Walt Whitman e a formação da poesia norte-americana (1855-1867) / Walt Whitman and the making of North American Literature (1855-1867)

Bruno Gambarotto 28 April 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze some of the decisive moments in the making of North American poetry, determined by the development, from 1855 to 1867, of the four initial editions of Walt Whitman\'s Leaves of Grass. The choice of these remarkable moments serves to underline the engaged feature of Whitman´s poetical accomplishment, which implied not the mere transposition of European literary thought into the New World, but mainly the formal constitution of a national poetry fit for the social environment of the United States. In this sense, the analysis of these four Leaves of Grass´ editions (1855, 1856, 1861, 1867) presupposes two complementary ways: firstly the acknowledgment of Whitman´s poetry as a response to the social tensions in North American midnineteenth century, when modernity, led by free labor and industrialization, collides with colonial and pre-modern social structures, based upon slavery and the very descentralized commercial Republic constitution; secondly the literary configuration of these tensions, in which we observe elements of the literary Romanticism dialetically linked to local forms of expression, some of them alien to the literary achievements of the Old World, but reinforced by the founding project of a national literature. To attend these questions, this dissertation recovers the long tradition of Walt Whitman studies - dedicated in the present time to the historical revisioning of the poet´s works centered almost exclusively in the North American social experience - by the light of the Brazilian critical tradition, in which very important concepts and debates over the periferical position of New World literatures were consolidated. This theoretical perpective allows us not only to place Leaves of Grass in a wider perspective of New World literatures but also to build a indirect comparative view that rests upon some important questions to the North American and Brazilian literary traditions, as the engaged ethos of their literary elites; the search for new literary forms; the lyrical affirmative representation of national individuals; the economical and ethical responses to slavery; and the ambiguous and contradictory relation with European literary movements.

Lasten luova kirjoittaminen psyykkisen tulpan avaajana:tapaustutkimus pohjoissuomalaisen sairaalakoulun ja Päätalo-instituutin 8–13-vuotiaiden lasten kirjoituksista

Suvilehto, P. (Pirjo) 26 August 2008 (has links)
Abstract The empirical material for studying children's creative writing was collected in Taivalkoski, Lapland (a basic education course at Päätalo Institute, ten girls), and Oulu, Northern Finland (a creative writing project in a hospital school, two girls and two boys), in spring 2000. I was the instructor at the courses as well as the researcher. The children were 8–13 years in age. The subject of my study consists of the stories written by the children: what sort of stories they write and how creative writing suits hospital and school environments. I also look into bibliotherapy conducted among children and young people. In my study I describe, analyse and interpret by means of qualitative research the courses in creative writing offered by Päätalo Institute and the hospital school. As case studies, these two are stand-alone studies independent of each other. By qualitative approach in this work I mean that I describe how I build my interpretation as a researcher. The stories written by children provide material externalised from the subconscious as stories and writings which it is possible to interpret from a depth-psychological point of view. Sigmund Freud's understanding of dreams as manifestations of subconscious fears and hopes acquires a new form in the horror stories children write. The child works his or her activated energy charge through manipulating the dream-like and violent elements in stories in a controlled manner: by writing. In bibliotherapy, one studies one's own feelings, thoughts and memories and compares them to the experiences of others. This sort of work on feelings, thoughts and memories seemed to take place especially in the writer projects of the hospital school children: they worked on emotional processes while writing. On the basis of my study, creative writing and bibliotherapy offer a child or a young person a means for working out, at both conscious and subconscious levels, matters relating to the present stage of his or her development and current life condition. While writing, the child deals with his or her relations to friends, parents and the self. He or she treats hobbies and other topics of interest but problems as well. Studies already provide information as to the positive effects of bibliotherapy – reading and writing both have therapeutic effects – but more in-depth research is required. My dissertation shows that groups using bibliotherapy can function in the field of paediatric and adolescent psychiatry in homes for children and adolescents. They can also function in the environment of youth clubs and schools with bibliotherapy as a creative literary art activity to deter problems and foster growth and development. The method I developed, the Fantasy Treasure Chest (Fantasian aarrearkku), is one that can be taken in more general use for both instructing creative writing and collecting research material. / Tiivistelmä Lasten luovan kirjoittamisen tutkimuksen empiirinen aineisto kerättiin keväällä 2000 Taivalkoskella (Päätalo-instituutin sanataiteen perusopetuksen jakso, 10 tyttöä) ja Oulussa (sairaalakoulun luovan kirjoittamisen projekti, 2 tyttöä, 2 poikaa). Toimin itse sekä tutkijana että kurssien ohjaajana. Lapset olivat 8–13-vuotiaita.

