Rousseau, Pieter Abraham January 2009 (has links)
In the rich diversity of forms of the Christian Church, there are different perspectives on how believers ought to live holy lives and how their sanctification should progress. As such, the piety and sanctification of Christians entail every facet of our lives and the possibility of misunderstanding is ever present, because humans are fallible and at risk to "work" with the Bible in their own fashion. A wrong understanding of sin inevitably leads to error as regards piety. Pietism or mutations /forms thereof may therefore stifle, rather than promote real piety coram Deo, in the Christian faith community and in conducting our everyday lives. The aim of the study is, therefore, to advance genuine piety with Christian believers. The doctrine of successive works of grace and the style or approach in which proponents of the doctrine treat Scripture, were critically examined in the first section of the basis-theory. A hermeneutical position from the reformed perspective was stated. The sovereignty of God and the acknowledged authority of Scripture are both the centre and periphery of the reformed perspective, and from a grammatical-historical paradigm augmented by historical-cultural information, the construct of sin in the understanding of the first New Testament audience was examined. The juxtaposed construct of piety, as the logical opposite of sin, was correspondingly explored. The doctrine of so-called successive works of grace was reviewed analytically in the second phase of the basis-theory and the conclusion was stated that this doctrine is a form of pietism. The usage of Scripture and the terminology utilized by pietistic groupings to establish their doctrine was evaluated from a grammatical-historical point of departure. The aim of the study was to render pastoral assistance to someone who was, or is involved with the successive works of grace variation of pietism. For this reason, the meta-theoretical facet of the study did not focus on an academic study of sources to explain the phenomenon of pietism, but instead believers' experience of the successive works of grace form of pietism was investigated by means of a narrative empirical study. This investigation took place within the margins of the religious experience of three groups of participants in a church that embraces the particular doctrine. The three categories were believers that advocate the doctrine of successive works of grace, believers that abandoned the same and those that disagree with such a doctrine. From the basis-theory and the interpretation of the empirical results, an uncomplicated hermeneutical counselling strategy was put together with due emphasis on the correct understanding of Scriptural information on the topics of sin and piety/sanctification. The aim of the strategy is to educate believers from a Scriptural position and perspective on the indicative-imperative aspects of reconciliation and sanctification in Christ. The perfection of what Jesus has done and our reciprocal faith response is stated and conveyed in the strategy. A model consisting of a number of counselling sessions are suggested to guide believers not to adopt the particular belief or, otherwise, to provide a pastoral, remedial support to assist believers in finding liberation from the doctrine of successive works of grace. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Pastoral)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

Black theology and apartheid theology : an investigation into epitheton theology

Le Roux, Zacharias Petrus 06 1900 (has links)
Black theology and apartheid theology are theologies making use of an epitheton. The use to which the epitheton is put in these theologies is of crucial importance, that is, they are couplet theologies being used in a subjective genitive fashion. The question is whether the couplet becomes a theology of/concerning the epitheton or is it used in an objective genitive fashion. When the epitheton is used in the objective genitive sense it of necessity has to generate an epistemological break in order to distinguish it from orthodox theology. This in turn necessitates a conscientisation of a contextually predicated theology The theology becomes reductive. In this way an epitheton theology forming part of a couplet becomes attenuated and diverges from orthodox theology in the construction of its theology. This can lead to the espousal of heretical teachings. Conclusion: The conclusion arrived at is the objective genitive sense, that an epitheton theology, in for the purpose of advancing a particular secular base or pseudo-theological base for Christian society, once it has gained a life of its own, will lead to heresy unless erroneous or sinful teachings are confessed and repented of. This is a study about the relationship between asceticism and episcopal power in the case of Saint Augustine. That relationship is evaluated in the context of the Donatist controversy, which so much concerned the Catholic bishop of Hippo during long years, especially through the first decade of the fifth century. Firstly, I try to point out the problems and difficulties that the controversy presented to his episcopate, as well as his possibilities of action. Then, I analyze how the use of ascetic values in the organization of the Catholic Church and the engagement of ascetics and monks during his anti-Donatist campaign created new tendencies of expression of the episcopal power. Finally, I consider his efforts to develop a more organized model of monasticism, centered on the episcopal authority, in order to eliminate the tensions between him and the monks / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História

