Les séries télévisées de fiction suscitent depuis quelques années un intérêt sans précédent dans leur histoire, qui amène à s’interroger sur le sens pris par cette forme de fiction. Mais, à cette question de la signification de l’objet, s’ajoute celle de la méthode permettant d’y répondre. Récits, fictions, les séries sont aussi des produits commerciaux et industriels et, de ce fait, fortement déterminées par leurs contextes de production et de réception.Depuis 1996 et la dérégulation des télécommunications aux Etats-Unis, le paysage médiatique et le marché télévisuel, américains puis internationaux, ont connu d’importants bouleversements économiques et technologiques dont une des conséquences a été l’adoption de stratégies d’expansion et de branding des programmes, qui prennent un tour inédit et auxquelles les séries n’échappent pas.Adaptées, dérivées, reprises, les séries, notamment dramatiques, se franchisent, faisant apparaître alors ce qui constitue une spécificité de la création sérielle, le format. Forme minimale de la fiction, le format consiste en une présentation écrite qui en fixe les constituants fondamentaux permettant non seulement sa sérialisation mais aussi sa distribution.A partir de formats et de franchises de séries dramatiques américaines de la décennie initiée à 1996, cette thèse se propose d’examiner en quoi le format pourrait contribuer à enrichir l’étude des séries télévisées dans une perspective autant théorique qu’interprétative. / Since the beginning of the 2000s, television series arouse an unheard-of interest in their history, which brings to question the sense of this kind of fiction. But, in this issue of the meaning of the object, is also the one of the method to answer it.Narratives and fictions, series are also commercial and industrial products and, therefore, strongly determined by their contexts of production and reception. Since 1996 and the deregulation of telecommunications in the United States, american then international media landscapes and markets have known important economic and technological upheavals which led to new strategies of expansion and branding of the programs, in an unprecedented tourAdapted, spun off, remade, dramatic series lead to franchises, revealing then what establishes a specificity of the serial creation : the format. The television format is a written presentation which sets the fundamental core of the fiction, allowing not only serialization but also its distribution.Studying formats and franchises of American dramatic series of the decade introduced in 1996, this thesis examines how the television format could contribute to enrich the study of television series in a theoretical as well as in an interpretative objective.

I denna uppsats analyseras spelen Howling Dogs och 16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonalds ur ett narratologiskt perspektiv. Huvuddelen av analysen fokuserar på hur hypertextens mediala förhållanden påverkar relationen mellan spelaren och narrativet samt på förhållandet mellan berättare och lyssnarinstans. Analysen baserar sig på metoder med utgångspunkt i possible worlds theory, formulerat av Alice Bell. Uppsatsen exemplifierar hur man går till väga i analys av texter med ett starkt deiktiskt förhållande mellan texten och läsaren. Syftet är att undersöka existerande metoder och att förbättra dem, tillika en, möjligtvis naiv, förhoppning om att komma ett steg närmare ett större litteraturvetenskapligt intresse gällande vad spel kan tillföra litteraturvetenskapen. / This essay contains narratological analyses of the games Howling Dogs and 16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonalds. The analyses are focused on the hypertext’s medial impact on the relations between user and narrative as well as narrator and narratee. The work is based on methods using possible worlds theory, created by theorists such as Alice Bell. A main purpose here is to further exemplify how to analyze texts having a deictic effect between themselves self and their readers. The purpose here is thus to test existing methods and further develop them. This purpose is also motivated by a, possibly naïve, hope of getting one step closer to a wider acknowledgement of how games can contribute to the subject of literature.

This dissertation is a text analysis of the short novel Carmilla (1872) by the Irish ghost story-author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. It is a close reading analysis where I apply a queer theoretical perspective using Mia Franck’s model to analyze different silence practices in Carmilla. I focus on the female vampire Carmilla and her companion Laura and how they are portrayed in this short novel. I will ask the questions: do the characters Carmilla and Laura show a non-heterosexual relationship, passion and desire? How do they depart from the gender norm and can they be seen as characters who deviate from what society considers ‘normal’ behaviour? And can Carmilla and Laura’s relationship be seen as an example of silenced homosexuality and in what way is it expressed? Carmilla and Laura’s behaviour can certainly be described as queer and it is effective to examine the novella using silence practices through a queer perspective. Many of the practices are written silences. Mostly, its things that the reader realizes before the storyteller Laura does herself. They reveal numerous oddities in the story, taking the form of narrative, camouflaged, performative, ritualized and existential silences. Prominent examples are the way Carmilla hides both her vampiric and lesbian sides which Laura is repelled at in addition to her own lustful and passionate emotions. As a future teacher, one of my most important jobs will be to educate my pupils about democratic values and that all kinds of discrimination should be discouraged. An essay of this sort is one way to educate them in how gender and sexuality can be seen from historical, political and cultural perspectives.

