Darwinian social evolution as a theory of social changeKerr, William Fraser January 2018 (has links)
This thesis investigates the use of a reconceptualised social evolutionary theory for understanding and explaining how and why societies change, specifically looking at this question through the frame of nationalism. The thesis is split into three parts: in the first part I first examine older forms of social evolutionary theory (conceptions from Marx, Spencer and generalized evolutionary accounts) and critique them on the grounds that they are too ‘progressive’ in character, suffer from teleology and have a notion that all societies change linearly, i.e. pass through the same set of stages. After this I elaborate on a reconstructed version of social evolutionary theory, taking it along more Darwinian lines: that the process should be understood as contingent and non-linear, where cultural variants and social intuitions change in response to selective pressures brought about by environmental conditions. To reconstruct social evolution I draw mainly on accounts from Runciman (2009), Hodgson and Knudsen (2010), Sperber (1996), Hull (1988) and Richerson and Boyd (2006). In the second part of the thesis I look at four different theories of social change and utilize Darwinian social evolutionary theory to critique them. The four in question are: Immanuel Wallerstein (world-systems theory); Michael Hechter (rational-choice theory); Michael Mann (sources of social power); and Ernest Gellner (functionalism). These four theories were chosen as they either have, or represent, different theories of social change, and also because they are all concerned to some extent with the rise of the nation-state and nationalism. The main argument in this section is that Darwinian social evolutionary theory can incorporate elements of these theories whilst also going beyond them in explaining and understanding why societies undergo changes. In the case of Mann and Gellner I also note that they are, to a certain extent, implicitly relying on a social evolutionary account, and that drawing this out more explicitly helps provide greater theoretical solidity to their arguments. In the final part of the thesis I apply the theory to two case-studies, looking at the rise of nationalism in Britain (with a focus on England) and Japan. In both cases I examine each development of nationalism historically, using Darwinian social evolution to assess why nationalism emerged at the point that it did in each case, and not before. A final synthesis chapter then looks comparatively at the two cases and applies Darwinian social evolutionary theory to address the question of why nationalism generated in England/Britain, but did not in Japan and why the nationalist movements took the forms that they did. The chapter centres on three main themes, the role of war in forming identities, the role of variation in generating institutions, and the role of lineages in creating continuity in discontinuity. Finally it address the question of why nationalism became the dominant movement and not something else. Together this demonstrates demonstrate the usefulness of the framework for addressing questions concerning social change, in providing a different perspective and insights from other theories of social change. A final chapter summarizes and concludes the thesis, as well as pointing to new directions that research could develop.

Kontinuita v péči o rizikové novorozence / Continuity in the care of newborns at riskDUCHKOVÁ, Marcela January 2017 (has links)
Neonatology is a field of medicine in which immense progress has been seen during the past two decades. As the frontiers of this area are shifting forwards, ethical problems and issues regarding the quality of life of the rescued infants and children grow in importance. Now it is clear that the development and health of children that were endangered in the perinatal period should continue to be followed up by healthcare professionals, sometimes for many years. Ideally, this care should seamlessly follow hospital care. It was the aim of this work to examine how this continuity of care of high-risk newborns is implemented in practice. This Thesis consists of 2 parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part analyses the differentiation of newborn care as outlined in the Bulletin of the Czech Ministry of Health; defines the categories of newborns; and explains the basic terms used in the specific domain of high-risk newborns. Foreign experience in the provision of medical care at hospitals as well as in the continuing care after discharging from the hospital for home care is outlined. The empirical part of the Thesis was compiled based on qualitative research survey, accomplished with 3 aims in mind. The first aim was to map what type of care is provided to high-risk newborns at the Intensive Care & Resuscitation Unit of the Plzeň Teaching Hospital and who provides it. The second aim was to ascertain how the parents perceived their role during in-patient care of their babies and how they were educated and engaged in providing the care. And the last aim was to ascertain how the parents appreciated and liked the follow-up system at the Developmental Care Centre. It was found by the survey that the responders (mothers) appreciated most the comprehensiveness of the care provided by the Centre. They found the care adequate, beneficial and motivating. In their view, the desired care continuity had been achieved. The results attained within the empirical part will be presented at a workshop of the perinatology centre.

In a movement initiated primarily in the United States in the 90s, corporate governance has emerged to overcome the agency conflict resulting from the separation of ownership and management business, creating a powerful set of mechanisms in order to ensure that the behavior of executives is always aligned with the interests of stakeholders. Among these mechanisms, stands out with high importance the business risk management, enabling administrators to deal effectively with the uncertainties and opportunities associated with them in order to improve the ability to provide value to organizations. Efforts to prevent and reduce operational risks introduced good experience in management of interruptions to the critical operations of organizations developing the discipline called Business Continuity Management (BCM). In the development and promotion of best practices GCN, there are the standard series 25999, parts 1 and 2 of the BSI (British Standards Institution) dealing, respectively on a BCM model life cycle and a Business Continuity Management System (SGCN). Starting from a literature review on corporate governance, risk management, business continuity management and management systems, and form the context of GCN in a telecommunications company, has developed a proposed structure to support the implementation of a business continuity management system applied to that organization and found that this deployment is further facilitated by the fact that it is designed from the PDCA – Plan, Do, Check, Act and world-renowned model applicable to other management systems. However, it was felt that the SGCN, and deployed, must be established, improved and maintened continuously and, therefore, sponsorship and commitment from top management is very important.

