Eduardo Kac: uma poética da criação / Eduardo Kac: a poetic of creation

Esta dissertação aborda a poética do artista multimídia Eduardo Kac, conhecido internacionalmente por suas obras inovadoras e polêmicas e pela atuação como professor, crítico e pesquisador de modalidades artísticas contemporâneas que envolvem o uso das novas tecnologias, incluindo algumas criadas por ele mesmo, como é o caso da holopoesia, da arte da telepresença e biotelemática e da arte transgênica. Consideramos a idéia da criação presente nos trabalhos, principalmente as relações entre esta e uma concepção mística de linguagem, baseada em conceitos e técnicas da Cabala judaica. A partir das obras de arte transgênica que compõem sua Trilogia da Criação: Gênesis (1999), GFP-Bunny (2000) e O Oitavo Dia (2001), buscamos iluminar as referências e procedimentos criativos que conectam o corpo de conhecimento bastante antigo e tradicional (a Cabala) com a reflexão sobre a criação e suas relações com a linguagem, na tradição cabalística e na arte contemporânea / This dissertation approaches the poetics of the multimedia artist Eduardo Kac, internationally known for his innovative and controversial works and for his performance as a professor, critic and researcher of contemporary artistic modalities that involve the use of new technologies, including some that were developed by himself, such as the holopoetry, the telepresence and biotelematic art and the transgenic art. We consider that the idea of creation in his works, mainly the relationship between this creation and a mystical conception of language, is based on concepts and techniques of the Jewish Kabbalah. By analyzing the transgenic art works that compose the Creation Trilogy: Genesis (1999), GFPBunny (2000) e The Eighth Day (2001), we intend to highlight the references and creative procedures that connect the ancient and traditional structure of knowledge (the Kabbalah) with the analysis of creation and its relationship with language in the kabbalistic tradition and contemporary art.

This thesis is concerned with the depiction of working-class Dublin in Roddy Doyle's first three novels, The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van, known as The Barrytown Trilogy. The first part of the thesis provides a short overview of Doyle's early work in the context of modern Irish fiction with a focus on working-class protagonists and outlines Ireland's and specifically Dublin's cultural and economic background in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. The second part is based on a comparative analysis of the three books in which the author celebrates everyday life in Barrytown, a fictitious neighbourhood in the north of Dublin, through the eyes of a typical working-class family. One section is also dedicated to the language of the trilogy used as a means of achieving greater authenticity. Playing with the Third Reich: Conceptual Relocation from Nazi Film to WWII Game : An Experiment to measure Filmic concepts in Digital Games

Film produced by Nazi Germany has been a classic that has drawn scholars from a wide range of academic disciplines as well as innumerable cineastes from various cultural backgrounds. The simultaneous rise in the number of players acting as observers and operators in digital games with a WWII theme has drawn recent scholarly attention since it is thought that this pattern is contributing to players' hazy understanding of historical events. In order to close the gap from earlier studies that there is no future perspective for these concepts refined from Nazi films, nor relevance to films in the field of Game Studies, I proposed a new connection between Nazi films and WWII games based on the conceptual relocation of Fascist Aesthetic, Futuristic Utopianism, and Steel-like Romanticism. In this relocation, Fascist Aesthetic has kept its elements from Leni Riefenstahl's propaganda films but expanded to the pursuit of death and violence in the Wolfenstein series (WWII FPS games), Futuristic Utopianism in Piel's science fiction trilogy derived from the passion for technology of the Weimar period, his original designs in the Sci-fi trilogy have proved to be an inspiration for WWII games. In Walter Ruttmann's industrial films, steel-like romanticism was portrayed as a romantic sensation from the production of large-scale, intricate weapons by dedicated German workers to achieve the reactionary modernism, but in WWII simulation games, it evolved into a nostalgia for the weapons built by the Reich. As a result of this change, a trustworthy commemoration of the Third Reich is vanishing from visual culture and its grim past has been changed by simulation.

Transformational Leadership in the Life and Works of C.S. Lewis

The author of this study explored the works of C.S. Lewis as well as memoirs and scholarship concerning his work to illustrate his transformational leadership. Works reviewed included Lewis's fiction, such as his science fiction trilogy and his children's series, The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as his works of nonfiction, such as essays that addressed social issues. The secondary aim for the author of this study was to determine whether the transformational qualities Lewis exhibited also existed in his characters. Transformational leadership served as the conceptual framework for the descriptive explanatory qualitative design. Essentially the study analyzed the primary works of Lewis and subsequent scholarship through the lens of transformational leadership. Data collected included document review, interviews with Lewis scholars, and observations. Synthesis of the data revealed that Lewis possessed the 4 qualities of transformational leadership established by Bass (1985). Derived from a blended evaluation of scholarship, observational data, and interview responses, findings indicated that Lewis exhibited the 4 qualities of transformational leadership: Idealized influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individual Consideration. In addition, Lewis created a transformational leader in Aslan from The Chronicles of Narnia and depicted pseudotransformational leadership in both his science fiction trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia. The author of this study explored a contextual and historical view of Lewis as a veteran of World War I and a voice of hope during World War II. During the period pseudotransformational leadership existed in the reality of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime and echoed in the literature of Lewis in the N.I.C.E. organization from the science fiction trilogy and Shift from The Chronicles of Narnia. Recommendations for further study encourage future scholars to expand the roster of transformational leaders to include artists and thinkers and to examine various aspects of Lewis yet needing research.

