The Viking Age as a Themed Experience: Representing Hitorical Narrative Through Research Based DesignMacPherson, Edward D 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
I intend to design an interactive educational experience that teaches guests about the culture, society, and beliefs of Scandinavian peoples during the Viking age. The concepts are illustrated through a dynamic narrative designed to be experienced through exploration of a themed environment. Immersion into the narrative is intended to instill a sense of active participation with the culture itself. This interaction is intended to inspire guests to further investigate the culture and history outside the limits of the experience. These qualities, unique to an immersive environmental themed experience, capture the lasting attention of an audience such as other mediums may not. Design and narrative decisions in the experience will be supported and justified by research of primary sources (untranslated medieval sagas from Iceland and Norway, archeological artifacts from the region and period, the prose and poetic Eddas) and secondary sources (translations and interpretations of Viking age literature and mythology, archeological documentation and interpretation of primary sources.) One goal of this experience will be to dispel common misconceptions of medieval Scandinavian culture and society propagated by popular literary, film, television, and video game representations, and to present a historically justified representation as equally compelling. Strict historical exactitude, however, is not the intent. A model of a historical Viking archeological site could be accurately created. However, it will not necessarily be as engaging as an endeavor that takes certain creative license. This thesis is also an experiment in establishing a groundwork for educational representations of historic and modern cultures in themed experiences. I use Viking iv Age Scandinavia, a culture with which I have significant academic experience prior to this thesis, as a test case for this idea. The scope of the project includes a designed and planned themed experience expressed through written and visual mediums where appropriate, as well as historical justification for design and narrative choices.

Throughout the last century, the inclusion of themes exploited according to figurative, allegorical and narrative characteristics, has become frequent in commercial and leisure oriented places. A study of Greek pre-school teachers’ perceptions of LGBTQ-themed literature in kindergarten classroomsKaragrigori, Foteini January 2019 (has links)
Purpose: The present thesis aims to gain an insight into pre-school teachers’ perceptions of the relevance of using illustrated books that include representations of same-gender families/relationships and address issues of gender expression that do not follow the normative gender categories in the classroom. The thesis was conducted within the interdisciplinary field of child studies, drawing from a social constructivist viewpoint and having queer theory as a point of departure. Methods: A small-scale, qualitative study was designed, which included semi-structured interviews with pre-school teachers who educate four to six years old children in Greece. Five participants were interviewed, and the interviews were analysed with the use of thematic analysis. The questions asked in the interviews were oriented around the teachers’ reflections on the use of a mentioned book in their classrooms, upon possibilities or difficulties in relation to the use of this kind of literature and finally, their ideas about children, gender and sexuality. Results: The pre-school teachers did not discuss the implementation of pedagogical practices that are driven by interrupting heteronormativity, neither positively nor negatively. They did discuss an unwillingness to address topics about sexual minorities or gender non-conformity within their classrooms, because of the following difficulties: unreadiness, children’s insensibility towards sexual minority topics, societal normative values. Finally, they discussed gender understood as synonymous to sex and through the binary of male and female. Conclusions: The findings of the thesis support the ongoing silencing of some forms of sexuality or gender-related topics in early childhood education. Furthermore, they provide an insight into the difficulties pre-school educators come across when they face the dilemma of addressing topics that challenge heteronormativity. Moreover, the results of the study problematise dominant discourses about children, gender and sexuality. Consequently, this study presents in-depth qualitative knowledge of a small group of pre-school teachers and motivates further research on gender education that Greek children receive.

NTA som verktyg för naturvetenskap i förskolan : En intervjustudie om NTA:s roll i arbetet med naturvetenskap på förskolan / NTA as a tool for natural science in the pre-school : An interview study on NTA's role in the work with science at the preschoolJohan, Zetterberg January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge about the pre-school teachers' view of the role NTA plays in the field of science education. NTA, which stands for Natural Science and Technology for All, is a concept for school development offered for preschool and elementary school. The study uses semi structured interviews. Six preschool teachers at a preschool from four different departments have been interviewed. All preschool teachers have completed NTA training to work with natural science themed boxes. The result shows that NTA is used both planned and spontaneously. Most often, the chil- dren work with the experiments in the boxes in smaller groups, but on some occasions the thematic experiments are used as a demonstration for larger groups. As to how NTA influenced the other teaching, the study shows that it helped to visualize the natural science work and increase the scientific aware- ness of the educators. One conclusion of the survey is that the work on the thematic boxes is an inspiration for the natural science work in the preschool and that the educators are positively prepared for this work. I studien används semistrukturerade intervjuer.

