The Effects of Visual and Textual Annotations on Spanish Listening Comprehension, Vocabulary Acquisition and Cognitive Load

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effects of textual and visual annotations on Spanish listening comprehension and vocabulary acquisition in the context of an online multimedia listening activity. 95 students who were enrolled in different sections of first year Spanish classes at a community college and a large southwestern university were randomly assigned to one of four versions of an online multimedia listening activity that contained textual and visual annotations of several key words. Students then took a comprehension and vocabulary posttest and a survey to measure cognitive load and general attitudes towards the program. Results indicated that textual annotations had a significant positive effect on listening comprehension and that visual annotations had a significant positive effect on how successful students felt. No statistically significant differences were found for other variables. Participants also reported positive attitudes towards vocabulary annotations and expressed a desire to see more annotations during multimedia listening activities of this type. These findings provide further evidence of the impact that multimedia may have on language acquisition. These findings have implications for multimedia design and for future research. Language listening activities should include a variety of vocabulary annotations that may help students to understand what they hear and to help them learn new vocabulary. Further research is needed outside of the laboratory, in the online and increasingly-mobile language learning environment in order to align the research with the environment in which many students currently study. The incorporation of motivation into multimedia learning theory and cognitive load should be explored, as well as new measures of cognitive load. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Educational Technology 2010

Mendo, Marina January 2016 (has links)
The dissertation presents reflections on the process of creating Fabrica de Calcinha (Panty Factory), artistic research done by the author in order to explore the sonority as activating and guiding the composition of a scene. The creation process started from the sounds perceived in the center of Porto Alegre. We used the Dérive Sonore procedure as stimuli for this encounter, which was carried out by the author herself, a musician and a performer. We were, thus, able to build a database of sound objects (Schaeffer, 1966), perceptual objects decoded by the mind as a sound, recorded in the memory of bodies and technological devices and recovered at different stages of the creation process. The listening of the material affirmed itself as poetic work mediating the interactions that shaped the scenic material. For the organization of the different performing actions (physical, sound and vocals) created in improvisations, we primarily used a scenic music score model developed by the director and composer Heiner Goebbels.

Hearing Miles Davis: A Pedagogy of Autobiographical Performance and Jazz

McRae, Chris 01 May 2011 (has links)
This dissertation argues for a relational ethic of listening that emphasizes the pedagogical role of the listener as a student in dialogically hearing, producing, and responding to the other. This ethic of listening works to hear possibilities amongst differences, and to ethically account for and learn from the cultural, historical, and embodied differences of the other as they are produced relationally amongst macro-structures and micro-practices. In order to develop this ethic of listening, I pay specific attention to my solo autobiographical performance, Miles away from "The Cool," in which I present my autobiographical and musical reading of the autobiography of trumpet player Miles Davis, Miles. This performance and my research regarding the music, life story, and cultural significance of Davis functions as an example for my development of a listening centered approach to pedagogy. Listening to jazz and the music of Davis provides an approach to hearing possibilities as they are enabled and constrained by larger macro-structures and specific micro-practices. I argue this approach to listening can be extended to research regarding autobiography and geographic location. Listening to autobiography and location can enable a critical and ethical understanding of the ways history, context, and power play on bodies in jazz, autobiography, location and autobiographical performance. After explaining this relational ethic of listening in terms of autobiography and jazz, I make the case for listening as a performative act in which as listeners we are always students to the other. Performative listening is a critical communicative act that works to ethically and pedagogically hear and learn from the other. Performative listening emerges from a relational ethic of listening, and it is a productive pleasure that works to hear possibilities in and amongst differences.

January 2009 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research includes some of my concerns since graduation, and others resulting from the teaching experience about listening as a reading practice. These concerns led to the present work, which has, as study subject, the listening process of a literary text as a cultural practice of learning by orality. Its general objective is to experience this process, with children about seven and eight years old, from "E. M. 'Profª Diva Marques Gouvêa'", located in Rio Claro (SP). For this, I plotted as methodology a route with some features of the participant observation and action research, such as the constant observation, the record and the methodological listening posture issues, as well as the cultural history approach in terms of the everyday life study, the readers' community and the cultural practices of reading and listening. We focused in daily readings of the book The Pinocchio's Adventures, by Carlo Collodi (2002). I made the records of the students' speech on the reading of the day, in a Field Diary, with the aid of a photographic camera and camcorder. The theoretical route was based on the formulations of: the reading of world (FREIRE, 2003), the reading experience (Larrosa, 2002, 2005), the formation of the readers' community (CHARTIER, 1999), the importance of classics reading (Calvino, 2004; MACHADO, 2002), and the importance of conducting a proper education literature (Soares, 2003 and others). As final comments, I show some notes on the research objectives, which I consider as accomplished, regarding the description of activities with students and their achievements as readers. The recent researches about the literary reader's formation (CEALE) point to a methodological problem between the literary field and the reading teach in school. My research reinforced a suggestion, also of methodological nature, which may help other people to think what would... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Web of Sound : Hur ljud interagerar med ljud

