This research investigates, via a transdisciplinary lens, the work of the Swiss-‘Bahian’ composer Walter Smetak. We argue that to clearly understand the work of Smetak, it should be viewed from a transdiciplinary perspective, as bringing together cosmological, philosophical, as well as anthropological elements. In this way, the work situates itself at an intersection of disciplinary currents which Smetak sought to mediate by way of his musical practice. According to his conception, the musical act assimilates diverse forms of productivity, to instigate the emergence of a new consciousness in the musician/researcher. As such, a more strictly aesthetic practice seeks to expand its field of application, showing how aesthetic production interrogates modes of productivity at a more general level, as constitutive of anthropological forms. By relativizing the coherence of the anthropological by demonstrating the mutability of its forms of production, Smetak aims to point out the constant collaboration that the anthropological sustains with the cosmos, which functions as its exterior.

Naturalizing Sustainability Discourse: Paradigm, Practices and Pedagogy of Thoreau, Leopold, Carson and Wilson

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT Understanding complex and adaptive socio-ecological systems (SES) to deal with our most challenging and overlapping problems such as global climate change, biodiversity loss, and rising consumption rates requires sustainability theory that is commensurate with these problems’ size and complexity. The received United Nations-based sustainability framework aims to achieve a balance among three pillars—economics, environment, and social equity—for today and for future generations. Yet, despite applying this sustainability framework for over a quarter of a century, the Earth is less sustainable, not more. Theoretical trade-offs between environmental conservation and economic growth have often reinforced business-as-usual practices and educational paradigms, and emphasized economic values over ecological limits. How can the principles of foundational naturalists help clarify, enhance, and advance sustainability discourse? I propose that the principles of Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), Aldo Leopold (1887-1948), Rachel Carson (1907-1964), and Edward O. Wilson (1927-), express a worldview that captures and integrates a range and depth of historical, normative, economic, ecological, scientific, and social values for a viable and applicable discourse of sustainability. This analytical study relies on (i.) textual analysis and interpretation of four key naturalists and humanists, (ii.) analysis of secondary sources that illuminate their proto- ecological and sustainability principles, and (iii.) interviews with leading sustainability scholars. Because these thinkers integrate science and ethics, natural history and philosophy, ecology and society, and environmental and economic problems within a holistic worldview, I call them systems naturalists. Their transdisciplinary worldview of one holistic system, with economics subordinated to environmental limits, links important values from the natural sciences and the humanities. The writings and examples of systems naturalists provide more robust historical sustainability principles that can help solve our most challenging SES problems by synthesizing a broad range of knowledge in the sciences, social sciences, and the humanities to inform sustainability paradigm, practices, and pedagogy. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Sustainability 2015

Reading Resonance in Tang Tales: Allegories and Beyond

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: As many modern scholars have warned, the complexity of Tang narratives is far beyond the reach of Lu Xun’s twentieth-century generic labels. Therefore, we should have an acute awareness of the earlier limiting view of these categorizations, and our research should transcend the limitations of these views in regard to this extensive corpus or to being confined to rigid and meager reading of the richness of the stories. This dissertation will use a transdisciplinary methodology that incorporates both history and literature in close reading of seven Tang tales composed in the mid-to-late Tang eras (780s–early 900s), to break the boundaries between the two generic labels, chuanqi and zhiguai, and unearth significant configurations within these literary texts that become apparent only through stepping across genre. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation East Asian Languages and Civilizations 2017