Realityserier, online vs TV : En undersökning om intresset för realityserier / Reality shows, online vs. TV : An investigation of the interest in reality showsSandberg, Sebastian January 2020 (has links)
The availability to stream movies and series online has increased immensely throughout this decade, being reliant on freeing up time during your day to be able to watch your favorite tv-show has become less necessary due to the fact that you’re able to stream it whenever you want or can, once it’s been released. Reality television has been a big part of the tv tabloid for almost two decades now and it had it’s peak in audience during the years 2009-2012 and has been reportedly decreasing the following years. There has been little to none research regarding reality tv’s progression and audience recently, which has made us curious as to its current state. This article aims to research whether or not the interest in watching romantically themed reality tv has had a continued decline these recent years due to its lack of content variation and if its audience has gradually gone over to streaming it online rather than watching it on tv. We have studied three different reality shows views online and on television per episode during the years of 2015-2018. This way, we could add the views online and on television together to see if the view count in total has increased or decreased each year, as well as being able to compare the difference in views online versus views on television each year to see if the quota who streams has increased. Our hypotheses were met with matching results from our rese

Boj se zlem:stereotypizace antagonistů ve válečných počítačových hrách / The Fight against Evil: Stereotypization of Antagonists in War-Themed ShootersHouška, Jan January 2020 (has links)
Using the method of qualitative content analysis, my research is focused on the visual and ideological representation of antagonists in eight PC games of first-person shooter genre (FPS), released between 2007 and 2019. The analysis is based on the identification of the stereotypical antagonistic representations. Its main attention is devoted to the ethnic and national stereotypes, because antagonists are ethnic and national Others in relation to protagonists. I aimed to define another summarizing and defining criterion of antagonistic representation, apart from the categories of othering already mentioned. In my thesis, I also describe ideological aspects which frame antagonistic representation. For the analysis of ideological content, I use Pötzsch's selective realism, which, by means of the four filters (violence, consequence, character and conflict) excludes negative and controversial aspects of war from FPS games. Not only does selective realism presents war selectively, it represents antagonistic actions selectively, too. In the text, I identify the stereotypical representations of three ethnic-national groups - orientalism and Cold War stereotypes in the case of Russians, neo-orientalism in the case of Middle Eastern antagonists and techno-orientalism in the case of East Asians. The ideology...

The quality of service and the atmosphere of the place as determinants of the intention to re-visit in themed restaurants in the AB sector in Lima MetropolitanaCasella Azañedo, Gianella Alexandra 08 July 2020 (has links)
This research work shows the relationship between the quality of service and atmosphere of the premises with the intention of revisiting in thematic restaurants, specifically the AB sector in Lima Metropolitana. This work will analyze and evaluate the various dimensions of the above variables. In turn, the strategies used by this sector to incentivize return to the premises will be observed.
Themed restaurants are currently a trend in the market, as they differ from traditional restaurants. They present a specific theme generating a different experience towards the consumer. Highlighting its quality of service, that is, personalized attention, knowledge of the menu by the waiter and the quality of the product; atmosphere: the atmosphere of the place and design elements. However, those elements are not sufficient for the demanding consumer to intend to return to the restaurant.
Through the qualitative and quantitative study, which included interviews with the target audience, experts on the subject of research and surveys by Google Forms, it was found that there is a relationship between the quality of service and atmosphere of the premises with the intention of revisit. The customer has high expectations, which the themed restaurant was not meeting. Being a differential restaurant, we expect a highly personalized attention, with good products and an atmosphere that brings the diner to the theme proposed by the restaurant, as well as an interaction between local and consumer generating that it has a good experience and increases the likelihood of revisit. / Trabajo de investigación

Journey to Machu Picchu: Where History, Culture, and Imagination IntertwineEdwards, Sarah Grace 24 July 2023 (has links)
This thesis began as an exploration of how to create an immersive design through an immersive design experience. The project I used to study this inquiry was the design of a new country pavilion at Epcot in Walt Disney World based on Peru. This project revealed that in architecture, the design process is integral to the outcome; they are interwoven and cannot be separated. Weaving has emerged throughout every level of this investigation, from the intertwining of the overarching ideas to the physical and metaphysical weaving within the project. The method in which I worked became a weaving of the study of artifacts with the use of traditional architectural techniques and the exploration of emerging design technologies.
Traditional architectural design processes must be iterated on and adapted to better address more specialized sectors of the industry. For a themed entertainment project specifically, the design process must be catered to understanding and enhancing the user experience. I argue that a more immersive, multimedia design process is necessary to appropriately address these issues. / Master of Architecture / This thesis began as an exploration of how to create an immersive design through an immersive design experience.
