A qualitative analysis of experiences of detention within mental health services

Seed, Tara January 2014 (has links)
This thesis set out to explore the experiences of being detained and admitted to an inpatient unit. It is comprised of three papers. Paper one and paper two have been prepared according to the guidelines of the journal they will be submitted to. Paper one is a systematic review of the qualitative literature which has explored participants’ experiences of involuntary detention. This paper provides an update to a review previously carried out and attempts to answer some questions that the previous review were unable to answer. Databases were searched and studies were screened for their relevance. Fifteen studies were located and the results were synthesised using a standardised metasynthesis methodology. Seven overarching themes emerged, illustrating positive and negative experiences of involuntary detention and factors which impact on these experiences. The synthesis resulted in clear recommendations for clinical practice and future research. Paper two is a qualitative study which sought to explore the experiences of detention under the Mental Health Act for anorexia nervosa. Four participants were inpatients and under the Mental Health Act at the time of interview and eight participants had been discharged. A grounded theory analysis revealed four overarching themes which capture their experiences over time and how these experiences impact on a person’s recovery. The findings have been incorporated into a framework and are discussed in relation to existing literature. The paper outlines recommendations for clinical practice and future research. Paper three is a critical appraisal of the overall research process. It draws on the researcher’s reflective journal to highlight the theoretical, methodological, personal challenges and learning outcomes which the researcher encountered. It discusses the clinical implications in relation to the researcher’s future career as a clinical psychologist within the NHS, as well as the wider implication for the profession as a whole.

“I just want them to feel safe, unfortunately, it’s not always as easy as it sounds” : - A qualitative study highlighting the experience of working in accommodations for unaccompanied refugee minors

Segerberg, Fredrik January 2016 (has links)
In the last couple of years there has been an immense increase in the number of unaccompanied refuge minors seeking asylum in Sweden. These minors share one thing in common; they have all abandoned things they hold dear in pursuit of a better life. The majority of them are placed into residential care homes, accommodations where they are aided and cared for by personnel. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research regarding how these personnel experience their work. With help of the method grounded theory and interviews, I investigate their working situation and their role in these homes. All participants agree that their primary role and task are to establish a feeling of safety amongst the minors, however, organizational aspects can hinder this process. Organizational aspects are also key factors that have to be adequate in order for the personnel to increase their professional knowledge. By including the framework resilience therapy and comparing this to my result, I put my study in a bigger context, suggesting that if the minors are capable of feeling safe, they will also develop skills that increase their wellbeing throughout their lives.

Developing a theory of open access : a grounded theory based literature review / Att utveckla en teori om open access : en litteraturstudie baserad på grundad teori

Andersson, Kent-Inge January 2016 (has links)
The thesis presents a conceptual literature review of the subject of open access as it is reflected in literature relevant to digital library research. An approach to the grounded theory method specifically created for the purpose of performing a literature review is applied to 70 articles and conference proceedings found in the databases LISA and LISTA. Through the coding of the literature five categories that conceptually order the subject of open access emerged; Open Access, Authors, Scholarly Communication, Libraries and Librarians, and Developing and Transitional Countries. The conceptual relations of the categories are discussed in the presentation of the categories. The emerged theory is then validated through a review of earlier literature, which focused on literature reviews on open access. A model of the emerged theory with explanatory narratives are then presented in the concluding chapter.

"Respect is active like an organism that is not only cumulative but has a very personal effect": A grounded theory methodology of a respect communication model in the college classroom.

Martinez, Alma 08 1900 (has links)
This study examined the notion of respect in the college classroom. While pedagogical researchers had previously studied the phenomenon, each found challenges in defining it. Moreover, communication scholars do not examine respect as a primary pedagogical factor with learning implications. Focus groups provided venues for topic-specific discussion necessary for better understanding the diversity of students' worldviews regarding respect in the college classroom. Grounded theory allowed for searching theoretical relevance of the phenomenon through constant comparison with categorical identification. The most practical contributions of this research identifies as several major notions including, the importance of relationships within the process, student self-esteem, and global-classroom respect. In addition, implications emerged from the data as learning, motivation, and environment. One other practical contribution exists as a respect communication model for the college classroom. Further, examining students' worldviews of respect in the classroom provides benefits for pedagogical scholars, students, and instructors.

The Role of Leadership and Group Processes in Innovation: An Emerging Theory of Leadership for Active Learning Organizations in Higher Education

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation aims to present an emerging theory of leadership for active learning organizations in higher education by clarifying factors leaders should integrate to facilitate adaptability. The emergent theory is grounded in multi-year mixed methods action research exploring the role of design, delivery, and leadership of a reflective action learning team model on innovation in a higher education setting. Four research methods were employed including document analysis, interviews, observations, and surveys. Data were analyzed using content analysis, process analysis, coding, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s alpha, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. A grounded theory approach permeated all analyses. Research was guided by theories of experiential learning, action learning, and organizational learning, as well as change theory and design thinking. Results revealed that leaders of active learning organization can improve innovation by facilitating reflective action learning teams that are inclusive, empowering, and iterative. Additionally, teams that display more frequent and consistent welcoming, ideating, synthesizing, and mentor seeking behaviors have more innovative outcomes than teams displaying these behaviors less often and inconsistently. This research indicates that employees who participated in these teams gained the skills and knowledge needed to develop innovative proposals for the organization and increased individual innovative abilities at a statistically significant level. This study adds to the existing literature by offering a theory for leadership to promote effective team learning and innovation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 2020