Auditory Object Segregation: Investigation Using Computer Modelling and Empirical Event-Related Potential MeasuresMorissette, Laurence 12 July 2018 (has links)
There are multiple factors that influence auditory steaming. Some, like frequency separation or rate of presentation, have effects that are well understood while others remain contentious. Human behavioural studies and event-related potential (ERP) studies have shown dissociation between a pre-attentive sound segregation process and an attention-dependent process in forming perceptual objects and streams. This thesis first presents a model that synthetises the processes involved in auditory object creation. It includes sensory feature extraction based on research by Bregman (1990), sensory feature binding through an oscillatory neural network based on work by Wang (1995; 1996; 1999; 2005; 2008), work by Itti and Koch (2001a) for the saliency map, and finally, work by Wrigley and Brown (2004) for the architecture of single feature processing streams, the inhibition of return of the activation and the attentional leaky integrate and fire neuron. The model was tested using stimuli and an experimental paradigm used by Carlyon, Cusack, Foxton and Robertson (2001). Several modifications were then implemented to the initial model to bring it closer to psychological and cognitive validity. The second part of the thesis furthers the knowledge available concerning the influence of the time spent attending to a task on streaming. Two deviant detection experiments using triplet stimuli are presented. The first experiment is a follow-up of Thompson, Carlyon and Cusack (2011) and replicated their behavioural findings, showing that the time spent attending to a task enhances streaming, and that deviant detection is easier when one stream is perceived. The ERP results showed double decisions markers indicating that subjects may have made their deviant detection based on the absence of the time delayed deviant and confirmed their decision with its later presence. The second experiment investigated the effect of the time spent attending to the task in presence of a continuity illusion on streaming. It was found that the presence of this illusion prevented streaming in such a way that the pattern of the triplet was strengthened through time instead of separated into two streams, and that the deviant detection was easier the longer the subjects attended to the sound sequence.

La continuité stéréoscopique : correspondances et discontinuité / Stereoscopic continuity : correspondances and discontinuitiesJacopin, Esther 02 December 2017 (has links)
This work has been driven among the Sciences, Arts, Design and Research doctoral program (SACRe), which relies on a practice-based research. It is therefore made of two stereoscopic 3D (S3D) movies and a dissertation that reports the explorations and our reflexive approach during this three years program. The thesis first focuses on formalising the concept of continuity in cinema. This leads to enlighten elements that permits the continuity to exist on one hand, as well as those required for its understanding on the other hand, so as to define a general model of cinematographic continuity; that reveals itself to be sharing some of its principles with scientific disciplines as well as artistic ones.We then analyse the singular case of stereoscopy, between continuities and discontinuities. This technical and perceptual study enables us to apprehend its specificities, in order to examine the state of continuity in nowadays stereoscopic cinema. This work finally focuses on unexplored artistic possibilities in S3D, among which the enrichment of stereoscopic continuity, inspired by the way architecture and music have treated continuity and discontinuity issues. We have experimented some of these possibilities through two short films, as we report at the end of the dissertation.

This dissertation offers the first musicological study in the Portuguese language extensively dedicated to the work of Frank Zappa (1940-1993). It is also the first work to undertake in-depth analyses of some of his compositions for large orchestra or chamber orchestra, namely the third movement of “Sinister Footwear”, “Outrage At Valdez”, “The Perfect Stranger” and “Naval Aviation In Art?” – the last of which has not been specifically discussed before by any other author. Chapter 1 provides a general outline of Zappa’s life and work, followed by a critical review of the scarce works available on his orchestral music and of the main theoretical references utilized throughout this study, including an introduction to the technique of “harmonic nets” devised by Belgian composer and theoretician Henri Pousseur. This chapter concludes with a brief commentary on the main alternative sources of material (beyond Zappa’s official output) currently available to the scholar. Chapter 2 examines the main technical and stylistic aspects of Zappa’s compositional work, illustrated with analyses of excerpts from several pieces. It discusses the issue of form in the composer’s oeuvre, which is characterized by a strong penchant for discontinuity, in light of Jonathan Kramer’s theory of temporal modes. It also provides an overview of the theories proposed by Brett Clement for studying this repertoire. This chapter thus serves as a conceptual basis for the analyses themselves, gathered in chapter 3, which shows how the composer has effectively applied the procedures and techniques considered in the previous chapter within the framework of an objective discourse, each work according to a clearly outlined musical project. Special attention is given to the various forms of interaction between linear and nonlinear aspects of the musical discourse (concepts discussed by Kramer)... / In this work, the development of a computational tool for the efficient management of maintenance tasks of electrical distribution networks is proposed; optimizing human and material resources, allowing effective actions that preserve the quality of energy supplied to the consumer, thus seeking to meet the criteria established by PRODIST (Procedure for Distribution of Electric Energy in the National Electric System). The problem is treated as a mixed dynamic nonlinear multi-objective optimization model. In the proposed model, it is sought to minimize the costs of performing maintenance tasks on equipment and components of the distribution systems and to maximize their reliability, under the constraints of individual indices of continuity and frequency of electric power supply (DIC and FIC), of the availability of financial resources and maintenance equipment, among others. The modeling is totally focused on the reliability indices of the equipment and components, which are evaluated by an approach involving probabilistic fault models and fuzzy inference systems. For the solution of the model, an evolutionary algorithm NSGA-II is used. / CNPq: 159614/2015-5

