Adaptations cinématographiques d’Alice au pays des merveilles et De l’autre côté du miroir de Lewis Carroll: Analyse des transécritures de Walt Disney, Jan Švankmajer et Tim Burton observe comment trois versions cinématographiques différentes, provenant d’un même texte source, peuvent être singulières les unes par rapport aux autres. Le but de ce mémoire est d’analyser les transécritures de Walt Disney (1951), de Jan Švankmajer (1989) et de Tim Burton (2010) autant dans les changements narratifs que dans les ajouts faits par les réalisateurs qui personnalisent l’adaptation. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuierons sur la notion d’idée de Deleuze. Chacune des analyses est divisée selon: les idées de roman et de cinéma qui se « rencontrent », les ajouts et modifications des idées de roman, ainsi que les idées ayant été rejetés par l’adaptateur-cinéaste. / Adaptations cinématographiques d’Alice au pays des merveilles et De l’autre côté du miroir de Lewis Carroll: Analyse des transécritures de Walt Disney, Jan Švankmajer et Tim Burton observes how three different cinematographical versions, of the same source text, are singular from one another. The goal of this essay is to analyze the adaptations of Walt Disney (1951), Jan Švankmajer (1989) and Tim Burton (2010) from the narrative choices to what directors added in order to personalize the adaptation. To do so, we rely on Deleuze’s notion of ideas. Every analyze is being divided by: the meeting of the novel’s ideas and the film’s ideas, by ideas that have been added or modified, and by ideas that were eliminated by the adaptor-filmmaker.

That Poor Little Thing: The Emotive Meanings of Diminutives in Polish and Russian Translations of Alice in Wonderland

The emotive connotations of diminutives in English are a source of controversy among scholars, while the Slavic languages of Polish and Russian are considered ‘diminutive-rich’ with diminutives that convey diverse nuances. Thus, the translation of diminutives between English and Slavic languages has either been portrayed as difficult or has been ignored altogether. However, an analysis of Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and several of its translations into Polish and Russian shows that English has many diminutives, some of which are ‘untranslatable’, while many diminutives can be easily translated. Yet, the strong emphasis on diminutives in Polish and Russian produces diminutives in the translations that do not appear in the original text and are not typical of English. We work with the hypothesis that the illustrator is a translator that operates in hisher own language. The research corpus consists of an ensemble of 10 editions of Alice in Wonderland, including the illustrations made by Lewis Carroll himself and by John Tenniel, who was the first and the most famous Alice illustrator after the author. The selection criterion privileges the classic English editions and the best translations to Portuguese of the integral text of Alice. The illustrations of the corpus have different styles and are a sample of different executions of the story and its characters. The methodology consists in bibliographical and documental research, the last one being the search of the referred Alice editions. The theoretical referential use the main authors to deal with intersemioticity, noticeably Roman Jakobson, Julio Plaza, Octavio Paz and Haroldo de Campos; specialists in English literature and Lewis Carroll, like Martin Gardner, Donald Rackin, Jenny Woolf and Morton N. Cohen, specialists in illustrations like Sophie Van der Linden, Martin Salisbury, Morag Styles, Maria Nikolajeva, Carole Scott e Ana Margarida Ramos. The relevance of this research to the area of Communication and Semiotics is in the study of the syncretism between verbal and visual texts, that here is being used to analyze a fundamental work / Esta pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo o conjunto múltiplo e variado constituído pelas ilustrações de Alice no país das maravilhas de Lewis Carroll e como objetivo principal a análise das relações entre o texto verbal e o texto imagético que aí se estabelecem. Busca-se responder o que é a ilustração, que elementos o ilustrador utiliza em seu trabalho e que efeitos de sentido ela desempenha. Trabalhamos com a hipótese de que o ilustrador é um tradutor que opera em língua própria. O corpus de pesquisa consiste em um conjunto selecionado de 10 edições de Alice no País das Maravilhas, incluindo as ilustrações do próprio Lewis Carroll e as de John Tenniel, que, após o autor, foi o primeiro e o mais famoso ilustrador da obra. O critério de seleção privilegia as edições inglesas clássicas e as melhores traduções do texto integral de Alice. Il était une fois...l'histoire d'une petite fille curieuse qui, en suivant un lapin blanc, découvre un pays merveilleux habité par d'étranges créatures. Cette fillette et cet univers, nous les connaissons, c'est l'Alice au pays des merveilles de Lewis Carroll. Ce conte a fait du chemin depuis sa parution en 1865 et ses pas l'ont mené jusqu'à aujourd'hui dans les mains d'un pionnier de la littérature d'horreur au Québec: Patrick Senécal. Depuis 1994, cet auteur est de plus en plus présent dans le panorama littéraire québécois, mais c'est son quatrième roman, Aliss, publié en 2000, qui retient ici notre attention. Dans ce roman, Senécal réécrit l'Alice au pays des merveilles de Carroll à l'aide d'un travail intertextuel et de réécriture. L'enjeu de ce mémoire est de découvrir de quelle manière s'opère la réécriture transformant le conte de Carroll en un nouveau texte qui propose une version moderne du sujet. Le récit de Senécal s'inscrit dans ce que Gérard Genette appelle l'hypertextualité : toute relation qui unit un texte (hypertexte) à un autre texte (hypotexte) dont il dérive. Dans nos recherches, ce sont les théories et la typologie intertextuelle qui servent de premiers moyens d'investigation. En sollicitant les catégories de la citation, de la référence et de l'allusion, nous sommes en mesure d'identifier et d'étudier les relations qu'entretient le récit de Senécal avec le conte de Carroll, mais également avec d'autres intertextes. Les théories de la réécriture et les concepts de répétition et de variation qui lui sont relatifs nous permettent d'analyser en profondeur les transformations apportées à Alice au pays des merveilles pour devenir Aliss. La réécriture joue notamment sur trois aspects. On assiste d'abord à un changement générique qui fait que l'on passe du merveilleux à une oeuvre se trouvant à la frontière entre le récit fantastique et le récit d'horreur. C'est notamment l'aspect cauchemardesque et fantastique déjà suggéré dans le conte de Carroll qui devient la source du glissement de genre. Pour parler de réécriture, il faut que l'on en reconnaisse obligatoirement le modèle. L'étude de la transposition des épisodes et des personnages d'Aliss, construits en miroir avec leur double carrollien et influencés par le changement générique, est donc nécessaire à la compréhension du phénomène. Finalement, en plus de s'approprier le conte de Carroll, Senécal intègre dans son récit l'auteur d'Alice au pays des merveilles et en fait un horrible personnage. The works of Lewis Carroll show an abiding interest on the part of the author in the relationship between education, language and authority. In particular, the Alices are the story of a young girl who must learn to deal with a variety of characters in dream-worlds where the power of language reigns. It is therefore necessary for Alice to learn how language is used for authoritarian purposes and to discover ways of defending herself against it. It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate, in many cases for the first time, the ways in which Alice is able to find "spaces" in language where authority breaks down, places where the fundamental nature of language is unable to support authoritarian use. In this way, "space" will become both a metaphor and a figurative model for Alice's growing knowledge of and resistance to authority.
