A critical analysis of the role of translation in lexicography with reference to English-Tshivenda bilingual dictionariesNthambeleni, Mashudu January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.) --University of Limpopo, 2016. / Lack of properly translated Tshivenḓa-English dictionaries is a great challenge to dictionary users. In an attempt to address this challenge or problem, linguistic approach has been employed in this study, which was conducted in Vhembe District in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. This study critically analyses the role of translation in lexicography with special reference to selected Tshivenḓa-/English bilingual dictionaries. The selected dictionaries are: Tshikota’s (2006) Tshivenḓa/English Ṱhalusamaipfi Dictionary and Van Warmelo’s (1989) Venḓa Dictionary.
The aim of this study was to examine the role of translation in lexicography with special reference to Tshivenḓa-English dictionaries. This study utilised a qualitative technique to collect the data and interviews were conducted with lexicographers, university lecturers, language practitioners, Tshivenḓa grade 12 educators and court interpreters. Data were analysed based on different answers from different questions posed to different respondents. The study showed that people who compile dictionaries and do translation, do not have proper background in translation. In addition, some of the people are not fluent in both the source and the target languages.
It is recommended that in order to produce user-friendly dictionaries, compilers and translators should get a proper training in translation. In addition, translators should be fluent in both the source and target languages. Finally, school books (including prescribed and content books), should be translated in order to provide effective teaching and learning.

He Do the Orlando Furioso in Different Voices: Ariosto’s Ventriloquizing Presence in English TranslationReid, Joshua 19 October 2016 (has links)
One of Ariosto’s signature narrative features in the Orlando furioso is the use of personae—such as the Inkeeper in Canto 28—to tell stories. These narrator stand-ins allow for Ariosto to displace unsavory perspectives via narrative ventriloquism, where the teller is condemned while the scandalous tale is still allowed to be told. This paper explores how English translators have adapted Ariosto’s use of narrative personae in their translations of the Orlando furioso, exploiting these voices in their translations for sociopolitical ends. In some instances, Ariosto himself becomes a ventriloquized presence in the translations, a source author persona who voices the translator’s projected misogynistic or salacious content.

Translation Issues in Modern Chinese Literature: Viewpoint, Fate and Metaphor in Xia Shang's "The Finger-Guessing Game"Heinrichs, Jonathan 29 October 2019 (has links)
The Finger-Guessing Game is a novel with many layers of themes, characterization, and metaphor, and conveying all of these varied aspects requires a detailed, careful approach to translation. With this thesis I aim to show that strictly adhering to a singular translation method, such as “word-for-word” or “sense-for-sense,” will produce unsatisfactory results at certain points within the novel. This is accomplished by an overview of several different unique aspects of the writing style of this novel, viewpoint, the theme of fate, and the use of idioms and metaphors. Following this will be an analysis of these aspects’ functions within the novel, and how to best translate them to retain their original meaning. In the end, I advocate for a case-by-case approach to the translation of this novel, wherein each unit of translation is considered individually, and the translator judges how to translate it in the best way possible. Only in this way can the meaning present at all levels in the text, from the themes down to the very language used, be translated in a manner which both reads naturally in English and still carries as much of the original meaning as possible.

Implementing the Exercise is Medicine™ Solution: A Process Evaluation Conducted in a University-Based Healthcare SystemJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Background: Exercise is Medicine (EIM) is a health promotion strategy for addressing physical inactivity in healthcare. However, it is unknown how to successfully implement the processes.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand how implementing EIM influenced provider behaviors in a university-based healthcare system, using a process evaluation.
Methods: A multiple baseline, time series design was used. Providers were allocated to three groups. Group 1 (n=11) was exposed to an electronic medical record (EMR) systems change, EIM-related resources, and EIM training session. Group 2 (n=5) received the EMR change and resources but no training. Group 3 (n=6) was only exposed to the systems change. The study was conducted across three phases. Outcomes included asking about patient physical activity (PA) as a vital sign (PAVS), prescribing PA (ExRx), and providing PA resources or referrals. Patient surveys and EMR data were examined. Time series analysis, chi-square, and logistic regression were used.
Results: Patient survey data revealed the systems change increased patient reports of being asked about PA, χ2(4) = 95.47, p < .001 for all groups. There was a significant effect of training and resource dissemination on patients receiving PA advice, χ2(4) = 36.25, p < .001. Patients receiving PA advice was greater during phase 2 (OR = 4.7, 95% CI = 2.0-11.0) and phase 3 (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.2-7.4). Increases were also observed in EMR data for PAVS, χ2(2) = 29.27, p <. 001 during implementation for all groups. Increases in PA advice χ2(2) = 140.90, p < .001 occurred among trained providers only. No statistically significant change was observed for ExRx, PA resources or PA referrals. However, visual analysis showed an upwards trend among trained providers.
Conclusions: An EMR systems change is effective for increasing the collection of the PAVS. Training and resources may influence provider behavior but training alone increased provider documentation. The low levels of documented outcomes for PA advice, ExRx, resources, or referrals may be due to the limitations of the EMR system. This approach was effective for examining the EIM Solution and scaled-up, longer trials may yield more robust results. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Exercise and Nutritional Sciences 2019

Knowledge Translation Across Boundaries: Converting Scholarly Knowledge to Research Highlights for Management PractitionersRen, Yi January 2019 (has links)

Bartunek / This dissertation examines the knowledge translation from one professional community to another that has distinct priorities, values, and commutation styles: management academia to practice. More specifically, I examined knowledge translation in the form of converting peer-reviewed management research papers into practitioner-oriented research highlights. Drawing from archival and interview data, I conducted three interrelated empirical studies to investigate this phenomenon. In the first study, using the framework of Gatekeeping Theory (Lewin, 1947; Shoemaker, 1991), I examine the process and norms of how knowledge translators select from the vast amount of management research and decide which ones deserve to be translated toward practitioners. In the second study, I build on Communication Accommodation Theory (Giles, Coupland, & Coupland, 1991) to examine the processes, underlying motivations, and translation strategies of how knowledge translators conduct the knowledge conversion, especially how they manage the often conflicting demands between source knowledge producers and recipients of translated knowledge. In the third study, drawing on insights from the cross-cultural psychology literature, I examine how knowledge translators’ strategies may differ systematically when they write in two different languages toward audiences in two different cultures. The subtitling tasks and project were carried out with Ooona, an online subtitling software, and as part of an optional course on gender and sexuality at an undergraduate university program in Translation. The data collected are based on the Spanish subtitles produced by the students from audiovisual content originally in English, as well as on questionnaires and reports that they completed after subtitling. The results reveal how cloud-based subtitling software is a useful tool for students to position themselves regarding online video content online, as well as how the audiovisual representation of queer characters allows students to reflect on aspects of the gender/sex system when they must transfer linguistic content that is rooted in different socio-cultural systems.
