Financial advisory and portfolio management due to MiFID II : A storm approaching a clear financial sky?

Hallborg, Adam, Haidarova, Arya January 2017 (has links)
Background: Due to the global financial crisis that occurred in 2008, multiple deficiencies in existing financial market legislation were identified. The current EU legislation was in need of update and to be adapted to a more complex financial market. Therefore, the European Parliament and the Council adopted two new legal acts in 2014, MiFID II and MiFIR, to overcome current shortcomings and further develop the existing regulation in the current MiFID Directive. Aim: The purpose of this paper is to investigate and analyze the effects of the introduction of MiFID II for financial advisors as well as for asset managers in their ongoing operations. Completion: The study has been conducted with a legal-judicial approach in the theoretical part, whereas we in the analysis part we use law and economics. In the analysis the ethical impact of the changes in legislation is also discussed. “Directive 2014/65/EU of the European parliament and of the council of 15 May 2014 on markets in financial instruments and amending Directive 2002/92/EC and Directive 2011/61/EU” as well as the Swedish bill “2016/17:162: “Nya regler om marknader för finansiella instrument” has provided the basis for the study. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that the regulation of licensed securities companies will increase and become more extensive, and that there will be more requirements for documentation in investment context. These increased requirements will lead to a rise in costs, both for licensed companies and regulators, as more companies will need to be subject to a license requirement. From a competitive point of view, the changes tend to benefit large and/or capital-strong players, thereby distorting competition in the market. The prohibition of commission, on the other hand, should result in a re-allocation of capital from companies that previously received their incomes from high fees and incentive structures to instead be re-allocated to companies that deliver a good service and a good product.

A portfolio approach to capital project management

Linstrom, Leslie 09 June 2005 (has links)
The proposition of this dissertation is that superior capital budgeting solutions can be attained by not only analyzing projects individually but rather as part of a portfolio of projects that has the objective of maximizing the company’s range of multiple objectives, not only the economic benefit. The dissertation starts with a detailed study of current techniques and an assessment of flaws and shortcomings. This study concludes with the requirements that any new approach or model must address in order to improve on the current practices. Based on these requirements, a new model is developed based on the portfolio approach that integrates all the assumptions, constraints, project and variable interrelationships. An important feature of the model is that it selects its portfolio of capital projects in such a way that it optimizes support for the company’s multiple objectives, not only the economic objective. The dissertation concludes with the application of this model to a hypothetical case. It is concluded that, by developing and using this model, a company can improve the analysis required before capital budgets are finalized. / Dissertation (MEng (Industrial Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Industrial and Systems Engineering / unrestricted

La programmation DC et la méthode Cross-Entropy pour certaines classes de problèmes en finance, affectation et recherche d’informations : codes et simulations numériques / The DC programming and the cross- entropy method for some classes of problems in finance, assignment and search theory

Nguyen, Duc Manh 24 February 2012 (has links)
In this thesis we focus on developing deterministic and heuristic approaches for solving some classes of optimization problems in Finance, Assignment and Search Information. They are large-scale nonconvex optimization problems. Our approaches are based on DC programming & DCA and the Cross-Entropy method. Due to the techniques of formulation/reformulation, we have given the DC formulation of considered problems such that we can use DCA to obtain their solutions. Also, depending on the structure of feasible sets of considered problems, we have designed appropriate families of distributions such that the Cross-Entropy method could be applied efficiently. All these proposed methods have been implemented with MATLAB, C/C++ to confirm the practical aspects and enrich our research works.

Towards data-driven decision-making in product portfolio management:from company-level to product-level analysis

Hannila, H. (Hannu) 23 November 2019 (has links)
Abstract Products and services are critical for companies as they create the foundation for companies’ financial success. Twenty per cent of company products typically account for some eighty per cent of sales volume. Nevertheless, the product portfolio decisions — how to strategically renew company product offering — tend to involve emotions, pet products and who-shout-the-loudest mentality while facts, numbers, and quantitative analyses are missing. Profitability is currently measured and reported at a company level, and firms seem unable to measure product-level profitability in a constant way. Consequently, companies are unable to maintain and renew their product portfolio in a strategically or commercially balanced way. The main objective of this study is to provide a data-driven product portfolio management (PPM) concept, which recognises and visualises in real-time and based on facts which company products are concurrently strategic and profitable, and what is the share of them in the product portfolio. This dissertation is a qualitative study to understand the topical area by the means combining literature review, company interviews, observations, and company internal material, to take steps towards data-driven decision-making in PPM. This study indicates that company data assets need to be combined and governed company-widely to realise the full potential of company strategic assets — the DATA. Data must be governed separately from business IT technology and beyond it. Beyond data and technology, the data-driven company culture must be adopted first. The data-driven PPM concept connects key business processes, business IT systems and several concepts, such as productization, product lifecycle management and PPM. The managerial implications include, that the shared understanding of the company products is needed, and the commercial and technical product structures are created accordingly, as they form the backbone of the company business as the skeleton to gather all product-related business-critical information for product-level profitability analysis. Also, product classification for strategic, supportive and non-strategic is needed, since the strategic nature of the product can change during the entire product lifecycle, e.g. due to the technology obsolescence, disruptive innovations by competitors, or for any other reason.