This research is pertinent to the issues related to educational challenges in a socio-environmental crisis as conceived under the guidance of the ComplexSystemic Thought. More specifically, this case study was made with a focus on Education for Ecodevelopment and suggested an investigation on how the process of transdisciplinary anthropoformation (PINEAU, 2005) has been occurring among the group members of the Environment and Development Transdisciplinary Center (NMD) of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), from 2010 to 2013. Besides, the limits and potential involved with the transdisciplinary anthropoformation process were identified through the application of the developmental-action-inquiry methodology. This research was made with subjects of the NMD which took part on the execution of the Educational Experimental Project for Ecodevelopment (EPE Project) on the Ibiraquera neighborhood, on the municipality of Imbituba, centralsouthern area of the coastline of Santa Catarina state. The data was obtained through semi-structured interviewing and application of the project‘s blazon technique. Data analysis through argument composition (YIN, 2005) showed that the process of transdisciplinary anthropoformation of the studied group is still developing from an early stage and that the heteroformation and the co-formation are still overcoming self-formation and eco-formation. Following the second analysis, one of dialogical nature, it was possible to identify the following limitations involved with the process of development of the studied group: (i) the overcoming of conflicts inherent to strategies based on collective learning; (ii) having enough time to arrange harmonically the activities of individual academic research, personal life, and the professional life which makes up for personal needs and group activities, including intervening on the group; (iv) the incipient participation of many of those involved in the many niches of collective learning; (v) the clarity of commitment of the integrants of the group having education for Ecodevelopment as a life‘s project; (vi) the frail realm of self-confidence and confidence among subjects involved with this collective life project; and (vii) fitting financial resources needed to keep the subjects of the group effectively involved with a project that seeks social, cultural, political and economical transformation through education. As for the identified potential, there count: (i) incentive to a new world view which allows a comprehension of how systems imbricate on systems; (ii) incentive to a new view on education, where human development is perceived in a wider context and integrally accomplished; (iii) the possibility of socialization between scientific knowledge and traditional knowledge, with no hierarchies and through a dialogical sharing of information; and (iv) the space for human unidiversity (MORRIN, 2000) through collective living, with a new paradigm for community and learning (SAUVÉ, 2001). Given the contemporary stage of formation of the group on the NMD involved with Education for Ecodevelopment, it is concluded that commitment of the group members is essential, as is their dedication towards group study planning, with the very group, and with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, and the constant search for sustainable autonomy of the group members and of the very EPE Project.

Análise crítica da carta-testamento de Getúlio Vargas: uma abordagem inter/transdisciplinar / Critic review of the letter/will of Getúlio Vargas: an inter/transdisciplinary approach

Nilton Cesar Nicola 05 May 2016 (has links)
In an inter/transdisciplinary approach, the researcher intends to articulate the ACD with the study of socio-economic-political structures of a certain historical moment, in this case, the Brazilian, on the second half of the 20th Century. The Letter-testament left by the gaucho politician Getúlio Dornelles Vargas, then president of the Republic, by the time of his suicide, at the Palace of Catete, Rio de Janeiro, on August 24th, 1954, became the main object for an inter/transdisciplinary analyses, having as its epistemological support, the Critical Linguistic. In such analyses, theoretical bases were found in the studies of Norman Fairclough, Teun A. van Dijk, Michael A. K. Halliday, amongst others. Edgar Morin´s ideas, expert on the theory of complex thought, enriched the part of the work related to the inter/transdisciplinary approach. Hilton Japiassu´s thoughts of the role of inter/transdisciplinary approach to scientific research have been incorporated here as well. Contributions from the studies of the ethos of a discourse were taken into consideration. Based on the above principals, a linguistic, social and political analysis were done over the Letter-testament, signed by the enunciator (Getúlio Vargas), in whose text he reveals a will for domination and political manipulation of the Brazilian people. The categories studied were the historical, emotional, mystic, linguistic and discursive ethos. As the work is developed, it is possible to construct a dialogue between the linguistic and the social theories, due to the inter/transdisciplinary and contextualized approach. Going one step further, one can say that limiting ACD to the simple analyses of language (in fact, running away from its aims) is harmful to a more complete vision of the signals socially constructed and integrated. The conclusion goes for the possible dialogue amongst ACD and other social sciences in an inter/transdisciplinary approach, taking into consideration the context of the Letter-testament, the discourse as a social practice, and how the relationships of power, domination and control can be stablished and maintained through different ways of using a language.

