Community music therapy as a resource for persons living with HIV/AIDS

This study explored community music therapy as a psychosocial resource for persons living with HIV/AIDS at a clinic in Tshwane, South Africa. The role of community music therapy and its implications in South Africa were addressed as a second aim. A review of the literature on HIV/AIDS suggested that Sub-Saharan Africa has the most reported cases of HIV/AIDS and that persons living with HIV/AIDS may experience a lack of psychosocial resources. These psychosocial resources included inter- and intrapersonal attributes, positive mood and feelings of well-being. The data emerged from transcription of audio and video excerpts of community music therapy sessions, which included live music making and informal interviews during sessions at an HIV/AIDS clinic. These excerpts were transcribed as thick descriptions, coded and categorized to answer the research questions. The four categories were discussed as themes and supported community music therapy as a psychosocial resource for persons living with HIV/AIDS. In the broader South African context, community music therapy is a viable, inexpensive and valuable approach to re-establish community and facilitate psychosocial resources for persons living with HIV/AIDS. / Mini Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / gm2014 / Music / Unrestricted

Music therapy: A bridge to communication for familial caregivers of persons with dementia

Caregivers of persons with dementia often struggle to sustain meaningful communication and reciprocal emotional connection due to the deterioration in functional memory and the resulting diminishment of social-interactive abilities in their loved one. The very personhood of the care recipient is also often compromised by the reduction in those socio-communicative capacities, which in turn, can impact the function of the caregiving relationship. Emotional, as well as social isolation can increase for the familial caregiver just as it often does for the care recipient. This thesis examines the impact that an individualized, home-based music therapy program had on the emotional connection and reciprocal interactions of four familial caregiving dyads. Data were collected over a month-long period using qualitative research methods including pre and post interview, a caregiver's journal log, researcher's journal log, participation, direct observation, and the observations of the caregiver respondents themselves as they engaged in the therapeutic process with their familial care recipient. Through a cross-case analysis of data collected, four main themes emerged to reflect the experiences of the participants. These were: 1) a longing for reciprocity, 2) the experience of emotional reciprocity, 3) the emergence of personhood through shared musical experiences, and 4) perseverance in the pursuit of meaningful communication. Sub-themes, and themes relating to the researcher's participatory experiences are also included. Implications for further research are discussed.

Psycho-educational guidelines for the use of music in a group anger management programme for children in residential care in Gauteng

This study explored the utilisation of a music anger management technique as an effective therapeutic aid in addressing the problems that children in residential care have in managing and expressing their anger. A literature review was conducted which provided evidence that music can be a helpful tool in teaching children appropriate ways to manage their anger. An empirical study was conducted and five participants were chosen through a sampling process. Background information of the five participants was obtained and data analyses were presented from the data gathered in the pre- and post-assessments processes before and after the implementation of the music anger management technique. The data that gave rise to several empirical findings were then reduced. From the empirical study, it can be concluded that the music anger management technique can be used effectively to improve inappropriate anger management. Getting firsthand experience of the implementation of the music anger management technique led me to derive psycho-educational guidelines, which can assist the educational psychologist in using the music anger management technique in addressing unmanaged anger in children in residential care. / Further Teacher Education / M.Ed. The topic of this thesis is ``Music therapy in Karlovy Vary Region{\crqq}. As the topic itself says, this work concentrates on music therapy as a valuable form of psychotherapy. A theoretical part of this thesis contains description of the history of music therapy and treatment by means of music. Apart from that, the theoretical part deals with an impact of music on people. It is also focused on positive and negative impact of music and sounds. The author describes various kinds and forms of music therapy. In the introductory part of this work the author concentrates on the area of music therapy and then he concerns with the common use of music therapy, including its division into particular target groups affected by music. The end of theoretical part concerns with methods and techniques in music therapy, where some of which were also used practically, as was finally proved by rersearch. The author oriented his research towards the use of music therapy in the Karlovy Vary Region, as it is claimed in the name of this thesis. The aim of this thesis is to find out whether the addressed instutitions of social services have encountered music therapy, and in what extent is music therapy carried out in the Karlovy Vary Region. In addition to research the author led music therapy meetings with seniors in České Budějovice, and Karlovy Vary. Techniques and experiences from this practice are described in the part of results and they are backed up with photo-documentation.

