Me and YouAndreoni, Nicole 01 January 2010 (has links)
My work seeks to reveal the relationships between woman and man, woman and self, and woman and the space which she inhabits. Through personal memoirs and everyday observations the private becomes public, and moments of intimacy transpire. Intimacy requires dialogue, transparency, reciprocity, and self-disclosure, all things that I have been reflecting upon in my work over the last two years. Relationships are formed within the works and through the experience of the viewer with the art. Figures and abstraction coexist next to one another informing the viewer of things familiar, creating closeness, while also spatially confusing the viewer, creating a distance. Moments are filtered through abstraction and illuminated through touch. These moments, while often small and fractured, combine together to create a full and complete reflection of the self and the other.

Perceived Attractiveness and Personality Attributes: A Gender and Racial AnalysisOlby, Brian C. 05 1900 (has links)
Subjects rated 12 female body shapes with respect to their physical attractiveness, and the extent to which they would be expected to possess various personality characteristics. The shapes were varied using 3 levels of overall weight and 4 levels of body shapeliness. The sample was modified to control for socioeconomic factors and results are based on 297 undergraduates from Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic racial backgrounds.
Loglinear analyses revealed that men and women, regardless of racial background, rated shapely underweight females as most physically attractive, sexy, and ideal for a woman, followed by normal weight figures of similar proportion. African Americans, women in particular, judged the shapely normal weight figures more favorably than the other subjects. Multidimensional scaling and subsequent frequency analyses showed that those figures judged as most attractive, sexy, and ideal were also expected to be fairly emotionally stable, and most successful and interpersonally competitive, but least faithful, kind, and family-oriented. Overweight female shapes, while rated as least physically attractive, sexy, and emotionally stable, were expected to be most family-oriented, kind, and faithful. Shapely normal weight figures were judged to be attractive and sexy, and were assumed to possess a moderate amount of the personality traits in question.
The results suggest that Caucasian and Hispanic subjects prefer shapely underweight women, while African Americans, particularly women, find shapely underweight and shapely normal weight women to be physically appealing. African American women also rate shapely normal weight women favorably with respect to personality traits. This perceptual difference may help inoculate them from developing eating disturbances and account for the low prevalence rate of eating disorders in African Americans compared to women of other racial backgrounds. It is suggested that future research identify those beliefs, values or behaviors that seem to inoculate African American women from developing eating disorders. Once identified, mental health professionals may facilitate their development in those women who are likely to have eating problems.

Le geste suicidaire, enjeux et devenir psychiques : Détresse, hystérisation, passivité / The suicidal gesture between issues and become psychic : Distress, hystericization, passivityAndré, Joanne 09 December 2011 (has links)
The thesis is presented as a path between issues and become of suicidal gesture, traumatic moment, one of whose features is the quality of his registration in time. Something on the side of the elusive try to be understanding over work from multiple perspectives. From crisis to the scene of suicide, the singularity of the suicidal gesture to the singularity of what is psychically altered, rearranged, a reflection based on current clinical, immediate effects of the act, to try to understand mental challenges, to grasp the configuration intrapsychiqu e can 'do' a suicidal act of "solution" to a conflict similar.

Female sexuality is one of the issues which made at once most debate within psychoanalytical community (the "Black continent", Sigmund Freud said). However, we know that Freud, in some texts, let out fragments of an alternative theory: it offers a woman endowed with a vaginal aperture, and whose passive sexual aim is to be penetrated. Where does this desire to receive passively the other into oneself come from? Genital penetration in its passive form is the ultimate instinctual aim of female psycho-sexual development, the one who enables reproduction. However, it seems likely that a psychic representation of it is not the product of a spontaneous generation during the puberty (as Freud sometimes suggested), but that roots in pre-genital period: it relies without fail on the reality of girl or boy's body, which carries a containing-excitable feature. Accordingly, it seems possible to isolate a specific instinctual component, which aims at the passive purpose to be penetrated: a vaginal instinctual component. Influence's phenomena seem paradigmatic of a psychic figuration of penetration. We chose to consider two modalities of it: delusion of control is a resolution, in the psychotic experience area, of the ambivalence towards vaginal desire; under hypnosis, modified state of consciousness favors surrendering to hypnotist's suggestions, in so far as it neutralizes, by diverse processes, subject's resistances, which recover from a refusal of the vaginal.

