Understanding knowledge management and corporate performance: A test of an integrated model

Lin, Ling-tsen 27 July 2007 (has links)
Knowledge management, a broad collection of organizational practices related to generating, capturing, disseminating know-how and promoting knowledge sharing within an organization, and with the outside world, has become a critical determinant of competitiveness for the private sector in many countries. Knowledge management programs have been increasingly implemented in various enterprises all over the world. Many research dimensions in knowledge management, including phenomena of enablers and barriers, action of practices and strategies, level of individual and culture, knowledge of identification and valorization, technology of hard systems and soft systems, outcome of costs and benefits, etc, have been explored. Although a wide variety of factors have been identified as influencing knowledge management performance, little is known about the relative influence of each of these factors on corporate performance. In this paper, we adopt concepts of balance score card and develop an integrative model to understand better how these factors combine to affect knowledge management performance and corporate performance as well. Our model is examined from a survey of top 5,000 enterprises in Taiwan. Our survey questionnaire is developed by the amalgamation of available literature on knowledge management, particularly related to (1) comments on concepts and structure of three knowledge capabilities, i.e., knowledge identifying & capturing, knowledge sharing, and knowledge creating; (2) critical success factors of knowledge management, and (3) performance evaluation of knowledge management. Our study also gather the corresponding financial data of surveyed enterprises from Taiwan market observation post system. Our research results offer insight into the determinants of knowledge management and corporate performance. We have identified a number of specific factors that influence this matter. Furthermore, we have been able to examine the relative influence of the various factors identified as important determinants of knowledge management performance in literature. Furthermore, it provides decision makers with specific advice on ways to improve corporate performance via knowledge management. Thus, it appears that the integrated knowledge management and corporate performance model has significant potential for supporting both research and practice in this area.

The adoption of Knowledge Management Systems in Mexico : A Quantitative Study

Prado Tamez, Luis Ernesto January 2014 (has links)
Knowledge is a very important asset for organizations; it is one of the best sources of competitive advantage. Knowledge Management is used to effectively capture and apply knowledge in organizations. This task is usually carried out with the help of knowledge management systems, which serve for the creation, transfer, application and storage/retrieval of knowledge. Currently in Mexico the level of KM in organizations is not at the level that it could be. It seems that organizations are having a hard time applying the practices and level of KM that organizations in first world countries have achieved. The purpose of this study is to understand what factors drive employees in Mexico to adopt knowledge management systems. With these results organizations will know what factors they should pay close attention to, and it will shed light into what actions or interventions they should take in order to increase the adoption level of KMS. In order to do this, a research framework was designed based on a review of theoretical models used to study the adoption of technology, as well as previous KM adoption studies. And by applying a survey questionnaire, which received a total of 953 valid responses, through which several hypotheses were tested, it was found that subjective norm and efficiency gains have a significant positive influence over perceived usefulness, which in turn has a significant positive influence on the intention to use and attitude towards use of KMS. Subjective norm also influences image, which itself also influences perceived usefulness. It was also found that perceived ease of use has a positive influence on attitude towards use, perceived usefulness and attitude towards use. Finally voluntariness influences attitude towards use which in turn influences intention towards use, which is the primary factor that we wish to influence for usage behavior. The most important factors that organizations in Mexico, particularly in Monterrey, should pay attention to when seeking to increase the level of adoption of KMS are the following, in order of relevance: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, subjective norm, efficiency gains, voluntariness and image.

Žinių valdymo modelio taikymas tarptautinėje organizacijoje / Application of the model of knowledge management in international organization

Lasavičiūtė, Aistė 20 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Within the last few years, the topic of knowledge management has gathered a lot of interest in the corporate sectors. The design and implementation of knowledge management systems in academic libraries to enable knowledge management processes : a case study of Makerere University Library

Manafu, Sylvia January 2016 (has links)
Knowledge management (KM) is increasingly becoming important for organisations to enhance their competitive advantage, performance and to become more effective. Academic institutions and academic libraries, in particular, have come to the realisation that they too can benefit from knowledge management and are increasingly looking to adopt appropriate means to effectively manage their knowledge resources so as to improve the services rendered to their patrons. Knowledge management systems (KMS) are suitable means for academic libraries to manage knowledge and enable the processes of creation, storage, sharing and application of knowledge. While issues related to the design and implementation of knowledge management systems have been widely discussed within various sectors such as the business sector, there is a paucity of research pertaining to KMS implementation in academic libraries yet libraries have started to use several technologies for KM without putting certain issues that are critical to the successful implementation into consideration. Therefore, this study, puts forwards the idea of a KMS in Makerere University Library, exploring several aspects with the aim of discovering how the library can successfully implement a knowledge management system and in so doing explore the readiness of Makerere University Library to implement a KMS. An exploratory study was done adopting the qualitative research approach with Makerere University Library as the case study. The study involved interviews with eight library staff members in the librarian and IT staff categories that were purposively selected to provide information to the study. The major findings from the study revealed that, the majority of library staff at Makerere University Library understand the meaning of knowledge and knowledge management concepts though more training is still needed to clarify these concepts to some staff that do not have a clear understanding of the two concepts. The study also revealed that, the technological infrastructure of the library needs to be updated to support the KMS implementation. Other factors discovered that are key for the successful KMS design and implementation include: library management support, KMS budget, library culture, KM strategy, policies and guidelines, rewards and incentives. The study also identified benefits of a KMS for the library as well as challenges that the library may face in implementing a KMS. Finally, the study puts forward recommendations in the form of strategies for the library to successfully implement a KMS. / Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Information Science / MIT / Unrestricted

Knowledge Management Activities Of Young Firms In Sweden : Exploring knowledge management enablers and understanding the relation between knowledge management activities and financial performance.

