: магистерская диссертация / Socio-demographic processes in the Catherine parish of Yekaterinburg in the yearly 20th century

В., Vishnevskaya, A. V. January 2020 (has links)
The presented MA dissertation focuses on the social and demographic processes development in the late imperial Russian city. As an example, Yekaterinburg was chosen - a large, rapidly developing city in the Urals and one of its oldest Orthodox parishes. The study based on various sources, the main ones – the St. Ekaterina church parish registers (metricheskie knigi) dated from 1901 to 1919, which were transcribed into the database and analyzed using computer methods. The dissertation consists of three chapters, which sequentially deal with the history of the parish, marriage and fertility. The work carried out allows the deeper understanding of the social development and main demographic trends in the urban community at the beginning of the 20th century and to determine areas for further research. Focusing on a single Orthodox parish made it possible to reconstruct the details of the urban community’s life; to trace the population reaction towards the socio-political changes in the country and estimate the demographic transition development and modernization in the sphere of family and marriage in Yekaterinburg.

Leadership as service of a parish in mission

Prior, Laurence Paul 06 1900 (has links)
This study is concerned with the style of leadership needed to enable the church to fully express itself in mission. The renewed ecclesiology of the Second Vatican council, in which the church is said to be missionary by nature, is reviewed. The fundamental structure of the church is described theologically under the themes of the people of God, creation of the Holy Spirit and the body of Christ. A study of the Council's teaching on a pyramidal style ofleadership leads to the conclusion that it is inadequate for implementing the teaching on the missionary nature of the church. A review of post-Vatican II ecclesial movements worldwide points to a strong desire among many for a church of greater participation with a more personal leadership style. A study of leadership in the corporate world shows how a servant-style is replacing the traditional pyramidal structure. It is shown how this servant-leadership style could also be used in the church. The results of a qualitative research study of St. Joseph's Parish in Metro Manila, Philippines, are presented. This shows how the pastor gathered around him a group of lay leaders who share and express his style of servant-leadership. This part of the study begins by setting the historical context within which this parish exists by giving an overview of the history of the church in the Philippines and then shows how the leaders of St. Joseph's Parish motivated a passive congregation to become a church-in-mission. This occurred over a number of years through the parishioners being invited to full participation in parish life and becoming involved in service of those in need. An intense formation programme by parish leaders, who used a servant-leadership style, helped lead this parish from its former passivity to a manifestation of the missionary nature of the church. The study concludes by identifying some themes for further research. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.Th.(Missiology)

Late medieval roof bosses in the churches of Devon

Andrew, Susan January 2011 (has links)
The extensive survival of late medieval bosses in the roofs of many parish churches in Devon has long been recognised. These carvings escaped the widespread destruction of images during the Reformation through their relative inaccessibility, and yet most have never before been recorded; nor has systematic study been made of their design, their positioning within a sacred space, or the ways in which they may have been viewed and used by a largely illiterate audience. This thesis rectifies this oversight in its detailed documentation and photography of figural roof bosses and contextual information from 121 churches across the county, appended as a gazetteer, and in its thorough analysis, which considers the varied interactions between the people of the parish and their carvings. The thesis reviews the literature on roof bosses in Britain, particularly the work of C.J.P. Cave whose studies have hitherto dominated the field, before considering materiality and method, namely the properties of oak, the dating of the timber, the carvers and the carving process, and the surface finish and visibility of roof bosses. The social, religious, and decorative context is then discussed, especially the role of ecclesiastical authorities in the life of the parish church and its people, and the motivation of patrons, clergy and laity in the decoration of their parish church. An exploration of motifs carved on roof bosses follows, with these motifs linked to other images within the parish church, the cathedral and the wider world, to the words of the sermon and the confessional, and to scriptural texts and popular literature. Medieval understandings of vision are considered, as are the circumstances in which roof bosses may have been seen and used. The thesis argues, in particular, that many bosses may have served as mnemonic devices and aids to prayer in a penitential process which sought to cure the soul of sin. The thesis concludes with case studies of six parish churches from across Devon which confirm that these carvings should be recognised as a significant resource for our understanding of the late medieval parish church and its people in the Diocese of Exeter and beyond.

Vývoj obyvatelstva na panství Škvorec na přelomu 18. a 19. století / Population development at the manor of Škvorec at the turn of 18th and 19th century

Kuprová, Barbora January 2013 (has links)
Population development at the manor of Škvorec at the turn of 18th and 19th century Abstract The intention of this study is to analyze the development of natural change of population at the manor of Škvorec at the turn of 18th and 19th century (nuptiality and fertility in the years 1780-1819 and mortality in the years 1780-1869) and to characterize the basic demographic indicators. The nominal excerpts from parish registers was made to find numbers of births, marriages and deaths. Family reconstitution method (based on marriges from the years 1780-1819) was used for these data. The development of natural change at the manor is compared with the results of studies developed for the localities of the Czech lands and particularly with the development of the parish Lochenice and at Budyně nad Ohří. The conclusions mostly confirmed the development in the Czech lands. Comparison with results of Budyně nad Ohří confirmed the different population development in urban and rural areas. Keywords: development of natural change, parish registers, family reconstitution, manor of Škvorec.

