A circuit model BOSS simulation of nonlinear effects in long distance fiber optic systemsMehta, Shilpa D. 11 July 2009 (has links)
The combined effect of group velocity dispersion (GVD) and nonlinearity limits the transmission distance of fiber optic communication systems. By designing a circuit that can model this effect and simulating it using the Block Oriented Systems Simulator (BOSS), we can study the pulse distortion and broadening that may occur. The nonlinearity considered here is self-phase modulation (SPM). A loop system is designed where each pass of the system corresponds to 200 km of fiber. The system mainly consists of a Butterworth bandpass filter which models the dispersion in the fiber and a VCO that imposes a phase modulation on the input signal thus modeling the intensity dependent phase shift due to SPM. By changing various parameters of the circuit, the dispersion limited distance, the nonlinearity limited distance and other related factors can be altered. With D=-0.04 ps/km.nm, the effect of changing the nonlinear limited distance and thus the nonlinear effect is studied and simulated. The results are compared with a simple theoretical model for pulse broadening that has appeared in the literature. Although the simulation results exhibit the same qualitative behavior as the theory, there are significant quantitative differences. The reason for these differences are discussed. / Master of Science

Late medieval roof bosses in the churches of DevonAndrew, Susan January 2011 (has links)
The extensive survival of late medieval bosses in the roofs of many parish churches in Devon has long been recognised. These carvings escaped the widespread destruction of images during the Reformation through their relative inaccessibility, and yet most have never before been recorded; nor has systematic study been made of their design, their positioning within a sacred space, or the ways in which they may have been viewed and used by a largely illiterate audience. This thesis rectifies this oversight in its detailed documentation and photography of figural roof bosses and contextual information from 121 churches across the county, appended as a gazetteer, and in its thorough analysis, which considers the varied interactions between the people of the parish and their carvings. The thesis reviews the literature on roof bosses in Britain, particularly the work of C.J.P. Cave whose studies have hitherto dominated the field, before considering materiality and method, namely the properties of oak, the dating of the timber, the carvers and the carving process, and the surface finish and visibility of roof bosses. The social, religious, and decorative context is then discussed, especially the role of ecclesiastical authorities in the life of the parish church and its people, and the motivation of patrons, clergy and laity in the decoration of their parish church. An exploration of motifs carved on roof bosses follows, with these motifs linked to other images within the parish church, the cathedral and the wider world, to the words of the sermon and the confessional, and to scriptural texts and popular literature. Medieval understandings of vision are considered, as are the circumstances in which roof bosses may have been seen and used. The thesis argues, in particular, that many bosses may have served as mnemonic devices and aids to prayer in a penitential process which sought to cure the soul of sin. The thesis concludes with case studies of six parish churches from across Devon which confirm that these carvings should be recognised as a significant resource for our understanding of the late medieval parish church and its people in the Diocese of Exeter and beyond.

Special Interpersonal Relationships in Project-Based OrganizationsJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: The success or failure of projects is not determined only by procedures, tasks, and technologies, but also by the project team and its effectiveness. In order to lead project teams towards successful outcomes, project managers must maintain high quality relationships in the workplace. When looking at employees’ relationships in the workplace, Social Exchange Theory introduces two types of exchanges: employee-organization and leader-member exchanges. While both types of exchanges focus exclusively on the employee’s longitudinal relationships, the interpersonal relationships among the team members are usually overlooked.
This research presents the results of a quantitative study of the interpersonal relationships of 327 project managers and assistant project managers in their workplace. Specifically, the study investigates if the quality of the relationship with particular stakeholders, such as one’s immediate supervisor (boss), peers, or subordinates, drives the individual’s quality of the relationship with other stakeholders.
Contrary to the expectations, in strictly hierarchical organizations (one direct supervisor), there is no significant correlation between the quality of relationships with the boss and the overall quality of the individual’s relationships. However, in the case of matrix organizations (two or three bosses), there are significant correlations between several variables such as the quality of the relationship, perceived importance and the time spent with each stakeholder, as well the inclination of the participant towards leadership actions. The driving relationship in matrix organizations is the one with “the most important peer”. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering 2019

