New quasi-TEM waveguides using artificial surfaces and their application to antennas and circuits

Research interest: In recent years we have seen the emergence of commercial applications at high frequencies, such as the top part of the microwave band and the millimeter and sub-millimeter bands, and it is expected a big increase in the coming years. This growing demand requires a rapid development of low-cost technology with good performance at these frequencies, where common technologies, such as microstrip and standard waveguides, have some shortcomings. In particular, existing solutions for high-gain planar scanning antennas at these frequencies su er from the disadvantages of these technologies giving rise to high-cost products not suitable for high volume production. Objectives: The main objective of this thesis is to study the feasibility of a new proposal to improve existing solutions to date for low-cost high-gain planar scanning antennas at high frequencies. This overall objective has resulted in another central objective of this thesis, which is the research of new quasi-TEM waveguides that are more appropriate than current technologies for the realization of circuits and components at these frequency bands. These guided solutions make use of periodic or arti cial surfaces in order to con- ne and channel the elds within these waveguides. Methodology: The work follows a logical sequence of speci c tasks aimed at achieving the main objective of this thesis. Chapter 2 presents the proposed guiding solution and shows its performance numerical and experimentally. The optimized design of high-gain antennas based on waveguide slot arrays requires the development of e cient ad-hoc codes. The implementation and validation of this code is presented in Chapter 3, where a new method for the analysis of corrugated surfaces is proposed, and in Chapter 4, which extends this code to the analysis of waveguide slot arrays. The process design and optimization of a two-dimensional array is described in Chapter 5, where a preliminary experimental validation is also described. Moreover, the proposed guiding solution has inspired the development of a new guiding technology of wider bandwidth and more versatile for the realization of circuits and components at high frequencies. Zastřešení planetária / The roof structure of the planetarium.

The aim of the final thesis was to design and assess timber loadbearing structure of planetarium located in Brno and height of the construction 10 m. Designed building of planetarium consists of dome and hall, which operate separately. The structure is designed from glue laminated timber, solid timber and steel bracing, ridge ring and connecting elements. Building foundations is solved by reinforced anchor blocks fixed to foundation pads, which are connected by foundation strips. Loadbearing structure of the dome consists of arched beams together with purlins and ridge ring. Stability is ensured by 4 fields of cross bracing located between purlins. Loadbearing structure of the hall consists of roof and wall beams connected by frame corners together with roof and wall purlins. In gable walls is structure complemented by columns. Stability is ensured by diagonal and vertical elements situated between wall purlins, which together form a truss system.

Statistical and Machine Learning for assessment of Traumatic Brain Injury Severity and Patient Outcomes

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death in all age groups, causing society to be concerned. However, TBI diagnostics and patient outcomes prediction are still lacking in medical science. In this thesis, I used a subset of TBIcare data from Turku University Hospital in Finland to classify the severity, patient outcomes, and CT (computerized tomography) as positive/negative. The dataset was derived from the comprehensive metabolic profiling of serum samples from TBI patients. The study included 96 TBI patients who were diagnosed as 7 severe (sTBI=7), 10 moderate (moTBI=10), and 79 mild (mTBI=79). Among them, there were 85 good recoveries (Good_Recovery=85) and 11 bad recoveries (Bad_Recovery=11), as well as 49 CT positive (CT. Positive=49) and 47 CT negative (CT. Negative=47). There was a total of 455 metabolites (features), excluding three response variables. Feature selection techniques were applied to retain the most important features while discarding the rest. Subsequently, four classifications were used for classification: Ridge regression, Lasso regression, Neural network, and Deep learning. Ridge regression yielded the best results for binary classifications such as patient outcomes and CT positive/negative. The accuracy of CT positive/negative was 74% (AUC of 0.74), while the accuracy of patient outcomes was 91% (AUC of 0.91). For severity classification (multi-class classification), neural networks performed well, with a total accuracy of 90%. Despite the limited number of data points, the overall result was satisfactory.

