Bayesian Estimation of Surface Information from Radar Images

Hartt, Keith David 01 May 1993 (has links)
The dissertation presents a method for deriving the shape of a surface from a radar image of the surface. An appropriate model of radar image formation is derived from physical principles. A Bayesian formulation of the inversion problem is developed upon which a computational strategy is based. Theoretical results on random surfaces relevant to the prior distribution are presented, and convergence and optimality properties of a new sampling algorithm are described. The technique is applied to Magellan data of Venus.

Did I shave for this?

Bokfors, Marie, Vinderå, Thilde January 2021 (has links)

A Comprehensive Entry, Descent, Landing, and Locomotion (EDLL) Vehicle for Planetary Exploration

Schroeder, Kevin Kent 26 August 2017 (has links)
The 2012 Decadal Survey has stated that there is a critical role for a Venus In-situ Explore (VISE) missions to a variety of important sites, specifically the Tessera terrain. This work aims to answer the Decadal Survey's call by developing a new comprehensive Entry, Descent, Landing, and Locomotion (EDLL) vehicle for in-situ exploration of Venus, especially in the Tessera regions. TANDEM, the Tension Adjustable Network for Deploying Entry Membrane, is a new planetary probe concept in which all of EDLL is achieved by a single multifunctional tensegrity structure. The concept uses same fundamental concept as the ADEPT (Adaptable Deployable Entry and Placement Technology) deployable heat shield but replaces the standard internal structure with the structure from the tensegrity-actuated rover to provide a combined aeroshell and rover design. The tensegrity system implemented by TANDEM reduces the mass of the overall system while enabling surface locomotion and mitigating risk associated with landing in the rough terrain of Venus's Tessera regions, which is otherwise nearly inaccessible to surface missions. TANDEM was compared to other state-of-the-art lander designs for an in-situ mission to Venus. It was shown that TANDEM provides the same scientific experimentation capabilities that were proposed for the VITaL mission, with a combined mass reduction for the aeroshell and lander of 52% (1445 kg), while eliminating the identified risks associated with entry loads and very rough terrain. Additionally, TANDEM provides locomotion when on the surface as well as a host of other maneuvers during entry and descent, which was not present in the VITaL design. Based on its unique multifunctional infrastructure and excellent crashworthiness for impact on rough surfaces, TANDEM presents a robust system to address some of the Decadal Survey's most pressing questions about Venus. / Ph. Metamorfoses de Venus na poesia de Ovídio / Metamorphosis of Venus in Ovid¿s poetry

Orosco, Gabriela Strafacci, 1984- 11 July 2011 (has links)
Orientador: Isabella Tardin Cardoso / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-19T11:37:47Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Orosco_GabrielaStrafacci_M.pdf: 1499304 bytes, checksum: 8dcba777729471fd896b80f8ef7a63bc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011 / Resumo: O interesse deste estudo é observar a presença da deusa romana Vênus, cujo principal atributo é o amor, em obras do poeta romano Públio Ovídio Nasão (43 a. C - 17 / 18 d. This study has as a central interest observing the presence of the Roman goddess Venus, whose main attribute is love, in Publius Ovidius Naso?s work (43 B. C - 17 / 18 A. D.), more specifically in the poems Remedia Amoris (Remedies for Love) and in selected passages of Metamorphoseon Libri (Metamorphoses). Throught the comparison among the latin passages pertaincing to both ovidian works, it is noticed that the goddess presence - either metonymically (for instance, as a synonymous for the noun "love") or as a character of amorous adventures or misadventures - comprises much of the ovidian poetry. In the didactic poem Remedia Amoris, for example, Venus is frequently related to unhappy love narratives. In Remedia the lyric self, purposing the cure for love, mentions the goddess as a reference to unlucky love stories. Observing in the Metamorphoses how the goddess of love participates as a mythical character, helps to perceive the allusion to mythological episodes that also takes part in Remedia Amoris. The respective excerpts of Metamorphoses (namely Met. IV 169-189, X 298-739 e XIV 441-608) that are mentioned in Remedia Amoris compose the corpus of our study. The translation of the selected passages of Metamorphoses, as well as a comparison with their mention in Remedia amoris, is the starting point for the analysis. The study aims also to modestly contribute for the reflection on the conception of the love feeling constituted in Ovid, mainly the idea of love as a disease / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística

Inversion des spectres infrarouges enregistrés par l'instrument SOIR à bord de la sonde Venus Express / Inversion of the infrared spectra recorded by the SOIR instrument on board Venus Express