Tal processo é visto como a etapa fundamental e determinante para a consolidação da função episcopal / Abstract: The work entitled "From the institutionalization of the monasticism to the making of the "monachization" of the bishopric in John Cassian and the lerinians's Provence (fourth and fifth centuries)" portrays one of the features of Gaul's Christianity: the emerging of the monk-bishops. This research was directed by reflecting over the causes which turned the monasteries to "bishops' yards" of its highest degree during the unsettled fifth century. Hereupon it was sought to determine the position held by the monks in the Provençal clericalist structure and the role interpreted by them in the enunciating of the socialpolitical ties of the Gauls, as well as the formation of a notion concerning the fundamental authority to exercise power over lands and men from the bishop's part, which was consolidated in the sixth century. In order to develop this research, we relied on a varied source of documents, arising from, in its majority, from the Provence area, in the south of Gaul. The documents used here were ultimately produced in the period between 390 and 470 A.D., which was considered the "golden era" of the Lerins abbey, which was also the origin of the most important bishops of Gaul. In this research attention is also paid to the monkhood perspective presented and uncovered by one of the main theorists of the Gaulish monkhood, John Cassian. Therefore, this work concerns the process of institutionalization of the Provence monastic life, which was laid down by John Cassian and accomplished at Lerins abbey. Such process is seen as a fundamental and determining stage for the strengthening of the Episcopal role / Doutorado / Historia Cultural / Doutor em História

Into the abyss of infidelity : legal proceedings against rebels and enemies to the catholic Church : (Northern and Central Italy, first half of the 14th century)

Parent, Sylvain 26 November 2010 (has links)
In the early 14th century, the first popes of Avignon were confronted with a large movement of protest against their authority in Northern Italy and in the States of the Church at a time when the power of the lords was increasing. Among the main actors of this protest were the members of noble families, such as Matteo Visconti and his sons - Galeazzo, Marco, Luchino, Stefano and Giovanni - in Milano, marquesses Rinaldo and Obizzo d’Este in Ferrare, Federico da Montefeltro in Urbino, as well as other lords or less powerful communities in the March of Ancona or in the duchy of Spoleto. The protest reached a climax of unrest during the pontificate of John XXII (1316-1334). To face those numerous oppositions, legal proceedings were widely used within the usual framework of the temporal jurisdiction or following the more spectacular rules of the officium Inquisitionis. Indeed, in the 1320s, several of those lords were sentenced as rebels to the Church, and as heretics. This PhD offers an analysis of the documents made during those conflicts, located in the archives of the Vatican and of the Vatican Library, and shows how, thanks to legal proceedings, the papacy used the law, ideology and rhetoric to construct a figure of the enemy and of the ghibelin “tyrant”.

Le De gratia noui Testamenti, synthèse de la doctrine augustinienne de la grâce / The De gratia noui Testamenti, synthesis of Augustine’s doctrine of grace

Descotes, Pierre 03 December 2012 (has links)
The De gratia noui Testamenti (= epistula 140), which is both a treatise and a letter composed by the Bishop of Hippo Regius at the beginning of year 412, presents Augustine’s thoughts on the connections between divine grace and human freedom in a remarkably synthetic way, first because of the circumstances in which it was written, which place it at the junction of very different debates, and secondly because of its originality on a literary point of view, which links it to several genres. This thesis comprises three parts. First, we propose an introduction to the treatise, which presents its main aspects – among which, the historical problems it poses, the literary questions it raises and the insight it offers into Augustine’s way of thinking. Then we have established the edition (which corrects that of the CSEL, which dates from the beginning of the 20th century) and the translation from a study of its manuscript tradition. Finally, our commentary strives to enlighten the debatable passages of the epistle in order to highlight its main historical, literary and philosophical interests.