This master's thesis is dealing with an opposite approach, where the fingerprints are not being recognized, but are generated on the minutiae position basis. Such algorithm is then free of the minutiae detection from image and enhancements of fingerprints. Results of this work are the synthetic images generated according to few given parameters, especially minutiae.

Accelerating bulk material property prediction using machine learning potentials for molecular dynamics : predicting physical properties of bulk Aluminium and Silicon / Acceleration av materialegenskapers prediktion med hjälp av maskininlärda potentialer för molekylärdynamik

In this project machine learning (ML) interatomic potentials are trained and used in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to predict the physical properties of total energy, mean squared displacement (MSD) and specific heat capacity for systems of bulk Aluminium and Silicon. The interatomic potentials investigated are potentials trained using the ML models kernel ridge regression (KRR) and moment tensor potentials (MTPs). The simulations using these ML potentials are then compared with results obtained from ab-initio simulations using the gold standard method of density functional theory (DFT), as implemented in the Vienna ab-intio simulation package (VASP). The results show that the MTP simulations reach comparable accuracy compared to the DFT simulations for the properties total energy and MSD for Aluminium, with errors in the orders of magnitudes of meV and 10-5 Å2. Specific heat capacity is not reasonably replicated for Aluminium. The MTP simulations do not reasonably replicate the studied properties for the system of Silicon. The KRR models are implemented in the most direct way, and do not yield reasonably low errors even when trained on all available 10000 time steps of DFT training data. On the other hand, the MTPs require only to be trained on approximately 100 time steps to replicate the physical properties of Aluminium with accuracy comparable to DFT. After being trained on 100 time steps, the trained MTPs achieve mean absolute errors in the orders of magnitudes for the energy per atom and force magnitude predictions of 10-3 and 10-1 respectively for Aluminium, and 10-3 and 10-2 respectively for Silicon. At the same time, the MTP simulations require less core hours to simulate the same amount of time steps as the DFT simulations. In conclusion, MTPs could very likely play a role in accelerating both materials simulations themselves and subsequently the emergence of the data-driven materials design and informatics paradigm.

Crossing the Americas: Empire, Race, and Translation in the Long Nineteenth Century

This dissertation examines interactions and circuits of exchange between Anglophone and Hispanophone literary cultures in the wake of the Mexican-American War, particularly those involving African-American, Indigenous, Latin American, and proto Latina/o-American communities. My dissertation grapples with the breadth of multilingual Americas, examining the stakes of U.S. territorial expansion and empire through a range of translations, adaptations, and literary borrowings that enabled the transit and transmutation of texts in the mid-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. I focus on works by a range of writers, poets, activists, politicians, and translators, including Carlos Morla Vicuña, John Rollin Ridge, Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés, José Martí, Helen Hunt Jackson, Martin Delany, and Willa Cather. I draw upon letters, periodicals, novels, and poems that circulated in the Americas, arguing that choices and practices of translation were in dialogue with shifting frameworks of race and ethnicity in these different contexts. My analysis of these textual forms depicts some of the distinct ways that authors employed translation as a mode of political activism. Ultimately, this dissertation examines the relation between translation and national belonging in these different contexts, unveiling the varied forms by which transgressive translation strategies were harnessed as forms of anti-imperialist work even as they often initiated or replicated neocolonial and imperialist practices.

Kombinerad bekämpning som metod för verkan : Lätt infanteritaktik under brittiska markoperationerna i Falklandskriget

