such annoyances. Aircraft operations and fleet mix information are required when airport managers and stakeholders execute the Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT) to compute the noise metrics; however, these data are unavailable from over 2,000 United States non-primary General Aviation (GA) airports that lack full-time air traffic control facilities or personnel. </p> <p>This study developed a low-cost noise assessment technology for non-towered GA airports. The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) messages were obtained using an inexpensive ADS-B receiver. A barometric pressure calibration was applied to improve the aircraft operations estimation. A fleet mix database was created by linking the collected ADS-B data to an FAA-registered aircraft database containing U.S.-registered aircraft information (such as types of aircraft and engines). Specific aircraft information was obtained by filtering the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) identification code from the obtained ADS-B records. A set of 20 advanced aircraft performance parameters was constructed to determine the operation mode and corresponding power setting. The corresponding noise levels were determined using the EUROCONTROL Aircraft Noise and Performance (ANP) database.</p> <p>The testing and validation results from the case study at the Purdue University Airport (ICAO Code: KLAF) demonstrated the developed low-cost approach could identify aircraft noise events, and the accuracy of modeled noise data was assessed with an average error of 4.50 dBA. Therefore, the developed approach appears to be an affordable means of monitoring aircraft noise at non-towered GA airports.  </p>

Modular Vehicle Design Concept

Rue, Timothy James 23 January 2015 (has links)
Outlined herein is the Modular Vehicle [MODV] concept as a cost effective, utilitarian, and highly functional vehicle concept for the changing demands placed on a MAGTF [Marine Air-Ground Task Force] or SP-MAGTF [Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force] in the 21st century. A large focus is put on the importance of modularity and cost effectiveness of having a 24 hour configurable vehicle to a specific mission and area of operation. Off-road vehicle progression through history is presented and successful design features are noted in order to develop underlying goals for the modular vehicle. The thesis emphasizes recent technology advancements that can shift the foundations of vehicle design including wheel hub motors, high capacity batteries, solid oxide fuel cells, autonomy, structural health monitoring, energy harvesting shock absorbers, non-pneumatic tires, and drive-by-wire options. Predictions on the outlook for the technology progressions is discussed to give insight into the viability of basing a vehicle concept on these technologies. Finally, physical design bounds are presented to provide a foundation for the future design of such a vehicle. / Master of Science

Le renouveau de la marche urbaine : Terrains, acteurs et politiques / The renewal of walking in the urban realm : fields, actors and policies

Lavadinho, Sonia 14 October 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the renewal of walking in the urban realm since the last decade. A great number of cities in Europe and abroad have been promoting walking since the year 2000 with renewed energy. This trend accompanies operations of urban renewal through different scales within the integrated framework of new urbanism, transit-oriented development, to match the desire of these urban authorities to make their territory a more walkable place in order to become sustainable and liveable cities. These changes are analysed through the intricated prisma of several urban disciplines, namely geography, sociology and anthropology. A multi-site participant observation methodology has been applied to the case studies of Lausanne, Geneva and Bilbao to extract from their experiences the utmost in walking promotion tools and positive visions for a walkable future. The hypothesis of this work is based on the bold assumption that the scale of the agglomeration is the best scale today to think and plan for walking in our urban scattered environments. Walking is therefore to be considered beyond proximity alone. It is better taken when synergies may evolve from intertwining its nearness dynamics with the potential offered by the scale and speed of other modes of transport, namely public transport and shared modes. Within this framework of thought, the thesis reviews facts and figures as well as best practices in order to give walking the place it deserves within our multimodal world.

Füge- und Übertragungsverhalten torsionsbelasteter Stahl-Aluminium-Rändelpressverbindungen / Joining and transmission behaviour of torsional stressed steel-aluminum knurled interference fits

Lätzer, Michael 15 June 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The present thesis provides analytical, numerical and experimental fundamental studies for the joining behaviour and the transmission behaviour of a friction and form closure steel-aluminum knurled interference fit. The special feature of this connection is a knurled and oversize hard steel shaft, longitudinally pressed in a soft aluminum hub with a circular bore. The most important parameter for the joining process is the shaft chamfer angle φ. Due to the shaft chamfer angle φ the material of the hub will be formed or cutted during the joining process. By using the relative strength, the quotient of push out force and joining force who describes the joint strength, a first quality parameter for a precise selection of steel-aluminum knurled interference fit has been derived. The description of the experimentally determined torque - twisting angle – curves has shown areas of design criterion and mechanical breakdown. The maximum transmittable torque is achieved by reaching the shearing stress of the knurls in the hub - mechanical breakdown τ S. Similar to the joining and the push out behaviour, the positive influence of the shaft chamfer angle φ is also shown at the transmittable torque. Furthermore, knurled interference fits joined by forming can transmit higher torques of about 40% than interference fits joined by cutting due to the material hardening. The mechanical-physical model for calculating the static transmittable torque is based on the serration connection. Thus, the torque at the design criterion and the maximum transmittable torque at the mechanical breakdown can be found. The consideration of the forming or cutting joining process is described as a function of the shaft chamfer angle φ using the so-called angle-based plastic strain ε plRPV.

