Real vs. imaginary users: measuring the impact of home movie collections on historical scholarship

Treat, Laura Jean 23 September 2014 (has links)
In the past thirty years, a growing community has emerged to advocate for the preservation and recognition of home movie collections based on their historical significance. Despite the significant cost of preserving and providing access to these collections and the myriad challenges they pose to archivists and researchers, no substantive research exists that evaluates their actual scholarly use or impact. Through a publication analysis and a survey of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, I sought to determine if there is a difference between whom archivists think should be using home movie collections and who is actually them. Though my findings suggest that home movies have yet to impact the scholarly work of historians, I offer recommendations for future research and professional development that may encourage increased scholarly use as well as increased collaboration between archivists and historians. / text

Rebels, nudie-cuties, and hipsters : a study of the American genre film archive

Kusnierz, Lauren Ashley 14 October 2014 (has links)
The American Genre Film Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2009 by Tim League, founder and CEO of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. With a sense of rebellion against established film archives, AGFA is dedicated to the collection of 35mm prints of exploitation films from the 1960s-1980s in order to conserve and distribute these neglected films. A confluence of issues including the history of the films in the collection, AGFA’s connection with the Alamo Drafthouse, and influences from the hipster subcultures combine to inform AGFA’s practices and mission. This thesis will explore how the American Genre Film Archive conforms to and rebels against the established archive community by means of its mission and institutional structure. Also, this thesis will explore AGFA as a hipster institution through its collecting and exhibition practices. AGFA’s roles in the wider film archive community and the hipster community converge into an unusual archive serving unusual films. / text

Web 2.0概念與技術在我國檔案典藏單位應用之研究 / A Study on the Use of Web 2.0 Conception and Technology for Archives in Taiwan

林國勳, Lin, Guo Syun Unknown Date (has links)
Along with develop of computer and network, archives are come from only paper made to both of paper made archives and electronic records. Web 2.0 provides more comfortable and convenient ways of website manage and use than Web 1.0, it has more and more use in any kind of website now. Website will not only provide information for user to read in future, but also place importance on the interaction between website manager and user. So how do we use Web 2.0 to combine archive service with network will be an important question. The thesis aims to: (1) Web 2.0 conception and technology; (2) the using of Web 2.0 in archive websites in the world; (3) the situation of archival repository websites in Taiwan; (4) what kinds of Web 2.0 technology are useful for archival repository websites in Taiwan. The thesis apply literature analysis in Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 first, then interview eight archives in Taiwan. At last generalize five conclusions from literature and interview information: (1) Web 2.0 has an advantage position on sharing and interaction, to promote website utility rate; (2) many national archives in the world are already provide Web 2.0 website; (3)problems and resolutions of archival repository websites in Taiwan; (4)useful Web 2.0 service in archival repository website in Taiwan. Finally, the thesis provide five suggestions: (1) establish a complete website system for organization archival repository; (2) provide more sole duty staffs to website management; (3) enhance archival repository website service and advertisement; (4) the training of Web 2.0 and information education to archive managers; (5) give a small experiment on the useful of Web 2.0 using in archival repository websites in Taiwan.

Backup, recovery and archiving of files in a multi-access computing system

Wight, Alexander Sinclair January 1974 (has links)
General-purpose multi-access computing systems with files stored on random-access devices require that these files be protected. If the total on-line storage is inadequate there is a need for wellorganized off-line storage. This thesis discusses the management problems involved in handling backup and archive copies of files. In Part I we review what a number of systems, including the Edinburgh Multi-Access System (EMAS), have achieved. We also consider the influences of hardware and other forms of computing system. In Part II we return to EMAS and propose a design and an implementation to provide comprehensive facilities, for backup copies of files and recovery of them, and also for archive storage.

Writing and rewriting Henry Hills, printer (c. 1625-1688/9)

Durrant, Michael William January 2015 (has links)
In recent years a number of important studies have emerged that focus on the lives of the human agents who operated in the early-modern book trade. This marks a scholarly shift away from the technologies of book production towards the figures who operated, profited from, and helped to shape, print technologies and their related products. In this critical movement the identities of printers, publishers, and booksellers have come to matter, both in terms of our understanding of what constitutes ‘print culture,’ and in efforts to narrativise the history of the book. However, although scholars have become increasingly familiar with a critical vocabulary that links early-modern print with textual transience, and the archive with paradigms associated with absence, disputation, and authenticity, biographies related to the lives of book-trade professionals have tended to privilege the representational stability of the documentary evidence we use to reconstruct past lives. This thesis aims to address this critical vacuum by analysing the life and career of one highly controversial, although critically neglected, 17th-century printer, Henry Hills (c. 1625-1688/9). By drawing together methodologies associated with bibliography, the history of the book, and the study of literatures, the thesis seeks to self-reflexively respond to the absences, doublings, missing or fabricated texts, revisions, accretions, and amendments that seem to mark, and have come to shape, the story of Hills’ life. Theories and approaches associated with the materiality of early-modern lives, critical biography, and the archive are used to fully explore the way Hills functioned both in his own time and after as a metonymic figure who has been actively written and rewritten with different historically specific agendas in mind. Ideas of elusiveness, how his contemporaries struggled to represent Hills, and the problem of locating him in the documentary evidence, are also investigated. In the process this thesis casts new light not only on Hills but on the 17th-century printing trade and the printer as a cultural emblem, 17th-century history and culture, and the way we research lives in the early modern period. Each of the chapters of this thesis discusses archival sources that critical biography and bibliography have traditionally looked to for biographical details of Hills’ life. These include a Particular Baptist confession-cum-conversion account entitled The Prodigal Returned, said to have been composed by Hills in 1651 while he served a prison sentence in the Fleet for adultery. I also discuss three accounts of Hills’ high-profile conversion to Catholicism in the mid-1680s, which were authored between 1684 and 1733. The thesis provides a detailed analysis of a conspiracy story, first published in 1697, which posthumously cast Hills as a key player in a bibliographical scandal that is said to have taken place in 1649. I also pay close attention to Hills’ last will and testament, a document that spawned a number of very public legal contestations amongst members of the Hills family. Through a close, historicised reading of these materials, this thesis adds new discussions of the way in which Hills was read and contested by his contemporaries, later historians, and bibliographers, and throughout I retain a sense of the highly mediated nature of the evidence we use to reconstruct Hills biographically, while stressing his importance in the cultural imagination of the period.

