[pt] O PROFANO DO SAGRADO: ANÁLISE DA TERRITORIALIDADE DA POLÍTICA DE REPRESENTAÇÃO DE AGENTES EVANGÉLICOS NO RIO DE JANEIRO / [en] THE PROFANE OF SACRAD: ANALYSIS OF TERRITORIAITY OF REPRESENTATION POLITICS OF EVANGELICAL AGENTS IN RIO DE JANEIRO

MARCELLE DA SILVA DE SOUZA 23 December 2021 (has links)
[en] In recent decades, Brazil has shown characteristics of a change in the structure of religiosity, with traditional religions losing adherents to ascendant religions. Currently, this transitional movement is more evident with the loss of faith in Catholicism and the gain of faith in the Assembly of God. The phenomenon, however, stands out in areas beyond the religious, spreading through institutional politics, through the electoral process. This action in the political way is seen by the media and by society as a risk to democracy and social diversity. Therefore, through the analysis of the electoral process, through the territoriality of political action, and parliamentary actions, this research aimed to identify the foundations of fear. The analysis consisted of verifying the performance of two councilors, in the 10th legislature of the city of Rio de Janeiro, linked to two fragmentations of the traditional Assembly of God. They are Eliseu Kessler, linked to the Assembly of God Ministry Madureira and Alexandre Isquierdo, linked to the Vitória em Cristo Assembly of God. To investigate the fundamentals and potential of the issue, the polling places and confluences between the spatiality of the churches were analyzed in order to verify whether the election of representatives was an institutional investment or not; in addition to laws and bills authored by parliamentarians, in order to verify possible losses to democratic values from these administrations.

Investigating factors relevant to a multicultural HIV/AIDS Curriculum for Assemblies of God

Johns, Emily M. Busiek 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Curriculum Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / The HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa has reached pandemic levels, with over 1 000 deaths per day. The church in South Africa represents a largely untapped resource for addressing this problem. One of the largest Evangelical church groups in South Africa is the Assemblies of God (AOG/SA). This church group consists of three culturally distinct fraternals: The Group (white), The Association (coloured), and The Movement (black). Although they function under one executive committee, these fraternals have remained organizationally distinct even after the dismantling of apartheid laws in 1991. On the issue of HIV/AIDS, all three fraternals have remained largely quiet and uninvolved. They have made no attempt to strategize on a unified response to the pandemic, nor have they attempted to promote culturally relevant curricula capable of empowering their pastors and theological students to respond effectively to this crisis. The research consisted of two phases, following Rothman and Thomas's Intervention Research model (1994), with special emphasis on the design and development component. The first phase identified and assessed educational, cultural, and religious factors relevant to the development and delivery of a clergy-focused multicultural curriculum intervention addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. Data-gathering strategy for the first phase consisted of semi-structured interviews with ethnographic notions. The target groups for the first phase of the research included 15 credentialed AOG/SA pastors and the three fraternal leaders. The leaders and fraternal members participated in semistructured interviews designed to establish cultural and religious points of divergence pertaining to topics surrounding the AIDS pandemic (e.g. sickness, death, sexuality and gender roles). The second phase of the research consisted of the development and delivery of a curriculum intervention. Integrating the cultural and religious factors identified in the first phase of the research, the nine-day curriculum intervention was presented to 34 tertiary-level theological students in two culturally distinct venues. The content of the curriculum primarily emphasized aspects of gender, tradition, and culture as they relate to HIV/AIDS and surrounding issues. The intervention utilized three curriculum theories that were deemed relevant to the educational context of South Africa: humanistic curriculum theory, social reconstructionist curriculum theory and dialogue curriculum theory. Data-gathering strategies for the second phase of the research utilized both quantitative and qualitative instruments with ethnographic notions. The quantitative instruments included the Scale of Basic HIV/AIDS Knowledge (SHAK), Personal Reflections of Men with HIV/AIDS (PRM) and Personal Reflections of Women with HIV/AIDS (PRW). Reflective journaling was used to acquire qualitative data from student participants. Scores significantly improved on the SHAK in both venues. Scores on the PRW improved in both venues, significantly so in one. Unexpectedly, scores on the PRM declined at both venues, although not significantly so. Males with HIV/AIDS were viewed more negatively by both genders at the end of the intervention in both venues. Reflective journal entries indicated that students at both venues clearly perceived a need for the church to be involved in the pandemic; many proposed that sex education should be taking place within the context of church youth ministry. Affective responses were markedly positive for those suffering with AIDS, particularly females. The data clearly indicated that the curriculum was effective in two culturally distinct venues.