The aim of this research is to demonstrate how the vampires presented by Rice are humanized. It begins with a historical study about vampires, both legendary and literary ones, then there is a study about the life and work of the American writer as well as a survey of the differences between the vampires from Rice and others described in the literature, including the icon of the genre: Dracula, by Bram Stoker. The analysis still continues with some theoretical notes on the fantastic genre, including concepts about Todorov, Ceserani, among others. There is also an analysis of the main characters: the vampire Louis who denies his vampiric nature; the vampire Lestat who also fights against human problems; Claudia, the vampire kid, who does not accept her condition as a woman stuck in a child s body; the vampire Armand, one of the oldest vampires in the world that looks for human peace. There is also an analysis of a human character, a supposed journalist, who listens to the story of mortal and immortal life of the vampire Louis. The analysis also covers the time and space in the narrative and its relationship with the fantastic genre, as well as some differences between the book written in 1976 and the film released in 1994, a big hit, reference for many other vampire movies. / Esta dissertação tem por objetivo analisar o romance Interview with the Vampire de Anne Rice que é o primeiro livro dos dez que constituem suas Crônicas Vampirescas . Pretende-se com esta pesquisa demonstrar como os vampiros apresentados por Rice são humanizados. Inicia-se com um estudo histórico sobre os vampiros, tanto lendários quanto literários, depois há um estudo sobre a vida e obra da escritora norte-americana bem como um levantamento das diferenças entre os vampiros de Rice e outros descritos na literatura, entre os quais o ícone do gênero: Drácula, de Bram Stoker. A análise continua ainda com alguns apontamentos teóricos sobre o gênero fantástico, incluindo conceitos de Todorov, Ceserani, entre outros. Screaming, flying, and laughing: magical feminism's witches in contemporary film, television, and novels

This project argues that there is a previously unnamed canon of literature called Magical Feminism which exists across many current popular (even lowbrow) genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, so-called realistic literature, and contemporary television and film. I define Magical Feminism as a genre quite similar to Magical Realism, but assert that its main political thrust is to model a feminist agency for its readers. To define this genre, I closely-read the image of the female magic user as one of the most important Magical Feminist metaphors. I argue that the female magic user–commonly called the witch, but also labeled priestess, mistress, shaman, mambo, healer, midwife– is a metaphor for female unruliness and disruption to patriarchy and as such, is usually portrayed as evil and deserving of punishment. I assert that many (although not all) of the popular texts this genre includes are overlooked or ignored by the academy, and thus, that an important focus for contemporary feminism is missed. When the texts are noticed by parts of the academy, they are mostly considered popular culture novelty acts, not serious political genres. As part of my argument, I analyze third wave feminism’s attempt to reconcile traits previously considered less than feminist, such as the domestic. I also deconstruct the popular media’s negative portrayal of contemporary feminism and the resulting reluctance for many young women to identify themselves as feminist. I also argue that this reluctance goes hand in hand with a growing attempt to seek new models for empowering female epistemologies. My assertion is that these texts are the classrooms where many readers learn their feminism. Finally, I list a short bibliography as a way of defining canon of texts that should be considered Magical Feminist.