One-Dimensional Power Spectrum and Neutrino Mass in the Spectra of BOSSBorde, Arnaud 27 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
The framework of the studies presented in this thesis is the one-dimensional power spectrum of the transmitted flux in the Lyman-alpha forests. The Lyman-alpha forest is an an absorption pattern seen in the spectra of high redshift quasars corresponding to the absorption of the quasar light by the hydrogen clouds along the line of sight. It is a powerful cosmological tool as it probes relatively small scales, of the order of a few Mpc. It is also sensible to small non-linear effects such as the one induced by massive neutrinos.First, we have developed two independent methods to measure the one-dimensional power spectrum of the transmitted flux in the Lyman-alpha forest. The first method is based on a Fourier transform, and the second on a maximum likelihood estimator. The two methods are independent and have different systematic uncertainties. The determination of the noise level in the data spectra was subject to a novel treatment, because of its significant impact on the derived power spectrum. We applied the two methods to 13,821 quasar spectra from SDSS-III/BOSS DR9 selected from a larger sample of over 60,000 spectra on the basis of their high quality, large signal-to-noise ratio, and good spectral resolution. The power spectra measured using either approach are in good agreement over all twelve redshift bins from =2.2 to =4.4, and scales from 0.001 (km/s)^−1 to 0.02 (km/s)^−1. We carefully determined the methodological and instrumental systematic uncertainties of our measurements. Then, we present a suite of cosmological N-body simulations with cold dark matter, baryons and neutrinos aiming at modeling the low-density regions of the IGM as probed by the Lyman-alpha forests at high redshift. The simulations are designed to match the requirements imposed by the quality of BOSS and eBOSS data. They are made using either 768^3 or 192^3 particles of each type, spanning volumes ranging from (25 Mpc/h)^3 for high-resolution simulations to (100 Mpc/h)^3 for large-volume ones. Using a splicing technique, the resolution is further enhanced to reach the equivalent of simulations with 3072^3 = 29 billion particles of each type in a (100 Mpc/h)^3 box size, i.e. a mean mass per gas particle of 1.2x10^5 solar masses. We show that the resulting power spectrum is accurate at the 2% level over the full range from a few Mpc to several tens of Mpc. We explore the effect on the one-dimensional transmitted-flux power spectrum of 4 cosmological parameters (n_s, sigma_8, Omega_m ,H_0), 2 astrophysical parameters (T_0, gamma) related to the heating rate of the IGM and the sum of the neutrino masses. By varying the input parameters around a central model chosen to be in agreement with the latest Planck results, we built a grid of simulations that allows the study of the impact on the flux power spectrum of these seven relevant parameters. We improve upon previous studies by not only measuring the effect of each parameter individually, but also probing the impact of the simultaneous variation of each pair of parameters. We thus provide a full second-order expansion, including cross-terms, around our central model. We check the validity of the second-order expansion with independent simulations obtained either with different cosmological parameters or different seeds for the initial condition generation. Finally, a comparison to the one-dimensional Lyman-alpha forest power spectrum obtained in the first part with BOSS data shows an excellent agreement.Eventually, even if there are still some potential biases and systematic errors that need to be studied in our simulation, we performed cosmological fits combining our measurement of the one-dimensional power spectrum and other cosmological probes such as the CMB results provided by Planck. These preliminary results are very encouraging as they lead to some of the tighest cosmological constraints as of today, especially on the sum of the neutrino masses with an upper limit of 0.1 eV.

