Girouard, Kim 08 1900 (has links)
The history of medicalization of maternity in China is still poorly understood and this master thesis is a first step in the attempt to clear this rich and vast ground. It examines the context in which and to what extent the care of the Chinese women’s maternity has evolved in the French medical consular posts of Southern China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan), from the arrival of the first doctors in 1898 until the eve of the Second World War in1938. It demonstrates how the French sanitary mission took care of pregnancy, childbirth, and new-born health in the consular health establishments, and attempts to see how far, why, and in what areas specifically the Western health care proposed by the French in these regions could have reached the future and new Chinese mothers.

Tourisme et colonisation en Indochine 1898-1939

Demay, Aline 05 1900 (has links)
How did tourism develop in a rapidly expanding colonial territory? How were tourism and colonization combined? What links were established between these two processes? These are the questions that this thesis addresses by demonstrating the exploitation of tourism by colonial policies. This thesis is divided into seven chapters dealing successively with the transfer of European tourism practices to Indochina, their location, their integration into the politics of territorial development in the 1920s, the spatial consequences of their implementation (construction of roads and hotel accommodation), and the attempts of the State to promote Indochina as a touristic destination for both Indochinese and foreign tourists alike.

Blanchette, Gisèle 08 1900 (has links)
At the turn of the 20th century, the diagnostic term neurasthenia – or nervous exhaustion coined by American neurologist George Miller Beard in 1869 – was associated with modern civilization. Hence, the term rapidly spread to most Western countries and as far as Japan. Our contemporary language of stress, burn-out, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome has a history that goes back to the birth of the term neurasthenia. As Vietnam underwent deep sociocultural transformations during the French colonial era, especially during the 1920s and 1930s, life conditions became increasingly conducive to the dissemination of the language of nerves and to the appropriation of the term neurasthenia by middle class Vietnamese. This Master’s thesis on the early history of neurasthenia in Vietnam looks into the social transformations effected by the French colonial government, mainly urbanization and public education, which lead to the emergence of a new vietnamese urban middle class. Based on the vietnamese press of the period, it analyzes the appropriation of the diagnostic term neurasthenia by the Vietnamese, the causes to which they attributed neurasthenia, as well as the main treatments proposed by Vietnamese doctors. After comparing how neurasthenia was appropriated in a few Western countries, as well as in Japan and China, and then showing its appropriation in Vietnam, it shows that colonized status meant a somehow limited access to the “modern” disease neurasthenia, somehow similar to the access to “modernity”, due to political domination. The thesis then sheds light on the early history of a diagnosis still used nowadays in Vietnam, of a disease still called there “the disease of our time”.

Culture stratégique et libéralisation politique au Myanmar

Rancourt, Jean-François 08 1900 (has links)
Myanmar is going through a political liberalization process which was initiated from above. The military regime held a general election in 2010, which brought to power a new government composed of both civilians and militaries. Since then, most of the sanctions imposed to Myanmar by Western states were lifted, and we observe a diversification of the country's international relations. Nested in the Chinese sphere of influence in recent years, Myanmar restores diplomatic and economic ties with the West. Few researchers have attempted to explain the causes of this political transition, and the links between the political liberalization and the diversification of international relations has not yet been explained. This thesis proposes to do so by using a theoretical model derived from two types of literature, the one on strategic culture and the one on political transitions. It suggests that Myanmar’s political liberalization is due to power struggles within the regime between two strategic subcultures, the hardliners and softliners. The application of norms favored by hardliners having failed in achieving the strategic objectives of the regime, softliners were able to impose their own normative preferences. It also suggests that the political liberalization process was a necessary step for the Burmese government to be able to diversify its international relations.

TF1 face au tsunami du 26 décembre 2004 : construction d’un objet politique et médiatique (déc.2004-fin 2009) / TF1 facing the December 26, 2004 tsunami : construction of a political and media-related object (Dec.2004-late 2009)

De Azevedo, Marlyce 05 February 2010 (has links)
On December 26, 2004 one of the most violent earthquakes in history hits offshore the Indonesian island of Sumatra, causing a series of tsunamis. If natural disasters represent a type of event valued by the media, this one distinguishes itself as a new media-related object, structured, according to us, on a crisis semiotic, based on confusion, violence and emergency. Motivated by competition and the unbelievable nature of the tsunami, the media offered an information in line with a logic of dramatization, aesthetic and politic. We take it as axiomatic that the dramatization expressed itself through: an important coverage during the weeks and months that followed and the redundancy of shocking images, the difficulty experienced by the media in the comprehension of an unfamiliar phenomenon and the use of a rhetoric of emotion based upon a dialectic of distance and proximity. The media representation of the event reveals its three dimensions: a reality dimension of the material and human consequences of the disaster and the political actions it generated, a symbolic dimension of the interpretations it is subject to and the representations it promotes and an imaginary dimension revealing the fears linked to disasters. De facto, the representation reveals a vision of the world and its actors. We mean to observe how the representation is based on many questioning: on the link between disaster and political ecology, disaster and risk, disaster and the North-South opposition. We also decided to confront our corpus to the area of fiction, by analyzing a British-American TV film: “Tsunami: the aftermath”. This parallel highlights the relation between information and fiction, the characteristics of fiction and information and the political, cultural and ideological identity of the TV channel.