Mahieux, Arnaud 03 March 2011 (has links)
In terms of size and mass, they are indeed very similar, but the Venus atmosphere is much thicker and active. The altitude region extending from 70 km to 180~km is studied in this thesis, namely the mesosphere and the lower thermosphere.<p><p>SOIR, which stands for Solar Occultation in the InfraRed, is a Russian / French / Belgian instrument flying on board of the Venus Express (VEX) spacecraft of the European Space Agency. The diffracting device of SOIR is an echelle grating. The wavenumber region studied ranges from 2200 cm-1 to 4400 cm-1, or 4.3 µm to 2.2 µm in wavelength. The diffraction orders used with SOIR vary from 101 to 194. To select the required echelle grating diffraction order, an Acousto-Optical Tunable Filter - AOTF - is located after the entrance slit of the instrument. The instrument resolution varies from 0.13 to 0.24 cm-1.<p><p>SOIR was developed in a very short time. Thus, virtually all the calibrations had to be made in-flight. These concern the echelle grating (exact Blaze angle computation, Blaze function), the detector (pixel-to-pixel non-uniformity, spectral sensitivity curve, pixel-to-wavenumber relationship, instrument resolution, spectral sampling interval, signal-to-noise ratio, thermal background) and the AOTF (wavenumber to AOTF frequency relation, AOTF transfer function). The procedure for and the computation of these calibrations are described in this work, as well as the instrument characteristics.<p><p>A spectral inversion algorithm was developed specifically for the SOIR measurement technique: the solar occultation. The onion peeling method is implemented using the Optimal Estimation Method. It allows the inversion of the spectral data in one go, and also the enhancement of some instrumental characteristics. The algorithm variables are the densities of the species absorbing in the diffraction order, the temperature of the atmosphere under study, the spectral background parameters, that allow the determination of the Venus aerosols characteristics, the Doppler shift (mainly linked to the shift induced by the satellite displacement), and the improvement of some instrumental calibrations. A sensitivity study on the algorithm parameters is also presented, and the instrumental systematic errors are investigated.<p><p>Vertical profiles of CO2, CO, H2O, HDO, SO2, H2SO4, HCl and HF are derived from the spectra measured during the first 4 mission years. Upper limits on OCS, H2CO, O3 and CH4 have also been calculated. <p><p>We focus on the carbon dioxide results in the present study. A selection of vertical profiles extending from 70 km to 180 km are analyzed in details. They are compared to the hydrostatic profiles, and propositions concerning the terminators' dynamics are formulated.<p> / Doctorat en Sciences de l'ingénieur / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Les récepteurs venus kinase (VKRs) de schistosoma mansoni : étude des voies de signalisation de SmVKR1 et rôle de la protéine adaptatrice SmShb / Schistosoma mansoni venus kinase receptors (VKRs) : SmVKR1 signaling pathways and role of the adaptor protein SmShb

Morel, Marion 23 March 2016 (has links)
Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by trematode flatworm species belonging to the genus Schistosoma. Responsible for about 300,000 deaths per year, the disease is mainly due to the high fertility of the worms and to encystment of eggs in host tissues. In order to fight against schistosomiasis, a single drug (Praziquantel) is efficient and massively distributed in endemic areas. To deal with the emergence of resistance to Praziquantel, one alternative is to consider the design of molecules that target parasite reproduction.Venus Kinase Receptors (VKRs) constitute an invertebrate Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (RTK) family initially discovered in the parasite Schistosoma mansoni. VKRs are atypical RTKs formed by an extracellular Venus Fly Trap (VFT) ligand binding domain associated via a transmembrane domain with an intracellular tyrosine kinase (TK) domain. Two VKRs are expressed in S. mansoni: SmVKR1 and SmVKR2. They both activate Erk, Akt and JNK signaling pathways and act on the parasite reproduction. As they are absent from the human genome and as they have potential roles in the modulation of reproductive processes and development of parasites, SmVKRs appear as attractive targets to fight schistosomiasis. The first part of my thesis work sets known data concerning the role of RTKs in schistosome reproduction. Here, we show that the catalytic domains are conserved across various RTKs and we open the perspective to design drugs which could inhibit several RTKs at the same time to control egg laying by schistosomes. The second part of my work describes the importance of using an alternative strategy of inhibiting downstream partners of RTKs. By screening a kinase inhibitor library, we defined the Akt pathway components as potential targets to fight schistosomiasis. Nanomolar doses of Akt inhibitors can inhibit schistosome pairing and egg laying. In the last part, we present the specific interaction of the adaptor protein SmShb with the phosphorylated form of SmVKR1. This binding occurs between the SH2 domain of SmShb and a phosphotyrosine residue (pY979) located in the juxtamembrane region of the receptor. That interaction leads to the phosphorylation of SmShb and promotes the signal of SmVKR1 towards a JNK pathway. In situ hybridization experiments highlighted that SmShb and Smvkr1 transcripts were both located in mature oocytes and testes of adult worms. RNA interference experiments using double-stranded RNA targeting SmShb led to an accumulation of mature sperm in testes of male worms. Finally, a yeast three hybrid screening, using SmShb phosphorylated by SmVKR1 as prey, allowed us to identify various protein partners. Taking advantage of previous results, we focused on two partners and confirmed their interaction with SmShb. 1) RhoU GTPase which has potential functions in JNK signalling and cytoskeleton dynamic. 2) The dynein light chain TcTex-1, with potential role in sperm motility. Altogether, this results argue for a potential role of SmShb in the regulation of the SmVKR1 activity by forming a multiprotein complex including proteins with various roles in cytoskeleton reorganization.

