SISTERS OF TAMAR AND DAUGHTERS OF EVE: THE EVANGELICAL VOICES OF #CHURCHTOO

Unknown Date (has links)
White evangelical culture is investigated here regarding the ways that its fundamental theological beliefs propagate and maintain patriarchal assumptions surrounding women. These beliefs further function to legitimate men’s sexual abuse of women and girls. While official theological evangelical beliefs may seem benign, and perhaps commendable to some, a closer examination suggests the mobilization of those beliefs create the foundation for enslavement and destruction of women. The fundamental beliefs undergirding evangelicalism propagate internalized oppression through patriarchal colonialism of women’s bodies, minds, and souls. Tactics of spiritual rape within White evangelical purity culture enact violence, control, and manipulation to appropriate and profit from the sacred power within the spirit of another. My analysis of #ChurchToo tweets demonstrates how formerly-evangelical women exorcize internalized patriarchal identities by reversing patriarchal myths, reclaiming, renaming and becoming Holy Haggard Hags who enact Righteous Fury through the Rage of Dreadful Women. Through the process of renaming and reclaiming, the confiscated and distorted power of the four Great Hags of Our Hidden History are recovered. The Myth of Evil Eve becomes “Ezer Kěnegdô,” Bathsheba the Innocent Lamb dethrones King David, Jezebel returns as a Confident, Clever, and Powerful Woman and her Spirit exorcises Satan’s Agents and Devouring Wolves, and Tamar the Trickster reappears as a Prophetess, with gifts to symbolize the collective power of sisterhood. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Almostinstantly the word spread over the world and women from all across theglobe came together to fight the occurring sexual harassments in workenvironments. Witches, Victims, and Villains: #MeToo and the Political Polarization of Sexual Violence

Shoaf, Hannah 18 April 2022 (has links)
The MeToo movement, which sought to combat sexual violence, evolved into a partisan problem, where support for or against the movement fell across party lines. This polarization negatively impacted the progress of the MeToo movement, fitting the larger pattern of increasing polarization in the United States. My thesis seeks to understand the politicized nature of sexual violence and to explore what language and themes are drawn on to politicize conversations around sexual violence by using the MeToo movement as a case study. My thesis found that the political polarization of sexual violence increased during the MeToo movement (and especially during and after the Kavanaugh hearing) primarily through detractors' language and framing of the issue. #MeToo detractors employed legalistic, violent, and misogynistic language to victimize the accused and villainize victims and supporters. In contrast, #MeToo supporters consistently used legalistic language to advocate for survivors' rights to state support in the face of actual violence. Insight on these politicizing discourses reveals a need for Democrats and Republicans to take on #MeToo policy reforms that both address due process and human rights while refraining from a victim/villain dichotomy.

Den digitala feministiska rörelsen och dess påverkan på kvinnor : En kvalitativ studie om kvinnors upplevelser kring sexuellt ofredande efter #Metoo

Tholcke, Sara January 2020 (has links)

"Seduced and Abandoned Over and Over and Over": A Feminist Semiotic Narrative Analysis of the Films of James Toback

Davis, Stefanie Leigh January 2018 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In this thesis, feminist semiotic narrative methodology is applied to James Toback’s films Love & Money, Exposed, Tyson, and Seduced and Abandoned, in order to illuminate his construction of womanhood and women’s sexuality. In each film, Toback served as writer, director, and producer, giving him total creative and business control. Due to this lack of outside oversight, these four specific films are most likely to directly reflect Toback’s perspective as a filmmaker. This study employs narrative-based semiotic criticism, expanding the work of Walter Fisher and Teresa de Lauretis, to identify how Toback’s creation of world, gaze, object/subject, and desire, construct womanhood and women’s sexuality. Toback’s creation of illusory worlds emphasizes that while superficial beauty qualifies a woman as a sexual commodity for men, sex will ultimately be women’s downfall.

When Art Becomes Advocacy: Music in the #MeToo Movement

Mignogna, Alexis January 2023 (has links)
Music has been an undeniable propelling force in social movements throughout history, including in those that occur in the United States. Based on historical analysis and discourse analysis, I explored music used in past U.S. social movements, with a focus on the abolitionist movement, the Civil Rights Movement, the anti-war/pro-labor movement, and the four waves of feminism. I used these movements’ music and their reception/discourse to contextualize music’s role in more modern movements, such as in the #MeToo movement. Music can reflect the cultural context of the era in which it was written and released, thus making it an essential piece of understanding history as it happens. Music can reflect politics, social movements, power dynamics, and the feeling of an era.The music created and shared throughout the #MeToo movement highlights the range of emotions that come with any healing journey: rage, despair, turmoil, hope, and peace. When artists and musicians share their own stories of sexual assault with the public, other survivors were empowered to come forward and share their journey – a sense of community begins to develop among people who are survivors of sexual assault. Aided by social media and the digital age, music in #MeToo was shared on a global scale at a faster rate than ever before. This virality helped popularize the #MeToo movement almost overnight. #MeToo’s legacy and music remain timeless and forever relevant, and this thesis intends to capture the role that music played in this historical moment. / Media Studies & Production

When the News is the News: A Textual Analysis of NBC and CBS networks' Response to Sexual Harassment Allegations in the Wake of the #MeToo Movement

Cline, Morgan Paige 30 June 2020 (has links)
As the #MeToo movement swept the nation from Hollywood to Washington, within less than a week's time in November of 2017, longstanding news anchors, Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose were fired from their respective news networks because of sexual harassment allegations. As a result, each network had to grapple with repairing a destroyed image while simultaneously fulfilling the duty to report on news objectively. This qualitative analysis examined NBC and CBS's response to the allegations of sexual harassment against each anchor, allegations of withholding information and allegations of ignoring complaints through the lens of image repair theory in order to identify if any of the strategies were present in the networks' response. Applications of image repair discourse to news media organizations is a relatively novel examination and it highlights the complex duality of an organization's right to uphold its image but obligation to present the news objectively, even when it has become the news. / Master of Arts / As the #MeToo movement swept the nation from Hollywood to Washington, within less than a week's time in November of 2017, longstanding news anchors, Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose were fired from their respective news networks because of sexual harassment allegations. As a result, each network had to grapple with repairing a destroyed image while simultaneously running business as usual. This study examined NBC and CBS's response to the allegations of sexual harassment against each anchor, the allegations of withholding information and allegations of ignoring complaints made by employees over the past two decades, all the while attempting to fulfill the duty of objectively reporting the news. This study examined each networks' response using a crisis communication theory and offers an extension to the theory that can be utilized by news network organizations and the like.