Ljudens och musikens påverkan på människan har alltid intresserat mig i egenskap av violinbyggarmästare men också som cellopedagog. Forskningen inom detta område är starkt begränsad och rör till största delen terapeutiska metoder och då främst musikterapi. Dock använder sig musikterapeuter inte av utifrån kommande frekvenser i sitt arbete och de alternativa terapeuterna har inte vetenskapliga belägg för frekvensernas verkan. Syftet med studien har varit att utföra en grundforskning om hälsoklanger som kan inspirera till vidare forskning om hur utifrån tillförda ljud och musik påverkar människan samt exemplifiera hur några musikterapeuter och tomatiskonsulter i Sverige och Tyskland erbjuder musik och ljud som behandlings- eller träningsform. Studien genomfördes genom en kombination av kvantitativa och kvalitativa metoder: med en enkätundersökning, intervjuer samt personlig kommunikation med musikterapeuter och alternativa terapeuter, en stressforskare och två tomatiskonsulter. Resultaten tyder på att ljud och musik både kan ha stimulerande och lugnande inverkan på människan, men att en tillförlitlig vetenskaplig värderingsmetod saknas för dem som erbjuder behandlingar. En fortsatt forskning blir att vidare undersöka hur utifrån tillförda ljud och musik påverkar människan. Förutsättningen för att kunna mäta detta är att de valda ljud- eller musikavsnitten inte förekommer enbart punktuellt utan under en längre sammanhängande tidsperiod samt att tillgång finns till därför passande medicinsk mätutrustning och en undersökningsgrupp vars storlek utgår från ett antagande om hur stora effekter man kan förvänta sig på en viss definierad utfallsvariabel (2.7 Musikens påverkan på kropp och själ). Studien kan i bästa fall även ge inspiration till fortsatt forskning kring förbättring av negativa bullriga ljudmiljöer. / The effects of sound and music have always been of great interest to me, both as a Luthier, as a Cellist and Strings teacher. Research in this area is very limited and mainly confined to methods of therapy, in particular Music Therapy. Music Therapists, however, do not employ the use of different sound frequencies in their therapy and the effects of frequencies in other forms of alternative therapy have not yet been scientifically researched or validated. The object of this study has been to research how external sounds and music affect people, and to examine the means by which this is used in therapeutic contexts, such as in Music Therapy and Tomatis training. This research was conducted using quantitative and qualitative methods, through surveys, interviews and personal communication with Music Therapists, Alternative Therapists, Stress Researchers and two Tomatis Consultants. The research suggests that sound and music can have a stimulating as well as a soothing influence on people, but that a thorough scientifically based investigation into how external sounds and music affect people is needed for professionals in this field of work. Continued research in this area would involve using chosen external sounds or excerpts of music that are not only short impulses but of a longer duration, access to relevant medical equipment to measure the effects of these sounds and an appropriately sized group of research subjects to correlate with the expected effects of a defined research variable. (2.7 Musikens påverkan på kropp och själ) It is hoped that this study will provide a foundation for further research into the effects of frequencies, sound and music, also with a view to finding means to improve negative, disturbing sound environments.

The theme of this diploma thesis, as the title suggests, is the use of music therapy in gerontological practice. More specifically the thesis is focused on the use of appropriate music therapy techniques with clients of the Seniors' Home Panorama in Tachov. The theoretical part characterizes the field of music therapy, its history and presentsituation in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, the reader is informed about the forms, methods and techniques of music therapy. Another part of the thesis briefly introduces the issue of old age. It deals with manifestations of old age, demographic issues or the senior care in the Czech Republic. The empirical part of the thesis is already devoted to the practical use of music therapy during work with the elderly. In the introduction, the objectives of the work are defined in relation to the target group of clients. By using the method of unstructured observation, it is determined whether the music therapy techniques fulfil predetermined goals. At the end of the work there is the evaluation of contribution of music therapy to this field.

Music and HIV/AIDS communities : perceptions, expectations, implications for music therapy

This dissertation is a qualitative interview study conducted with staff and residents at Sparrow Rainbow Village, an HIV/AIDS community. The purpose of this research was to explore the perception of the role of music held by members for their community, and specifically its role in creating a sense of community, as well as to investigate the implications these perceptions might have for setting up a community music therapy project. The interviews revealed a struggle with establishing a community identity that embraced health, as well as feeling isolated from the greater community.