It Shaves You Closer, So That You Can Get Closer To The Beauty Standard : En multimodal kritisk diskursanalys av Gillette Venus reklamfilmer / It Shaves You Closer, So That You Can Get Closer To The Beauty Standard : A multimodal critical discourse analysis of Gillette Venus commercials

Wahlqvist, Alicia January 2021 (has links)
My Way. Stories: Ofey” (2021). / The following study aims to qualitatively examine commercials by the brand Gillette Venus, through a multimodal critical discourse analysis. The chosen material is analysed on two levels: denotation and connotation. The purpose of the study is to discursively analyse how women's body hair is discursively constructed and if the discourses have evolved over time. The intention of the study is to contribute with knowledge regarding how women’s body hair is portrayed in commercials and highlight the underlying ideology behind the portrayal. The study will examine four commercials by Gillette Venus: “Gillette Venus Disposable Razor” (2005), “Venus Embrace” (2010), “#UseYourAnd” (2015) and “My Skin. My Way. Stories: Ofey” (2021). In order to achieve the purpose of the study, the analysis uses the theoretical framework of gender performativity, gender norms and gender in advertising. The results of the study show that the way in which Gillette Venus constructs women's body hair has changed partly, as a result of the change from third wave feminism to the fourth wave of feminism in the early 2010s. Furthermore, the study also concludes that Gillette Venus continues to portray a traditional view on women's body hair, in that they do not show it nor mention it in their respective commercials. However, the portrayed contextualisation as to why women should shave does change. Thus, the prominent conclusion of the study is that women’s body hair continues to be portrayed in Gillette Venus commercials as something women must get rid of, although the reasoning behind it does change with time.

New women-specific diagnostic modules: the Composite International Diagnostic Interview for Women (CIDI-VENUS)

Martini, Julia, Wittchen, Hans-Ulrich, Soares, Claudio N., Rieder, Amber, Steiner, Meir 15 August 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The World Health Organization-Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI) is a highly structured interview for the assessment of mental disorders, based on the definitions and criteria of the fourth edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Over the past decade it has become evident that the CIDI does not sufficiently address the assessment needs of women. Women are affected by most mental disorders, particularly mood and anxiety disorders, approximately twice as frequently as men. Women-specific disorders, such as Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), psychiatric disorders during pregnancy and postpartum as well as during the perimenopause, menopause and beyond are not addressed by the standard CIDI diagnostic modules. In addition, the CIDI in its current form does not address the potential effect that female reproductive milestones may have on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders in women. Our aim was to develop a new women specific platform (CIDI-VENUS; CIDI-V) to be embedded in the existing CIDI that will address the above mentioned current deficiencies. Guided by a team of experts in the field of Women’s Mental Health from Canada and Germany the following modules were developed: 1) A complete menstrual history and comprehensive contraceptive history with a link to the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool (PSST). 2) A complete perinatal history of pregnancies, miscarriages, terminations, still births, death of a child, with details of current pregnancy including gestation and expected date of confinement, labour history and breastfeeding, history of tobacco, alcohol, and other substance use including prescription drugs during pregnancy and postpartum, a section on specific phobias and on recurrent obsessive/compulsive thoughts/behaviours (OCD) related to the baby with a link to the Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (POCS), as well as a link to the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). 3). A detailed history of use of hormone therapy (e.g. pills, patches, implants, etc.) with a focus on (peri-) menopausal women, differentiating between physical and psychological symptoms with a link to the Menopause Visual Analogue Scales (M-VAS) and to the Greene Climacteric Scale. 4) An iterative module concluding each CIDI section to specify the course of mental disorders during the reproductive stages and menopausal transition. While retaining core diagnostic sections and diagnostic algorithms, the CIDI-V is enriched by women-specific diagnostic modules, providing a wealth of clinically relevant information about women’s mental health, not available anywhere else in our current psychiatric diagnostic instruments.