Internet of Things : Tapping into security and privacy issues associated with the internet of things

Ahmad, Nabeel January 2021 (has links)
The Internet of things and its collaborative technologies such as 5G, cloud, artificial intelligence, analytics, and automation will allow people and objects/devices to communicate not only with each other but with anything at any time and anywhere using the internet. Nowadays, people interact with different smart devices daily. Keeping in mind technology’s evolution, it is estimated that each of us will own roughly 15 linked devices by 2030. Therefore, we cannot neglect the impact of this technology on virtually everything and the various risks associated with such emerging technologies. The goal of this thesis was to better understand the phenomenon of the Internet of Things and more importantly, what security, privacy, and trust threats are associated with it. And how these threats can be overcomed. Moreover, how IoT devices are perceived in terms of privacy and security by people and what factors they must keep in mind while buying, using, and disposing of such devices. Literature review and interviews were made to better understand the issues of privacy and security in IoT devices and people’s understanding of them. A general inductive method proposed by the grounded theory was used to analyze the obtained data, and answers were grouped into categories to identify different themes within the data. The results of the interviews and data showed that people’s top priorities with smart home IoT devices were interest in technology, comfort, a better lifestyle, energy savings, and cost savings. People were unaware of the gravity of security and privacy issues by and large, and they had no idea how to counteract them. Common uses of smart devices include virtual assistants, smart heating, listening to music, getting weather and traffic updates, smart lighting, smart lock systems, and fitness gadgets. The results can be seen in the empirical findings and discussion chapters. These results will also be published on relevant Facebook groups and in the local newspaper, Valbyavisen. Data showed IoT understanding and use of technology were directly proportional to the age factor. Young people were more aware and excited as compared to older ones. Finally, some suggestions were presented on how to buy, use, and discard IoT devices. Future research directions were also presented to conclude the thesis report.

Fear resilience in emotiondriven organizations theory (FRT) : En grounded theory studie om känslor hos svenska soldater och officerare före, under och efter stridsrelaterade händelser

Bremer, Christian January 2021 (has links)

Meaning, Perception and Decision-Making Examining Divisions of Housework in Newly Cohabitating Dual-Earner Couples

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: The division of household tasks has been studied extensively over the past fifty years, but there are unanswered questions about why partners still report imbalances. In this study, I employed a grounded theory research design to systematically collect and analyze data from newly cohabitating, dual-earner couples to generate theory. Three prominent theories (relative resources, time availability and gender ideology) served as the framework for this research. The purpose of this study was to expose the processes of meaning-making, interpretations and decision-making regarding divisions of housework and to determine if, and if so how, dissymmetry in household tasks are understood. My research questions addressed the meanings newly cohabitating couples ascribed to household tasks by and explored how they understand their allocation of these tasks. Eighteen in-depth interviews of six newly cohabitating couples were conducted. Results from the study highlight six major themes that contribute to couples’ meaning-making processes regarding housework performance: care, consistency, expectations, gender & upbringing, micromanagement, and task preference. These findings contribute to the broader body of housework literature by demonstrating how grounded theory methods may offer a unique approach to the examination of household task performance. Further, germination of the blended output theory of housework (B.O.T.H.) that emerged from this study could provide an opportunity to better understand changing family structures. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication 2019

Impact of the death of a male clergy on the spouse a pastoral challenge

Mhlabane, Peter January 2017 (has links)
Clergy widows face unique challenges because of being in the manse and their changed position in the congregation. Though they are human, like everyone, the expectations from the church and community are usually different. As the mother to the church, she is expected to be strong for the sake of the church members. There is a common assertion that a clergy spouse should conceal her grief due to her position in public. Many clergy spouses struggle to find their ministry rhythm after losing their husband. One of the contributory factors is the manner in which the local church leadership handles the clergy family after the death of the male clergy. This research was undertaken as a response to the plight of the clergy widows under the local church leadership. A qualitative methodological design was followed to tap out new experiences. Five clergy widows and one pastor were interviewed and an in-depth qualitative analysis was undertaken to explore the role of the church on caring for the clergy family. The results of the study are presented in a descriptive and interpretive approach. The available literature was coherently linked to participants’ narratives in developing new knowledge. Hence, the research is intended to contribute by bringing new perspective on how the church cares for the clergy family after the death of the male clergy. This study was initially scheduled to be done within the Sekhukhune district in the Limpopo province. However, due to the withdrawal of some potential participants, the author ended up overlapping to part of the Mpumalanga province. It was discovered that most churches provided the necessary support towards the burial of the clergy but to dismally disappear immediately after the funeral. This trend coupled with the removal of the clergy family from the manse immediately after the funeral has caused unfathomable trauma in the clergy family As this study’s aim was to contribute to the field of practical theology and pastoral care, the interpretive model postulated by Osmer was employed. The findings are hoped to contribute to the body of knowledge within an African perspective. It is intended to contribute to pastoral an approach, which is applicable to the African perspective and Biblical ethos. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Practical Theology / MA / Unrestricted

"Att inte alltid orka" : En grundad teori om högkänslighet och moderskap

Larsson, Frida, Kainulainen, Maria January 2019 (has links)
