Real Estate Construction and Holding Companies (RECHCOs) have been used by governments in the Arab world as a vehicle for stimulus to promote development. This thesis will examine two particular examples of RECHCOs within city centres: Solidere in Beirut and Abdali in Amman. The RECHCOs in these instances were completely private companies presented as the inevitable choice for the rehabilitation of the centre to create a modern downtown, accompanied by a slew of benefits including job creation, investment, increased tourism potential, and upgraded infrastructure. In return the RECHCOs received political support, public subsidies, tax incentives and exemptions, and the right to expropriate privately owned land, generally reserved for governments. The thesis aims to explore this narrative through the lens of RECHCOs' impact on Arab cities' citizens. It will make the argument that though RECHCOs seem to be appealing and easy tools for contemporary cities they do not live up to their promises of political, economic and social benefits, especially as seen from the perspective of city citizens. The thesis contributes a comprehensive empirical case study to the literature on the modern Arab world, which to date has not explored the impacts of projects such as RECHCOs. The research included stakeholder interviews, a representative sample survey of over 1,500 Amman residents, a comprehensive literature review, a thorough media review, a legislative review, examination of company records, and data gathering from government databases and published statistics. Within three chapters dealing with the social, political and economic impacts of RECHCOs, the case studies presented are discussed across several themes central to urban planning literature both in the context of the Arab city and beyond. The Thesis includes a discussion of the role of the city centre within the city, and the RECHCOs' diminishing effect which undermines the centre as a place of society, gathering, economy and politics. The Thesis looks at heritage and memory in the city in the context of RECHCOs whereby as a consequence of ignoring established traditions in cities RECHCOs have a detrimental impact. RECHCOs undercut political processes, bypass social and traditional heritage, and destroy physical historical structures. RECHCOs are framed within an examination of privatised and contested public space within cities. The new RECHCO downtowns are physically isolated and privately guarded. They are housed with exclusive functions, high-end luxury commercial establishments, and highly priced residential and office space. Previous residents are priced out of the area through gentrification, and the economic windfalls of RECHCOs are diverted towards transnational investors and local elite with limited distributional and trickle-down benefits. The subsequent exclusive – and segregated - space created by the RECHCO gives rise to a sense of antagonism amongst city citizens. RECHCOs thus interrupt the interaction between public space and participation damaging active citizenship within the city. The thesis frames RECHCOs as a tool of urban governance and policies, in the context of weakened local governments and the alienation of citizens. The thesis concludes with a series of lessons learnt.

[pt] O presente trabalho apóia-se nos pressupostos da Psicologia da cultura que visa apreender as modalidades pelas quais se constrói e se expressa a pessoa em determinada cultura e, a partir desta observação, tenta compreender aspectos fundamentais da realidade humana (Augras, 1995). No bojo do imaginário sóciohistórico brasileiro, recorta o universo religioso referido como afro, focalizando os pretos-velhos, figuras de destaque neste campo. Um diálogo com autores das ciências sociais (Geertz, 1989; Berger, 1985; Bourdieu, 2004 et al.) põe em evidência as dinâmicas sócio-históricas que delineiam seus papéis, dentre estes, os de personagens de avôs e avós, junto dos quais os fiéis buscam conselhos e proteção. Propõe-se uma leitura desse tipo de relação, apoiada no conceito winnicottiano de holding. / [en] The present work is based on the presuppositions of the psychology of culture that it seeks to apprehend the modalities which is built and it shows the person in a certain culture and, starting from this observation, it tries to understand the main aspects of the human reality (Augras, 1995). The main idea about the social imaginary - historical brazilian, appears the religion universe known as afro, having as the main character the pretos-velhos. A dialogue with authors of the social-sciences (Geertz, 1989; Berger, 1985; Bourdieu, 2004 et al.) it puts in evidence the hystoricals-social dynamics that leads their roles, among these, the characters of grandfathers and grandmothers, that the followers look for pieces of advice and protection. It intends a reading about this kind of relationship, based on the concept winnicottian of holding.