Implementation of New Childcare Policies in New Orleans

Ives, Mary Katherine 15 May 2009 (has links)
The high number of working parents in the U.S. means that there are millions of child in need to care during working hours. Research shows that the quality of this care is of high importance in a child's development, both in the short-term and the long-term. States have used a variety of policy tools to regulate child care and to attempt to improve the quality of care. Louisiana has recently implemented a new policy called the Quality Rating System. Directors of centers in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, were interviewed to determine the impact of participation in QRS. Centers are struggling to meet the requirements and feel that changes need to be made for the program to have a better outcome.

This study intends to further contribute with the historical knowledge of a phenomenon widely accepted and practiced during the Ancient Regime. The exposure of children in the Parish Madre de Deus de Porto Alegre, between 1772 and 1837, is a subject that has not received much approach by the southern historiography. It is important to highlight that, during this period the Parish Madre de Deus did not have a Santa Casa de Misericórdia with an active foundling wheel to help this children, which, in this context, were left on the doorstep of this population, a common fact in other regions of Brazil as well. In the absence of the foundling wheel, the Portuguese legislation and the Imperial legislation that succeed it left the responsibility to care and raise those rejected children to the Municipal Chamber, which had to pay wet nurses and baby sitters or, as it happened in the case studied here, the Chamber would pay wages to the families willing to raise those children. In this sense, another issue that has been analyzed was the action of Porto Alegre's Municipal Chamber regarding those children throughout the proposed period, as caring for them was the Chamber's responsibility. After we rebuild this administrative setting of foundling children, we will analyze the demographical dimension of this phenomenon, verifying not only the profile and the conditions of the foundling itself, but also trying to detect and study the traits of the "receiving" households, as well as take notice of the (exposed) subject in that society. To achieve the objectives proposed here, we use a set of sources, explored by crossing the information contained in the Termos de Vereanças, produced by the Municipal Chamber, and in the parochial records (baptism, marriage and death), as well as crossing these with other ecclesiastic sources, such as confessants lists, wills and matrimonial habilitations. The main theoretical-methodological approaches adopted in this study are those from Historical Demography, which offers us adequate methods of analysis, as well as a historiographic foundation regarding this subject in Social History, Family History and History of Children.

Saule, Kevin 07 December 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines a little known part of the Catholic reformation. Thanks to the study of not less than 200 cases against deviant priests investigated by ecclesiastical courts in the diocese of Beauvais in the XVIIth century, our research tries to understand the part played by ecclesiastical courts (i.e. « officialités ») in the process of controlling parish priests. This dissertation is divided into three parts – « The Centuries of Disorders », « The Delinquent Priest in his Parish » and « The Delinquent Priest in Court » - and shows that, far from being marginalised, the Beauvais ecclesiastical court succeeds in keeping its prerogatives over priests without seeing its sphere of competence challenged by secular courts. Most of the time, the bishop’s judicial decisions work according to the same principles as the King’s, trying to reconcile and reform rather than to punish. The sentence of the judicial vicar (the « officialis ») is always severe and eventually only handed down when the priest showed he was unable to mend his ways in spite of numerous warnings. The deliquent priests who are at odds with the bishop’s justice have a distinctive profile. They come from the least underprivileged backgrounds, they were trained « on the job », they often come from a foreign diocese and all, or almost all, belong to generations living before the setting up of diocesan seminaries. Thanks to multitudinous and varied support from their parish, the morally depraved priests manage to remain in the place for many years before scandals cause them fall into disfavour. The religious life in the area is not greatly disturbed by the misbehaviour of the priest as the parish records and files as well as the mill resources show. Unlike the alarming speech of some plaintiffs, the flock doesn’t turn away from the Church after the scandals nor questions the validity of the sacraments administered by the priest.

L' ente "parrocchia" tra sussidiarietà e universalità

CARACCIO, ANDREA 03 March 2009 (has links)
Through the study of the rules I have specified the most important principles of the parish, territorial subdivision of the diocese recognized by the State. I have analysed the relation between the parish priest and the bishop, the relation between parish priest, who has the responsibility and the canonical authority over the parish, and the local community, the relation between the parish and the civil institutions to promote the social welfare.

The actions of institutional leadership at two Louisiana community colleges in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

Nevils, Henry Lane 17 February 2014 (has links)
In August and September of 2005, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast with damages estimated at $85 billion. Hurricane Katrina was so devastating that the number of lives lost and injuries sustained is still being calculated. Hurricane Rita, which made landfall in the southwestern part of the Louisiana just a few weeks after Katrina, did not cause as much damage as Katrina but was devastating nonetheless. In both cases, two Louisiana community colleges, Nunez Community College and SOWELA Technical Community College, were damaged to the point that many doubted that either college would have a future. Both community colleges, however, continued classes and are in operation today. This study examines the actions of the institutional leadership at Nunez Community College and SOWELA Technical Community College in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to conduct case studies on each college. A substantive theory emerged from the findings explaining the resiliency of both institutions. / text