Nguyen, Thi Thu Loi, Alili, Hasan January 2021 (has links)
Sweden is a country that stands out in terms of attracting highly skilled workers and having a large number of young firms. However, with the young age and specifically put in a concrete context of the COVID-19 pandemic, young firms may face the risk of losses due to a lack of funds to maintain or having volatile financial sources.  Therefore, this thesis tries to provide insights on the relation between knowledge management activities (KMAs) and financial performance in young firms from 5 to 10 years old in Sweden. In other words, the thesis aims to understand how young firms in Sweden have implemented KMAs inside their firms. More specifically, striving to determine which knowledge management enablers influence KMAs, what kinds of KMAs young firms are applying, and at what level those kinds of activities impact young firms’ financial performance. A mixed-method approach has been selected to utilize both qualitative and quantitative methods. Together with semi-structured interviews, Exploratory Sequential Design is applied in the thesis, which enables defining the impact of KMAs on the financial performance of young firms in Sweden and the availability of the presented conceptual framework in practice.

The intranet: a platform for knowledge management systems based on knowledge mapping.

Buniyamin, N., Barber, Kevin D. January 2004 (has links)
No / This paper presents a discussion based on a literature review and a case study on the suitability of using an intranet as a platform to implement Knowledge Management System (KMS). A description of Knowledge Management (KM) and the current research carried out in this area, with examples of web-based KMS systems currently implemented in organisations, are presented. Further, this paper then describes how knowledge mapping of an organisation's intranet as a form of a KMS can be used to promote the re-utilisation of knowledge, which will contribute to the competitiveness of the organisation. A case study that illustrates and presents evidence of the need and suitability of such a system is provided. The paper ends with a proposal for future research to be carried out in this area.

Knowledge management tool selection

Holland, Suzi January 2013 (has links)
Dawson (2009) suggested a twelve step methodology for implementing knowledge management solutions following research which showed that implementing knowledge management solutions was not as successful as expected. This thesis investigates the third of this twelve step methodology which requires finding a knowledge management solution in the context of the problem. The aim of the research is to determine a methodology that will provide a systematic way for managers to select an appropriate knowledge management tool given a particular working environment. Two organisations are investigated to confirm that there is a need for a systematic methodology for selecting knowledge management tools and how a methodology may help in achieving selecting an appropriate tool. This investigation is carried out using case studies, action research and interviews and results in discovering that organisations do not have a systematic method for selecting tools which leads to tools being selected haphazardly and not always successfully. Two tools are developed to aid a manager in selecting a knowledge management tool: the House of Knowledge Management Tool Selection and the Knowledge Management Tool Classification Grid. The House tool helps to identify the knowledge problem being solved and evaluates all potential knowledge management tools against the problem. The barriers to the potential success of the tools are also examined. The grid identifies potential tools by classifying them against knowledge problems. The two tools are further refined and developed using the two organisations as case studies to demonstrate how and when the tools can be used. This leads to development of the Barrier House and the Evaluation Grid. A framework and associated methodology are then developed that can be used as a guide to using the tools, offering a systematic approach to selecting knowledge management tools given any environment and thus accomplishing the aim of the thesis.

Belevičiūtė, Inga, Belevičiūte, Inga 21 November 2008 (has links)
The thesis “A system architecture centred on knowledge management processes” consists of these chapters: 1. Introduction. 2. Knowledge management and knowledge management tools. 3. Analysis of knowledge management systems, their architectures and solutions. 4. A system architecture centred on knowledge management processes. 5. Knowledge management implementations in organizations. 6. General conclusions. The introduction chapter covers relevance, tasks, object, scientific novelty and practical value of the research, and work approbation in international conferences. The first chapter presents knowledge management definitions discussed by many authors in academia and industry. To enter into this subject, knowledge determinations and interpretations widely discussed in literature are analysed. Later, tasks which knowledge management solves in organizations and tools which help to put it into practice are discussed. In the second chapter architectures of knowledge management systems suggested by other researchers in literature are investigated. Thereafter, a classification of them and an investigation of examples of such systems or solutions are made. After the analysis of knowledge management discipline and existing knowledge management system architectures, an architecture for knowledge management systems which is knowledge management processes centred is suggested in the third chapter. Then, specifications of information and communication technologies which could be used... Utveckling av wiki för e-handel : Vägledande designprinciper

Södergren, Oskar January 2023 (has links)
This study investigates how a young organization with growing pains in need of managing collective knowledge can be helped through the identification and development of design principles from previous knowledge management research. By analyzing and applying these design principles in the organization's context, development of a conceptual model of a wiki has been carried out. 8 design principles have formed the basis for the development of this artefact, which has been developed in communication with a focus group within the study environment. The work is of an applied nature where action research and thus iterative steps with reflection have contributed to identification, as well as development of the design principles and the conceptual model. The developed model offers, for example, a concept to use a smart linking structure in the wiki to be able to replace the need for a separate learning management system for education. It also uses context- and role-based routing to ensure that the right knowledge lands with the right person
