Faculty of Humanities School of Literature and language Studies 0314877y acostantino@yahoo.com / This research project aims to examine the relations of power evident in an English pamphlet (the source text) dealing with issues of sexual and reproductive health (including HIV/AIDS) in South Africa, and its Portuguese translation (the target text). A Critical Discourse Analysis model is used to study the articulated structure of the texts in social and historical terms as well as in linguistic terms. In carrying out such a critical examination of these pamphlets, which reflect institutional beliefs, I am guided by the fact that their conditions of production, distribution and consumption can reveal intricate power relations.

Thesis advisor: Dayton Haskin / Homer's Odyssey is a foundational work for the western cultural and literary tradition. It has been translated into English many times over, which reflects a certain enduring relevance of the work and its characters. This thesis examines twelve or so English translations of the Odyssey, from those of Alexander Pope and George Chapman to the modern works of Robert Fagles and Robert Fitzgerald, in their interpretations of specific moments where the hero interacts with Nausikaa, Kalypso, Athena, and Penélopê. Traditionally, although the women of the Odyssey are considered to be active and relevant to Odysseus' journey, they also pose considerable danger to his quest for Ithaka. However, by juxtaposing and comparing various translations from different time periods, we enrich our understanding of the astounding agency these women demonstrate in facilitating the hero's return. As opposed to mere tools that Odysseus utilizes as a means to an end, these women actively interfere in his journey to ensure his safety and bring to fruition the ultimate goal of restoring order on Ithaka. / Submitted to: Boston College. A presente dissertação constitui-se da análise das traduções brasileiras do século XX da obra italiana I Fioretti di San Francesco. Através da análise das escolhas lexicais dos tradutores, e tomando a tradução como um ato lingüístico metonímico, procura-se apresentar as diferentes leituras de I Fioretti disponíveis ao público brasileiro: uma mais rebuscada e clericalizada, porém mais atenta ao original como obra de valor literário; outra mais simples e mais acessível, apesar de menos atenta ao caráter literário do original. / The present dissertation is an analysis of the 20th century Brazilian translations of I Fioretti di San Francesco. Through the analysis of the translators lexical choices, and taking translation as a metonimic linguistic act, it intends to present the different readings of I Fioretti available to the Brazilian readers : one more far-fetched and clericalized, but more attentive to the original as a book with literary value ; another more simple and accessible though less sensitive to the literary aspect of the original.

Thesis advisor: Judith A. Vessey / Teasing among children is pervasive; however, it has received remarkably little attention in the empirical, theoretical, or methodological literature in Taiwan. The purposes of this study were to translate and psychometrically validate the Chinese versions of the CATS (CATS-C). The purposes for this study were accomplished in two major phases. Phase I focused on translating the CATS and evaluating the psychometric equivalency of the original English and translated CATS-C. First, the CATS was translated into Chinese and semantic equivalence was determined by three different kinds of evaluations during the translation process. Then, the semantic equivalence of the translated CATS-C was empirically tested with 25 6th grade bilingual students. The results of the paired sample t-test and the Pearson correlation indicated congruence between the two versions of the CATS on the semantic equivalence. In order to evaluate each item’s relevance in Taiwanese culture, a Content Validity Index (CVI) was calculated among the ratings of the five Taiwanese elementary school teachers. The CVI was .88 for the entire CATS and were .66 to 1.0 for the four subscales. One additional item, “personal hygiene”, was included at the suggestion of the experts. ii Phase II focused on evaluating the psychometric properties of the CATS-C. The 33-item adapted CATS-C was tested on a sample of 343 4th through 6th grade Taiwanese students to determine its psychometric properties. Construct validity was assessed through PCA with Varimax rotation. Reliability was tested through the analysis of internal consistency. The results showed that five-component solution was the most appropriate and interpretable solution for the 29-item CATS-C after deleting four items. Cronbach’s alpha was .91 for the total CATS-C scale and were .73 - .83 for the five CATS-C subscales. The 29-item CATS-C with five components is a culturally appropriate instrument which has potential for determining Taiwanese students at high risk from teasing. Thesis advisor: Laura E. Hake / Metazoan development depends on cytoplasmic polyadenylation, a key mechanism that controls the translation of maternally deposited mRNAs. In Xenopus laevis oocytes, CPEB regulates the translation of several developmentally important mRNAs, which drive meiotic progression and the production of fertilizable eggs. Most of our current knowledge of this process, also referred to as oocyte maturation, has been acquired from experiments conducted in Xenopus laevis oocytes. Despite over 30 years of research devoted to the exploration of progesterone signaling during maturation, the very early events that occur from progesterone receptor engagement to CPEB activation are not well understood. XGef, a putative Rho family guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF), interacts with CPEB and facilitates CPEB activation and timely meiotic progression. To further our understanding of XGef function during meiotic progression, the requirement for exchange factor activity and the activities of several Rho GTPases during maturation were examined. Despite previous reports of XGef activation of Cdc42 in mammalian cell culture, XGef does not stimulate the activation of Cdc42 in maturing Xenopus oocytes. Further, Cdc42 activity does not affect CPEB phosphorylation and overexpression of a dominant negative Cdc42 mutant does not affect maturation. Inhibition of Toxin B sensitive Rho GTPases, including Cdc42, Rac1 and Rho A-C, also fails to affect CPEB activation or meiotic progression. Lastly, the overexpression of XGef exchange deficient point mutants did not affect maturation compared to oocytes overexpressing wildtype XGef. Together, these results suggest that as a facilitator of CPEB activation and meiotic progression, XGef functions independently of exchange factor activity and Rho GTPase activation. Additionally, we found that XGef activity influences the function of RINGO/CDK1, a novel component of the progesterone signaling pathway. XGef inhibition depresses RINGO-induced GVBD, whereas XGef overexpression enhances this process. XGef interacts with RINGO in oocyte extracts and the interaction is direct in vitro. Our protein interaction data, in total, suggest that a XGef/RINGO/MAPK/CPEB complex forms in ovo to facilitate CPEB activation. Lastly, inhibition of RINGO activity directly compromises CPEB phosphorylation during early maturation, which suggests that RINGO/CDK1 directly mediates CPEB-activation. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. [pt] O mercado de tradução para legendagem de programas de TV sofre com a carência de profissionais, constatação que se baseia numa experiência pessoal de doze anos de atuação nessa área. A presente dissertação busca investigar os motivos dessa carência e propor as bases para um curso de formação de legendadores, a partir de uma perspectiva polissistêmica e descritivista da tradução e de uma visão pós-estruturalista do ensino. A proposta aqui apresentada fundamentou-se em um levantamento das competências e habilidades que todo tradutor para legendas precisa desenvolver, elaborado a partir de entrevistas realizadas com importantes atores do polissistema de tradução para legendagem, bem como na análise das normas, coerções e mecanismos de controle com os quais o legendador se vê obrigado a lidar em sua atividade. A reflexão desenvolvida contempla questões metodológicas e de conteúdo e aborda as peculiaridades que caracterizam a tradução para legendas, procurando oferecer uma alternativa que contraponha uma ênfase na formação ao caráter de treinamento que costuma estar associado à maioria dos cursos atualmente disponíveis. Pretende-se, dessa forma, garantir a maior aproximação e interação entre academia e mercado de trabalho, o que deverá redundar em benefício para ambos. / [en] The television subtitling market suffers from a shortage of professionals, as has been attested by twelve years of personal experience in the industry. The purpose of this research was to investigate the reasons behind this shortage and suggest the basis for implementing a course program on subtitling for TV from a descriptive and polysystemic perspective on translation and a poststructuralist view on education. The proposal presented was based on a list of competencies and abilities every subtitle translator must develop, elaborated from interviews with important actors in the translation for subtitles polysystem, and on the analysis of the norms, constraints and control mechanisms with which the subtitler must deal in his or her professional capacity. The considerations brought forth contemplate methodological and content issues and tackle the peculiarities of subtitling, aiming to offer an alternative to the emphasis on training rather than on education which is usually associated with most courses currently available. Thus, this dissertation intends to guarantee a greater interchange between university and industry, which should bring about benefits for both.