Human resources strategies for effective management applications at Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation / Arthur Mzwandile Skosana.

Skosana, Arthur Mzwandile January 2010 (has links)
This study investigates the restructuring and alignment processes within the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation. The nature of the study was neither inclusive nor an exclusive study accommodate every input of the sub-directorate, and review the staff capacity to meet with set objectives of the Department. It also investigates some of the problematic areas shortsighted by the restructuring and alignment processes in the hub and areas of concerns which included: Accommodation (office space and sports fields); support of staff by senior managers; contracting and performance reviews; transport; progress review meeting of the hub system; budgeting and its implementation; equipment demand; administration tools leading severe problems; contracting of contract workers leading severe problems; and overtime and excessive workload in the hubs. It was showed in the research that problems occurred due to the inappropriate alignment of internal programmes complimented with inadequate human resources strategic planning and implementation. The problem of restructuring and alignment are due to oversight on the processes and implementation of the programmes at the foundational level, the lack of follow-ups on Service Level Agreement (SLA) with local government (still not signed), interdepartmental and intergovernmental integration strategy not in place, inadequate facilities for offices, consultation with community and stakeholders which only took place at the later stage. The respondents seriously commented regarding the organisational structure that has been changed thrice since its implementation. This led to overcrowding of staff hubs, with no career path strategy. Further causes are lack of alignment of human resource management strategy with programmes, and structural arrangement of all the departmental sub-directorates, confusing the implementation of programmes and the reporting systems. Considering the challenges of restructuring and alignment at the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the study concludes that there is a need for further restructuring and alignment of the human resource strategy to manage the objectives of the Department effectively and efficiently. / Thesis (M. Optimizing the Supply Chain Performance at Ericsson AB : A Study of Lead Time Reduction and Service Level Improvement / Optimering av försörjningskedjans prestanda hos Ericsson AB : En studie om ledtidsreducering och förbättrad servicenivå

Stenberg, Marcus, Larsson, Jesper January 2016 (has links)
Ericsson has recently experienced difficulties to meet the customer demand, which has led to lost market shares. This is mainly due to the long and unpredictable lead times within their supply chains. Therefore, Ericsson seeks to increase their ability to meet the customer demand by reducing the customer order lead time. A shorter lead time would imply a greater responsiveness and improved service level towards the customers. A directive from the company was to base the study on the supply chain for the customer Algeria Telecom Mobile. The purpose of the study is to give recommendations for improvements that reduce the total lead time in a supply chain perspective in order to improve the customer service level.  To be able to fulfill the purpose, four objectives were distinguished and supported with existing frameworks for analyzing supply chains. The first step was to create a current state map, which was achieved by conducting 24 interviews with people working within the supply chain. The second step was to identify potentials for lead time reduction. This was done by categorizing the supply chain parts and the problems that were gathered during the current state mapping into meaningful groups, and thereafter prioritize the categories with the greatest potential. The third step was to generate alternative solutions by conducting a second literature review based on the potentials that was identified during the prior step. The general solutions were later modified in order to fit the current supply chain. It resulted in eight Ericsson specific solutions. The fourth step was to evaluate these solutions in combination, which led to a recommended combination of solutions that provided the greatest lead time reduction. Also the requirements for implementing these solutions were presented in this step.  The recommendation for Ericsson is to rearrange their current supply chain for the studied customer and use two different supply chains; the Regional supply chain and the Alternative supply chain. The two arrangements will both be based on the implementation of a supply hub, which implies a movement of the customer order decoupling point closer to the customer. The Regional supply chain will cover the main flow and be used when the customer orders products from a product portfolio that has been agreed within the region. The Alternative supply chain will act as a complement and cover the flow of products outside the regional product portfolio.   The estimated customer order lead time for the Regional supply chain is 17 days, which is a reduction of 80 % in the normal case for the studied supply chain. The lead time for the Alternative supply chain is more difficult to estimate precisely, but it will be reduced in comparison with the current situation. Moreover, the service level towards the customer will be increased for both the Regional and the Alternative supply chain. To summarize the recommendations that are forwarded to Ericsson, they are listed below:  <li data-listid="34" data-aria-posinset="15" data-aria-level="1">Implement a regional supply hub  <li data-listid="34" data-aria-posinset="15" data-aria-level="1">Agree on a regional product portfolio  <li data-listid="34" data-aria-posinset="15" data-aria-level="1">Implement time slots for inbound flows  <li data-listid="34" data-aria-posinset="15" data-aria-level="1">Use BPO as a payment method instead of Letter of Credit  <li data-listid="34" data-aria-posinset="15" data-aria-level="1">Use a CIP, DAP or DAT Incoterm  <li data-listid="34" data-aria-posinset="15" data-aria-level="1">Implement a product configurator and let the customer place orders on commercial descriptions or a solution id.  <li data-listid="34" data-aria-posinset="15" data-aria-level="1">Integrate processes and activities throughout the supply chain and establish a greater information exchange.