Propagande politique et religieuse dans la "Chanson de la Croisade albigeoise", texte de l'Anonyme / Political and religious propaganda in the "Song of the Albigensian Crusade", section of the anonymous author

Raguin, Marjolaine 19 November 2011 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation is a detailed analysis of the religious and political propaganda in the anonymously authored section of the Song of the Albigensian Crusade, a section generally thought of as reshaping the form and content of the text of its original author, Guilhem de Tudela. Anchored in the field of Occitan medieval literature, this study takes into account interdisciplinary contributions of Christian theology as well as religious, political and military history. This work highlights intertextual connections between sirventés from the period of the Albigensian war and certain aspects of the work of the anonymous author. This study permits a reorientation of scholarship on the identification of the author by bringing attention to the explicit mention of a sponsor. The anonymous author replaces Guilhem de Tudela’s arguments of heresy in the Occitan territories, which justified the crusade, with the notion of inherited lineage to imply that the Southerners were fighting against their dispossession under the command of the Raimondin count of Toulouse. The political discourse in the work is based on religious rhetoric, as the anonymous author understood that only a demonstration of the catholicity of Raimondins could ensure the success of the reconquest; as such he developed an ideology of a counter-crusade. The author insists on a threefold connection to the land consisting of a blood relationship between the Southerners, their lord Raimondin, and territories under the care of a protective God. The anonymous author’s argument is based on two postulates: the betrayal of the French suzerain and the association of its barons with a lying clergy of false preachers.

Les sermons moyen-anglais du manuscrit Bodley 806 : édition critique et étude / The Middle English Sermons from Manuscript Bodley 806 : critical edition and study

Sasu, Elena 22 March 2014 (has links)
The thesis presents a study and a critical edition of manuscript Bodley 806 which contains a complete cycle of Sunday sermons from the late fourteenth-early fifteenth century. The study begins by laying out the historical and ideological scenes of the time in order to focus, in the second chapter, on the nature of the edition and the peculiarities it presents, along with the position of the compiler (such as it can be deduced from the text he is compiling). The fourth part of the study presents a complete physical description of the manuscript, its history as well as its structure and language, while the fifth focuses on those elements supporting the theory according to which the manuscript was compiled by a single person and that its text has influenced other texts from other manuscripts (although Bodley 806 is not their ultimate source). The last part of the study presents the general conclusions drawn after the establishment and study of the text, as well as the editorial procedures and principles applied to the text. After the study follows the critical edition of the text contained in manuscript Bodley 806 along with its critical apparatus and explanatory notes after each sermon, as well as a glossary and three indices: one of biblical quotations, one of non-biblical ones and one of proper names.

Love Your Enemy Evangelical Opposition to Mormonism and Its Effect upon Mormon Identity

Bowen, Derek J. 10 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Evangelical Protestant Christians have been one of the primary groups opposing Mormons since the beginnings of Mormonism in the 1820s. This thesis is an examination of the historical basis for Evangelical opposition to Mormonism and the impact of that opposition on Mormon identity. This study is divided into three chronological chapters representing the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries in America. Evangelical animosity towards Mormonism was grounded in the Christian heretical tradition begun in the second century AD. Because of this tradition, Evangelicals were inherently afraid of heresy for two main reasons: temporal treason and eternal damnation. Due to the heterodox claims of a new prophet and new scripture, Mormonism was quickly labeled as dangerous, not only to Christianity, but to America as a whole. This perceived danger only grew as Mormonism continued to differentiate itself further with the practices of polygamy, communalism, and theocracy. In the nineteenth century, Mormon assimilation of Evangelicalism primarily affected the social structures of marriage, economics, and politics. In the twentieth century, Mormon assimilation of Evangelical identity would focus more on the incorporation of Evangelical ideology and theology. As Fundamentalism and Neo-Evangelicalism protested Mormonism as a cult, Mormonism became more Fundamentalist and Evangelical by nature, especially as the Church of Jesus Christ of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognized how such opposition negatively impacted American public perceptions. Such changes included the development of Mormon neo-orthodoxy with its emphasis on the sovereignty of God, the depravity of man, and salvation by grace. In the twenty-first century, a group of Mormon and Evangelical scholars engaged in the practice of interfaith dialogue developed by Liberal Protestants and Catholics. As part of their dialogue, Evangelicals retained the purposes of evangelism and apologetics thereby qualifying the dialogue as a new more subtle form of Evangelical opposition to Mormonism in the twenty first century. As Evangelicals continuously opposed Mormonism as a Christian heresy, such opposition effected changes within Mormonism, changes that have led to some degree of assimilation and even adoption of several elements of Evangelicalism. The most recent part of this assimilation process has been the development of Mormon progressive orthodoxy that emphasizes anti-sectarianism, anti-liberalism, and revised supernaturalism.
