The purpose of this study is to investigate the teachers’ described experiences of advantages as well as disadvantages of Arne Trageton’s write to read-method (“ASL”) in contrast to the code-oriented traditional way of teaching. The aim of this study is furthermore to depict the teachers’ opinions on whether they experience that the ASL-method is unfavourable for students in general. This study will also investigate the teachers’ standpoint regarding choice of reading and writing method. The following questions form the basis of this study: Which advantages or disadvantages do the teachers experience with the ASL-method relative to using the code-oriented traditional way of teaching? Do the teachers experience that the ASL-method is unfavourable for some students? Do the teachers only use the ASL-method or do they combine many different reading and writing methods in their teaching? How do the teachers explain their decision in that matter? This study is based on a qualitative method and interviews were performed to acquire knowledge of the teachers’ experiences. The major theoretical approaches of this study are Arne Trageton’s, the founder of the ASL-method, theories concerning the ASL-method and the socio-cultural perspective on learning. The result of the study demonstrates that the ASL-method is described as advantageous because the students’ interests, creativity, motivation and self-confidence increased when using the ASL-method, in contrast to using the traditional way of teaching. The ASL-method was also described as easier to individualize in comparison with the traditional letter-based teaching. The disadvantage with the ASL-method, in contrast to using the traditional teaching, was mainly the fact that the computers and tablets sometimes did not work properly. Overall the ASL-method was described as a good method because all students could participate in the teaching despite their capacity. Speech technology and word editing programs on the tablets were described as descent support for students with slower motor development, difficulties in reading or writing and second language students. Even though the ASL-method was considered a superior method, the method was not described to be sufficient by itself.

Two pupils with writing and reading disabilities in two WTR-classroomsJohansson, Sandra, Bjaaland, Sara January 2015 (has links)
In today's society it's important to be able to read and write because there are texts everywhere, and also as the technology has made a bigger impact in the society. For some children it can be difficult to learn how to write and read. Because of this we have chosen to focus on pupils with disabilities in the read- and writing process. We also want to see how the technology can support pupils in their learning. The aim of this study is therefore to investigate how teachers describe their teaching in relation to reading and writing disabilities. The study also aims to investigate how pupils with reading and writing disabilities describe their education. The sociocultural theory is the base of this study. The empirics to this study is created by interviews with pupils and teachers. The empirics has been analyzed and presented in the result. The result of this study shows that the method "write to read" supports pupils with writing and reading disabilities in their writing and reading education because the link between letter and sound clarifieds for the pupils.

Läsundervisning- att följa en metod eller ej? : En jämförande studie om lärares val av metod i arbetet med den tidiga läsinlärningen / Teaching reading – to follow a method or not? : A comparative study of teachers’ choice of method in early literacy learningPettersson, Sofia January 2015 (has links)
This is a study of how four teachers work with pupils’ early literacy learning. Interviews were conducted with two teachers who chose to use a specific method, Writing to Read (WTR), for teaching pupils to read, and with two teachers who had not chosen a specific method. The aim of the study was to compare how the teachers worked, their motives for their choice of method, and the ideas the teachers have about early literacy learning. To see whether the teachers’ choice of method was related to the individualization of the teaching and their views of pupils’ learning in interaction, Vygotsky’s theories about children’s learning have been used. The result shows that there are both similarities and differences in the teachers’ reasons for their choice of method. Those who use WTR say that they do so to be able to individualize the teaching, while the teachers who do not use a specific method use the same arguments. There is a difference in whether the teachers aim for structured or unstructured teaching, regardless of the choice of method. Several parallels to Vygotsky’s theories were found, in that all four teachers, irrespective of method, think that their teaching should be characterized by interaction and individualization.

To challenge pupils ability to write and read in compulsory school for pupils with intellectual disabilities : A qualitative case study originating in the method of "Write to Read"Carström, Malin, Johansson, Cathrine January 2015 (has links)
To challenge pupils’ ability to write and read in compulsory school for pupils with intellectual disabilities – a qualitative case study originating in the method of “Write to Read”. / Carström, M. & Johansson, C. (2015) To challenge pupils’ ability to write and read in compulsory school for pupils with intellectual disabilities – a qualitative case study originating in the method of “Write to Read”. The purpose of this study is to investigate how four pupils in special schooling’s ability to write and read is possibly affected and developed by working according to the method of “Write to Read” during a period of 8 weeks. The theoretical framework of the study is the sociocultural perspective and it has been chosen according to the approach that learning takes place in interaction with others. The study presents a general view of earlier research of pupils with intellectual disabilities, reading and writing development, reading and writing difficulties, elements of success from teachers working with reading and writing training, pupils’ motivation and participation and with the method of “Write to Read”. By action research in our own classes, we wanted to investigate whether the method of “Write to Read” would be a suitable method to use when trying to develop pupils’ abilities to write and read in Swedish (compulsory) special schools, focusing on pupils with severe intellectual disabilities. We have conducted observations, kept a journal with daily notes, the pupils have been filmed and we have taken photos of our pupils’ work. To sum everything up, our study shows that “Write to Read” combined with training abilities such as knowledge of the letters and of clapping to syllables could be a suitable method within special schools. The result shows that pupils were developing within a number of areas and contributory effects of the study were that our pupils’ motivation and participation increased prominently.
