In fact, the involvement of people in such actions is increasing. Nevertheless, it has been shown that the volunteer s commitment to the action that he engages in is usually very low. There is a tendency to abandon the action after a period of involvement. The present work seeks to examine the points identified as being of great relevance in volunteering issues, such as unconscious motivations that lead the subject to volunteer actions, the volunteer's low level of commitment, the consequences that can arrive from deviations from a truly altruistic direction and, finally, to discuss the cultural idealization of doing good . This research stems from my experience in a Volunteering Program in a corporate environment, and is based on Freudian texts and others by contemporary authors of psychoanalysis. The text itself is intended as a tool for the elaboration of what my psychoanalytic listening has produced in four years as supervisor of more than eighty volunteers in the program called Social Mentoring, emphasizing how their work evolved, from the point of view of the psychoanalytic supervision taking place there. Thus, this dissertation supports the possibility of the contribution of psychoanalytic knowledge to Volunteering actions / As ações voluntárias têm sido largamente defendidas como importantes para as mais diversas áreas em desenvolvimento.

This created a necessity for a different way of seeing/perceiving these people, which would bring them hope and courage. With this, there began to arise the first organizations called philanthropic , today known as Non-Governmental Organizations, or Third-Sector Organizations. As these structures grew, the number also of volunteers who had the vision of helping these forgotten people grew. However, in the majority of cases, these caretakers were not cared for themselves. They carried pain, lack of love, destroyed dreams and broken lives working with people who had long ago lost the meaning of the word hope. An analysis of these caretakers will be done, who for innumerable reasons begin to lose their own identity, demonstrating, often in the way they treat the people they are serving, that they themselves need to be remembered and cared for. We intend to prepare a basis to raise consciousness of the need for training and recognition of the other and the I, creating a proposal for working in a group. The caretaker helps other people many times to bring order of the chaos into their emotional and social lives, but it is necessary also that the caretaker be heard and embraced. Having his/her own sense of dignity and worth recognized, will reflect in the heart of the other the ones cared for. / No decorrer da história, muitos acontecimentos levaram a desumanização a fazer parte do cotidiano, contagiando, envolvendo famílias e pessoas indiscriminadamente, destruindo egos, dizimando relacionamentos.

Variants of Volunteerism among Mature Adults within Communities of Northeast Tennessee.

Edwards, Martha Wilcox 01 May 2004 (has links)
A purposive study conducted among mature adults aged 55 and older in Northeast Tennessee examined variants of volunteerism as well as volunteer needs of agencies and organizations and what percent of volunteers in those agencies fall within the specified age group. Mature volunteers in the region match profiles of other studies -- predominantly white, married, homeowners, who are protestant, females with educational levels beyond high school, and who have income levels above the regional average. Findings show that most volunteers attend religious services at least once each week but found no association between gender and informal volunteerism, between health and volunteerism, or that rural volunteers are more likely to participate in informal volunteer activities. Results were analyzed using the chi-square test of statistical significance.

Work in voluntary welfare organizations : A sociological study of voluntary welfare organizations in Sweden

Chartrand, Sébastien January 2004 (has links)
Since Sweden has one of the most comprehensive welfare states, the role of voluntary organizations active in the field of welfare is often neglected. The unique Swedish nonprofit sector is characterized by 1) the tradition of popular mass movements in which members are central and the real owners of the organization, 2) large membership and volunteering, but low employment levels, 3) dominance in the fields of culture and recreation, but the relative marginalization in welfare. This Ph.D. dissertation empirically studies work and the perception of work in voluntary welfare organizations (VWOs) in Sweden. I completed a series of 38 interviews of employees and volunteers in four VWOs: 1) a children’s rights organization; 2) a women’s center; 3) a volunteer bureau; and 4) a humanitarian organization. A quantitative survey of some 200 VWOs supplements the qualitative data. Looking at the internal work setting and interactions between workers one realizes that work in VWOs is influenced not only by the popular mass movements (folkrörelser), which are the foundation model of all Swedish voluntary organizations, but also by paradigms emerging out of the public and for-profit sectors: 1) the public paradigm permanently shapes voluntary welfare organizations through the action of paid workers who often have public sector work experience; and 2) work in voluntary organizations is partly integrated into the regular labor market, and interfaces emerge between volunteering and professional life (for-profit paradigm). The private sphere also interferes with volunteering. Finally, this sheds a new light on the claims of VWOs that they are autonomous, “free” entities, and their contribution to social integration and strengthening of social ties.

Beyond 40 Hours: Meaningful Community Service and High School Student Volunteerism in Ontario

Farahmandpour, Hoda 11 August 2011 (has links)
This study explores whether students in the mandated Ontario high school community service program consider their service requirement to be meaningful; the relationship between meaningful service and subsequent service; and other factors related to a meaningful experience and future service. A secondary analysis was conducted using a survey of 1,341 first-year university students, collected by a research team led by Steven Brown of Wilfrid Laurier University. The main finding is that meaningful service is a predictor for subsequent service and can contribute to individual and social change. Meaningful service opportunities help address a gap in service learning literature, which is the impact of service on communities, perhaps by underestimating the capacity of youth to contribute to social change. Three policy recommendations emerge: curriculum should be created to enable students to serve more effectively; program structure is necessary for reflection; and nonprofit agencies can meet both of the above needs.

Feelings of Obligation Related to Volunteering as Serious Leisure Within a Communitarian Framework

Gallant, Karen Anne January 2010 (has links)
This research explores feelings of obligation to volunteer, which lie at the interface of volunteering as simultaneously individual and collective and challenge traditional understandings of volunteering as leisure. The study examined volunteering within the context of communitarianism, particularly how collective outcomes of volunteering are related to feelings of obligation to volunteer. Phase one of this research focused on scale creation of a measure assessing feelings of obligation in the context of volunteerism. Using exploratory factor analyses of data from a student sample, this first phase yielded two measures: an 18-item Obligation to Volunteer as Commitment measure (OVC), encompassing dimensions of reward, affective attachment, flexibility, and side bets; and a 14-item Obligation to Volunteer as Duty measure (OVD), encompassing the dimensions of expectation, burden, and constraint. In phase two, survey research was conducted with 300 volunteers at ten community organizations. These new measures were used to examine relationships between obligation to volunteer and the value orientations of individualism and collectivism, the experience of volunteering as serious leisure, and the community characteristics of sense of community and social cohesion. Both individualism and collectivism were associated with the commitment but not the duty dimension of feelings of obligation, and both value orientations, but particularly individualism, was linked to serious leisure. Serious leisure very closely aligned with the commitment aspect of obligation as well as sense of community and social cohesion, thus emerging as a possible pathway for nurturing sense of community in a culture of individualism. Correlation and hierarchical regression analyses link the commitment aspect of obligation to sense of community and social cohesion. Feelings of duty to volunteer, in contrast, were inversely related to sense of community. Thus, the nature of feelings of obligation related to volunteering as commitment or duty have significant implications for the collective outcomes of volunteering, particularly sense of community. Also notable are the strong theoretical and empirical relationships between the OVC scale and serious leisure, which suggest that the newly-developed commitment scale could be considered a measure of the agreeable obligation that accompanies serious leisure pursuits.
