Do not let bad maintenance ruin your day : A case study of coordinating turnaround maintenance in a continuous flow process industry.

Hlebnikovs, Andrew, Kövamees, Axel January 2022 (has links)
The uptime of machinery in continuous flow process industries such as steel manufacturing plants puts pressure on the maintenance function. This in turn contributes to sustaining reliable physical assets. As absence of reliable physical assets highly affects the competitive advantage. Turnaround maintenance is a common practice in such production setups and requires top-of-the-line managerial attention to be planned, executed and assessed in an efficient manner. By applying an abductive approach and combining the qualitative and quantitative research approaches, this thesis aims to explore the managerial issue of coordinating turnaround maintenance within a continuous flow process industry. The research questions that guide this thesis consist of describing how turnaround maintenance can be coordinated and its associated challenges. By comparing publicly available literature and empirical evidence provided by performing a case study, it is confirmed that the main challenges for conducting efficient turnaround maintenance comes down to the management in all stages associated with the turnaround. To coordinate turnaround maintenance activities in the most efficient manner, several challenges must be overcome. Aligning organisational goals and generating management commitment is the first prerequisite before any improvements can be done. It is necessary to define a common scope that strives for creating reliable physical assets to enhance the competitive advantage. The defined challenges in coordination are related to before, during and after the turnaround execution. These relate to creating a cyclical process for the turnaround where previously acquired knowledge is used for improving future turnarounds. While detailed planning is necessary for each turnaround, a high level of contingency is also necessary. To achieve this and succeed, it is argued that a high level of visibility during the turnarounds and the use of standardised methods is required.

On maintenance management of wind and nuclear power plants

Nilsson, Julia January 2009 (has links)
Electrical production in Sweden today is mainly from nuclear and hydro power. However, there is large increase in renewable energy like wind power and the installed new capacity goals are large. Several electrical production sources are important for the sustainability of the energy system. Maintenance is an approach for keeping a system sustainable. The importance of structured maintenance for reliable electrical production systems triggers the development of qualitative and quantitative maintenance management methods. Examples of these methods are Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) which is a structured qualitative approach that focuses on reliability when planning maintenance, and Reliability Centered Asset Management (RCAM) which is a development of RCM into a quantitative approach with the aim to relate preventive maintenance to total maintenance cost and system reliability. This thesis presents models, as applications of RCAM, based on the methods of Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and mathematical optimization, applied to wind and nuclear power plants. Both deterministic and stochastic approaches have been used and the proposed models are based on the Total Cost model, which summarizes costs for maintenance and production loss, and the Aircraft model, which is an opportunistic maintenance optimization model. Opportunistic maintenance is preventive maintenance performed at opportunities. The wind power applications in this study show on different ways to cover costs of condition monitoring systems (CMS) and further on economic benefits of these when uncertainties of times to failure are included in the model. The nuclear power applications show on that the optimization model is dependent on the discount rate and that a high discount rate gives more motivation for opportunistic replacements. When put into a stochastic framework and compared to other maintenance strategies it is shown that an extended opportunistic maintenance optimization model has a good overall performance, and that it, for high values of the constant cost of performing maintenance, is preferable to perform opportunistic maintenance. The proposed models, applied to wind and nuclear power plants, could be extended and adapted to fit other components and systems. / Reliability and cost centered maintenance methods

Changing Role of Maintenance in Business Organisations: Measurement Versus Strategic Orientation

Simões, Jorge M., Gomes, Carlos F., Yasin, Mahmoud M. 02 June 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the nature of performance measures utilised by the maintenance function in todays business organisations. In the process, the increasing variety and significance of these measures are addressed from operational and strategic perspectives. A survey-based research method was utilised to gather the research data. Several statistical procedures were utilised to analyse the data. The findings of this study point to the multifaceted nature of the maintenance measures and measurement. Multiple categories of maintenance measures were identified. These categories varied from the machine-specific, to measures impacting organisational performance. The relative lack of emphasis placed on the environment and strategic facets of maintenance is noted. The findings of this study have direct implications to organisations, which are attempting to measure the effectiveness of their maintenance efforts. The need to align the maintenance performance efforts with the organisational strategic direction is emphasised. In this context, the integration of the maintenance performance information systems with the overall organisational performance management information system might facilitate the needed alignment. This study utilises 120 maintenance measures. As such, it represents a comprehensive view of the maintenance effort.

A Fuzzy Criticality Assessment System of Process Equipment for Optimized Maintenance Management.

Qi, Hong Sheng, Alzaabi, R.N., Wood, Alastair S., Jani, M. 09 July 2013 (has links)
yes / In modern chemical plants, it is essential to establish an effective maintenance strategy which will deliver financially driven results at optimised conditions, that is, minimum cost and time, by means of a criticality review of equipment in maintenance. In this article, a fuzzy logic-based criticality assessment system (FCAS) for the management of a local company’s equipment maintenance is introduced. This fuzzy system is shown to improve the conventional crisp criticality assessment system (CCAS). Results from case studies show that not only can the fuzzy logic-based system do what the conventional crisp system does but also it can output more criticality classifications with an improved reliability and a greater number of different ratings that account for fuzziness and individual voice of the decision-makers.