The present research, which treats about the development of Corporate Strategics, was done at Holding CVI, with home office in Santa Maria-RS city. The Holding CVI, that among others investments, works on beverage area, has as its main business, The Coca Cola Company franchise, in the region of Santa Cruz do Sul, Passo Fundo and Santa Maria, cities located in Rio Grande do Sul. This research is case a study, and has as its goal suggesting to the stockholder the development of Strategics Alliances - merging, purchases an associations that allow the grow of the Holding. To the conception of this Strategics Alliances it takes into consideration the followings points: the company historic, the environment analyze of beverage field and the stockholder profile. / A presente pesquisa, que trata sobre o desenvolvimento de Estratégias Corporativas, realizou-se na Holding CVI, com sede na cidade de Santa Maria-RS. A Holding CVI, que, entre outros investimentos, atua no segmento de bebidas, tem como seu principal negócio, a franquia da The Coca Cola Company, nas regiões das cidades de Santa Cruz do Sul, Passo Fundo e Santa Maria, situadas no Rio Grande do Sul. Esta pesquisa caracteriza-se com um estudo de caso, tendo como principal objetivo sugerir, para os acionistas, o desenvolvimento de Alianças Estratégicas - fusões, aquisições e associações que permitam o crescimento da Holding. Para a concepção dessas alianças estratégicas considerou-se os seguintes pontos: o histórico da empresa, a análise ambiental do setor de bebidas e o perfil dos acionistas.

[pt] Nesta dissertação procuramos investigar a incapacidade de brincar observada na clínica com crianças. Através da obra de Winnicott refletimos sobre o lugar do brincar para a psicanálise e sua relevância para o desenvolvimento emocional primitivo saudável. Em um paralelo com a obra de Wilfred Bion, apontamos a similaridade entre pensar e brincar enquanto capacidades pré-simbólicas, desenvolvidas nos primórdios da vida a partir da relação com o ambiente, principalmente pelas funções denominadas holding e rêverie. Ressaltamos a importância do lugar do analista diante das dificuldades na formação do espaço transicional, a partir de uma postura de analista suficientemente bom. / [en] In this dissertation we will discuss the children s inability to play observed in a clinic. Through Winnicott s work, we can reflect on the importance of playing for psychoanalysis and its relevance to healthy primitive emotional development. Parallel Wilfred Bion s work, we point out the similarities between thinking and playing as pre-symbolic capacities, developed from the relation with the environment in the beginnings of life, mainly by the functions denominated holding and rêverie. The importance of the analyst s place facing difficulties in the formation of the transitional space, from a sufficiently good analyst posture.

This study is concerned with the significance of the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 on the public utility holding companies which were operating in Texas in 1935.

Lichens are poikilohydric and cannot control water uptake and loss, water relations could therefore impact their distribution. This study examines if morphological, anatomical, and water storage traits could explain distribution of epiphytic species in the lichen genus Usnea. Seven species from oceanic (Norway) and continental areas (Sweden) were studied. Total, internal, and external water holding capacity (WHC, mg H2O cm-2) along with relative water content (WC) were recorded by spraying the thalli with water and measuring mass after shaking and blotting. The specific thallus mass (STM, mg cm-2 - main driver of WHC) was calculated from images of wet thalli. Thickness of anatomical layers (cortex, medulla, and axis) was also measured. Pendent species had lower STM and water storage than shrubby species, most probably an adaptation to water uptake from humid air. Total, internal, and external WHC were higher in the shrubby species than in the pendent ones. The pendent species had the same internal WHC as earlier reports on Bryoria and Alectoria. External water storage decreased for all species as biomass increased. The ratio between total and internal water was twice as high as reported in foliose lichens. Variation in branch diameter was much higher in shrubby than in pendent species. The interspecific differences in water storage reflect regional differences in water sources – oceanic species had higher water storage than pendent continental species, but lower than the shrubby U. hirta. I conclude that both internal and external water storage help to explain distribution of Usnea in Norway and Sweden.
