PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL MODELING OF THE NORMALIZED BRAIN TISSUE-LEVEL VOLUMETRIC EVALUATIONS OF YOUTH ATHLETES PARTICIPATING IN COLLISION SPORTS

Pratik Kashyap (12089945) 18 April 2022 (has links)
<div> <div> <div> <p>Recent observations of short-term changes in the neural health of youth athletes participating in collision sports such as football (boys) and soccer (girls) have incited a need to explore structural alterations in their brain tissue volumes. Studies have shown biochemical, vascular, functional connectivity, and white matter diffusivity changes in the brain physiology of these athletes that are strongly correlated with repetitive head acceleration exposure from on-field collisions. Here, research is presented that highlights regional anatomical volumetric measures that change longitudinally with accrued repetitive head impacts. A novel pipeline is introduced that provides simplified data analysis on a standard-space template to quantify group-level longitudinal volumetric changes within these populations. For both sports, results highlight incremental relative regional volumetric changes in the sub-cortical cerebrospinal fluid that are strongly correlated with head exposure events greater than a 50G threshold at the short-term post-season assessment. Moreover, longitudinal regional gray matter volumes are observed to decrease with time, only returning to baseline/pre-participation levels after sufficient (5-6 months) rest from collision-based exposure. These temporal structural volumetric alterations are significantly different from normal aging observed in gender and age-matched controls participating in non-collision sports. Future work involves modeling safe repetitive head exposure thresholds with multimodal image analysis and understanding their underlying physiological functioning. A possible pathophysiological pathway is presented highlighting the probable metabolic regulatory mechanisms. The interdisciplinary nature of this work is crucial to understand this pathology accurately and aid healthcare, sport professionals in the future. It is evident that continual participation in collision- based activities may represent a risk wherein recovery cannot occur. Even when present, the degree of the eventual recovery remains to be explored but has strong implications for the well-being of collision-sport participants. </p> </div> </div> </div>

Vilka dubbla karriär-upplevelser predicerar mental hälsa hos idrottselever på gymnasienivå? : En tvärsnittsstudie / Which dual career experiences predict mental health in upper secondary sport high school in student-athletes? : A cross-sectional study

Hagehall, Sara, Fallesen, Julia January 2024 (has links)
Mental health is an important resource for a successful and developing athleticcareer (Schinke et al., 2018), which also results in better performance (Henriksen et al.,2019). Commitment to a dual career (DC) seems to be beneficial to the athlete inrelation to several aspects (Aquilina, 2013; Stambulova et al., 2015; Henriksen et al.,2020). A DC can also bring several challenges for a student-athlete (Brown et al., 2015;Stambulova et al., 2015; Linnér, Stambulova &amp; Ziegert, 2021), which could contributeto mental illness instead (Stambulova et al., 2020). Therefore, the aim of this study wasto examine which DC-experiences predict mental health in student-athletes at uppersecondary school in sport. 405 student-athletes participated in this study, 141 women,259 men and 5 participants who identified themselves as neither male nor female. Allparticipants combined studies with sports and were between 15–19 years old (M=16.8;SD=3.3). Data was collected via web survey. Two multiple regressions analysis were conducted. The result of this study shows that DC-experiences such as DC-support, DC-obstacles, DC-competence, and DC-benefits predict mental health. In conclusion, student athletes who have more DC-support, DC-benefits, obtain DC-competencies and have fewer obstacles in their DC, maintain DC-balance and therefore seem to experience better mental health.

The relationship between motivational regulation, needs satisfaction and athlete burnout in young athletes

Nilsson, Emelie, Ahlstedt, Denice January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to examine the mediating role of motivation regulation in the relationship between need-satisfaction and athletic burnout in young elite athletes, based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Employing a longitudinal design with a two-point measurement, the data collection was conducted through digital surveys with 71 participants aged 16 to 19 years (M=17.01, SD=0.93). Two hypotheses were formulated based on the study's purpose and were subsequently tested in separate mediation analyses. The results indicate that self-determined motivation played a statistically significant mediating role in the relationship between need-satisfaction and athletic burnout. However, the results also suggest a positive direct effect between selfdetermined motivation and athletic burnout. Since self-determined motivation is not commonly associated with athletic burnout, the study draws attention to other potential predictors of this phenomenon. Furthermore, the findings suggest that controlled motivation did not have a statistically significant mediating role in the relationship between need-satisfaction and athletic burnout.