The present work intends to study the Brazilian Pentecostal movement through one of its major institutions, the Igrejas Evangélicas Assembleias de Deus (Assemblies of God Evangelical Churches) - AGs. With an approach anchored in the interdisciplinary dialogues with the Social Sciences, recommended by the New Cultural History, we analyze the changes in the identity of the classical assembly, in the process of accommodation to the society of consumers, a fact that we call the aggiornamento of the assemblian Pentecostalism. Founded by the Swedish Missionaries Daniel Berg and Gunnar Vingren in 1911, the AGs started the Pentecostal movement in partnership with the Christian Congregation of Brazil (CCB). One hundred years after its founding, they are found in most of the Brazilian municipalities and, according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) census, they already have over 12 million followers. Although the temporality of the survey is limited to the period from 1980 to 2010, a historical analysis was carried out, dating back to the 19th century, in search of its original influences. One of the axes that guided the research was the idea that religious institutions representing Christianity always reflected the society of its time. Based on this premise, it was possible to perceive that the AGs conformed to the characteristics of Brazilian society in each phase of its history: they were ascetic and sectarian when the society was rural and very poor; propagated an exacerbated patriarchal authoritarianism when women could not vote and did not have their rights guaranteed by law; they were not involved in political parties and did not manifest themselves publicly repudiating social injustices; his discourse and theological standard prevailed for a life of behavioral austerity and resigned waiting for the apocalyptic return of Jesus Christ. Faced with a socioeconomic and cultural reality in constant transformation, under the influence of consumer capitalism and, in order to face competition in the religious field, especially after the arrival of neo-Pentecostal churches, the institution implemented significant changes, which accelerated the process of transformation of ethos. Categories such as consumption, identity, relativism, secularization, pluralism, religious freedom, representations, strategies and tactics, present time, among others, supported the construction of the research object. The studies are focused on the General Convention of Assemblies of God in Brazil - CGADB and the AGs of the city of Imperatriz, Brazil.

The theological denomination "Ministries" tells about the organization of these denominations and arrange on their dynamic, ramification process of the church and as their divergences and strategy of domination. Starting from the investigations of historical documents and studies of empirical data - primary sources - and the studies about origins and foundation of IPAD, this current research exposes the mythic origins, the history about this denomination, discourse and analysis its logic of operation. The ADs ministries follow theirs objective profiles in certain moments or situations, not necessarily according with the pre-established or situations, keep these traditional patterns in others questions and enlarge his continuity of works by consentment, or by "fraternal ties" between the ministries and the churches. The typologies about power written by Max Weber, the field concept written by Pierre Bourdieu, ideological concepts and hegemony offers a theoric arsenal to this analysis, about speech and "ministerial" practice of ADs churches / O presente estudo investiga a lógica dos Ministérios das Igrejas Pentecostais Assembleias de Deus (IPAD).

The aim of this research is to analyze and discuss the changes taking place in the Assemblies of God‟s conception of eschatology, studied according to the International Congress of the Missionary Gideons of the Latter Hour. For such, we seek to comprehend the eschatology that rules the aforementioned denomination from its doctrinal writings, which allow to establish a model very close to the classical Pentecostalism. This model is described according to the way Pentecostals interact with the world, adopting an ascetic and sectarian ethos promoted by the hope they had to live the future time, considering that only parousia would bring definitive and immediate comfort facing the idiosyncrasies of the modern world. From the analysis of the Congress it is remarkable that, even corroborating some points considered essential to classical Pentecostalism, there is a mix of new convictions coming from the sermons delivered at the event. These convictions are closer to another model of Pentecostalism, the one that values aspects such as the prosperity theology, the pragmatism, the immediatism and the anthropocentrism, features of what is currently known in Brazil as Neopentecostalism. Once these features are found in an atmosphere that represents the classical Pentecostalism, one can notice some conflicts in relation to Pentecostal theology, especially regarding its eschatology, and therefore justifying the title of this Master thesis: the neopentecostalization of classical Pentecostalism.

Addressing christian and Xhosa cultural obstructions towards women ministerial and christian leadership development in the OR Tambo District, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Jali, Aiden Monwabisi January 2020 (has links)
The research study focuses on the prejudices women encounter in both the church and society concerning the recognition of their leadership potential. Women’s leadership is largely defined by men in their cultural context. The church also imposes expectations on traditional African churchwomen, which seem contradictory to what the Word of God teaches. This condition is ironically supported by men who do not necessarily go to church because of their cultural convictions. Thus, the dissertation argues extensively that this untenable situation needs to be challenged. The study interacts with Biblical texts that are often subjected to erroneous interpretation drawn in support of oppressive cultural practises and used to militate against women leadership. The approach is not entirely subjective as it considers the perspectives of some renowned African theological writers, readers as well as women role models in exploring the extent of women’s burgeoning in leadership positions in the Assemblies of God (AoG) church in the O R Tambo district Eastern Cape, South Africa. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. [en] POLITICS, PULPIT AND POWER: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CULTIC AND THE SOCIOPOLITICAL DIMENSIONS OF FAITH AT THE ASSEMBLIES OF GOD IN BRAZIL / [pt] POLÍTICA, PÚLPITO E PODER: A RELAÇÃO ENTRE AS DIMENSÕES CÚLTICA E SOCIOPOLÍTICA DA FÉ NAS ASSEMBLEIAS DE DEUS NO BRASIL

BRUNO DA SILVEIRA ALBUQUERQUE 03 October 2019 (has links)
[en] The thesis discusses the relationship between the cultic and the sociopolitical dimensions of the Christian faith, expressed in the historical itinerary of the Assemblies of God in Brazil, in the light of the confrontation of anthropological dualism, in view of its necessary overcoming. The research work undertook a theological rereading of the ways in which the denomination in focus developed expressions of Christian faith in the Brazilian religious field. The research also evaluated this specific Church s participation in the public sphere. We identified in this context an instrumentalization of both worship and politics. Thus, such instrumentalization satisfies some of the logics that carry the mark of dualism. Therefore, our research presents a proposal for an integrated articulation between the described dimensions, including the process of overcoming dualism as a discernment and practical consequence of the action of the Holy Spirit in the Church. In this sense, the theological path to an integrated Pentecostal experience is delineated.