Denna undersökning har studerat ett lätt infanteriförbands användning av kombinerad bekämpning som metod för verkan under en amfibieoperation samt vilka aspekter som påverkade möjligheten till kombinerad bekämpning p.g.a. operationens amfibiska karaktär. Fallet har utgjorts av Parachute Regiments två bataljoner som under Falklandskriget utkämpade tre slag vid Darwin – Goose Green, Mount Longdon och Wireless Ridge. Som analysverktyg har använts Robert Leonhards teori om den kombinerade bekämpningens tre principer. Indikatorer på principerna har varit syften med verkan hämtade ur teorin om de grundläggande förmågorna. Två av slagen befanns endast delvis kännetecknas av Leonhards två första principer, principerna om kompletterande system och dilemman. Den tredje principen om fördelaktig terräng uppfylldes inte. Det tredje slaget regementet utkämpade kännetecknades helt igenom av Leonhards två första principer medan den tredje delvis beaktades. Undersökningen konstaterar att kombinerad bekämpning som metod för verkan kan utvecklas av ett lätt infanteriförband under en amfibieoperation. Dock ledde ofördelaktig disponering av förbandet i de aktuella fallen till att kombinerad bekämpning tidvis omöjliggjordes. Leonhards tredje princip tenderade att förringas. De specifikt amfibiska aspekterna avseende möjligheten till kombinerad bekämpning utgjordes främst av tillgången till fartygsartilleri, kraven på helikoptertransporterbart fältartilleri samt bristen på lätta trossfordon. / This dissertation has investigated how a light infantry force has used combined arms during an amphibious operation, specific factors related to the operations character affecting the possibility to develop combined arms have also been highlighted. The case chosen for the study was Parachute Regiments actions during the three battles of Darwin – Goose Green, Mount Longdon and Wireless Ridge during the Falklands War. As a analytical tool Robert Leonhard’s theory about the three principles of combined arms was used together with indicators borrowed from the theory about the warfighting functions purposes of fires. Two of the battles were found to be only partially characterized by Leonhard’s first two principles, complementary systems and dilemmas. The third principle about favorable terrain was neglected. The third battle was throughout characterized by the first two principles and to a larger extent than the former by the third principle. The dissertation concludes that light infantry can use combined arms during amphibious operations. The battles studied were, however, often characterized by unfavorable disposition of the force which affected the possibilities to use combined arms. Leonhard´s third principle was usually neglected. The most important amphibious aspects affecting the possibilities to combined arms were found to be naval gunfire support, light field artillery and the scarcity of light all-terrain vehicles.

Late Quaternary Plant Zonation and Climate in Southeastern Utah

Plant macrofossils from packrat middens in two southeastern Utah caves outline development of modern plant zonation from the late Wisconsin. Allen Canyon Cave (2195 m) and Fishmouth Cave (1585 m) are located along a continuous gradient of outcropping Navajo Sandstone that extends from the Abajo Mountains south to the San Juan River. By holding the site constant, changes in the floral composition for a plot of less than one hectare can be observed, even if sporadically, over tens of millennia. At Allen Canyon Cave, engelmann spruce-alpine fir forest was replaced by the present vegetation consisting of pinyon-juniper woodland on exposed ridgetops and cliffside stands of Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and aspen. Xerophytic woodland plants such as pinyon, Plains prickly pear, and narrowleaf yucca arrived sometime in the middle Holocene between 7200 and 3400 B.P. At Fishmouth Cave, Utah juniper in Holocene middens replaced blue spruce, limber pine, Douglas fir, and dwarf and Rocky Mountain junipers in late Wisconsin samples. Disharmonious associations for the late Wisconsin occur only at the lower site with the xerophytes Mormon tea, Plains prickly pear, and narrowleaf yucca growing alongside subalpine conifers. One possible explanation involves the late Wisconsin absence of ponderosa and pinyon pines from the Colorado Plateaus. Released from competition at their lower limits, subalpine conifers were able to expand into lower elevations and mix with xerophytic plants found today in understories of pinyon-juniper and ponderosa pine woodlands. Quantitative climatic estimates are derived for the late Wisconsin by applying vertical lapse rates for temperature and precipitation to the amount of vegetation depression. The Fishmouth Cave sequence indicates a minimum lowering of 850 m for blue spruce, limber pine, and dwarf juniper. A depression of at least 700 m for engelmann spruce and alpine fir is suggested for the Allen Canyon locality. Use of conservatively low lapse rates for stations below 2080 m yields a 3-4°C cooling from present mean annual temperature and 35 to 60 percent more rainfall than today. Steeper lapse rates associated with more mountainous terrain suggest a 5°C lowering in temperature and up to 120 percent increase over modern precipitation.
