Écriture et identité aristocratique dans l’oeuvre de Barbey d’Aurevilly / Writing and aristocratic identity in Barbey d’Aurevilly’s work

Sorel, Elise 25 November 2016 (has links)
Our thesis intends to explore, through an extensive study, Barbey d’Aurevilly’s problematic and paradoxical ways of relationship to aristocracy, setting the hypothesis that this identity conscience lies at the basis of his conception and his experience of writing. After having grasped the idea that the author has developed about aristocratic identity, following evolutive dynamics, and having precisely described what constitutes for him the features of the ideal aristocrat, we mean to question more particularly the way he tries to assert this identity in his style of life and writings. How is it possible to conciliate this identity with one’s status of writer ? Attached to an aristocratic posture, dating back to the Ancient Regime, which privileges the amateurism tradition and aesthetics of negligence, Barbey d’Aurevilly legitimates nevertheless his writing art, paradoxically, by the display of aristocratic ethé, different according to the various genres involved. These ethé justify his discourses ; meanwhile their fundamentally ambivalent nature sets the writer free of his personal contradictions and enables him to invoke these prestigious models. Finally, we explore more largely the way such an aristocratic posture influences his conception of writing and literature, through a poetical and stylistic study.

As muitas faces de uma pedra: o universo lexical da obra em prosa de Ariano Suassuna / The many sides of a stone: the lexical universe of the prose works by Ariano Suassuna

Solange Peixe Pinheiro de Carvalho 30 November 2011 (has links)
Stylistics studies, included in the field of research related to the Portuguese language, aim at verifying how the choice of lexicon and literary neologisms can affect readers of literature. Among other authors, Alves (1990), Barbosa (1981), Lapa (1977), Mattoso Câmara Jr. (1985), and Martins (2000) studied this subject, highlighting the importance of lexical creation in connection with the expressiveness and creativity of many Brazilian writers. Bearing in mind the relevance of research in this field, we have chosen as corpus for our study the only prose works by playwright Ariano Suassuna, Romance d\'A Pedra do Reino and História d\'O Rei Degolado, characterised by the significant amount of lexical creation, which not only conveys to the reader the worldview of their narrator, Dom Pedro Dinis Ferreira-Quaderna, but also confer the text great originality, tending either to the subversion or validation of the literary genres which inspired Suassuna to create his works, especially chivalric romance and cordel literature. We have also verified how, through careful lexical manipulation strategies, Quaderna attempts to entice his readers by showing a single worldview, and trying to impose Brazilian cultural values that he deems to be important. From the identification and collection of neologisms created by Suassuna, the main objective of this study is to present a sample of syntagmatic and semantic neologisms found in both works, taking into consideration aspects such as the affectivity of words and the expressiveness of suffixes; thus highlighting how effectively Suassuna creates and uses classical and popular elements the basis of his cultural thinking.

The first cries compounds possessed simple harmonies, making the soloists of the time to interpret differently from today. The different treatments harmonics, which have arisen over time, seem to have been one of the leaders of these different interpretations, which have been shown in an intense and characteristic improvisation. Apparently, there was an increase in these transformations of choro with the rapid development of technology and media from the mid-twentieth century. This circumstance, perhaps, brought a more intense and immediate contact of this musical genre with global genres such as jazz, for example, as a new and intense focus on improvisation, which has drawn attention to formal structures and performing hybrid performances. The intensification of cultivation of Jazz in the country and later the emergence of Bossa Nova in the mid-twentieth century, it seems, interfered markedly in the improvisation of gender, providing new composers to invest in new procedures related to this harmonic American genre. Given this circumstance, this study aimed to investigate the technical and cultural implications resulting from the interference of different harmonics in procedures related to the processes of improvisation and musical genre choro in this context not only seek melodic and harmonic innovations, but also processes of identity implicated in processes of cultural hybridization.

Isabel de Andrade Moliterno 21 February 2008 (has links)
This research of the style of the Brazilian poet Alberto da Cunha Melo is based on the stylistic methodology and aims at contributing with the studies of this author, as well as giving descriptive information about some expressive uses of the Portuguese language. Firstly, I discuss some theoretical and methodological questions related to my kind of reading, such as image, text, style, form and sense. Secondly, I offer a panoramical approach of the author\'s style, focusing some stylistic recourses in texts selected to represent the whole poetry, which was developed throughout more than four decades. Although, in this second moment, I intend to present an overview of Alberto da Cunha Melo\'s work, the stylistic reading (on account of its interest in observing how form and content are associated) always tend to focus the details. Thirdly, I analyse more accurately four poems, each one from a different phase of production. His poetry can be divided in four different periods, concerning the techniques applied to the form. In a final chapter, I register the main stylistic characteristics of this writer. Even though I consider different aspects of the use of language, regarding how the meaning effects are obtained, I devote special attention to a technique taken as one of the most significant of his style: the reverberation of image, produced by the repetition of sounds, words, syntactic structures or ideas, creating the effect of concision and emphasis.