This is a study ofD.RZ. Ntuli's radio trilogy: Isivumelwano, IsivumelwanoEsisha and Ngenxa Yesivumelwano. Since the term trilogy is not a familiar concept in Zulu literary studies, this is an attempt to fill that void. This thesis provides some new insight into this concept, while also devising a practical method for the analysis of the radio trilogy. Chapter one outlines the aim of the study, scope of the study and the definition of some terms. This is followed by explaining the method of research and theories on radio serial dramas. There is also a discussion of the historical background in the development of Zulu radio serial drama and Ntuli's position and contribution to it. Finally, there is a review of previous research studies in Aincan Languages on radio drama. In chapter two plot structure of a radio trilogy is discussed. Theories of drama trilogy by trilogists like Hitchcock, Bakhtin, Asimov and Norris are discussed in detail. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of the plot structures of Isivumelwano, Jsivumelwano Esisha and Ngenxa Yesivumelwano. Chapter three deals with the characterization of radio trilogy. It distinguishes between the actors and characters. Different methods of character portrayal are investigated. Chapter four deals with perspectives on the theme of the radio trilogy. Types of themes are dealt with. Chapter five discusses the dialogue in radio trilogy. It deals with the differences between a dialogue, duologue and monologue, and explains the functions fulfilled by dramatic utterances and dialogue. Lastly a nature of dialogue as a characteristic of the dramatic action is discussed. Chapter six concentrates on the style of radio trilogy. Elements and different types of styles are discussed. Kinds of images, figurative language, proverbs, idioms, biblical allusions and various influences are discussed in detail. Chapter seven concludes by summarizing the main finding ofthis study, and giving observations about the quality ofNtuli's contribution to radio drama trilogy. lt also explores some possibilities regarding future studies on Ntuli's radio trilogy. / African Languages / D. They develop their own system of religion and mythology, social conventions, language and arts, observing a life that can make both the environment and human beings prosperous. But Aboriginals are driven to extinction by the White who intend to possess their land. Because of large scale of massacres and diseases, both the number of Aboriginal population and their culture are endangered. Indigenous Australians become the marginalized minority in Australian society. Therefore, with the reference to Mikhail Bakhtin’s idea of the chronotope, Pierre Nora’s concept of memory and related Aboriginal culture, this thesis aims to discuss that Jack Davis, in The First Born trilogy, presents the oppression of White Australian society to Aboriginal people and displays Aboriginals’ persistence in survival through the reconstruction of Aboriginal memory and the empowerment of Aboriginality. Chapter One includes the general historical background of the contact between the White and Aboriginals, the introduction to Jack Davis and his plays, and the criticism on Davis’s trilogy. In Chapter Two, I take advantage of Bakhtin’s idea of the chronotope to discuss the severe social environment of indigenous Australians who are oppressed by the White Australian government and the social consequences of Aboriginals’ disadvantaged position in society. Chapter Three aims to utilize Pierre Nora’s concept of memory to analyze that Davis, through stories, dances, and dream visions, creates lieux de mémoire to preserve Aboriginal memory. Chapter Four concentrates on the empowerment of Aboriginality, which offers a subversive force for Aboriginals to fight against the White persecution and have their voice heard. Chapter Five is the concluding chapter to wrap up these three plays.

IN ENGLISH The primary concern of this thesis is to explore the instances of incorporation of media-specific elements extracted and translated from radio and cinema into Samuel Beckett's late prose. The analysis of the texts forming Beckett's Nohow On trilogy is based on the investigation of the two modes of perception - the aural and the visual - and is realised through the close reading of Company, Ill Seen Ill Said, and Wostward Ho in the context of media and film theory and practice. The chief premise is that the formal translations among the print and non-print media in Beckett's work are conditioned by the author's interest in, and theoretical and practical familiarity with, radio, television, and cinematography. The discussion is thus supported by biographical and bibliographical framework, and Beckett's familiarity with the specificities of broadcast media and cinema is considered in their direct relation to the progressive 'technologisation' of his fiction of the 1980s. The thesis outlines the origins and transformations of the motif of voice as one of Beckett's chief fictional concerns, and explores the texts' practical and notional borrowings from the field of cinematography to elucidate the way in which they are designed to simulate perceptual experiences.
