In mixed-focus collaboration, group members create content both individually as a kind of groundwork for discussion and further processing as well as directly together in group work sessions. In case of individual creation, separate documents and contents need to be merged to receive an overall solution. In our work, we focus on mixed-focus collaboration using mobile devices, especially smartphones, to create and merge content. Instead of using emails or messenger services to share content within a group, we describe three different mobile device-based interaction techniques for merging that use built-in sensors to enable ad-hoc collaboration and that are easy and eyes-free to perform. We conducted a user study to investigate these merging interactions. Overall, 21 participants tested the interactions and evaluated task load and User Experience (UX) of the proposed device-based interactions. Furthermore, they compared the interactions with a common way to share content, namely writing an email to send attached content. Participants gave valuable user feedback and stated that our merging interaction techniques were much easier to perform. Furthermore, we found that they were much faster, less demanding, and had a greater UX than email.

School-based professional learning communities (PLCs) have become an important means of “building capacity” among teachers in a wide variety of areas, including those with a subject focus. Very often, these PLCs are mandated by administration, and operate under an established structure. This paper describes an attempt by a mathematics coordinator and school level “lead’ teachers to establish relatively informal PLCs in mathematics in an effort to improve mathematics teaching, and thus student learning, in an environment that focused very much on literacy. The four PLCs created are discussed, as are the opportunities and the challenges that go with the relative freedom offered to the teachers. Sustainability is a central challenge to these groups.

During the last decades, collaborative learning as a pedagogical strategy in HE has been attracting growing interest by both scholars and practitioners. However, its methodological potential is still insufciently used in practice, especially in the virtual context. This paper provides deeper insights into the challenges of designing formative feedback in virtual group work from an e-tutors perspective. Therefore, seven expert interviews were conducted to investigate how formative feedback can be designed in the group development phases according to Tuckman & Jensen (1977). The interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis according to Gläser & Laudel (2010). The applied codes were formed both deductively and inductively and discussed afterwards. In line with other studies like Johnson et al. (2002), the results have revealed that Tuckman’s group phase model is also applicable in virtual settings. In a further step, this paper derives practical implications for e-tutors by identifying specifc guidelines on how to structure formative feedback in each of the group development phases.

In collocated collaboration, applied methods and technologies to support the collaboration process mainly comprise either analog paper and pen methods, large display applications or the usage of several laptops. Whereas paper and pen are easy to use, they impair the digital documentation and further editing. Large displays are expensive, stationary, and depend on speci_c environments. Furthermore, laptops build physical barriers between people, which impedes face-to-face communication. This leads to the fact that direct digitization is still not often performed in collocated collaborative scenarios, although it would be useful for further processing or permanent storing of created content.To address advantages of analog media, especially small size and high ubiquity, and eliminate the disadvantages, namely the lack of direct digitization, we aim at applying mobile devices to collocated collaboration. To contribute to the development of future collaboration tools, we derive and propose concrete design goals for applying mobile devices in collocated mixed-focus collaboration.

Vor dem Hintergrund sich immer schneller und stärker wandelnder Marktbedingungen gelten Netzwerke als die Unternehmensform des 21. Jahrhunderts. Sie erlauben insbesondere kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen die Erhaltung und Erhöhung ihrer Wettbewerbsfähigkeit durch gezielte Kooperation und Bündelung ihrer Kompetenzen. Unternehmen benötigen dafür entsprechende Methoden und Instrumentarien. Diese stehen neben Theorien und Modellen im Mittelpunkt der wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten des Sonderforschungsbereiches (SFB) 457 „Hierarchielose regionale Produktionsnetze“ an der Technischen Universität Chemnitz. Zum nunmehr fünften Male findet am 14. und 15. September 2006 die Fachtagung „Vernetzt planen und produzieren – VPP 2006“ statt. Es werden auch in diesem Jahr die aktuellen Ergebnisse des SFB 457, weiterer nationaler und internationaler Forschungsarbeiten und -projekte auf dem Gebiet der Netzwerkforschung sowie Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen der praktischen Umsetzung durch die Industrie von Wissenschaftlern und Praktikern vorgestellt und diskutiert. Als Referenten der Plenarveranstaltung werden Herr Prof. Kuhn von der Universität Dortmund, Herr Prof. Westkämper von der Universität Stuttgart, Herr Prof. Herzog von der Universität Bremen, Herr Prof. Nyhuis von der Universität Hannover und Herr Prof. Smirnov von der Russischen Akademie der Wissenschaften Sankt Petersburg in ihren Beiträgen verschiedene Aspekte von Netzwerken thematisieren. Neben den schon traditionellen Workshops zu verschiedenen Themenbereichen des Bildens und Betreibens von Netzwerken wird in diesem Jahr ein zusätzlicher Workshop zum Thema „Netzwerke und Cluster in der brasilianisch-deutschen Zusammenarbeit“ stattfinden. Dieser ist Teil des Besuches einer Delegation aus Vertretern der Regierung und Wirtschaft des brasilianischen Bundesstaates Bahia, die gemeinsam mit Vertretern des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung sowie des Sächsischen Ministeriums für Wirtschaft und Arbeit an der Tagung teilnehmen werden, um neue Kontakte zu schließen und weitere Kooperationsvorhaben zu initiieren. Die Tagung „Vernetzt planen und produzieren – VPP 2006“ ist gleichzeitig Abschlusskolloquium des SFB 457, welcher nach sieben Jahren intensiver und erfolgreicher Netzforschung dieses Jahr endet. Maßgeblichen Anteil am SFB 457 hatten die ehemaligen Sprecher Prof. Siegfried Wirth und Prof. Hartmut Enderlein.