Att ställa till en scen : Verbala konflikter i svensk dramadialog 1725–2000 / Making a scene : Verbal conflicts in Swedish drama dialogue 1725–2000

Sörlin, Marie January 2008 (has links)
<p>This thesis deals with interactional patterns in verbal disputes as portrayed in the written dialogue of Swedish drama over three centuries. The overarching aim is to contribute to research into conflict talk in Swedish dialogue, but also to contribute to historical pragmatics and linguistic stylistics.</p><p>The teoretical and methodological framework combines elements from conversation analysis and theories of communicative events (activity types). A corpus of 30 drama texts, written during the 18th century, the late 19th century, and the late 20th century, was examined for examples of conflict events that are lexically marked as such in the texts (by words such as <i>argument</i>, <i>dispute</i>, <i>quarrel</i> etc.). </p><p>A total of 47 conflict events were identified in 21 of the 30 drama texts. The construction of the beginning of the three most significant types of conflict sequences found within 45 of the 47 events, totalling 111 sequences, is analysed in detail. The three sequence types concern differences in opinion (disagreement sequences), accusations (complaint sequences) and directives (rejection sequences).</p><p>One result of the study is that complaint sequences are shown to be by far the most common conflict pattern in the data. Another result is that few differences are found regarding the construction of the sequences over three centuries. For the most part, it is the same sort of moves that are frequent no matter which period the data stem from. One conclusion is therefore that the conflict patterns in drama dialogue appear to be relatively stable over time.</p><p>The study also deals with the dramatic functions of the conflict patterns (the events, sequence types or moves). Two functions are discussed, namely plot development and characterisation. While all conflict can further the process of characterisation, for example by showing the negotiation of differences in power between the characters, less than half of the events further the plot by having an effect on the disputants or other characters in the drama.</p>

Winning, Losing, and Changing the Rules: The Rhetoric of Poetry Contests and Competition

Pietrzykowski, Marc 07 August 2007 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to trace the shifting relationship between the fields of Rhetoric and Poetry in Western culture by focusing on poetry contests and competitions during several different historical eras. In order to examine how the distinction between the two fields is contingent on a variety of local factors, this study makes use of research in contemporary cognitive neuroscience, particularly work in categorization and cognitive linguistics, to emphasize the provisional nature of conceptual thought; that is, on the type of mental activity that gives rise to conceptualizations such as “Rhetoric” and “Poetry.” The final portions of the research attempt to use some modeling techniques derived from cognitive linguistics as invention strategies for producing stylistically idiosyncratic academic knowledge, and for examining the relationship between the stylistic markers we associate with each of the two aforementioned fields.

Stilstudier i Carl Jonas Love Almqvists exilförfattarskap

Mårtenson, Per January 2005 (has links)
This dissertation is a study on the works of the Swedish author Carl Jonas Love Almqvist during the final years of his exile in America. Focusing on the monumental 1438-page unpublished manuscript 'About Swedish Rhymes', the study first presents the textual material and then discusses the text from different formal and content-based aspects essential to an understanding of Almqvist's works in exile. In the manuscripts preserved from his last years of exile, i.e. the period after 1860, Almqvist refers to 'Mr Hugo's Academy, established in the year 1838' introduced in one of the volumes of The Book of the Wild Rose (1839). In comparison with his earlier fiction about academic "cabinet meetings", this fiction of such an academy, conceived in exile, is in some ways extraordinary. A close reading of the texts reveals that the aging Almqvist, contrary to previous opinions about him, maintained strict control over the activity: the extension and division of the record, as well as its references to time and space, all indicate a complete consistency and an exact mimetic order. The consideration of 'About Swedish Rhymes' starts out from exterior qualities. The observations are first considered in relation to the author's statements on the importance of the manuscript for the literary work of art. Subsequently, the genesis of the "exile" texts is re-examined. One key question here is whether the manuscript was completed in Philadelphia, or was continued in Bremen during the final year of his life. The content of the conversations in the records of the cabinet meetings is also analyzed. Although questions of metre and versification dominate, the text also deals with a variety of widely differing subjects, including discussions about the use of language and linguistic norms. The fictitious frame that the cabinet meeting provides for the purpose of discussing metre and rhyme is also considered. Here we find various improvised verses composed at the cabinet meeting and put into the mouth of the authentic versifier H.J. Seseman. One important question is whether the cabinet-meeting discussions about the metre in these verses are intended to be a serious contribution to scholarly debate, or whether they in fact have ironic undertones. Next, the narration of the "exile" texts is discussed from the point of view provided by its own fictitious perspective, together with the author’s relation to irony, satire and parody. The concluding chapter deals with verse-making in the record of rhyming. The emphasis is laid on the analysis and characterization of the various rhymed verses collected under the title Sesemana. One essential question concerns the 'rubbishy' or 'plain' character of these poems. The present analysis indicates that questions of rubbish, textual triviality and the like must bow to the broader question of the character of the poems in a deeper sense. Seseman's poetry is considered in relation to the Songes collection. Finally the question of how rhythm manifests itself as 'free verse' in a number of these poems with more serious content is also discussed.

"Bra Jobbat..." : A case study built around the stylistics that exists on the Facebook pages of Gina Tricot and Acne Studios

Olsen, Erik, Wartmark, Petra January 2014 (has links)
This study aims to analyze the stylistic expressions that exist on the Facebook pages of Gina Tricot and Acne Studios. The study is based on theories of eWOM, marketing management and consumer communities to create an understanding on how, and why, consumers and brands choose to express themselves in a particular way on Facebook. The study has been operationalized through a netnographic data collection of the brands’ Facebook pages during a period of three months, and which have been analyzed through a stylistic textual analysis. The main aspects of the analysis have been function, incentive, purpose, disposition and the characteristics of the textual style. The study has focused on posts made by both consumers and the brands themselves.Through this method the study concluded that there are significant differences in how the two brands choose to use their Facebook pages. A brand like Acne Studios uses their Facebook page as a medium for sharing new garments and collections, while Gina Tricot uses their Facebook page to create interaction with consumers, and to receive feedback on what the consumers consider to beautiful or hideous. These differences could originate from the positioning that the brands have chosen on the fashion market, and the study reconnects with the theories regarding fashion market positioning to explain why there is not one singular correct way to use a Facebook page. The study also addresses and compares the stylistic expressions of both the consumers and the brands, to see if there are any connections between the stylistics of the two.