An Archival Expedition: My Journey to Organize and Further Document the History of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association

Durst, Amanda 01 January 2005 (has links)
I joined the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) in the spring of 2004 and immediately assumed the position of VASTA Archive Cataloguist. I began to sort and file the history of the organization, as it existed. I worked on the archive project for almost a year before I stumbled onto a second project. In discovering something missing from the VASTA Archive, I began devising a plan to collect stories to flesh out the existing materials. They will be called the "VASTA Stories". In my two years of service to VASTA - as archive cataloguist, and now as archivist - I have worked to develop a system of organization for the existing materials, a catalogue system to document the archive's contents, as well as a system for the collection of new materials. My involvement in VASTA, and the inspiration for these projects, comes from Kate Ufema and Janet Rodgers - both past-presidents of VASTA.

Autoria e oralidade na educação infantil: o papel do arquivo / Autorship and orality on childhood education: the role of the archive

Castro, Lólia Maria Fonseca Reis Ferreira de 23 April 2019 (has links)
This work is based on the theory of Literacy from the perspective of Leda Verdiani Tfouni, and also of the pecheuxtian Discourse Analysis. The work is based on the search for a view at authorship and literacy in oral productions, in order to theoretically reflect on the concepts of language, writing, reading, authorship and pedagogical practices in school everyday. Based on these considerations, the work aims to investigate if the literacy practices in a municipal school of Early Childhood Education, which, on several occasions, enables the access of the subject-students to the archive, like Pêcheux understood, and by the archive, the authorship. To this end, a data collection was carried out, through ten weekly visits to a public school of Early Childhood Education, located in the region of Ribeirão Preto, where observations of the subject-students were made in the process of construction of the meanings, inside the classroom. Based on the analysis, we have observed that when the subject-students are submitted to the authoritarian pedagogical discourse, like understood by Orlandi, occurs an interdiction to the meanings and an injunction in saying or silence, the authorship does not apply. However, when in the classroom circulates many possibilities of interpretation and the subjects can identify themselves, or not, with certain meanings, when the subjectivity has space and when the archive is elaborated with the subject-students, the authorship manifests itself at an early age in the discoursive productions in the Early Childhood Education

Self-identity and discourses of race : exploring a group of white South Africans' narratives of early experiences of racism.

Makhanya, Zamakhanya 26 May 2011 (has links)
This research project falls under the broader Apartheid Archives Project. The aim of the project was to collect the narratives of black and white South Africans, of their earliest quotidian or everyday racist experiences. This project focused particularly on the nature of the experiences of racism of (particularly ‘ordinary’) white South Africans under the old apartheid order and their continuing effects on individual and group functioning in contemporary South Africa, especially on the ways in which white South Africans are positioned by racialised discourses and the reproduction of power relations through these positions. The project utilised narratives that were written by white South Africans and were available on the Apartheid Archive Project’s database. In total, the narratives of twelve white, middle-aged, middle class South Africans were analysed using Parker (1992) and Willig’s (2008) guidelines for analysis of the discourses which converge with Foucault’s ideas. This research report gives prominence to the discourses of race present in the narratives of white South Africans which were examined and it also focuses on how racialised discourses offer the narrators different subject positions to occupy in present day South Africa. Three discursive themes were identified, namely rationalising discursive strategies, race and racism discourses and discourses of redemption. Rationalising discursive strategies were found to utilise discourses of innocence, discourses of denial and discourses that avoid complicity. These discourses enabled the narrators to be positioned as victims. Race and racism discourses included othering discourses, discourses of whiteness and discourses of interracial relationships. Through an appeal to these kinds of discourses narrators were able to occupy opposing positions, such as perpetrator, hero, privileged and non-racial. Finally, discourses of redemption were also found to be prominent in the narratives. These comprised of religious discourses and notions of white liberalism. The utilisation of such discourses enabled constructions of the narrators as moral, virtuous and honest.
