Procedural generation is a technique used in video games and other software to generate content algorithmically rather than manually. In this thesis, the method by Kán and Kaufmann (2018) for procedurally generating plausible and virtual scene layouts is extended to use reflective symmetry for synthesis [14]. The altered method is evaluated by its expressive range, computational performance and ability to generate realistic layouts. The method is a greedy search method guided by a cost function of mathematically expressed guidelines for interior design based on established literature on the subject. The expressive range of a generator is the range of styles and varieties of output that it can create. Examining the expressive range of a level generator is done by visualizing a generator’s output as it relates to a set of evaluation metrics [30]. This thesis makes use of expressive range to evaluate the altered method, better understanding benefits of reflective symmetry and drawbacks using the proposed design guidelines by Kán et al. as metrics. Measurements of the number of milliseconds required to generate a layout is also collected for the extended method in order to determine the computational cost. This gives an indication of which context the method is possible to run in. Finally, a two-alternative forced user study was performed using similar methodology as in Yu et al. 2011 in order to examine if the additional use of reflective symmetry improves the method capabilities to generate realistic layouts [37]. The results from the evaluation showed that the additional use of reflective symmetry had a marginal effect on the expressive range, computational cost and ability to generate realistic layouts. However, this conclusion has some uncertainty as the user study had some shortcomings. Furthermore, an error in the implementation of the method had the implication that sometimes the TV in the scene got placed in a strange way, users in the study clearly noticed this which indicates that the TV placement has a high importance for the perceived realism.

Free movement of goods, persons, services and capital within the European Union. Jurisprudential Adjudications by the Court of Justice.Connor, Timothy C. January 2013 (has links)
The published work which forms the basis of this submission by the
applicant for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy represents an extensive
research which has extended the boundaries of knowledge and
understanding in relation to the jurisprudential adjudications by the Court
of Justice concerning the application of the TFEU freedoms of goods,
persons, services and capital to national measures. The publications
maintain thematic analytical focus on the jurisprudential employment of the
EU principles of non discrimination, market access and the rule relating to
the ¿selling arrangement¿ that are used as the modus operandi in the
acquisition of Treaty free movement rights. The thread is law making; the
published work evidences inconsistencies, complexities and confusions in
the application by the Court of Justice of the modus operandi used to
ensure acquisition of Treaty free movement rights. The research depicts a
goods, persons, services and capital jurisprudence which displays a want
of thematically consistent underpinning and some doctrinal diversity. It is
the purpose of this Submission to exhibit the cohesiveness of the
published work under review in the context of the contribution made to the
knowledge and understanding of the jurisprudence of goods, persons,
services and capital in European Union law.

The Strings of The Soul : Encounters Between the Russian Balalaika and the Swedish Keyed FiddleIvanova, Natalya January 2023 (has links)
"The strings of the soul” is a master thesis which explores questions about tradition, itsexpression in music and especially folk music. It illuminates some differences betweentraditional and folk music. It explores Russian and Swedish folk music traditions, comparingboth of the traditions and identifying differences and similarities. The instruments that are used in the project are the Russian balalaika and the Swedish keyedfiddle (nyckelharpa). To implement those ideas in the research and enable these encounters I got in contact withmusicians playing the keyed fiddle. Under the tutorial I got some knowledge in keyed fiddleplaying techniques, its character and uniqueness. I participated in several playing sessions andgot an opportunity to experience Swedish folk music. The aim of this project is to seek a better understanding both of my “native” tradition ofRussian music, as well as of Swedish folk music, by exploring Swedish folk music throughthe performance practices of the balalaika. Hereby I wish to better understand theperformance practice of the Russian balalaika tradition, by using the instrument inperformance of Swedish folk music. The project is guided by the following research questions:How can Swedish folk music best be adapted for the balalaika? In what ways can the traditional performance practice of the balalaika be challenged bymaking arrangements of music originally conceived for the keyed fiddle? Are there any balalaika playing techniques that have the ability to imitate the sound of thekeyed fiddle? What novel possibilities may the balalaika offer to folk music originally conceived for thekeyed fiddle? Are there any difficulties in playing Swedish folk music on the balalaika? As a result of encounter process five arrangements were written, performed and recorded. As the source I used Swedish folk pieces for the keyed fiddle. “Spelmansglädje” - ”Fiddler´sJoy” by Erik Sahlström; “Vi är komna uti flickors land”, trad.; ”Finn Pål´s polska” of PaulDanielsson; ”Järv i säcken”- “Säkkijärvi polka”, trad.; ”Slängpolska efter Byss Kalle”, trad. For me personally, this research has given me the possibility to express myself as a musician,an artist and a researcher. It shows where I´m right now and how all this is related to myexperience as an individual and as a musician. Keywords: tradition; tradition in music; folk music; encounters; playing techniques;knowledge; experience; arrangement.

Technical Optimization of a Long Span Beam made of Glulam ElementsBulgarini, Mario January 2021 (has links)
Timber constructions have during the past two or three decades become more andmore common, mostly due to the easy prefabrication and the cheap, sustainablematerial. For long-span applications it is vital to find design solutions that optimizethe structure from the point of view of material consumption, number of theconnections, structural reliability etc. This thesis focuses on the structural optimization of a long span timber structureearlier developed by a Swedish glulam company for industry buildings and sport hallapplications. The main goal of this study has been the minimization of the volume ofwood required to built the structure, given a set of geometrical restrictions and theassigned loads. The optimal shape of the structure and the arrangement of the different elementshas been investigated by means of theoretical analyses taking into account theprincipal directions of stress which would occurr in similar structures with massivecross sections. The results of this investigations give some guidelines to design newtypes of structures, where both mechanical efficiency and manufacturing issues havebeen taken into consideration.Comparisons of the structural models proposed in this thesis with the originalproposal provided by the Swedish glulam company conclude the work, suggestingsome possible improvements.

FLEXIBLE WORK ARRANGEMENTS: TECHNOLOGY ENABLING EMERGING POPULATIONS OF MILLENNIALS AND BABY BOOMERSWEBSTER, SANDI January 2018 (has links)
The official standard of a 40-hour work week has not changed for decades in the United States. A flexible work arrangement (a.k.a. telework, flexible schedule or telecommuting) is an alternative to the traditional 9am to 5pm, 40+hours work week in office. In truth, the working environment has changed as employees are expected to work more than 40 hours per week and must be accessible around the clock on weekends and after the end of the workday. Millennials and Baby Boomers (called the emerging populations) are pushing the agenda on flexible work arrangements and getting more flexible schedules. Technology makes this all possible. Millennials are described as the always-connected-to-the-internet generation (Choney, 2012), while any new technological process requires significant instruction and training, and presents a challenge for older workers (Charness, 2006). This grounded theory research (Glaser and Strauss, 1999) informs and updates academics, practitioners, companies, and employees on how technology is enabling flexible working arrangements (referred to as FWA) for the emerging populations. The paper draws on both unstructured interviews and a survey with key informants across age ranges who are business owners, corporate workers, and employees. It explores the tools that are critical to connecting to the office, the advantages and disadvantages of working outside the office, and gives guidelines for employers and workers to utilize when creating a best-in-class flexible environment. Keywords: flexible work arrangement, flexible schedule, millennials, baby boomers, telecommuting, work-life conflict, technology, best practices, emerging populations / Business Administration/Human Resource Management