Diaspora missiology : the emerging apostolic role of Chinese migrants in Africa and Middle East colligate with Trinitarian Missio Dei / John Robert GordyGordy, John Robert January 2015 (has links)
Missio Dei is a phrase used to describe the mission of God, as revealed in Scripture.
One of the key verses to understanding the ultimate goal of God’s mission is the vision
of heaven given to the Apostle John in the Book of Revelation, “After this I looked and
there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe,
people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb…” (Rev 7:9).
God’s mission is to have for Himself a special redeemed people from every ‘People
Group’ on earth. In Trinitarian Missio Dei, God is a ‘sending’ God, who sent Himself in
pursuit of lost mankind; who sent His Son, Jesus to bear the sins of a lost world upon
His body on the Cross; and who sent the Holy Spirit to instruct and empower the
Church, which is commissioned and sent forth to carry on His mission of having a
people from among all ‘Peoples’ of the earth. The shift in the center of gravity of world
Christianity from the Global North to the Global South can be seen as God’s divine
orchestration in raising up a mighty army, who will take the Gospel to the remaining
unreached, unengaged ‘Peoples’. The Chinese house church networks have sensed
God’s calling to take the Gospel ‘back to Jerusalem’ crossing the Buddhist, Hindu, and
Muslim worlds, along the ancient eastern Silk Routes. As part of this Global South
migration, Chinese are already living in over 140 countries around the world, where
many of these unreached ‘People Groups’ are located. We see the Nestorian ‘merchant
missionaries’ as a model for Chinese migrants to fulfill God’s calling to complete the
‘Great Commission’ mandate. / PhD (Missiology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Previous issue date: 2010-05-21 / This study aimed at identifying compatibilities between Jacob Levy Moreno s
psychodrama and Medard Boss s Daseinsanalysis in psychotherapeutic practice. Both
approaches rose from the same historical context, with common origins in the vein of
philosophical existential phenomenology. Moreno s professional trajectory was
presented, referencing his four creative moments and the concepts and
psychotherapeutic practices that arose in each of these moments. Daseinsanalysis s
founding principles and its method of psychotherapeutic treatment, which was proposed
by Boss drawing from Heideggerian ontology, are reviewed. Fundamental similarities
in their psychotherapeutic practice were found in Moreno s Psychodrama and Boss s
Daseinsanalysis, which are then shown through examples of Moreno s and Boss
conduction of clinical cases. The compatibilities were verified in both authors
practices. Without damaging psychodramatic methodology, Moreno acts as a
daseinsanalyst when welcomes patients as they are, offering the possibility to
understand and transform their being-in-the-world. In the same way, maintaining
loyalty to the daseinanalytical method, Boss acts as a psycho dramatist when he enables
his patient to experience his childlike state in a spontaneously creative way, offering a
shelter for her to re-live principal moments of his childhood. From those identified
compatibilities, it is contended that psychotherapists and adherents to psychotherapy
can benefit from the integration of the two approaches, since they coexist without
opposition. A psychodramatist can, thanks to his psychotherapeutic practices, exercise
Bossian Daseinanalysis and daseinanalysts can, in their psychotherapeutic practices,

Behavioral Outcomes of the BOSS Teaching Program With Adults With Intellectual DisabilitiesNeedham, Mick 01 January 2018 (has links)
Despite an abundance of research on interventions to improve social skills of young children with intellectual disabilities (ID), there is limited research on interventions aimed at improving social skills of adults with ID. The purpose of this single-subject study was to evaluate the outcomes of the Behavioral Opportunities for Social Skills (BOSS) teaching program for adults with ID. The theoretical framework for this study was Skinner's operant conditioning which incorporates the principles of applied behavior analysis, reinforcement, and operant extinction. After direct support professionals were trained in the BOSS teaching program, research questions were used to determine (a) changes in the frequency of praise statements given by direct support professionals to adults with ID; (b) differences in the frequency of cooperative and polite behaviors of adults with ID; and (c) increases or decreases in the frequency of challenging behaviors exhibited by adults with ID. A multiple-baseline design across participants and settings was used to evaluate the behavioral changes. Prosocial behaviors of 3 adults with ID and 3 direct support professionals' delivery of specific praise statements showed visually discernable increases and large effect sizes (ES -?¥ 0.92). The outcomes of this study contribute to positive social change as demonstrated by the positive behavioral changes achieved by the adults with ID who increased their prosocial behaviors and the direct support professionals who increased their delivery of specific praise statements following the implementation of the BOSS teaching program.

Cooperative Interval GamesAlparslan Gok, Sirma Zeynep 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Interval uncertainty affects our decision making activities on a daily basis making the data structure of intervals of real numbers more and more popular in theoretical models and related software applications. Natural questions for people or businesses that face interval uncertainty in their data when dealing with cooperation are how to form the coalitions and how to distribute the collective gains or costs. The theory of cooperative interval games is a suitable tool for answering these questions. In this thesis, the classical theory of cooperative games is extended to cooperative interval games. First, basic notions and facts from classical cooperative game theory and interval calculus are given. Then, the model of cooperative interval games is introduced and basic definitions are given. Solution concepts of selection-type and interval-type for cooperative interval games are intensively studied. Further, special classes of cooperative interval games like convex interval games and big boss interval games are introduced and various characterizations are given. Some economic and Operations Research situations such as airport, bankruptcy and sequencing with interval data and related interval games have been also studied. Finally, some algorithmic aspects related with the interval Shapley value and the interval core are considered.