Este trabalho se compõe de duas partes. Primeiramente, um estudo introdutório sobre o autor, Antonio Rosmini, sobre sua obra filosófica e, mais especificamente, sobre o livro Principi della scienza morale, que, na segunda parte, traduzimos para o português. Na introdução, expomos brevemente o sistema filosófico rosminiano e o contextualizamos no âmbito histórico-filosófico. Além disso, apresentamos o percurso por nós desenvolvido para obter uma tradução filologicamente correta do texto original, incluindo um breve glossário dos termos filosóficos empregados pelo autor. / This work is composed of two parts. Firstly, there is an introductoty study on the author, Antonio Rosmini, on his phylosophical system and, more specifically, on the book Principi della scienza morale, which we have translated to Portuguese, in the second part. In the introduction, we expose briefly the rosminian phylosofical system and we place it in its historical-phylosofical context. Furthermore, we show the path weve followed to reach a phylologically correct translation from the original text, including a brief glossary of phylosophical terms employed by the author.

Esta dissertação tem por objetivo propor o acesso a uma parte ainda pouco conhecida da obra de Francis Ponge por meio da tradução de quinze textos selecionados, extraídos da antologia de textos inéditos e manuscritos intitulada Pages dAtelier 1917 1982, em diferentes formatos e escritos em diferentes períodos, aqui organizados em torno de quatro temas centrais: Reflexões sobre a literatura, Autorreflexões poéticas, Objetos textuais e Em torno do surrealismo. Considerando a abordagem pretendida, buscamos apresentar as principais características da obra do escritor francês, a saber, as questões da linguagem, a materialidade das palavras e a ausência de formas, além de contextualizar sua obra, discutindo suas influências e trazendo alguns dos diálogos estabelecidos em seus textos com escritores e filósofos franceses. Além disso, o trabalho traz a discussão da tradução e da antologia como espaços de reescrita, importante para se pensar a recepção de Ponge no Brasil. Por se tratar de uma tradução comentada, trazemos ainda uma discussão sobre os tipos de notas possíveis nessa prática. / This dissertation aims at allowing the access to a little known portion of Francis Ponges works by means of the translation of fifteen selected texts, extracted from his anthology of unedited works and manuscripts titled Pages dAtelier 1917-1982, written in different formats and periods, that are here organized around four central themes: Reflections on literature, Poetic self-reflections, Textual objects and On Surrealism. Considering the intended approach, we seek to present the main characteristics of the french writers work, namely, language issues, the materiality of the words and the absence of form, as well as contextualizing his work, discussing its influences and bringing some of the dialogues established in his texts with french writers and philosophers. In addition also, this work brings a debate about the translation and the anthology as places of rewriting, something that is important when we think about Ponges reception in Brazil. Because it is a commented translation, we bring as well a discussion on the possible types of notes in this kind of practice.
