Svensk brevkultur på 1800-talet : Språklig och kommunikationsetnografisk analys av en familjebrevväxling / The culture of Swedish letter-writing in the 19th century : An analysis of a family correspondence from the perspective of linguistics and ethnography of communication

Persson, Kristina January 2005 (has links)
<p>In this dissertation, I examine the correspondence of an upper middle-class family from the early part of the nineteenth century. Rehabilitating Howard M. Parshley: A Socio-Historical Study of the English Translation of Beauvoir's Le deuxième sexe, with Latour and Bourdieu

Bogic, Anna D. 08 September 2010 (has links)
This study documents the problematic translator-publisher relationship in the case of the English translation of Simone de Beauvoir’s Le deuxième sexe. The socio-historical investigation of the case study demonstrates that the 1953 translation was complicated by several factors: the translator’s lack of philosophical knowledge, the editor’s demands to cut and simplify the text, the publisher’s intention to emphasize the book’s scientific cachet, and Beauvoir’s lack of cooperation. The investigation focuses on two aspects: the translator’s subservience and the involvement of multiple actors. Primarily concerned with the interaction between the translator and other actors, this study seeks answers that require investigation into historical documents and the work of other scholars critical of The Second Sex. In this enquiry, more than one hundred letters between the translator, H. M. Parshley, and the publisher, Knopf, are thoroughly analyzed. The study combines Bruno Latour’s and Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological concepts in order to provide a more detailed and encompassing examination within the context of Translation Studies. The letter correspondence is the primary evidence on which the study’s conclusions are based. / Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

Mikrotypografins inverkan på läsbarheten hos tryckt brödtext : En forskningsöversikt / How microtypography affects the legibility of running text in print : A research review

Skoglund, Gabriel January 2012 (has links)
How the typographic design of a document affects how easy it is to read is a subject that has long been of interest to researchers. The aim has been to reach a better understanding of the reading process, and to find an ideal way to design text for maximum legibility. However, the researchers have seemingly failed to raise awareness about their results in the typographic community. The aim of this thesis was to create an overview of the research into how microtypography – the typography concerned with individual letters and sentences – affects the legibility of running text. Ten empirical studies on this subject, published in scientific journals, were selected after literature searches. The methods and results of the studies were described and discussed. The studies were concerned with the following microtypographic factors: differences in legibility between typefaces, the role of x-height and letter spacing in, differences in legibility between lower case, upper case and italic letters as well as differences in legibility between specific letter shapes. The conclusion was that legibility research gives interesting insights into how typography can influence the reading process. However, the limited amount of studies found concerning each typographic factor, as well as the lack of studies concerning Swedish typography makes it hard to create typographic guidelines for Swedish typographers based on the research. It was also concluded that studies conducted in cooperation between researchers and typographers might be a way to raise awareness about the research and lead to greater practical application of research results.

Heidegger's theft of faith : a campaign to suspend radical theology

Weidler, Markus Mikula 05 May 2015 (has links)
In this inquiry I pursue two tasks. First, I locate the roots of Heidegger's philosophical project historically within a specific theological discourse bent on redefining the relation between religion and politics. Heidegger's main, if covert, intent was to combat the egalitarian, pluralistic impulses carried by a tradition of critical Christology, which leads from F.W.J. Schelling's (1775-1854) Philosophy of Revelation to the work of the radical theologian-philosopher Paul Tillich (1886-1965). These egalitarian impulses spring from a broadened understanding of religious community as a material communication community unified through the use of shared symbols into a community of understanding, knowledge, and interests. The theoretical expansion and deepening of such a communication model, I detect in the writings of the renegade Neogrammarian, Hermann Paul, here considered in light of the "neo-Idealist" initiative of one of Paul's most prominent critics, the Romanist Karl Vossler. Prior to the advanced theological exposition of symbolically mediated communication, in works such as Tillich's book Dynamics of Faith (2001; Engl. orig.1957), the Neogrammarian movement in language studies, I argue, holds the key to accessing the cloaked Christological subtext of Heidegger's thought. Second, after thus locating Heidegger's philosophical agenda within its intellectual-historical context, I expose how Heidegger manipulates philosophical rhetoric to achieve the suspension of Schelling's theological legacy. My analysis of Heidegger's rhetorical behavior is focused on his Letter on Humanism (written 1946, published 1949), a text very overt in both its philosophical biases and its politics. The Humanismusbrief comes the closest to revealing Heidegger's own self-positioning within his generation. The work's conclusion provides a brief look ahead, or Ausblick, to indicate the main features of how these findings about the Letter can be brought to bear on Heidegger's masterpiece fragment, Being and Time. Through this approach, Heidegger's inherently political philosophy gains a much clearer profile in the context of its formative phase in the waning days of the Weimar Republic and opens a new perspective on later attempts by its author to "re-apply" his philosophical program to the cultural situation of postwar Germany, as well as to the ethical-epistemological problems remaining after twelve years of German isolationism. / text

A Head Start to Learning: Exploration of a Parent-Directed Intervention to Promote Early Literacy Skill Development

Sundman-Wheat, Ashley Nicole 01 January 2012 (has links)
This study examined the effects of a parent-led intervention focused on developing children's early literacy skills within the home setting. The lesson plans contain scripted steps for completing activities to teach letter names and phonological awareness skills. Archival data were analyzed from a study conducted with 26 families from three Head Start centers. Thirteen families completed the intervention and thirteen families were enrolled in a control condition which provided information on shared reading strategies. Children in the intervention group performed at statistically significant higher levels on measures of letter naming, phonological awareness, vocabulary/oral language, and comprehension. Parents rated both the intervention and control conditions as highly acceptable. Most parents (n= 10) within the intervention group completed the vast majority of the lesson plans. Changes within the home revealed that parents in both groups engaged in the same types of early learning activities, but that parents in the intervention group reported engaging in these activities more frequently than the control group. This study contributes to the literature by creating a method of parental involvement in preschool targeting phonological awareness and letter naming abilities.

Mokinių rašinių sakinio sandara ir funkcijos / Sentence structure and function in schoolchildren‘s essays

Žukauskienė, Dainora 08 August 2013 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The Lithuanian language is not only prominent in its rich vocabulary but also there are quite a lot of possibilities to express ideas and thoughts using different sentence structures, such as: simple sentences (personal binomial and personal monomial, impersonal, modifications of personal sentences), complex sentences (coordinate, subordinate, parataxis and composite). The tenth form leaver should know all kinds of sentences, sentence structure and its function. He/she should be able to use all his/her theoretical knowledge in practice, it means he/she should be able to speak and write using functional, various sentence structures. The theme of the work – sentence structure and function in schoolchildren‘s essays. Considering essays themselves, a lot of attention is paid to the context, style and form of the essay. There was little research done of sentence syntax and function in schoolchildren’s essays. There was no research done what kind of sentence structure dominate in schoolchildren essays, what sentence structure is rarely used and what makes an influence which sentence structure and function to use. Moreover, it is not clear, if sentence structure becomes more complex according to the schoolchild’s age, comparing schoolchildren’s essays of the 9th–12th form. After examining 60 essays of senior schoolchildren (the 9th–12th form) some statements could be made. Firstly, schoolchildren are really capable of using sentences of various functional styles and different... [to full text]