[en] DATA-DRIVEN ROBUST OPTIMIZATION MODEL APPLIED FOR FIXED INCOME ALLOCATION / [pt] MODELO DE OTIMIZAÇÃO ROBUSTA ORIENTADO POR DADOS APLICADO NA ALOCAÇÃO DE RENDA FIXA

14 July 2020 (has links)
[en] This paper proposes a data-driven worst case robust optimization model applied in the selection of a portfolio of fixed income securities. The portfolio management implies in financial decision-making and risk management through the selection of optimal assets based on expected returns. As these are uncertain random variables, was included a defined set of estimated uncertainties directly in the optimization process, called scenarios. The Nelson and Siegel curve fitting model was used to construct the term structure of the interest rates employed in the pricing of securities, a risk-free asset and some risky assets of different maturities. The fixed-rate securities are marked to market because they are being traded before the maturity date. The implementation took place through computational simulation using market data and estimated data that fed the model. With robust optimization modeling were done different tests such as: analyze the sensitivity of the model to the variations of the parameters checking the results and the use of a rolling horizon scheme to simulate behavior over time. Once the optimal portfolio composition was obtained, the backtesting was done to evaluate the behavior of the allocations with the real return and also the comparison with the performance of a benchmark. The results of the tests showed the adequacy of the interest curve model and good allocation results of the robust portfolio, which presented reliability even in times of crisis.

Analysis of Copula Opinion Pooling with Applications to Quantitative Portfolio Management

Bredeby, Rickard January 2015 (has links)
In 2005 Attilio Meucci presented his article Beyond Black-Litterman: Views on Non-Normal Markets which introduces the copula opinion pooling approach using generic non-normal market assumptions. Copulas and opinion pooling are used to express views on the market which provides a posterior market distribution that smoothly blends an arbitrarily distributed market prior distribution with arbitrarily chosen views. This thesis explains how to use this method in practice and investigates its performance in different investment situations. The method is tested on three portfolios, each showing some different feature. The conclusions that can be drawn are e.g. that the method can be used in many different investment situations in many different ways, implementation and calculations can be made within a few seconds for a large data set and the method could be useful for portfolio managers using mathematical methods. The presented examples together with the method generate reasonable results.

Business intelligence v generickém farmaceutickém průmyslu pro výběr portfolia a registrační strategii / Business intelligence in the generic pharmaceutical industry for portfolio selection and registration strategy

Rösslerová, Petra January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis is to describe and analyse information sources, which are useful for the molecules portfolio selection suitable for the future development of a generic drug. These information sources should be examined on the case study of the portfolio selection in a given therapeutic area. The topic of the diploma thesis is presented in the context of basic principles and functions of the generic farmaceutical industry and its information needs. The introductory chapter characterizes the farmaceutical industry in general and warn on a competitive environment, which the farmaceutical companies can succeed in thanks to the advanced methods of the business intelligence. The second chapter focuses on the differences betwen the generic and original pharmaceutical industry, a drug lifecycle is also introduced there. The next chapter specifies the methods of the business intelligence in the generic pharmaceutical industry on the ground of its information needs. The fourth chapter plays a key role. First of all, it introduces general characteristics of information sources used in the strategic portfolio management. Secondly, the detailed description and analysis of eight main information sources used by the generic companies within business intelligence follows. In the last chapter these...

Two essays on nonprofit finance

Qu, Heng 06 May 2016 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation consists of two essays on nonprofit finance. Nonprofit finance concerns obtaining and managing financial resources to support the social purposes of nonprofit organizations. A unique feature of nonprofit finance is that nonprofits derive revenue from a variety of sources. Nonprofit finance thus involves answering two fundamental questions: What is the optimal combination of revenue sources that supports a nonprofit to achieve its mission? Where and how to obtain the revenue sources? The two dissertation essays address these two questions respectively. The first essay, titled “Modern Portfolio Theory and the Optimization of Nonprofit Revenue Mix,” is among the first to properly apply modern portfolio theory (MPT) from corporate finance to nonprofit finance. By analyzing nonprofit tax return data, I estimate the expected return and risk characteristics for five nonprofit revenue sources as well as the correlations among these returns. I use the estimates to identify the efficient frontiers for nonprofits in different industries, based on which nonprofit managers can select an optimal portfolio that can minimize the risk given a preferred level of service provision or maximize the return given a level of risk. The findings also pose a challenge to the predominant approach used in previous nonprofit finance studies (Herfindahl-Hirschman Index) and suggest that MPT is theoretically and practically more helpful in guiding nonprofit revenue management. The second essay, titled “Charitable Giving in Nonprofit Service Associations: Identities, Incentives, and Gender Differences,” concerns nonprofit resource attainment, specifically, how do decisionmaking contexts and framing affect donations. Membership in a service club is characterized by two essential elements: members’ shared interest in the club’s charitable mission; and private benefits that often come as a result of social interactions with other members, such as networking, fellowship, and fun. A laboratory experiment was designed to examine 1) whether membership in a service club makes a person more generous and 2) the effect of service club membership—stressing either the service or socializing aspects—on individual support for collective goods. The study finds that female individuals are the least generous when they are reminded of the socializing aspect of service-club membership.