A maintenance strategy for a network of automated fluid management systems / by Francois Oosthuizen.

Oosthuizen, Francois January 2012 (has links)
The current economic climate in South Africa requires organisations to optimise available resources – human and otherwise – to successfully sustain business operations. This is especially true for the growing SMME sector in South Africa. Organisations utilising hydrocarbon based products for input products into their respective process - specifically fuels and lubricants – face an even greater challenge in optimising resource usage as fuel and lubricant prices have increased substantially over the last decade. Automated and advanced technological solutions to properly and effectively manage these fuel and lubricant resources must be employed within organisations. This is critical as fuel and lubricants can constitute a large part of the annual expenditure within an organisation. Such organisations can include: • Mining operations • Transport operations • Agricultural operations • Maritime operations Newcom Fluid Management has developed a Fuel & Fluid Management Solution which consists of an electronic control system and various other elements to assist organisations in managing these fuel and lubricant resources. The Newcom FMS makes use of physical hardware on the client’s site as well as an internet based software system to control, monitor and report on all fuel and lubricant usages. There is also a large human resource element behind the system which continuously maintains these remote systems such that clients can enjoy the availability of fuels and lubricants when desired. The Newcom FMS must be properly maintained and resources optimised to allow Newcom to not only make a profit, but to stay competitive in the market place by providing clients with a sustainable and available solution. Therefore a properly researched maintenance management strategy must be developed for Newcom and the Newcom FMS solution to ensure that not only the client’s resources are optimised, but also Newcom’s resources in order to maintain the Newcom FMS. The aim of this research was to: • Research the theory behind maintenance management; • Identify and develop a sustainable maintenance strategy for the Newcom FMS solution taking into account the success factors as required by Newcom; • Test the experimental strategy and the current maintenance program at current Newcom clients and capture data on the two strategies employed; • Analyse and compare the experimental data to determine the effectiveness of the experimental maintenance strategy versus the corrective strategy; • Provide the experimental maintenance strategy “product” to Newcom along with the data obtained in the experiment as well as the recommendations on the way forward with the data obtained from the experiment serving as inputs. The parameters which were measured in the experiment were: • System availability; • Strategy expenditure and • Resources usage. The parameters were selected by Newcom as being the most pertinent to their current operational environment. Achieving success in these areas would effectively increase the probability of a successful maintenance management strategy for Newcom. • The experimental data was captured for the period the experiment was executed for. This data was analysed, the results were interpreted a / Thesis (MIng (Development and Management Engineering))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Contribuição à modelagem de um sistema de gerenciamento da manutenção de rodovias não pavimentadas em empreendimentos de exploração florestal / Contribution for modeling an unpaved roads maintenance management system within an entrepreneurship of forestry exploration

Pinto, Paulo Ricardo Rodrigues January 2009 (has links)
Everything that deserves to be maintained and preserved, deserves to be managed, and the maintenance management reaches its highest level when we deal with it as a system. The systematization of the maintenance management – although it is quite a recent approach as a subject of science that demands putting the strategic and operational levels closer – is considered essential in the search for certain competitive advantages like cost reduction, production pipeline reliability, and service providing. Since roads are viewed as assets worth preserving and managing, such managing has to be carried out in a systemic way. The roads here are the unpaved roads located into forestry exploration entrepreneurship for cellulose extraction. This research presents a conceptual proposal to model an unpaved road maintenance management system located into forestry exploration entrepreneurship for cellulose extraction. This research deals with road maintenance management systems, management and maintenance applied to roads as well as presents a particular point of view related to the evolution of the road maintenance management, and it also deals with the two approaches related to maintenance management, the network-level and the project-level approaches. This work also deals with unpaved roads, characterization and importance of such roads, an approach on the concept of serviceability applied to unpaved roads, mechanisms of deterioration, models to forecast performance, and alternatives of interventions addressed to maintain those roads. It also pinpoints benefits associated with the maintenance, ways to priorize interventions or roads, and some economic and financial analysis. It also works with the forestry exploration entrepreneurship for cellulose extraction, shows a broad vision of that entrepreneurship, approaches the forestry harvesting system, brings a brief discussion about the road maintenance under private entrepreneurships and discusses economic advantages of managing the maintenance of unpaved road network. All concepts previously discussed are the foundation of the proposed unpaved road maintenance management system. Among such concepts is the use of Relational Unified Process tool, a proposal addressed to carry on the unpaved road network management process, suggestions for maintenance polices and alternatives of maintenance interventions, and ways of collecting data related to the vehicle fleet and the condition of the road network. At the end, it presents some decision trees addressed to the selection of maintenance interventions, such trees take into account the length and the severity of the defects identified.