[en] BODY IN RUINS: WRITING AMONG ARCHIVES AND THE TESTIMONY OF LITERATURE / [pt] CORPO EM RUÍNAS: A ESCRITA ENTRE ARQUIVOS E O TESTEMUNHO DA LITERATURA

GUSTAVO MOURA BRAGANÇA 22 May 2017 (has links)
[en] Body in ruins: writing among archives and the testimony of literature. The thesis investigates the unstable place of twentieth-century literature through reflections on literature archives or through writings that explore archives, as well as documents, testimonies and other vestiges of time taken as devices for textual compositions, with the purpose of outlining and discussing the presence and the rise of the archive in the literature of the last century, proposing, finally, that such presence will be constituted precisely through a literary environment established in the mid-nineteenth century and deepened in the course of the twentieth century, toward ours, such an environment in which one may point out, before the failure of stationary models of modern literature, the intrinsic necessity of searching, through literary writing, a other place for literature, through the gesture and the effort of writing, following, for such purpose, three concepts, myth, melancholy and impropriety, and a fourth one, utopia, seen from the perspective of non-place. For these objectives, the research goes through, by different approaches, the archive collections and literary works of Fernando Pessoa, W.G. Sebald and Pedro Nava, and works of Valêncio Xavier, among other writers. As complementary topics, the thesis finds philology and textual criticism, memory and memorialism, testimony writing and the literature of trauma, the crisis of representation and a deviation of realism towards an affective index.

Duas representações de família : "Os Glass", de J. D. Salinger, e "Os Tenenbaum", de Wes Anderson & Owen Wilson

Rollo, André Corrêa January 2006 (has links)
The present work analyses the theme of maladjusted families in the American fictional system. The corpora consists of the short stories about the Glass family, by J. D. Salinger, and the screenplay for The Royal Tenenbaums, written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. The comparative approach here developed is twofold: on the one hand, a thematic dialogue between the different authors' works, on the other hand, a research about the ways in which Salinger's stories and the film dialogue with another arts. Thus, the critical reading searches the intertextual and interartistic strategies present in the corpora. The thematic analysis is developed from a definition of a concept of maladjustment. Maladjustment can be seen as an individual's inadequacy or reaction to the group or community to which he/she belongs, to the thoughts, to the values and ways of behaviour. Both Glass and Tenenbaums are siblings which, when children, were outstandingly brilliant in activities mainly fullfilled by adults. Coming of age they become problematical with difficulties in personal relationship. To summarize the comparative reading we highlight three elements in common to both corpora: the individual's conflict with the world; the difficult of the personal communication (besides the strategies of fictional communication) and the difficulty in deal with instability. Finally, I examine how such problems are overcome by the characters. Besides this, I also try to describe how such works are inserted in the American fictional tradition of producing works whose main theme is the problematic family relationship.

Die vrou as outobiograaf: die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks

Nortje, Sandra 30 June 2007 (has links)
This dissertation is a report on a study about autobiography as genre, focusing on the voice of the white, Afrikaans-speaking woman. The point of departure for this study was a survey of the number of autobiographies written in Afrikaans by these women. With the focus on the limited number of such autobiographies three autobiographies were studied, namely, Met die Boere in die veld (Sarah Raal), My beskeie deel (M.E.R.) and 'n Wonderlike geweld (Elsa Joubert). Within the framework of the complexity systems theory the role of the observer (author/reader) was studied to determine the possibility of demonstrating that when reading/writing an autobiography, some epistemological changes may occur, manifesting as conceptual changes in the mind of the observer. It could be demonstrated that because of women's sensitivity to interpersonal relationships they are capable of acting as unique registers of the complexity of individual existence, while remaining aware of the constant influence, effect and needs of the other. / AFRIKAANS & THEORY OF LIT / MA (AFRIKAANS)

Vaniš, Leo January 2021 (has links)
1 Leo Vaniš: Abstrakt dizertace (EN): The dissertation theses "ART EDUCATION - LITERARY EDUCATION: The subjects of" higher "culture in aesthetic education on the example of geometric art" is based primarily on the field of educational sciences, focusing on two areas of the educational process: art and literary education. Two equivalent school subjects matters (which the very graphic concept of the name by capital letters suggests, as well as the intentional duplication of the word education) is based on the study of culture, which is conceived on two levels - "higher" and "lower," possibly simple, unprofessional, but not necessarily of lower quality. The intentional introduction of the word "higher" in quotation marks already in itself suggests that it will be a problem of defining what such a culture means, what it can look like and how it can be understood in an educational context. collection of so-called canonically anchored works, in the field of verbal and artistic creation, while cross-sectionally focusing on one researched aspect - geometry. Whith the concept of dual geometry (often referred to in the theses as the "phenomenon of simple and artistic geometrization") the author tries to show the projection of already established great artistic values into contemporary educational reality, defining...