Continuidades descontinuadas: reflexões sobre o encontro intersubjetivo com a Arte / Discontinued continuities: reflections on the itersubjective meeting with the artRenata Reinhoefer França 17 March 2008 (has links)
encontro, pela palavra, também em perpétuo acabamento / With the dissertation we aim to reflect upon the enigmatic intersubjective encounter
between observer and work of art. This encounter starts an endless journey in which the
experience of art keeps changing also remaining the same at its core that allows the continuity of
art through the ever-present. But even if we agree that one of the most important truths about art
lie on this human experience, we still often try to direct it to other competencies in order to prove
it right, which tends to diminish the relevance of such an encounter. With this in mind, well
carefully apply some concepts of psychoanalysis, mainly in the field of affective intensities
related to pre-verbal language (as the Uncanny), articulating its relation to art as aesthetic
experience. The never ending process of completeness puts the relationship between observer and
work in perpetual search for an end that never comes. This paradox, far from being something
that stops us, is what really puts us on the move, in search for new significations for what we
dont know. And writing about art, in this sense, is part of this movement towards the unknown,
is what allows us to create from its shadows still keeping its mystery alive

Previous issue date: 2018-04-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / My goal in this work is to understand how John Dewey constructed his concept of experience and its implications for the issues of the theory of history. Dewey's pragmatism, whose core is the concept of experience rooted in the principle of continuity, performed a profound and radical reconstruction of dualistic metaphysics. Dewey did so putting up a naturalistic metaphysics. In opposition to the modern (subjectivist/dualistic) way of conceiving experience, Dewey sought to emphasize its fundamentally relational character. In Dewey’s pragmatism experience means the complex process of interaction between organism and environment (natural/social). In this way, his metaphysics of experience became the basis of all his thinking, especially his theory of inquiry. The main hypothesis of this work is that we can find in deweyan pragmatism a theory of history whose foundation lies in its metaphysics of experience whose core is the principle of continuity and that it guarantees us, on the one hand, the methodological rigor of empirical research and, on the other hand, it endorses the role that the subjectivity of the historian exerts in the act of selection and interpretation of the evidence – with it we can accept fallibilism and be at the same time anti-skeptical in order to avoid relativism.

O acompanhamento terapêutico na assistência e reabilitação psicossocial do portador de transtorno mental / Therapeutic continuity in health care and psychosocial rehabilitation of mental disorder patientsAline Cristina Dadalte Carniel 30 June 2008 (has links)
The psychiatric reform made it possible for transformations to take place in mental health care and therapeutic continuity (TC), as a health care modality and psychosocial rehabilitation of individuals with mental disorders. Since then, therapeutic continuity has broadened its concepts and founded its theoretical bases. Hence, its practice has become increasingly acknowledged by different professionals and valued for the fact it fills the gaps that were left from traditional psychiatric treatments, mainly after the doors to asylums, which used to keep mentally ill individuals cloistered, were completely open and appropriate forms of looking after these patients and rehabilitate them were implemented. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the contribution of TC over the health care process and psychosocial rehabilitation of an individual with mental disorders seen at a Psychosocial Care Center, and chosen with the help of its multiprofessional team. To do this, 16 TC appointments were scheduled, which were carried out at different locations. These meetings were observed and their contents were recorded, summarized, and analyzed according to the qualitative method. The results showed that TC has a very positive contribution in the health care and psychosocial rehabilitation of mental disorder patients, with actions such as: recovering selfesteem, going back to activities the patient did before his mental disorder symptoms appeared, motivation to once again become involved in leisure activities and lead a healthier life among his family and social environment, creating moments of confrontation between his mental condition and reality, which made it possible to change his behavior and improve his quality of life. Thus, it is understood that TC is another therapeutic modality that contributes with the psychosocial rehabilitation of patients with mental disorders. Furthermore, it can be included in the therapeutic plans of mental health care services, since it is a untraditional therapeutic modality totally inserted in the context of psychiatric reform, whose main principle is to change the focus of health care services to individuals with mental disorders.