From this, we tried to diagnose, analyze and understand the results presented by students and teachers to enter the honey in their daily lives, causing the participants to adopt a new attitude front this product, since consumption was not a established habit in the community. The method we had used was the qualitative and quantitative research, data collection through participant observation and questionnaires. After the workshops, it was observed that most participants correctly answered the questionnaires and demonstrated mastery of concepts such as the environment, diseases, geographical regions and management of bees. For the realization of work, the transdisciplinary approach has been adopted as the basis for the transmission of knowledge. Through this project, it was possible to recover the perspective of the importance of honey in the daily lives of participants and enter the CODAI transdisciplinarity as an alternative to the traditional method of teaching / Com o intuito central de analisar a import?ncia da transdisciplinaridade enquanto estrat?gia pedag?gica para a constru??o do conhecimento junto a alunos do ensino t?cnico, procurou-se responder ? seguinte quest?o: Qual a import?ncia da transdisciplinaridade enquanto estrat?gia pedag?gica para a constru??o do conhecimento a partir do tema transversal (apicultura)? Toward a Transdisciplinary Model of Highly Emotional Experiences in Narrative Media : An Inwards Sound Design Approach

Wozniak, Robert January 2017 (has links)
With an ever increasing pool of theories designed to help the creator instill emotion, we’reapproaching a point where even the most stubborn audience can’t fully escape the grasp thatfilm can have on their feelings. Thanks to multidisciplinary research for the cognitive andsympathetic structures that make up emotions (Blincoe, 2011; Dolan, 2002; Ekman, 1973;Panksepp, 2004), a larger understanding for emotions has been built. In succession, anintegrative emotion model is becoming a realistic proposition (Loui & Harrison, 2014). Inthis thesis I’m suggesting that to make such a model a success, an understanding of the targetgroup is a requirement. I argue that each project has unique criteria found in the individual, rather than in the current general understanding of the human mind and body, and it’s appliedknowledge in modern design theories. This angle requires new tools, which I attempt tocreate based on Scherer’s (2001) Sequential Check Theory, in combination with establishedethnographic methods. In turn the tools will be tested on a local self-defined group as anintroduction to the workflow and data collection. To prove the model’s transdisciplinarypotential I attempt to apply this data in a real world sound design context, where this methodis hypothetically less effective than earlier stages in production, like writing. To generatequalitative data, the films, in the form of two pilot episodes of a series, will be shown to thetarget group. One episode without our theory applied, and the other with changes accordingto data collection and model directions. Rounding it out with a questionnaire regardingelicited emotion, and qualitative interviews, it stands as a sufficient base for discussion, albeitrather lacking as proof of concept. The thesis ends with a discussion of potential futureapplications where models like this one could be applied. / HYENOR

The Perceptions of Speech-Language Therapists Regarding Nutritional Issues in Early Intervention

Evens, Felicity Jane January 2002 (has links)
The traditional role of speech-language therapists as feeding specialists appears to have focused primarily on the mechanics of feeding disorders, without fully considering the impact of nutritional needs on a child's development and communication. The aim of the study was to investigate the experiences and perceptions of a group of speech-language therapists regarding nutritional issues in children requiring feeding therapy or early communication intervention. A qualitative research design was employed in the form of a descriptive survey and a questionnaire was compiled as the data collection instrument. Forty-nine questionnaires were delivered to speech-language therapists within the Johannesburg and Pretoria geographical areas, of which 32 were suitable for analysis. Closed ended questions were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics while responses to open-ended questions were categorized thematically. Results indicated that all respondents came into contact with clients who had, or who were at risk for, feeding disorders and nutritional deficiencies. However, findings revealed that during assessment and treatment of these clients, respondents tended to neglect issues related to nutrition, as well as psychosocial issues pertinent to feeding disorders. Furthermore, respondents appeared not to have fully realized the importance of their role as communication specialists within the feeding context. It was found that the majority of respondents were involved within a multidisciplinary team approach; however, the application of the more effective transdisciplinary approach was limited. This was confirmed by results revealing that collaboration with other professionals, such as dieticians, did not consistently occur. In terms of training, it was evident that respondents received the majority of their training in feeding therapy from continued education, which included aspects of nutrition. However, undergraduate training was perceived as having limitations within the theoretical content as well as practical application, and did not incorporate nutritional aspects. In light of the apparent need for a more holistic view of paediatric clients with feeding disorders, suggestions were made regarding the inclusion of vital nutritional issues and psychosocial factors within training and transdisciplinary service delivery in South Africa. Furthermore, relevant research topics within the field of paediatric feeding were presented. Broadening perspectives by means of holistic research and training may enhance service delivery to children with paediatric feeding disorders. / Dissertation (MCommPath)--University of Pretoria, 2002. / tm2015 / Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology / MCommPath / Unrestricted