Ståhl, Lukas, Ohlsson, Nicklas January 2018 (has links)
Our goal with this Bachelor Thesis was to explore and realize alternative ways of synthesizing sound, together with a rhizomatic and an audio-theoretical point of view. We both question our preconceived assumptions and the general perception of audio interaction. We have been inspired by Michel Chion's analysis process, modes of listening and the theory of synchresis to realize a starting point and a mainstay that runs throughout the thesis. Our theories and tests have taken place in both a reactionary and proactive manner as we have both produced prototypes based on preliminary studies and conducted tests with prototypes in search of external opinions. The tests were conducted by inviting third parties to participate in the survey and, in as natural a way as possible, conducted qualitative studies in the form of interviews and observation to jointly explore the semantic characteristics sound possesses. The result of our study is in conflict with the human biological conditions. To decontextualise audio completely is an issue that is considered an utopia and something that we have taken in consideration in the survey. At the end of the survey we will discuss if our situated mind and our references have influenced our scrutiny, our writing and our testing.

[en] THE ANALYTIC LISTENING: CORPORAL, AFFECTIVE AND SENSORY DIMENSION IN THE TRANSFERENCE / [pt] A ESCUTA ANALÍTICA: A DIMENSÃO CORPORAL, AFETIVA E SENSORIAL NA TRANSFERÊNCIA

SOLANGE MARIA SERRANO FUCHS 06 August 2018 (has links)
It includes the body that shows traces of a history that is kept alive and active. Intonation, rhythm, pauses, silence and looks may reveal more than speech. The analyst/patient meeting enables psychic printed impressions – from bodily sensations felt during a phase prior to word - to be revealed and implied. The analyst sensible listening to these multiple affective bodily expressions represents an important enlargement in the investigation field of the analytical experience. The reflection developed in this work stems from the bodily dimension that is fundamental in any analysis, but which has been emphasized mainly when treating patients who have difficulty expressing themselves orally.

Création sonore et cinéma contemporain : la pensée et la pratique du mixage / Sound design and contemporary cinema : the practical and thought process of mixing

Dallaire, Frédéric 18 April 2014 (has links)
This thesis describes and analyzes the esthetic, material and conceptual conditions that make the acoustic structures of contemporary cinema possible. The refinement of tools used for manipulating sound, the growing importance the sound designer and the emergence of a new space for sounds to coexist in (brought on by Dolby and multichannel sound systems) are factors that, over the past 30 years, have transformed the way we work with and listen to sound in film. These transformations reveal a new paradigm: mixing gradually imposed itself as the creative and perceptual act capable of accounting for our contemporary sensibility. This thesis explores the effects of the “thought process of mixing” (which functions by resonance, simultaneity, dosage and modulation) on the way we hear and understand the cinematographic experience. Working from the accounts of sound designers (Murch, Beaugrand, Thom Allard…), theoretical texts on film sound (Cardinal, Chion, Campam), documentaries on improvisational musicians (Lussier, Glennie, Frith), fiction films with a acute acoustic sensibility (Denis, Van Sant), philosophical texts on perception (Leibniz, James, Straus, Szendy…) and analyses of the cinematographic sound apparatus, this thesis renders audible the tensions, the recurrences, the structural connections and the problems, old and new, that forge and direct the theoretician, the artist and the auditor’s way of listening. By questioning the auditory dimension of perception, action, space and thought, this thesis aims to change the way we hear, create and think cinema.

Línguas ventantes : uma cartografia da expressão sonora / Winding meaning: a mapping of sound expression

Vargas, Felipe Nunes January 2011 (has links)
Trying to explore the semiotic potential that sound and music bring to mental health attention, this research intent to follow closely the sound experience on that clinical context. Taking the concept of “body” through Spinoza and Deleuze´s philosophy, we build a connection between aesthetic experience and human cognition, decomposing the process that makes sound affect and develop through the conscious body. As a method, a few sound experiences are fictionally presented as the “Imaginary Diary”, where some expressions between sound and sense are created to express the aesthetic complexity between sound and the cognitive body. Trying to reach the closest approach, the thinking and writing make a poetical effort to express the feelings and sensorial waves that sound experience evocates.