Boland, McGuckian and Groarke: příroda a já v poezii tří současných irských básnířek / Boland, McGuckian and Groarke: nature and the self in three contemporary Irish women poetsSkálová, Alena January 2012 (has links)
This thesis comprises historical and critical introduction to contemporary women's poetry in Ireland and close reading of three poets of its two latest generations, Eavan Boland, Medbh McGuckian and Vona Groarke. It focuses on her perception of nature and attitude to the relationship between the human self and natural processes and objects. The contextual background to my reading emphasizes the feminist critique of the traditional false images of the woman's self in Irish poetry and politics, and suggests new opportunities of the most recent female poetic voices. The culturally rooted simplifying or even harmful connection between femininity and the fertile land or Catholic ideals of virginity has provoked a lot of indignation among contemporary women poets, and caused abundant literary attempts of its re-negotiation. The authentic poetic representation of the woman's sexual and spiritual connection to the land and nature along with women's subjective use of nature imagery belongs to crucial points of this re-negotiation. It is pursued extensively in all of the poetesses discussed in this paper. My close reading considers the political objectives of the poems and notices different modes of their artistic response to the relevant cultural questions. Nevertheless, it emphasizes also the independence...

This study examines how two lifestyle magazines produce gender through their covers, and how young men and women are affected by the covers in their thoughts on gender constructions. The starting point for the study is Erving Goffman's visual codes describing the portrayal of gender in advertising. By applying Roland Barthes method, semiotic image analysis the result show that the two lifestyle magazines create a relatively stereotypical image of male and female. In the analysis of the cover, for example, posing, clothing choices, color choices and more are taken up for review. How these covers affects young men and women was examined through the qualitative focus group method. The results indicate that both sexes are affected to some extent by these images, where women are more affected by comparison and that they try to adhere to a certain ideal.

[en] TRANSGRESSION MELANCHOLY AND EVIL IN THE WORK OF CORNÉLIO PENNA / [pt] TRANSGRESSÃO MELANCOLIA E MAL NA OBRA DE CORNÉLIO PENNAFLAVIA VIEIRA SANTOS 25 August 2008 (has links)
[pt] A tese se propõe a analisar a obra do escritor Cornélio
Penna (1896-1958).
[en] The purpose of the present study is to analyze the work of
the Brazilian author Cornélio Penna (1896-1958). Through
his work - novels, paintings and drawings - we
have sought to identify a melancholic root that permeates
the above registers. Our study also investigates possible
reasons for the marginal position occupied by the author
within Brazilian modernism, during which most of his work
was produced. In choosing themes little explored at the
time, such as the feminine, and violence within the family
context, the work of Cornelio Penna remains today -70 years
after the publication of his first book - not only little
known to the public in general but difficult to classify
within Brazilian literature.

Entregêneros: representações do feminino na teledramaturgia brasileira / -Ramos, Daniele Gross 25 November 2016 (has links)
Assim, um dos principais objetivos desta tese é debater e problematizar o quanto um produto de entretenimento pode complexificar a vida e o ser humano, servindo de base não apenas para diversão, mas também para reflexão, educação, transformação / EntreGêneros: Female Representations in Brazilian soap operas are doctoral thesis, which seeks to investigate how are built the feminine representations in national teledramatúrgicos products, specifically in series - and its derivations - series / sitcoms and unit. In this study, we continue the previous research, we investigated the importance that the media presence has in contraestigmatização socially minority groups. We believe that the representations that our television drama builds on certain groups are also important to understand the values of our society, as well as restatements or displacement data in the enunciations of these programs, so present in our daily lives. For this research, it was built two databases: the first, from the data of the seven census conducted by the IBGE, between 1950 and 2010, and also of PNADs that range; the second covered topics, directors, writers, actresses who played the main characters and their professions, and other data over the 15 programs surveyed here. During mapping was also made a selection of scenes, which later served for mounting a film build-in short film format. This research encompassed six thematic areas: Loving and Family Relations, Body and Behaviour, Gender and Sexuality, Violence Against Women, Rights, Public Policy and Social Problems and Work, Career and Livelihood, which also served as the scenic subdivision for the film. In addition to the conducted mapping, the survey also includes a discursive analysis, starting with the French AD studies, to be demonstrated at the end of this thesis, which also comes with a contrastive table between the themes over time, as well as a timeline , which measures the intensity of the axes. Thus one of the main objectives of this thesis is to debate and discuss how an entertainment product can complexifying life and the human being, providing the basis not only for fun but also for reflection, education, transformation.