The Role of Hepcidin in Regulation of Iron Balance in Bats

Iron storage disease is a significant cause of liver disease and mortality in captive Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus). The nature of the susceptibility in this and other captive exotic species to iron storage disease is not clear. Hepcidin, a key iron regulatory hormone, is involved in the regulation of iron absorption in humans and other mammalian species and a deficiency in hepcidin has been associated with a number of genetic mutations resulting in hemochromatosis in humans. The objectives of this thesis were to identify whether there is a functional mutation in the hepcidin gene in the Egyptian fruit bat that may increase the susceptibility of this species to iron storage disease, and whether there is a functional deficiency in hepcidin gene expression in the Egyptian fruit bat in response to iron challenge. We compared the coding region of the hepcidin gene amongst several species of bats and investigated hepcidin response to intramuscular injection of iron dextran amongst three species of bats with variable susceptibility to iron storage disease; the Egyptian fruit bat, the straw-colored fruit bat (Eidolon helvum), and the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus). While a number of genetic differences were identified amongst species, a functional mutation that could result in decreased hepcidin activity was not identified in the Egyptian fruit bat. Bats exhibited marked variation in hepcidin gene expression, with the highest level of hepcidin response to iron challenge in the common vampire bat. While the Egyptian fruit bat exhibited significant hepcidin response to iron challenge, the magnitude of response was lower than that in the common vampire bat and lower than expected based on findings in healthy humans. The straw-colored fruit bat did not exhibit any hepcidin response despite a significant increase in iron stores, which suggests this species may have evolved an alternate mechanism for coping with excessive iron or may be more susceptible to iron overload than previously recognized. / Toronto Zoo Scholarship Fund

Vampires in the sunburnt country : adapting vampire Gothic to the Australian landscape

I first became enamoured with vampire Gothic after reading Bram Stoker's Dracula in high school, but gradually became dissatisfied with the Australian adaptations of the sub-genre. In looking for examples of Australian vampire Gothic, a survey of more than 50 short stories, 23 novels and five movies made by Australians reveals fewer than half were set in an identifiably Australian setting. Even fewer make use of three key, landscape-related tropes of vampire Gothic - darkness, earth and ruins. Why are so few Australian vampire stories set in Australia? In what ways can the metaphorical elements of vampire Gothic be applied to the Sunburnt Country? This paper seeks to answer these questions by examining examples of Australian vampire narratives, including film. Particular attention is given to Mudrooroo's Master of the Ghost Dreaming series which, more than any other Australian novel, succeeds in manipulating and subverting the tropes of vampire Gothic. The process of adaptation of vampire Gothic to the Australian environment, both natural and man-made, is also a core concern of my own novel, Vampires' Bane, which uses earth, darkness and a modern permutation of ruins to explore its metaphorical intentions. Through examining previous works and through my own creative process, Vampires' Bane, I argue that Australia's growing urbanisation can be juxtaposed against the vampire-hostile natural environment to enhance the tropes of vampire Gothic, and make Australia a suitable home for narratives that explore the ongoing evolution of Count Dracula and his many-faceted descendants.

Interagimos também com textos que relacionam a representação social da mulher ligada à figura mitológica do vampiro – representação essa diretamente associadas às transformações emocionais que tratam do embate primitivo do bem vs. o mal. / The aim of this study was to make a comparative analysis focusing on the female literary representations present in two English novels. Through the study of the novels Carmilla (1872), by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, and Sabella (1980), by Tanith Lee, we examined the main common characteristics from female characters and their attitudes within the society to which they belong, and with the purpose of finding some possible points leading to a literary female identity construction. From a deep contact with the title-characters Carmilla and Sabella – both female vampires and also representatives of distinct English literary fiction periods – we depict the social-historical contexts to which each author belongs. The analysis is based on some feminist theories developed and propagated along of the 70’s and the 80’s, which discuss the new places occupied by women in social contexts so far known as “banned”, like out-of-house works, politics and sexuality. We also interact with texts related to social female representations linked to the mythological vampire figure – a kind of representation directly associated to some emotional transformations dealing with the primitive opposition between good vs. evil.

The topic of this diploma thesis is the development of the character of vampire and its portrayal in literature for children and youth. The thesis focuses on the analysis of five literary works for children and youth written in German language, which portrays the character of a vampire as a main protagonist and its many changes and development. The analysed works are Der kleine Vampir by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg, Das Vamperl by Renate Welsch, Der Spinat Vampir by Gudrun Pausenwang, Pozor, přilétá Molly! by Dagmar H. Mueller a Drákula a já by Andreas Schlütera. The main aim of this thesis is to answer the question of the type of transformation has the character of vampire undergone in the literature for children and youth. Its main goal is not to fully cover all available works in the genre, but to choose the most representative ones which show the different features. The analysis of the change is based on the characteristic of the characters and its goal is to show us the development of the character in contrast to the traditional vampire character. The archetype was established upon three works of literature: The Vampyre by John Polidori, Carmilla by L.S Le Fanu and Dracula by Bram Stoker.
